I would advise people to look for other lawyers, I used this office and spent around 5k for a result that a public defender could have gotten. Not worth the time or the money. Very dissatisfied.

I am not a satisfied customer of this law firm...with the amount of experience that is stated on their web page on federal conspiracy charges is mind boggling to me when I call and ask about a charge that was said to be a typo on there end several times...$25,000 and typos is very common is what it seems to be, sounds like a conspiracy by professionals...

Chris was the guy we needed him to be. He was realistic and direct, he respected our time and our finances. He talked us down when we needed it, if you’ve been through family court, you know what I’m talking about. He was easy to get ahold of and Sarah on his team was a superstar. We had to trust him with our lives, basically, and we are glad we chose him. Family court is a mess to deal with and he took so much of the stress out of it. He gave us options on how to proceed at every turn, he would even give us options like; you can do xyz yourself and save money or you can have my team do it if you don’t want to deal with it. He was able to help us get a better outcome than most get in our situation. Hopefully we never need his services again, but if we do, we know he’ll be there for us.

Clarissa and Bronwyn were wonderful to work with. They took my case seriously and listened to everything I shared with them. They made it easy to complete and were able to make everything fair and balanced. I appreciate them both so much and recommend Hope Law Firm to anyone in the Des Moines area needing legal representation.

I came to hope law firm during a difficult time in my life, for guidance on getting guardianship of a disabled family member who was struggling on their own. Scott Lyon, and Bronwyn, worked with me and helped me obtain temporary guardianship, which allowed me to seek medical care for my family member at the end of their life. I will forever be thankful I was able to help this family member. As for Scott and Bronwyn, they were very communicative, took time to answer any questions or concerns I had, fairly priced, and trustworthy representation, they also understood the situation as an emergency and squeezed us in for a same day consult. If you are looking for this type of attorney, I couldn't recommend this team more.

I have been using Learned & Associates for several years for tax and legal advice and have had exceptional service from them. They have provided first rate legal advice to me and my family when I established my own business and when I sold my house and other family members houses. Because of their top notch work, they continue to prepare my taxes every year even after I moved out of state. I have referred several people to them and they have been extremely satisfied as well.

I was referred by Nick to learned law and Chad referred us to Heartland Credit restoration and told us to reach out when our credit score was better. Finally after getting everything resolved. I called and I left a message with their receptionist if Chad would be able to call us back to see if he has an appointment available to come in and speak to him about what all he needs from us to get a home loan. Never heard back. The receptionist was very rude when i was speaking with her. When i have not heard back from Chad for a week i went ahead and emailed him. Its been over a month and half since i have not heard back. At least a phone call or a response to my email would have been appreciated. Definitely was disappointed because Chad was very helpful in the beginning with all of the information.

I spoke with Gotsdiner today, a managing partner of this law firm, and he is EXTREMELY rude, arrogant, and ornery! His demeanor reeks of a superiority complex. I needed assistance on a legal matter through my pre-paid legal services. He got on the phone without even a salutation! He immediately says, they could not find a referral attorney for my legal matter. He told me to go to the Iowa Bar Association and find an attorney on my own. Imagine a law office with lawyers allegedly with all areas of practice saying they can’t provide you with an attorney who practices what would presumably fall under real estate law. He continued to aggressively overstate that they can’t find an attorney or make an attorney take my case, and he’s not going to answer a bunch of questions on my legal matter. He unnecessarily stressed that I needed to find an attorney who could take my case and stated that rather than hang up on me, I needed to find one on my own. I was appalled at the way I was being spoken to unprovoked. While he went on this rant, I was mostly silent because I was so taken aback that my mouth was agape and just totally aghast. He also told me they do not have to provide me with a referral attorney. The whole purpose of having pre-paid legal services is to be able to get legal advice on legal matters when and if they arise. If they cannot provide you with legal representation, they can refer you to an attorney who can. Imagine a managing partner arrogantly and rudely telling you that he will not provide you with any of the things that are specifically mentioned in what they are supposed to provide. I am appalled and disgusted by the way this man spoke to me today. I will certainly be canceling my pre-paid membership and implore anyone considering pre-paid legal services or Gotsdiner in the state of Iowa to reconsider another option. Such as the bar association, as I was so rudely referred to.

I did the dance with a credit consolidation company until they ran into resistance from one of my credit card companies. They offered no help and the account was pursued by a very abusive law firm out of state. I turned to Ray and Johnson Law firm and have been very pleasantly surprised at the personal service, communication and professionalism. So far it's been a great move. Thanks Ray and Heather!! Effort they will work with you. But once filed in court only way to request payment options is file a MOTION with the courts requesting what it is your wanting .. the courts are fair .. but again can't stress enough to RESPOND RESPOND RESPOND .. this shows good faith effort ..AND YOU DONT NEED AN ATTORNEY TO DO THAT ...

Gene was hired after my appeals order to address post-decree open topics (taxes and equity distributions) and was my attorney for ~6 months. I was passed off from the law firm to Gene without much say as my Appellate attorney wanted to focus on other clients. Up until that point, I had spent +$50kwith the Shindler, Anderson, Goplerud & Weese, P.C. law firm. Gene represented me at a contempt hearing as my ex would not provided the documentation for me to amend taxes. My ex provided the necessary 8332 tax forms to enable me to amend prior year taxes one day before the scheduled hearing, after dodging being served a month prior. My ex claimed that our 19 yr old daughter was eligible as a dependent, so I questioned her student dependent eligibility with Gene prior to the hearing. Technically, I was provided two dependents as required, but questioned dependent status. Gene was not supportive prior to the hearing, as he asked if I wanted to cancel the contempt. I asked to pursue the hearing as I questioned the student dependency of the 19 yr old, then he visually rolled his eyes at me as he did not like this decision. He did not fight for me well during the hearing and let opposing counsel claim my daughter was eligible when in fact she was not. I asked after the hearing for follow up on proof of 19 yr old evidence of student registration. Ironically, my ex later withdrew my 19 yr old and gave me our 14 yr old dependent instead. I asked what the consequences were for them misleading the court, told him that I since had what I needed to amend taxes (he was bcc'd on email), but he proceeded to assume incorrectly and email opposing counsel without proper understanding. Gene was bcc'd on all of these emails to my ex, thus giving me the impression that he did not review the emails, nor focus on my case. He then withdrew from my case and stated I misled him, then twisting it into a different reason, telling me that he was not going to get into the ongoing conflicts. I spent $4.5k on getting these two forms from my ex, yet open issues remain unresolved today. My experience with Gene was very unprofessional, he neglected my case, and furthermore felt the law firm did not uphold their responsibilities to protect me either. If this is the attorney you want, go for it, but I felt very unsupported and felt as if my case was neglected, just a money suck. I do not recommend.

Tim has been my families attorney since 1990. He handled my divorce and my sisters. Both of us got almost everything we asked for and more. He was able to prove wrongful misconduct, abuse, and neglect. Then years down the road when son was injured then again when he got in trouble, he was able to represent him and did it very well. I have used Tim for my attorney at least 5-6 times since 1990, and I have never been let down.

I was a client of Duffy's. I received horrible advice, he did not write up anything on my behalf my wife's attorney had to draft all documents. I was unable to see my children for 12 weeks. My wife's attorney assured her he was lazy would do the absolute minimum and unfortunately he was correct. Duffy also refused to listen, and rudely interrupted every time I tried to explain anything, he was very unprofessional and he absolutely had no empathy and showed zero care for my situation, the only concern he had was for his unearned bill.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
