My husband and I had had individual estate planning documents (Wills, Powers of Attorney, Advanced Medical Directives) drawn up during a period when we lived out-of-state. When returning to CT, it was high on our priority list to identify an attorney with the right expertise to assess the adequacy of what was in place and develop whatever changes/additions necessary to conform with CT statues and be as prepared as possible for Probate.
For us, not only were we seeking an individual with extensive experience, but we also felt the need for a personal connection; an attorney who could inform, explain and make recommendations in "laymen's terms" and give us the confidence that everything that we needed for our particular circumstances would be prepared promptly and for a reasonable fee. Staff personality was also important.
Not to be cliche, but Gerald Shea and his team "checked all the boxes." Two weeks from the time of our initial (free) consultation, we had fully executed, complete documents in our hands. During this process, we learned that our prior Wills were deficient, lacking the details that would have distributed our estate to the appropriate heirs according to our wishes as a blended family.
What peace of mind this has brought! We also know that Gerry is there for us for any future questions we may have and/or if there are legal changes that require updating.

I tripped and fell and hurt myself on an uneven driveway. I hurt my knee, wrist, nose and had abrasions on my face. I was bleeding heavily. I tried to contact the building’s owner’s insurance to make a claim but got nowhere. I was referred to Attorney Kevin Hoffkins by another attorney. Jeffrey Bagnell was my attorney in a lawsuit against Sig Sauer gun manufacturer. I first met Jeff while I was still in an almost month-long hospital stay following my injury and he had driven 8+ hours to meet me and my family face to face. Not many people could comprehend the struggle I have endured due to my injury, or fathom how life-changing a huge, public trial can be. However, Jeff was always there for me and has since evolved from attorney to close friend.
Jeff was by my side every single step of the way through a trial with terrifying odds. Just him and I, standing tall, against 14 attorneys with bottomless pockets, working for a company with billions of dollars at their disposal. Whether it was by phone, text, email, court filings, or sitting in a courtroom, Jeff never left me feeling alone in this fight. I know I would not have been able to make it through this horrific ordeal if it wasn’t for him continued support and guidance.
He is one of the most intelligent, hardworking, dedicated people I know. He went to great lengths and numerous sleepless nights to make sure he covered every aspect of my case. Although Sig Sauer’s law team tried, he never let them fluster him or outsmart him in the slightest. He always came back swinging with very quick, articulate, and effective responses to their attempts at overwhelming him with filings and paperwork. He never missed a deadline and was swift and powerful in his responses.
I don’t think there is enough I could say about Jeff and his abilities as a lawyer. He is everything you could possibly hope for when looking for someone to be on your side.

Although my child's case is not related to special ed, Mr. Berliner followed up with my urgent voicemail and called me after 8 pm, once he got a chance to respond. People get very stressful and emotional especially when they are not treated fairly and tend to carry away from the main course. I think Mr. Berliner knows this very well and stays sharp to the point. He spent about an hour or a bit more to listen to our situation, asked additional questions to clarify a few moments and tried to keep the conversation in a right direction. Unfortunately, I was out of time to make proper decisions for the next day, however, Mr. Berliner still suggested several options that were very helpful. I highly recommend Mr. Berliner to parents who are having problems with their schools.

We engaged Attorney Berliner after unsuccessfully trying to get our local school district to realize that our daughter’s educational needs were not being met. After literally years of trying to wade through PPT meetings and negotiating IEP’s we finally challenged our school district to consider an “out of district placement” so that she could finally get the specialized education she needed. Nothing that we said, no evidence that we provided could convince the school district that they were failing her.
From the outset, Attorney Berliner was personable, professional and very straightforward in explaining the various options we had. Once we engaged his services, he attended a PPT meeting with us and represented our position in a very clear way. When the school district continued to hold to their position, Attorney Berliner helped us through what ultimately because a legal battle that we could never have fought – or won – on our own.
I am very pleased to say that our daughter did receive the out-of-district placement that she needed. She has now moved through the high school system, and is a better adjusted, more motivated and forward looking young adult than she was, or would have been if she had stayed where she was.

He not only demonstrated skill and professionalism while handling my case but showed extraordinary compassion during very difficult and stressful times.
I worked with him on my situation and I appreciated his honesty and straightforwardness and after assessing the situation presented all the options so that I could make the best, intelligent and well informed decision. He was able to negotiate a better deal for me than the one my company initially offered.

In September, 2016, I contacted Atty. Pate regarding an incident I considered to be age discrimination in my workplace. In a no charge consultation, he advised me to contact my human resources department regarding the incident. I did so. My company investigated the incident, and it seemed to have been resolved. Six months later, my company took what I believed to be retaliatory action for my initial complaint. I resigned from my employment under duress two months later. I again contacted Atty. Pate who believed I had a discrimination and retaliation case against my employer. He advised me every step of the way while negotiating with the employer. Atty. Pate was helpful when I tried to collect unemployment and the employer appealed twice. My unemployment claim was successful. When the employer would not agree to a settlement, Atty. Pate filed a complaint with the EEOC, and ultimately a suit against the employer. Nine months after my second contact with Atty. Pate, the case was settled to my satisfaction. Atty. Pate kept me informed through the entire process. He was patient and empathetic and worked hard on my behalf against a very difficult employer. I am grateful for his efforts and guidance.

Brian is an exceptionally bright, insightful, caring and truly decent young attorney. I initially had hired another highly respected lawyer in his firm to handle my case. Even the simplest transaction can become difficult or complicated (or both, as ours did) and if that happens, you will want the best legal advice and representation available.
