Jim is an outstanding attorney who exceeded my expectations and got me the best outcome possible. I consulted multiple attorneys prior to finding Jim; no one came close to his level of professionalism and experience. Jim was an invaluable resource during a very difficult time and he truly has his clients' best interests in mind. I cannot recommend Jim more highly.

Had to find new law firm because this one lied to us and here is the last email I sent to their office after finally getting my documents back along with half retainer due to the non refundable clause in the contact. Even though they breached the contract with dishonesty and poor standard of care. Placing my grievance with the state for our wasted time and funds. email from me to office manager: Is it a breach of contract to lie to your client or just a breach of ethics? We have honored our side of the contract with the expectation to get honest representation and a standard of care. Now we have a huge waste of time and money because of the professional performance of your firm. I will attach the email communication that proves that we have been told two different statements. First being an email labeled (receipts), In which I provided Mrs. Frey with the receipts she requested. In her response, "I have reviewed the discovery served upon you and have made my objections; I'll scan over to you once I return to the office. Along with it, I'll send you a tip sheet to make the process less daunting".. Document was never sent. A week later, I asked through email for an update on our CS case since I have heard nothing since the last email stating that she would scan and send documents. Her reply was "how's it going with the discovery?". Which is ridiculous to ask seeing as she had the discovery and never sent it back with the corrected questionnaire. I responded, informing her that she has the discovery and was reviewing it last week. Her response was " just double checked, looks pretty straight forward!"..... This is completely opposite of what was said the week before. Both cannot be true and can only conclude that one statement is a lie. This is a complete abandonment of trust along with the lackadaisical update on our case, especially when I am asking on a Friday evening whether we are showing up for court Monday morning because I have gotten no word from my paid attorney. I believe this is gross negligence of standard of care from your firm. I will leave a detailed review of my experience with your firm and place my grievance with the state. This is a very important matter to my family and I. I hope that other cases you have, that you treat them with more respect and care than we have received.

Mr. Cole represented me in a very difficult case and ultimately won. He was always professional and would return my calls as soon as he was free, or have his secretary return my calls with an answer to my question if he was going to be tied up for the entire day. He was kind, understanding, took note of things I mentioned about my situation and despite being very busy, I was always treated with respect. Mr. Cole almost always took the time to talk to me personally, it was rare that his secretary would return my call instead of doing it himself. I have the highest respect for Mr. Cole and would not hesitate to recommend him to others.

Noel Fox is a very detailed & knowledgable attorney. She obtained an extremely favorable outcome in my matter and was responsive, answering all my questions and concerns. Ms. Fox is exceptionally responsive. I doubt the previous reviewer actually engaged Ms. Fox for her services since they refer to her as Charlotte. She does not use her first name but instead goes by Noel. Ms. Fox was not the first attorney involved in my matter but she was the first attorney to explain clearly to me the emotional and financial costs associated with litigation. All of my phone calls were returned within 24 hours. I was in great hands with Ms. Fox. She provided excellent legal advice at a fair price. She brought my matter to resolution for less expense than the previous attorney that represented me and well in advance of the projected time frame the previous attorney had promised. I always knew where my case stood and what the next step was for me. I was also well informed in advance of the costs of moving forward.

Charlotte did a poor job communicating and handling of my case. She charges at least double of what her work is worth. She does a 50% job. She took two months to file paperwork with the courts even when given direct instruction to proceed immediately. Then when she sends you a letter she expects you to respond the same day! When you pay her thousands of dollars up front, you would expect her to work diligently on your behalf. When you make a 2 minute phone call to her she bills you for an entire hour. If all you need is a strongly worded letter then she will meet your needs. If you need someone to back up the talk, look elsewhere. Out of the few lawyers I've worked with, she is by far the worst. It says she has been licensed to practice in NC for 9 years. the lack of reviews should have been a warning sign

My Step daughter petitioned for guardianship for my spouse in a thinly veiled money and property grab against her father and me. She won against me even though I am the legal spouse. She kidnapped him into her care and won't let me near him even blocking my phone calls to him. Aaron did a very poor job with this case and I lost. He did little to no preparation and did not properly present my case . He did not obtain key elements i.e. medical records which would have proven our case. He also failed to pick apart the Medical documentation that the petitioner used to gain guardianship. She actually conducted the medical herself and had a doctor who was her former employer sign off on the incompetency. The medical that was presented was done virtually and she clearly lied on the form. The Petitioner even went so far as to admit in court that she was searching for her fathers property and admitted the doctor who did diagnoses was not my husbands regular doctor. The petitioner also failed to notify all next of kin. Aaron seems to be a nice fellow but if you need a litigator keep looking.

Charles was always easily reachable and responsive. We have been working with Charles for over 2 years. We would highly recommend Charles for any and all HOA issues, he is by far the most knowledgeable HOA lawyer in the area.

Not sure of this person as an attorney, but she has no problem slamming others on social media about politics. For someone who claims to be a family attorney, who doesn't even know me, she ridiculed my marriage by saying my husband must have cheated since we share a FB account. Who would want to hire someone like that? She also ridiculed a typo....all out of hate and ignorance. For someone who provides a service, she is not doing herself any favors by acting like this on a social media platform. I wouldn't allow her to represent me pro bono, let alone pay her.

I hired Ashley Michaels to represent me during my separation, it involved a prenup and children. A retainer was paid for my legal fees in the amount of 5000.00 and put into an ILOTA for my legal fees and my use. I told her that I no longer needed her services and I wanted to formally end my separation to my wife. She refused to write up my request. Accusing me of doing things under duress. I wanted to have my attorney write this up because it was what I wanted and I wanted to make sure no one could say my request was done for any other reason then because it was what I wanted. Just because it was not what she thought was best LEGALLY does not mean that it was not the right thing to do for my family. I stated that I wanted a refund of my remaining retainer and I was ending our business together. She then stated that they would cut the check and mail it to a THIRD PARTY and refused to give me my retainer so that I could hire a different attorney to assist in ending my separation with my wife. Her representation of me was terrible. She caused more issues than she resolved. She was unable to make any headway with my wife who was Pro Se. Meaning she had NO attorney. The fact that her office originally lied and stated they had sent the check and then told me that they had not and would send my retainer to someone else and refused to cut me a check for the remaining balance has to be illegal in some way. I have filed formal complaints with NC STATE Bar. I would not do business with her and I question the partners only because they hired her to work in their firm. She has more loyalty to a non client than her actual clients. She is more interested in the money and draining a retainer because once you no longer need her legal services and she cannot bill you she is unhelpful and dishonest.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
