I suggest avoiding Charles Billman at all costs. He will take as much money from you and your family as he possibly can (even as a court appointed attorney) and will do as little as he can get away with. He is a horrible lawyer. He gave my partner horrible legal advice, little to no effort/ representation, missed court dates, and this all resulted in my partner going to prison. In my opinion he purposely gave poor legal advice so my partner would be sentenced to prison and Charles Billman would no longer have to work for us (he could turn his attention to scamming other vulnerable people for thousands of dollars and nothing in return.) I personally witnessed and experienced Charles Billman's poor performance in court and his rude attitude towards us for quite some time. He was biased and did not believe in or fight for the innocence of my partner. He is a criminal defense lawyer and acts more like a prosecutor. He put no effort in whatsoever. And was way too friendly towards prosecutors (possible collusion and corruption going on.) He literally did nothing but occasionally show up. He did nothing to defend my partner. He should be ashamed of himself. He is greedy, manipulative, rude, incompetent, a liar, and careless. This law firm should be embarrassed and ashamed for employing him. His legal assistant 'Whitney' is also shockingly rude and offensive. One of the rudest people I've ever met. This law firm, Charles Billman, and his whole team should be investigated for poor performance, bribery, bias, corruption, collusion, incompetence, and fraudulent activities. Shame on you Charles Billman and Harrison & Johnston. My partner and I will never forget how awfully you treated us and failed us and our children. We will never stop fighting for our justice, one way or another.

Matt Bass has represented me on several occasions and not only is he incredibly communicative. His professionalism is unmatched and makes his clientele feel comfortable trusting legal processes. There’s really no one better than Matt and his legal partners. Also he’s a rockstar in the courthouse - highly recommend!

Polite, courteous, welcoming and top notch professional. Mr. Mayfield was able to answer all of our questions, as well as, put us at ease in regard to future legal proceedings. It was Important to us to find counsel who wasn’t condescending and dismissive. Mr. Mayfield was nothing of the sort. On top of it all he encouraged us to call if we had any questions or needed help at any point during our legal matter.

Not a great experience trying to get an update to our currently existing end-of-life documents. Just wanted to make a few changes, made a phone call to him, and and as per his request, sent him all our existing documents along with a letter completely spelling out what we wanted to do. The problems began during our two week later phone consult, when Mr. Vondy acted as if we had no idea what a Will was, and actually said “let me educate you on what a Will can and cannot do.” Interrupted him to confirm we already know all this and just wanted updates and asked if he had read everything we sent him. He acknowledged receiving our documents, but then asked how we spelled our last name…what? Instantly obvious he had not looked at anything we sent as our name is at the top of every single page. Ended our conversation, told him we would look for an attorney elsewhere. Would I go there again…no. We want an attorney who works with you to accomplish your goals, not an attorney who has their own agenda. Would I recommend…no. Not unless you have never had anything done, and can afford to spend lots of time being educated on everything he might prepare for you.

If it were possible to give zero stars, this would be a zero. My daughter hired Ms. Devon Humphreys of this firm to handle a custody issue. During the course of her representation, she gave late and erroneous advice that resulted in serious, negative results in my daughter's case in addition to costing a ridiculous amount of money. On the day of trial, Ms. Humphries withdrew because we wanted an explanation for a late change in advice that she had no explanation for and chose to withdraw instead. After the withdrawal, several attorneys suggested that the conduct in this case could be considered malpractice. Ms. Humphries advised my daughter to compromise her claim for terms that were far less favorable than those eventually achieved by new counsel. Save yourself the time and money and look elsewhere.

Mr. McGuire was my divorce attorney. He and his office were overall very personable and respectful. My divorce was contentious, as most are, and James handled each frustrating exchange with a calm that carried over- resulting in me feeling relaxed and confident about the end game. You will spend a good deal of $$ here, that being said, he and his office have a great reputation for good reason. He is patient, knowledgeable, responsive, has incredible listening skills, hardworking and advocated for me and my children. Areas to improve on are perhaps… stocking a bourbon bar for those not so great moments of break-down or there paying his bill or even a celebratory “cheers to getting your life back lady”. Seriously—these situations have no winner, it’s a zero sum game. However, I highly recommend. I enjoyed James’s personality and humor & his assistant, Tanya is an absolute delight to work with. I hope I never need him again as my pockets are quite thinned, but I am pleased with the outcome-smiling while typing this.

Georgia is absolutely one of the best lawyers I’ve ever worked with. When you’re truly doing right & need help she is your person. She truly fights for what’s right & advises you in the right direction. She’s been available at anytime for me during my case. It really helps when your lawyer takes the time that she does with a case. She will be my go to for anything needed in the future. Cannot recommend enough.

This attorney was recommended by another attorney to contact for information regarding divorce. I was not able to speak with Ms. Ashby; however, I was consulted by her partner. This attorney answered my questions but informed me it would be a long process and by the time we finished I would owe her $200,000.00 - 400,00.00 US dollars what a crock!!! Then she sent me a bill for our 6 minute conversation over the telephone for $ 400.00. Which they stated she charged $400.00 an hour. How does 6 minutes constitute one hour. STAY CLEAR OF THIS LAW FIRM THEIR OUT FOR YOUR MONEY NOT TO HELP YOU!!

I had a situation years ago that a previous employer caused me a lot of harm and distress. I interviewed several lawyers locally and Phillip Griffin stood out heads and shoulders above anyone else. Together we built a rock solid case, so solid that the defendants changed counsel 3x's and they approached us during pretrial asking what we had to do to settle the case. It was not until the week before we were scheduled to go to trial when we shared the recorded conversations that allowed us to we reach a settlement a day before trial that we were most happy with. To close, I cannot recommend Mr. Griffin enough, so much so that 8 years later after the settlement, the defendants called me back for an interview but unfortunately, we could not come to an agreement on the position was presented. I am forever grateful that I interviewed 3 lawyers and Phillip was the last one and has been my only lawyer I have ever had to date!

Warning :: Incompetent lawyer :: Warning Was hired to defend against a contract disagreement, and Phil's incompetence cost me the entire case. He argued points that made zero sense, and was made fun of by the judge, the other lawyer, in court, and in the written motions themselves. Was often the cause of laughter in the courtroom, which is very embarrassing. He continues to bill me, and now adds on interest. I am having to hire a new lawyer just to get Phil off my back. And I lost the entire case by leaps and bounds.

Howard is a great attorney and deserves more credit , he is very easy to talk to and understanding, he doesn't like a lier when your guilty , and if u have proof of your not guilty plea even when u may be guilty he is happy to present it to the best of his knowledge. And he is close with the D.A and can get you good deals . But if u don't know what your wanting or talking about of course any lawyer can take advantage of a rookie. Anyhow I think very highly of Howard and he has been a great attorney for me since I was 10 and in foster care . Even as a adult.

Mr. Manheimer was a pleasure to work with. While being a little difficult to get a hold of at times, was genuinely apologetic, and always did get in contact with me in advance of court proceedings to discuss my case and calm my nerves. Felt very comfortable speaking with him, and that he was actually listening to me. He kept my career and ramifications of any pleas in mind when handling my matter to reach the most positive outcome. The first public defender I was assigned, I felt as if I was just another nameless, faceless, file in her stack for the day. She barely made eye contact and did not care about my side of the situation. I highly recommend Mr. Manheimer. He is a strong advocate for his clients and makes your voice feel heard.

He was all about getting paid! Every meeting was about how much money I had for him. Once he was paid I did hear anything from him about my case! When it started getting closer to my trial I kept trying to meet with him. We set many different times and dates and would cancel the day be for. Sometimes it was even an hour be for the appointment. Final we meet a couples of days be for my trial and was pressing my to take a deal. I didnt want a deal because I knew there was evidence to prove I didn't do what I was being charged with. Comes to find out at my trial he wasn't even ready for it he gathered nothing for it. So because we had no defense I was found guilt and now facing 10 years!! $7000.00 out the window. I'm Appealing It. I talked to a new attorney and he was in such disbelief and couldn't believe that that happened. In one hour this other attorney talk to me more about my case then in the whole year and a half I had Howard. On the bright side I was told I should have no problem having an appeal granted. A court appointed attorney!!!

Aggressive, manilpulative, dishonest and openly lies in court. Ms. Smalls is the dirtiest, hostile lawyer in Frederick County, Virginia. Ms. Smalls coaches her clients and witnesses to lie, uses the fact she is a woman to take advantage, knowing that male judges and lawyers won't object to her vile tactics for fear of being called, " misogynists." Key start slinging mud even before the court hearing, purposely prejudicing the judges. A dirty lawyer who cares about the money and winning, and not the law and justice. Highly ego based. Her style is to sling as much mud, false facts, accusations and lies as possible.

Mrs. Smalls was awesome my entire case! I've been a consistent client of hers on and off for different issues. She's honest and ethical. She is also a lot less expensive then most attorneys in this area. I read the other review and I'm just curious why an opposing party would be commenting on Mrs.Smalls? One: your probably upset because she beat you in court and two: A client (not a opposing party) is best to comment on Mrs. Smalls and the grade of services she rendered.

Ms. Smalls represented my ex and it was honestly hard to watch how incompetent she was. She was all about running up the bill for herself and not for advising what was best for her client or what was even legal. She filed an emergency order on a Friday afternoon after she found out my attorney was out of the country. Luckily he got back on Sunday and saw that she was asking for a change of custody at 9am that Monday morning. My ex and Ms. Smalls were both reprimanded in court by the judge when my attorney produced documents that showed my ex willfully lied about the issue. Who knows if Ms. Small knew he was lying beforehand but a good attorney should make that determination before proceeding. She is super shady but not in anyway that would benefit anyone but herself.

I was discriminated against at my place of employment. I already completed an investigation with the EEOC. which resulted in a mediation. I called attorney Klenkar because I was told he is an employment lawyer. I wanted to pay for 30 minutes or a hour of advice he could give me on what questions i should ask of my employer during this mediation session. …… his assistant called me back and stated he would not be able to help me and did not have anyone he would recommend. They would not give me a reason why. I asked why, all I was given he would not help me. He didn’t even speak with me. For all I know his assistant could have mis heard me or written down the wrong info. About why was seeking advice. He seemed pretty cold.

While the attorney's office returned my call promptly, the receptionist's behavior left me feeling disappointed. It felt as though they were glad to deliver the news that they could not help me and could not provide any recommendations, and the overall experience was characterized by snarkiness, unhelpfulness, and a lack of empathy. Moving forward, I would suggest that the law firm takes steps to ensure that all clients are treated with the respect and professionalism they deserve.

His background leads you to believe that he would know his way around the criminal justice system. His representation and guidance was poor. My daughter was caught between 3 tractor trailers on hwy 81 and her speed while trying to pass one truck reached 94miles in a 65 mile zone. This was @ 10 a.m. There is no way we should have pleaded guilty to reckless driving, she will be explaining this instance for the rest of life. He acted as though he was in a big hurry. Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
