It's easy to believe that every closing attorney is the same. However, after working with larger closing firms that didn’t meet my expectations, it brings me great pleasure to write this review for Merino and Associates LLC. Every interaction with their team is exceptional. Every client I bring to them is treated with the utmost respect, as if they are the only closing that matters. Their personalized approach sets them apart. I’ve called many times after hours, and without fail, I receive a prompt callback. The entire team that I work with—Ellen, Lisa, Vinny, and Dave himself—ensures you have direct access to them. They understand that real estate transactions don’t operate on a 9-to-5 schedule, and when I’m reaching out after hours, it’s for a reason. They always listen, are patient, and focus on finding solutions. What I love most about working with Merrino and Associates? It’s hard to pick just one thing, but if I must: it’s the genuine care they bring to their work. It shows in every aspect of their service. If it wasn’t already clear—I am your raving fan!

Peter handled my will preparation perfectly, can't imagine a better overall experience! He walked me through every step of the process and answered my questions clearly so I could understand my options. All the paperwork processing went without a hitch. I had a couple of "non standard" requests for my will and Peter handled them without issue. Very professional and courteous too. I saw a couple negative reviews that made no sense at all to me based on my involvement with this law firm. I can unequivocally say that my experience was extremely pleasant and satisfactory on every level. Highly recommended!!

I've seen my fair share of useless lawyers over the years, who do little to no work and add zero value. But never have I seen such utter incompetence whereby the lawyer tells you "court is Feb 12" and then texts you January 4 asking "where are you, court starts in an hour"? If you can't handle simple administrative tasks AND cannot do simple law, you should not be a lawyer. You should also face the consequences of this.

I retained Ms. Brown for my custody case in Cherokee County. At first all seemed well, she presented herself as well educated in the law and eager to help me win my case. Unfortunately, that lasted about midway into my first hearing. She pleaded with me to "trust her like a maternal figure"and shorten my court ordered time because it would be a temporary change. Reluctantly, I agreed and the Judge ordered us to go to mediation and come back within 6 months. Well 10 months later, there's been no mediation scheduled, multiple unanswered calls/emails, blatant contempt actions from the Defendant and nothing has changed. I attempted to schedule numerous meetings with Ms. Brown and was told " I should just give up and do what my child's mother says". She then filed a motion to be dismissed from the case and told me to not contact her. Ms. Brown was misleading, unprofessional and displayed an enormous amount of indecorous behavior. I DO NOT recommend her at all to anyone fighting for rights to be involved in their child's life.

I have had her for over a year now in a very agonizing paternity case. Not only has Teri been very caring but she has worked her butt off in my case. She is great!!!! Only real son case is dragging is due to the judicial officer and her lack of knowledge and common sense. Teri is a fighter and does not back down!

I am quite familiar with BAD lawyers, had one who I hired to help with the closing of an Illinois Land Trust set up by my deceased mother. Later I had a Florida lawyer so bad that he was not only disbarred but ended up doing time in prison. So I am familiar with BAD lawyers. Around the time that the other reviewer was having problems with Mr. Lingerfelt I was looking for a realty lawyer. Had I seen her post I would never have gone to him, fortunately I either missed the review or it was not yet posted, as I did vet him as to his being a lawyer, where he went to school etc. Not finding any negative info I consulted him with questions of realty issues. He did not represent me then, I just used his service to more fully understand my realty issues. I later followed up with him in buying a home in Cherokee County. Mr. Lingerfelt is not only a lawyer specializing in closings but he is also a licensed realtor. He was very helpful and I made my purchase based in part on his advice. As he was out of the country on his honeymoon he did not actually attend the closing, although he did the paperwork. Instead his mother, also a realty professional, attended the closing and all went well. This month I used his service to have my Will attested to and he is nominated to handle my estate when the time comes. I am sufficiently competent to have done my own will but I still had him review it prior to signing. Over the last 18 months he has done a good job for my 3 little issues and I think you will do well for any realty issues you need taken in hand by him. Bill - Kennesaw and Canton, Ga.

I bought a house in February. I contacted Jason to help me close & finish the deal. We close the deal on February 2015. It is now April going on May and we have yet to hear anything from him regarding the title. He has NOT DONE ANY OF THE PAPERWORK in regards to filing a title. I called & emailed him numerous times to no avail. I called him one afternoon & his secretary said he was on a phone call. I walk into his office to see him walking around aimlessly. I ask him why he hasn't returned any of my phone calls or emails. He simply shrugs his shoulders, and says he didn't get an email. He had nothing to say but "he'll look for the paperwork". He couldn't give me a date of when anything was filed, or when & if there was a problem. He's a joke of a lawyer. I don't recommend him.

I was arrested in Cobb county on December 23rd and spent a total of 90 days incarcerated after writing Mr Forbes three letters, many text messages, had the circuit defender's office email him and talk to him one time in which he did not recall any of the conversation. I finally bailed out of jail which was my only option since he wouldn't visit me and I still have yet to speak to him. I then requested new representation which is now set me back even further so I would definitely not retain this attorney for any legal matter.

Two, yes two years ago I gave John Forbes $1400.00 to help with me getting visitation with my granddaughter in GA. At first he was attentive with phone calls only or text. Seven months latter, still no court date or phone calls I contact him and ask what can I do to expedite my case and I asked if he needed more money. I live in FL so he gave me his account number and I went down and deposited $500.00 more into his account. Since then I was told I had a court case, took time off from work, driving to Atlanta for my court date he text me and said that it was postponed and he would advise me when it was rescheduled. That call never happened, I told him this was ridiculous and I wanted my money back. Imagine my surprise when he refunded me $300.00, for what! I spoke with my family and they said to ask him to continue with the case due to him being familiar with the case and keeping the $1100.00 for whatever little thing he did. Then came covid.... He text me once to say he had covid and would get with me once he was over it. That was October 2020. I text him (he didn't answer his phone) on 11/23/2020 I text him that I was trying to be patient but was getting hard to do, no response. I text him again (still not answering phone)Feb 8, 2021 Asking if this was hi normal business practice, still no response. I text him again 3/15/2021 still no response. On March 17,2021 I text him one last time. At no point did I get any response from him, I even checked obituaries to make sure he did not succumb to covid and nope he did not. Still to this day 5/3/2021 I have yet to hear from him, I basically flushed 1900.00 down the drain for something as simple as getting to see my granddaughter who lives with her other grandparents. Since then I have on my own addressed the other grandparents, we pick my granddaughter up and go off for a few hours with no help from John Forbes. He talks a good game but a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
