Nick seemed to be overwhelmed with other matters, missing the deadline for discovery, waiting for over 2 months to give my discovery requests to the other party. The "kicker" was him missed a pre-trial conference, at which time opposing attorney strategically moved for a default judgement, which the court granted, leaving little issue of the facts to be contended at trial. Subsequent efforts for the judge to set aside her ruling were to no avail. I protested to Nick and received a full refund, but I still lost in court.

For years I had tried to track down heirs of an abandoned empty parcel of land without much success. When I asked Attorney Meloche to assist, not only did he quickly track down all the heirs (some as far away as Ohio) but my purchase of the parcel is now complete in a short 2-month period of time. I highly recommend his expertise.

Hired Attorney Meloche for a real estate litigation civil case I filed in Worc. Mass. He put a very inexperienced attorney on my case. Case based on substitution of deed at closing prior to recording. I have evidence that the Attorney that substituted my deed , was told by her client (lender) no substitutions .Because of Meloche and Meloche Spencer Mass. Poor representation I lost my case , my house ,and ended up homeless. I would not recommend Michael Meloche for any legal services. After I lost ,he said to me personally that I got screwed ...you think !!!!

“No stars deserved but 1 given simply because it is the only way to share this cautionary post. Estate Preservation Law at which L Cammuso is a partner is the worst firm, in my opinion. Hard to say if they are just incompetent or willfully disrespectful and abusive of clients, but if your money is important to you, don’t let these people have a chance at it because, based on my experience, they’ll take it and laugh at you for your folly.”

f you want an incompetent, weak, lawyer look, no, further, Donna will take your money and right before trial, she will withdraw from the case because she knows she cannot handle the case. When she gets in front of a judge she tells the judge she didn't have enough time to prepare. But the money you paid her is gone, She will just take your money and run a terrible Lawyer do not go for her.

I came to Donna because of a referral by a lawyer I’d hired for another matter. It started as a consultation to help me with retirement amidst a “separation “. It ended up being a divorce. Through it all Donna proved to be very considerate regarding my problem. Making inquiries, consulting others, mediating between me and my soon to be ex-wife. Professional, yet compassionate and sensitive. I was, am pleased with her work and grateful to have been referred to her.

I’m currently in the middle of a divorce and Fran was highly recommended. I had a consultation where he tried giving me financial advise on my IRA? I did hire him and sent $5000 check same day.... tried to get in touch with him several times over 3 weeks with no response... he finally called and said he can’t do anything for me until he get paid... after having him check into it he says there was a mix up and his office cashed it 3 weeks ago! After reviewng all specifcs and working on this for 2 months with very little progress he called me to ask these questions.. does your wife work?!, do you have kids and how old?!, did you file for a divorce yet? He also recommended me to get my company appraised for 20k even though I was ok with the other sides offer. A very frustrating experience!

... a great lawyer knows the clerks, the bailiffs, <everybody> Put another way, review Fran's education and professional affiliations and you will understand why he was referred to me by my previous lawyer. Filling in the back story, I was involved in what became a three-year divorce. My ex- retained counsel, but kept viewing herself as entitled to more and more. I would think the case resolved, but she would change her mind to demand more. Upon hiring her fifth lawyer, she restarted the entire divorce negotiation. My one lawyer had understandably moved onto new cases. He recommended Fran as the guy to get the job done. And Fran did so. He was a gentleman, we were both fair, and he did bring the case to an authoritative conclusion.

Sorry but how can you recommend someone who took the most straightforward practice of refinancing a home and turn it into a ten month saga between two banks, title insurer, bar association and two lawyers? Jim Scola handled the refinance of my home in 2008. A month after signing the paperwork, my old lender still did not receive the payout. Lots of excuses later Jim finally revealed to me that he screwed up and lost the money from my new lender. His accounts were a total mess and he was way overdrawn. This violates many regulations for handling mortgages as I understand it. Mr Scola left me with TWO mortgages both who wanted to be paid. I hired another lawyer and lost more then $4000 in legal fees and a lot of sleep over this. We filed a complain with the Massachusetts Bar association and I believe that he was given some kind of legal warning but that is it. Mr Scola on many occasions said he would pay me back for the legal costs but he did not come through and is now ignoring my phone calls.

Mr Clifford was recommended to me by the MA Bar Association. I asked about his qualifications during our interview, and he told me he could represent me. I was only able to meet with him twice, which he charged an office office fee. Thereafter, he seemed to be avoiding me; he would not return phone calls and his office staff could find no record of my case. I waited hours for his return to the offie and strongly asserted my concerns for the statutes of limitations. He admitted that he never compiled a file for my case, and thought I should probably seek counsel elsewhere. He waisted my time as well as the timeline for the case and he took my money. I would strongly recommend not hiring this attorney.

Worst lawyer ever! She promised to fight for me, she acknowledged my case was basically a witch hunt and I was promised to be reunited with my daughter! This “lawyer “ did absolutely nothing! While in court she sat and listened with me while the other side and dcf flat out lie about my case. Dcf literally were mixing up my case with others. And Maureen said nothing, when I told her to speak up she assured me we would have our chance to speak. Two minutes later, without having a chance to defend myself the courts ordered a continuance! I fired Maureen that same day!! Worse lawyer around. If you want to win your case DO NOT GO WITH MAUREEN BOOKER!!!!

A few years back, I was falsely accused of of sexual abuse by an ex's step son in relation to my step grandchild. Let me say that the accuser wanted to make sure I was out of the family and so he choose the most horrific way, and that was to make a false allegation to the DCF about me abusing my grandchild, mostly out of jealously and the relationship I had with my grandchild. This experience basically ruined my life, as ex step son was also trying to have me arrested. I contacted many attorneys who were willing to take the case but once I interviewed them I realized they did not have a lot of experience with DCF rules, regulations and the Fair Hearing process. They seemed ok for a criminal case, but I was never charged, though I was investigated was use to scare the crap out of me, which it did. Those criminal defense attorneys saw dollar signs when they heard about my case and wanted to charge a large sum of money. After doing a ton of research and interviewing many attorneys I found Maureen Booker. I actually read an article about her and found a couple of other recommendations for her but not on Avvo. In the first 15 minutes of talking to her I knew she was the attorney for me. Her knowledge of the DCF and all their rules and regulations is amazing. She immediately started telling me all the violations they made and even could quote the exact rule and or regulation. I hired her right then and there. We met once and then had a few phone calls as we waited for the Fair Hearing to be scheduled. We met again at the fair hearing and she cut through the DCF case worker and supervisor as if she had a buzz saw. Right down the list of all the many rules they violated. Even the Fair Hearing officer started questioning the case worker and supervisor on how come they did what they did. I felt so much relief after the hearing, which was a first time in along time, I actually had a full nights sleep. Unfortunately the DCF moves in a time frame that is quite ridiculous, but after 1.5 years from the hearing date, and many phone calls, emails and letters to the DCF, I finally received the letter from the DCF stating that all claims against me are now unsupported!!! ( Those are DCF terms either supported or unsupported, like guilty or not guilty) I can not tell you how grateful I am to attorney booker. Please do your self a favor and hire her for all DCF matters, hopefully she will help you sleep at night also!!

this lawyer told me she was on her way to DSS to find out what the hold up was with the contact information in an adoption I signed. she told me she was on her way and she would call me from there but I never heard from her again. I signed adoption papers that said my attorney will be furnished with the contact info for my visits. I still have not gotten the info. 2 1/2 months have gone by since the adoption was finalized. The document I signed said i would recieve it in 2 weeks. What happened and why haven't I heard back from this attorney? this public attorney was assigned to me the day of the final adoption. I wouldn't recommend this attorney to anyone.

I had involvement with this lawyer when she was assigned to my family court case. Her actions traumatized my children and myself. She clearly showed favoritism to my ex who was not paying child support, had nothing to do with the children for years, had a criminal record and was abusive. All that and yet she still pushed for his involvement with the children, despite my warnings that it was not in the best interest of the children. This led to his brainwashing of the children and then going to briefly live with him.He then abandoned one of my children with his other ex and put the other in an institution.I was able to retrieve them but the emotional scars are lasting from the whole experience.I have thought about suing her several hundred times since then.

She was assigned as a parent coordinator to get me custody after my X tried told my son to run away from home, and tried to kill him with a knife. The kids discussed this with a counselor, and a court appointed attorney - both wanted me to take custody. Sue-Ellen wouldn't listen when I tried to talk to her, and kept interrupting every time I tried to talk. She lied consistently to me and my lawyer, was severely unprofessional, and finally had to be fired by my lawyer. When she was in court being fired, she tried blaming everything on her secretary. She claimed her secretary wasn't mailing things, when come to find out, she never wrote them up (liar right up to the end). She has absolutely no concern for the kids, their welfare, nor does she take her job serious. She was involved for 2 years, kept charging us money, and couldn't even perform the menial task of scheduling holidays.

Mr. Pineiro is very disrespectful towards his clients. He becomes easily annoyed when one tries to contact him. He was handling a case of mine, and it took 2 months for me to hear from him, and at that point, he was irate that I had called several times over a weeks period. From what I remember, his secretary is his college aged daughter who is very disrespectful over the phone. I also went into the office once because Mr. Pineiro made an appointment with me. I sat in his waiting room for 45 minutes and he never showed up. When I asked his "secretary/daughter" if he would be coming soon, she turned her head and rolled her eyes before calling him for me. She then told me he said he was in Boston and couldn't make it on time. When I did finally meet with him, he spent most of our time picking up phone calls, and blatantly yelling and disrespecting his fellow associates. I hope they get paid enough to deserve the type of treatment he puts out. I wouldnt even recommend him to an enemy!

Hired for estate planning. Got a bunch of canned program printouts none of which were reviewed by him. All done by secretary and incorrect and not professional. We had to scrap them all and have them done over. Good thing he is in probate because none of these documents which should have eliminated it were correct. He was sure to be there for taking the money though. Don't hire this guy for professional concise work. Best to do it yourself on a canned program for fifty bucks.

Charged 2000.00 for an expert opinion, after obtaining payment informs you that it is an oral opinion only.(no documentation) From the very beginning he will say many things to get you to trust that it is worth going forward. I had wisdom teeth removed that left me with a numb tongue, Clearly a result of to much novacane and hitting the lingual nerve.Three years later it is still numb. After recieving the 2000.00, Attorney Bradbury calls with the news that there is no sign of negligence. The expert opinion never had a conversation with me , and refused to put it in writing as to how he arrived at this conclusion.Turns out the expert told the lawyer he was not comfortable dealing directly with clients. As soon as the fee was received the tone changed. What made this even more distubing was that I informed the lawyer that a fellow lifeguard that I worked with had seen me dealing with a bloody mouth due to the frequent biting of my tongue and she then shared that she too had been to this oral surgeon Karen Robinson of Auburn ma., and i year later her bottom lip is still numb. I truly believe that this lawyer was diceptive, when I had arrived with the check the secretary held it up for him to see, from his office he nodded his head and smiled.I am only 21 and it was my mom that wrote the check, I had a bad feeling and wanted to call my mom because it was so awkward, but I did not but wish I did. This lawyer consumed alot of our time with his never ending rants about his accomplishments and intentions which seemed odd. While initally telling us it could go either way, he kept providing reasons like my age to encourage us to go forward. Due to a statute of limitations he hurried us along to pursue what he called an expert opinion. I can only imagine how many malpractice cases he has failed the client due to negligence that is not obvious, and charged them for it!

I am a past client of Louis Ciavarra. He was supposed to represent 3 plaintiffs and myself, a defendant in counterclaim, in a civil matter. The entire claim against me was for under $2,000.00. The entire suit was for under 65k. Mr. Ciavarra in 3 months charged over 228,000.00 and is trying to get it from me personally. There is no agreement from me to be responsible for the fees, nor did he do a conflict assessment and waiver as required under the rules. Currently, there is pending a BBO complaint against him and his firm for his conduct in this case.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
