I needed a lawyer that would listen to me . I was going through a custody issue with my ex-wife. I tried to explain my issues with other attorneys and they stated it was too complicated. I was about to give up until a friend of mine who is a lawyer told me that the best person to go to if I wanted to stand a chance of winning was Kimberly Phillips. I told her my story and all the issues that I was having. She told me that she understood what I was going through and knew exactly what to do to help me with my situation. I hired her because I knew that she really wanted to help me. Her actions spoke louder than her words. She always contacted me continuously to keep me up to date at all times on what direction we were headed. I never had to wonder what was going on. She was always available to answer all my questions. She is very honest. She always showed concern. It seems as if she never stop working. She made me feel that I was her only client. I appreciated her kindness and her patience. Mrs. Phillips explained legal terms to me in a way that I could understand it. Mrs. Phillips did endless research on my case and was able to discover things about my ex-wife that I didn't know. In court, Mrs Phillips STOOD HER ground. I was very impressed. She is very good. If it wasn't for Mrs.Phillips, I would not have won custody of my son. I can not thank her enough. I have never met anyone like her. She is the BEST.

I rarely, if ever, write reviews, but had to make an exception for Kimberly Hughes Phillips. She is a true professional and she represented me well, in a very difficult case. Mrs. Phillips worked tirelessly to make sure my concerns were heard in court, regarding my concerns about my children. Her hard work enabled me to obtain primary and legal custody of my children. She thoroughly listened to my case and did her best to make sure that all of my expectations in the case were met. Her staff is also fantastic. Would definitely recommend Kimberly Hughes Phillips.

Cheryl is extremely unprofessional and waits to the last minute to review/work on your case. She went out of town for 10 days and never notified me so that I would know my timeline. She racks up her bill by doing rewrites/ reviews of the documents instead of having a simple meeting with the opposed team. Pads her bill by having conversations with her assistant daily, so you are billed twice for the same conversation.
When I scheduled an appointment to discuss the bill, which took four (4) weeks, she did NOT have anything in front of her to justify her time.
Her response to why I was upset is that I did not get what I wanted.
I just wanted to pay for services that should have been provided and not perked around and overcharged by twice the amount than what I should have been billed
I would NOT recommend her firm.

I do not understand how two different people, from the same law firm, with the same access to information, come up with such a drastic difference of opinion, other than personal bias.
In 2019 Ms. Carper recommended that I have sole legal custody and that mom be on supervised visitation, and in 2022 when my daughter finally got that stability, my daughter thrived. When Ms. Dillon took over as GAL for the appeal that was going on, she pushed for my daughter to go back to her mother, and if I understood her recommendations correctly, that Mom have sole legal custody.
And I done believe that recommendation was based on what was best for my child, but was made because Ms. Dillon doesn't want to admit that she has made bad calls that have favored the mother over what was best for my daughter.
I feel like it doesn't matter what I say though, as It is going to be ignored, and blown off as a father who is just mad because the GAL didn't side with him, but I am at the point where I am beyond frustrated and angry at the way Ms. Dillon.
But I am not mad because the GAL didn't side with me, I'm mad because Ms. Dillon has continuously pushed me in to agreeing to orders, and then held it against me that I followed those orders. She continuously ignored anything that didn't fit with her narrative of events, including the observations of Doctor's and counselors. and she even made her own observations about how the mother was negatively impacting my relationship with my daughter, and then recommended the mother have custody so that she could facilitate resolving those issues. I feel like Ms. Dillon has used her "authority" to retaliate against me for all the times i have pointed out that her plan of putting my child back with her mother isn't working, that she was being deceived by the mother, and that she was making assessments about my parenting style and mental health that she was in no way qualified to make.
I have felt like Ms. Dillon has had a bias in favor of my child's mother since she came onto the case. And when I walked out of court in January and found out that one of the mother's witness went to the same church and Ms. Dillon, granted they hadn't seen each other in a while, I it only furthered my concerns about her bias towards in father of my child's mother.
I don't believe that Ms. Dillon has the best interest of my daughter in mind when she makes recommendations on custody or visitation.
I love my daughter, and I have fought for 13 years to be a part of her life and keep her safe from her mother's neglect and abuse. And for 5 years I thought I had done that, then a year ago Ms. Dillon made recommendations for my daughter to go back to her mother, and was celebrating with her mother in her accomplishment, since then exactly what I said would happen has happened and everything has gone downhill. My daughter's mental health has plummeted since Ms. Dillon made the recommendations for a change in custody so that my child’s mother could pull my child out of a residential treatment facility AGAINST the advice of her long term counselors.
I am an Army veteran, with a long history of service to my community and nation, with no history of drug or alcohol abuse, or any other factor that would warrant her recommendations to keep my child away from me for almost a year. I have an MBA, PMP, a stable career with a TS clearance, and a supporting family where my daughter thrived. And my name has been drug through the mud because I have wanted to see my daughter succeed in life, and wouldn’t blindly agree for my daughter to go back to her mother, for no other reason than that’s what she wanted to do because her mother would let her do almost anything she wanted.
What has happened to my daughter is a tragedy, and is the reason why no one actually trust the "system" that is supposedly in place to help them. I would not trust anyone from this law firm as a GAL.

Alison anders commits legal malpractice and is a professional liar. She refused to take me as a client solely on the basis she thinks I'm too poor. She charged me 450 for a 15 minute consultation where she rudely insinuated I have no right to my son. Shes a professional scam artist that uses her career to steal from people. She should be prison. If it were possible to give zero stars, this would be a zero. My daughter hired Ms. Devon Humphreys of this firm to handle a custody issue. During the course of her representation, she gave late and erroneous advice that resulted in serious, negative results in my daughter's case in addition to costing a ridiculous amount of money. On the day of trial, Ms. Humphries withdrew because we wanted an explanation for a late change in advice that she had no explanation for and chose to withdraw instead. After the withdrawal, several attorneys suggested that the conduct in this case could be considered malpractice. Ms. Humphries advised my daughter to compromise her claim for terms that were far less favorable than those eventually achieved by new counsel. Save yourself the time and money and look elsewhere.

You truly get what you pay for, especially in legal representation. And if your kids mean enough to you you won't think twice about retaining Craig Sampson. A father in a custody battle in VA can be a bad position to be in and bring low expectations regarding the outcome. Craig is the best in the business hands down. Extremely well prepared and has a court presence second to none. He will shine for you if given the opportunity. His pre-trial performance stopped the opposition in their tracks so overwhelmingly, they withdrew the case prior to the actual trial. Where they were not prepared, he was and made that day the trial. The judge acknowledged every point and legal precedent he presented. I can't say enough to truly explain his skill sets and professionalism, but you can witness it yourself. Although this is business, I will be eternally grateful for what he did for me and my daughters ensuring we stayed as one, family.

I hired Johnathan for a semi complicated custody case. After being hired I found out that my ex had already filed and we had a court date already set. I sent this information to Johnathan he informed me that he had prior arrangements and couldn’t make it but would have someone step in on his place. Emily was wonderful and professional and also knowledgeable.
My issue is more with billing and communication on what I would be billed. I turned out that due to Johnathans personal conflict with my initial court date I would not be paying 350 for any communication with Johnathan and an additional 250 for Emily. Had I known this would be the car I would had asked to be transferred over to Emily only as she was able to show up for my case and while my case was semi complicated it an experienced lawyer should’ve been wholly able to navigate it better than myself.
Additionally, dusting a family emergency I called his office on a Thursday at 2:40 and was informed that he was not at his desk but would call me back. Due to urgency I then sent an email of which did not get responded to until Monday. He then informed me that his lack of response was because I did not include his assistant or the other attorney that I didn’t even know had been added to my case. Having never hired an attorney before better communication was expected in terms of who I would get billed for. The handout while full of information on how much certain tiers of employees would cost is helpful but really of no use when no one communicates and says this attorney will also be added to your case at your expense because on personal conflicts.
I discontinued his services after he could not be reached and I informed him of my issues, feelings, and how I felt about his services and he responded with he “respectfully disagreed”
I would recommend Emily as I actually did get to met with her in person and speak with her. I know billing and lack of communication was not her fault.

I selected Jon McHugh of the Livesay & Myers Leesburg office to help me through a recent divorce. I unfortunately have experience with other divorce attorneys and because of previous issues, I interviewed a few others before I finally picked Jon.
I was immediately impressed with his candor and demeanor. He didn't tell me what I wanted to hear, like many have. He also didn't look at his watch before he said hello or goodbye like I've experienced in the past. He listened to my story and gave me his thoughts about a path forward. I was sold on him after the first five minutes.
Working with Jon and his support staff was my favorite of all time attorney interactions. Jon and Margaret Stanley were extremely responsive to any of my questions or requests and I never got the feeling that they were looking for things to charge me for like I've experienced in the past.
The bottom line is that the final settlement came out much better than we discussed in the beginning. I chalk that up to Jon knowing what he is doing and the strategy he laid out working better than expected. Exceeding expectations is how you get satisfied customers and I certainly am one. As a side note, this cost me less in legal fees than I expected and much less than I've previously experienced.
I would highly recommend the Livesay & Myers law firm and Jonathan McHugh in specific.

Attorney Simon-Tov was my most recent GAL for my 13 year old and 4 year old. I’ve been in and out of court for several years for my kids and dealt with different GAL’s. She was the first person to really collect the facts and be the most accurate in her report for court. She was the first to really be fair and honest. She definitely did everything a GAL supposed to, which I found amazing. Her being the GAL this time really made a positive impact for the better on my 13 year old. While I still wish differently for my 4 year old, unfortunately there are laws in place that prohibits certain changes to the custodial order. But over all she was great! She was approachable, really researched, professional, listens, and fair! The BEST GAL you could ask for!

She was not very interested in telling us what she could do with our case but was clear on telling us her hourly and retainer fee and had the nerve to add we could pay her more money to file a simple change order. Allison is the best! Dealing with custody matters can be nerve-racking. When you are coping with a high conflict custody dispute on top of all it can become overwhelming. Allison took care of everything. We would not have kept our sanity without her. Allison kept us up to date and eased our anxiety. The Moses law firm took my case despite having circumstances that weren't really in my favor. Prior to hiring them to represent me, I researched several other firms that handle personal injury cases, but the reviews for Moses law firm convinced me to give them a call. I spoke to Mr.Moses and was very impressed with his genuine interest in my circumstances as well as his positive personality. In the midst of my case being handled, a close friend was in an accident and because of my interaction with this law firm, I immediately referred him to them and thus far, he's happy I did. I can never reach anyone by phone. Miss Churchill is still holding a check for my son and was supposed to be making payments to the court on his behalf. She has yet to do so or contact me after calling her office for months now. Her staff are not doing their job as secretaries to reply to clients. I am very disappointed in their unprofessional behaviors and would like our money order returned, but can't ever get ahold of anyone or my have my calls returned. I don't recommend using her for your court needs.

I am beside myself for not switching attorneys. But when you’re in the middle of that horrible situation, you think your attorney will steer you through it. My settlement was terrible, no where near where it should’ve been, and there was never a clear strategy or plan of attack. I feel my defensewas basically “phoned in”. And honestly, looking back, I had a clear “winning” case, but that shouldn’t be for the client to push for, especially when the client is in the middle of the worst stage of their lives. That’s the point of hiring a qualified professional attorney. Very upset with what my life and my future now looks like. Someone’s life and future financial stability is too important to not do a thorough job. I’m devastated that I now have to pick up the pieces of my life and figure out how to move forward.

I would not recommend. There were many times I had to remind her she represented me and not the other party because she prioritized getting any information THEY requested over what I needed before court. I also had the exact same experience another client posted for their review, despite stressing that we needed to ask for child and spousal support she said, we can ask for that during your divorce case and waited until right before we were about to walk into court to run the paperwork up to the clerks office so not only did we not get that set but because paperwork had not been submitted until the last minute I was ordered to pay the other parties attorneys fees. The only time she was quick to make sure I recieved paperwork was when I went to sign off to end her representation as my lawyer. I was told I owed her thosands of dollars and because my retainer had been used up and when asked why this was the first time I was hearing about this was told "we've been emailing the bills to you" despite me repeatedly informing her I was having issues recieving emails. The multiple times I was in her office there was no mention that she was now billing me well after and that my retainer was used up. Instead I was handed a large envelope on the spot that was as thick as a book listing billed hours. You are better off handing your money directly to the other party and saving yourself the time and frustration.

I recently hired Donna based on her website and the testimonials. That was my bad. I now know that Donna has had 5 different lawyer firms in like 5 years so I didn't see all the bad reviews.
Donnie is kinda mean and talks down to her clients. She bills alot. Like every possible penny. She lost our case and just giggled and sent more invoices. She humiliated me and made me poorer than i was before my ex.
I wish I could go back and hire a good lawyer. There are way better lawyers than her.

Ugh. Do not hire Donna Dougherty to handle your case. When you meet her, you'll find that she is, in my opinion, brash and abrasive and unquestionably condescending. Your first thought is "Perfect, that's how she's going to work tirelessly on my behalf." You'll be wrong. That's how she'll continue to treat you and good luck getting to effectively advocate on your behalf. In my specific experience, she will rather yell at you (as her client) than work with opposing counsel on an amicable resolution (as I've learned since severing ties with this firm).

If you care about you best chances avoid Ron Slaven! The rest of the staff are nice. Slaven is not worth the price and most likely won’t use any evidence in court that you’re paying for and will not use any evidence you give him or legal aid. Most important he will not update you how he will proceed to handle the case. John and Janet and Angel are much better. Avoid Ron Slaven he even forgot to bring up my only witness and did not use one single document or evidence that he printed out or document you pay for such as police, medical, or legal documents. He wings it the day before unprepared, forgetful, and used no evidence that I ended up paying $2,000 for he never brought it up in court. He only cares about money not you don’t make the same mistake.

I hired Ronnie to do a custody case for me.He was well prepared at the hearing. Slaven didn't think a judge would go for my case. The case has gone into settlement. Slaven has done everything I have asked of him.I have been given copies of all the paperwork done for my case. I have been kept up to date on very aspect of the case. I have monthly statements. He is very nice and easy to get along with. He makes you feel very calm. He is very straight forward and easy to understand.

After having a difficult time (and that’s being nice) being able to see his kids, my boyfriend and I decided to seek legal help. He was told about Mary Napier, and we decided to go for a consultation because it couldn’t hurt to see if she could help. After having a horrible experience with another law firm he was not expecting much. From day 1, Mary has been able to answer any and all questions we’ve had (and I have a lot as I’ve never gone through anything like this before). My boyfriends ex was something else at the beginning of all this, and all he wanted to do was be a father. Mary actually spoke up for him in court, which he didn’t have before with his former lawyer. She listened to what we had to say and didn’t sugar coat things..which I appreciate! I’ve been extremely happy with Mary’s willingness to explain things to me. Let’s be honest, child support and custody is a difficult process. She made it as painless and easy as possible. The only issue I had was sometimes my emails would go unanswered, and I completely understand she is a very busy person! Maybe having an assistant help out with emails could help her out some. We are very, very thankful and happy with our outcome. He gets to be the best father to his 2 girls..co-parenting is actually happening with his ex (hallelujah!) and I get to be a “step” mom to the most precious and sweetest girls. Our little family thanks Mary Napier for everything she’s done for us!

Just typing her name gives me awful anxiety. Mary Napier doesn't understand the impact her poor decisions have on her clients. After working with her for nearly an entire year, she went to our first court date completely unprepared, not even understanding the basic facts of our case. She consistently ignores her emails, and when asked about the lack of communication she told me I have to schedule a phone conference if I want speedy communication. That isn't much to ask, so i started setting up phone appointments. We live out of state so we couldn't meet in person. She missed 4 appointments in a row on the phone after telling us that it was the best way to contact her. Additionally, any time we asked a question she would snicker or chuckle like we were asking a silly question. She never reassured us of anything when we had concerns. The answers all sounded the same. "Well I can't say either way," "well it COULD work for you, but I can't say for certain," "I mean I honestly can't really say." These are just a few examples of her terrible responses to our questions. After our first hearing, she sent us an email saying it went great. As we read the email, it turns out every single thing our "opponent" asked for was granted. How exactly did you come to the conclusion that court went well, when you failed to explain to the judge even the most basic and essential points of our side? It's like we spent $1500 on a lawyer for the other party. Mary is condescending and useless in the courtroom. In fact, I'm confident that I could have represented myself with better results than we had with this lawyer.
Mary doesn't keep track of important points, she doesn't take the time to understand the full story, she is terrible at communicating, and she lacks the passion necessary to defend people in cases that change their entire lives. She doesn't understand that as a lawyer, it is her duty to zealously represent her clients. She also doesn't understand that if she isn't performing her job well, she is impacting the client for the rest of their life. To her, it's like the paycheck is all that matters.
We decided we were fed up when Mary thought it would be appropriate to HANG UP on us after we told her we feel she lacks empathy and compassion for our case.
The saddest part of this for Mary Napier is that our son is only 3 years old now, and we will likely be needing a lawyer until he is 18 due to the difficult relationship with his birth mother. We were looking for a lawyer we could maintain a working relationship with and return to for cases in the future. Unfortunately, Mary wasted almost a year of our lives that we will never get back, and at a critical time in the development of our son.
It is blatantly obvious that this attorney doesn't know what she's doing. Save yourself the time and money and heartache and find somebody else!!

Mary Napier went above and beyond for me with my child custody case. I was asking for 50/50 joint custody, however she managing to get me primary physical and legal custody. She was very professional and always knew the answer to any legal questions I asked. I felt like the odds were against me going into court but during court her professionalism and experience made me optimistic before the judge decided. I would recommend her to anyone in a child custody battle especially a father.

I had Angie simpkins as my court appointed attorney and she had no contact with me about the case whatsoever until on the day of court at the last minute. She would not return my phone calls and I had to leave multiple messages. Plus I got charged with a bogus crime and still ended up pulling jail time over it and she did nothing to try to keep me from going to jail. I have a son in high school and my mom can pass away at any minute but she didn't care about that either!

This attorney was recommended by another attorney to contact for information regarding divorce. I was not able to speak with Ms. Ashby; however, I was consulted by her partner. This attorney answered my questions but informed me it would be a long process and by the time we finished I would owe her $200,000.00 - 400,00.00 US dollars what a crock!!! Then she sent me a bill for our 6 minute conversation over the telephone for $ 400.00. Which they stated she charged $400.00 an hour. How does 6 minutes constitute one hour. STAY CLEAR OF THIS LAW FIRM THEIR OUT FOR YOUR MONEY NOT TO HELP YOU!!
