I cannot say enough great things about David and his team. Needing an attorney was never something I thought I'd need, but having reached that point, I am so grateful to have had the David Alexander Law Firm referred to me. They helped me navigate through a painful process and made sure my needs were addressed. It was a long journey, and they helped me through it every step of the way. They are amazing people and I cannot thank them enough for their hard work and care for their clients.

It’s not often I can say that I’ve enjoyed working with an attorney. The David Gottfried Alexander Law Firm was outstanding. I felt heard, understood and empowered. The firm has a deep understanding of Texas property law. The firm was a tremendous asset to me in my litigation. I would hire the firm again! And I would recommend that you give them a call to explore your legal issues

I was referred to Hilton by a colleague who went through the divorce process roughly 18 years ago. I'm glad I went with him. Hilton has been great throughout the process. He is communicative and took a reasonable, measured approach to my case. His counsel was practical and direct, which I very much appreciated. Divorce is a tough process and Hilton helped me focus on what's important and blocking out the emotional distractions. We decided to keep things basic and unambiguous, focusing on the well-being of my son. If you are looking for a reasonable, straightforward approach to getting through a divorce, I highly recommend Hilton. He's got a lot of experience in the field and it shows.

I cannot say enough good things about Hilton Moore. He does not hold your hand by lying to you. He lays out the brass tacks as it is. He is professional and timely in his responses. If I ever get into the issue I was in I will for sure hire him. He also was great in helping a friend of mine by giving her a great consultation. She too was happy with his honesty in her consult with him. I won’t go too deep about my reason for hiring Mr. Moore but he got the job done by telling me what I needed to know and to do to ensure we had the best chance at winning. No bullshitting me or blowing smoke up my ass. If I need a lawyer in my corner: Hilton Moore is the first call I will be making. I swear by him and will be referring any of my friends who have family court issues to him directly.

Okay folks. After being audited by the Texas Comptroller and them creating a tax bill of $175,000, I hired Curtis Osterlo to defend me. Long story short, I recorded all of the conversations between Mr. Osterlo and myself. In the beginning, he mentioned the names of people at the Comptroller NOT to talk to. Two months later, while racking up legal fees, he suggested he would circle back around and speak to Jane Doe (one of the people NOT to talk to). That is when I fired him. In my opinion, this law firm is in bed with the Comptroller to generate legal fees. After firing Curtis, I handled my case myself. The comptroller didn't know what to do now? Their boy wonder was out. I proved to the Comptroller I didn't owe the money by emailing a copy of the Federal and State laws. I ended up winning without Curtis. He wanted me to settle and charge me $35,000 for his time. I will never do business in the state of Texas again!

Mark Sampson is a great lawyer. He it is very professional and knows what he’s doing. I was recommended by my friend.I came into his office with a DWI charge and told him my situation and he told me he was very confident he could get it dismissed and he did and he is very affordable. From my experiences he’s worth every dollar and you can’t go wrong having Mark Sampson as your lawyer.

Absolute charlatans. Initially spoke with Kennedy who told me everything I wanted to hear and referred me to Alonzo. All I was asking for is to have the court and force my custody rights in the Texas divorce decree. After draining my wallet for $25,000 over 2 years my case never got in front of a judge. My ex-wife's crackerjacks lawyer from some legal.com website kept my lawyer on her heels the entire time. My lawyer also found inventive ways to charge me more money and get a psychiatrist friend of hers into my pocket as well. Adding insult to injury, a friend of mines mother works at a competing law firm and was blown away that Gray and Becker was so ineffectual over something so black and white as custody outlined in a divorce decree IN THE SAME STATE THE DIVORCE WAS PROPAGATED.

If you have ever been involved in a custody dispute, you know how stressful and scary it can be. Caroline Alonzo and the staff at Gray Becker, were the most amazing and supportive throughout the entire process. We were kept in the loop through the entirety and we had the most confidence having them on our side. I cannot express enough how this horrible and scary experience was carried by Caroline Alonzo and the Gray Becker staff with integrity and class. Thank you Caroline and staff, for making our family safe and complete.

No for Court appointed attorney! My Son was apprehensive about receiving a court appointed attorney for a Serious charge in Williamson County. Court appointed Attorneys are known for putting very little into their clients cases. He was absolutely right ! The day of court Gorski still had not talked with my Son , he didn’t review the pertinent videos that would have helped showed self defense & get his bond reduced and he didn’t talk to witnesses. Prior to court my Son tried to call him but he was blown off. Every time I talked with him he reminded me how busy he was handling another important case. He would say my Sons case was going to take a long time & he was very busy. He kept lying saying he was going to look at the videos & when asked did he look at the videos he said “no I’m so busy”. That’s unprofessional. Your work load (other cases) should never be your clients problem. We understood the case wasn’t going to be resolved quickly. We asked him to at least get the bond decreased. He failed at that because he wasn’t prepared & didn’t know enough about the case to justify the request for a reduced bond. He didn’t have the decency to inform my Son he wasn’t successful. He had me do it. When my son talked to him 2 months later via phone, Gorski told him he’s setting up to go to trial in January. Gorski you’re supposed to discuss this with your client before making a decision like this. My son had to ask him to schedule a bond hearing.(the Judge recommended this in court). He still hadn’t looked at the videos & he still hadn’t talked with witnesses. I advised my Son to release him. I hired an attorney (Winters & Chidester). Within 2 weeks these lawyers looked at the video, talked with my Son, sat down, showed & talked to the prosecutor to show my Sons side of the story, the prosecutor agreed after seeing the videos it’s a probable self defense case. The bond was reduced & he was released. No matter what a person’s financial barrier is, it is your duty to treat your clients with respect, dignity and due diligence. I’m a Nurse I practice this every time I work. If you can’t do this stop accepting these clients Gorski. I recommend you ask for another Lawyer if he’s assigned to you. He lacks integrity, he’s belittling, and unprofessional. I do not recommend.

A neighbor of mine here in Far West Texas attempted to steal 2/3rds of my one acre parcel of land with what was proven to be a fraudulent claim of adverse possession. The neighbor is a retired county judge and his brother is also a lawyer; he had free legal services at his disposal. My neighbor is a long standing member of the good old boy network down here in Far West Texas; his track predatory track record not withstanding. Jodi took my case; she took on an ex county judge along with his brother’s law firm and beat them both handily. I retained possession of my property. The one acre parcel is all I have, and I am so thankful to have had Jodi and her team in my corner fighting for me every step of the way!

After 3 years of being classified disabled and not given work clearance by a group of 5 doctors, and having gone through all my savings paying bills, mortgage, insurance, taxes yet continually denied for Social Security Disability, and no money for a lawyer, my medical staff signed me up for legal assistance. A couple of days after, Jodi called me. Explained she’s ‘criminal defense’ but she wanted to help. We met at least weekly for about 2 months. From my memory, stories etc, she tracked down doctors, police officers, etc etc. she demanded that the Social Security Court hear my case. We got a court date 5 weeks ahead. We appeared before the judge with well over 3000 pages of evidence. She told the judge she was not a specialist in medical law but defense. After a hearing that lasted about 3 hours, she and I both thanked the Judge for his time, at which time he congratulated Jodi on a spectacular presentation and research in a ‘strange’ field. He adjourned advised we’d both be alerted after he reviews the evidence and makes a decision. About 2 weeks, we both received a judgement. She won for me! Got maximum allowed AND total reimbursement for back pay dating back over 3 years! Jodi, in my case, was prepared, had a stellar plan and saved. me from life on the street! I owe her my Everything! Thanks again Jodi! I love you!!!!!!

To be fair and honest, I would not recommend this lawyer to a friend, but to maybe somebody with a very small case. She was a waste of my time, ( I stayed in Houston, TX at the time), money, and effort. I traveled to her office from Houston, with faith, thinking that she had it all for this case. She talked about how she was going to do it all, plan, write memo's. The thing that I remember mostly is that she kept emailing me to "hang in there". Hang in where!! Are you working on and are going to take on this case or aren't you?! Don't waste my darn time! If she did not think that she could take on heavy case, such as a writ of habeas corpus (our case) then don't get us excited in the beginning having we think that you are going to be dedicated, don't take our money as a d*mn retainer, and don't keep sending emails stating that you are working on it and how I'm hanging in there! I DON'T WANNA HEAR IT! She took "her fees" out of the retainer that we paid her and told us that she had other cases and was too busy. WHAT!? She basically took on other cases and left ours, an innocent family, after having been fighting the stupid state of Texas for 28 years, and resigned. Was it money the reason?? Was it lack of knowledge for a writ of habeas? Or was it really fear? Was this case too heavy for you? She should have stated this crap way in the darn beginning! She then refunded my $$ to my parents when it was I who paid her from my bank card. Which kind of a lawyer is this and what kind of business is she running? She could have gotten sued for that alone! Do not waste my time, Lady!

Ms. McNamara came highly recommended to me. Ultimately, and after spending lots of money over many months, I really felt that she cared much more about her reputation in the legal community and how opposing counsel felt much more than helping me get through an awful situation in my life quickly and equitably. She had good attention to detail but ultimately failed to help me in any tangible way. We turn to attorneys to help us navigate the complex legal system and advocate for us and I did not feel I received these things even a little bit from Ms. McNamara. I was genuinely surprised at how poor my experience was given how highly recommended she was to me and how much money I wasted. Would never hire her again.

I interviewed for them and this was the rudest and worst interview I have ever ever done. I was interviewed by Steven (the senior partner) and Michele (Director of land use) and wow… I was taken away with how rude they were towards me and just ignore me and talking among themselves. They were talking about me in front of me. Very straightforward to the point that it was very rude and dismissed my questions. I am glad I did not accept the job offer here. I noticed the reviews on here as well about the company culture. I asked about the turnover rate and it seemed too high. They said the turn over people stayed for a few months….. And after just one interview and the recruiter making strange hints about the company culture. The pay was NOT worth it. Being a lawyer isn’t everything and neither is working for a law firm who shows they don’t care about maintaining a healthy work culture to keep employees. Have to learn how to interact with others to be a presentable and to be a well respected lawyer.

I spoke to Adam Meury as I was referred his name through my Legal Services. Adam was very nice and helpful in all my questions related to a petition my daughter received. Provided the fee’s I needed to hire him. He stated he needed to speak to my daughter first as it was regarding her. I was excited and made my daughter aware how nice he was. My daughter spoke to him and it was a totally different Adam she spoke to. He was rude to my daughter and not quite sure if it’s because she is young or not- no excuse for the way he acted. He wouldn’t let my daughter speak any more on the issue and told my daughter “He doesn’t make the laws in Texas. Good luck in finding a lawyer to represent you.” Second experience with a family lawyer in Texas and I am just shocked and amazed at how rude and dismissive they are to someone willing to pay the monies needed to hire them. I do not recommend him at all.

Unfortunately, I echo the previous reviewer. I was referred to Mr. Muery thorough Hyatt Legal (May 2019), 5 months later nothing has been completed. A request to speak to Mr. Muery directly was ignored, and emails go unanswered for several business days. I was forwarded to at least 3 associates to "quickly resolve" the lack of completion..to only have the same results...nothing completed. Recently (Oct 2019) I called Hyatt Legal to complain about his results and they notified me that he no longer is a member....explains why he's not working on my cases. Instead of being professional and stating he no longer accepts Hyatt Legal Members, he chose just to blow me off and let my cases go dormat.

This firm has been given to me by my Metlife plan, I have a simple matter for collecting a court order judgement for 8 k . I guess this is not worth their time and quickly say conflict of interest BUT CANNOT tell me what that conflict is ? I am sure their is no conflict as this is a local bodyshop avoiding legal judgement .. I would be skeptical as I don't buy this conflict of interest. If you as a attorney can not enforce a judges order than how successful are you in other matters or this is about not enough money ?

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
