I hired Leah to assist me in dealing with an employment dispute. I found Leah to be extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of the law in relation to my case and was extremely responsive to my needs. She was a true "bull dog" who continued to push the other side when they became slow to respond to questions and requests. In the end, Ms. Farmer got me a much better settlement than I could have on my own. I would hire Leah in a minute if I would find myself dealing with any future legal issues in the employment field.

Ms. Farmer helped my husband and I navigate a non-compete employment contract issue. She was thorough and efficient. She supplied us with actual cases that backed up our position and helped us make sense of all the legal jargon. We would certainly hire her again in the future.

My mother case was taken Pro Bono. She worked on her job for 26 yrs. and was terminated when she took a leave for a knee replacement. The case was in Civil Court for 3 long yrs. Struggling to comprehend lawyer mumbo jumbo, The Judge suggested/ & referred the case to Noelle Brennan & Associates, Ltd. From that moment on everything changed. The team at Noelle Brennan & Associates, Ltd. took the case with open arms, after the EEOC & other attorneys said no. The team made themselves fully available in every aspect imaginable, being very savvy with communication; from phone calls, to meeting & emails. The compassion that was shown for my mom's case was nearly immeasurable. The other lawyers (opposing counsel) intimidated my mom so much, that she developed anxiety when having to meet. The team at Noelle Brennan & Associates, Ltd. made certain that they were not intimidated. In fact they were thrilled to take on the challenge. Through experience , leadership, empathy, devotion, & dedication the team at Noelle Brennan & Associates, Ltd. fought to get my mom 3 times the original offer! In my opinion they were God sent. My mother walked away so happy and relieved. She felt like a human being again and not just another case number. Thank you, for all that you all have done. Thank you

As owner of a family general contracting company specializing in municipal projects, Matt's expertise and ability are invaluable to us whenever we need his assistance. We were first introduced to him when he was with Winston and Strawn, where he helped us win a case against a subcontractor who had walked off the job. When he struck out on his own, it was a no-brainer to continue to use him. Since then he has helped us in disputes against not only subcontractors but also owners, ie, municipalities and public boards. Matt has a great talent for discerning the subtle nuances of the AIA construction agreement (a superficially simple document with great underlying complexity) and articulating those points clearly, concisely and to our great benefit. In fact, I have seen attorneys with many more years in construction law appear dumbfounded by the AIA contract and what it contains. Furthermore, Matt was able to quickly understand the different construction techniques, processes and technical jargon that was needed to argue our cases, an ability we place paramount in our representation. (After all, if you cannot understand a difficult technical point, how can you make others see it?) Finally, when the situation requires it, Matt is a skilled negotiator, adept at building consensus and providing resolutions that were satisfactory to all parties, thus saving expenditure of far more resources in further litigation. Above all, Matt is an intelligent, ambitious and driven attorney who was always available, and always had our best interests in mind. I can't recommend him enough.

¨When searching for the right heart doctor, you start by finding out the doctor's credentials and whether the doctor has a steady hand. You want to make sure this doctor will perform with their one chance opportunity. Finding the right lawyer is no different. Matt Sullivan and his firm represented my father in his criminal appeal. My father, a vascular surgeon for more than 30 years, was wrongly convicted on federal charges. At trial, my father was represented by the biggest and supposedly best lawyers in Chicago. Matt Sullivan was a refreshing change. He understood the law better than the supposedly big time firms. He didn't just offer hope; he brought real legal solutions. His understanding of the law and his legal guidance has very much impressed my family."

Erin is an amazing attorney who not only handles the case with meticulous attention to details, but also inspires hope in her clients. I had a very complicated case that would frankly give many people headache. Erin quickly organized the facts into sections and figured out what needed to be done soon after the consultation. She responded to my inquiries in a very timely manner and paid meticulous attention to every detail. One of the many great things about Erin is that she inspires hope in her clients. Every time I talked to her, I felt that everything will turn out to be just fine, which offered so much mental assurance during a difficult time. She has this special charisma that makes you feel that you could trust her instantly. She had been very honest and consistent from the very beginning and demonstrated so much professional expertise throughout the whole process. I'm very grateful that I was able to find Erin at this particular moment in my life. Thank you for all your help!

Vadim, a great lawyer, I will definitely recommend over any other lawyers in the area. He made it super easy for me to understand my case and my charges that I was charge with and what options I have. He help me step by step very professional, very helpful and very respectful. I also kept asking him stupid questions to see if he will get pissed n start cursing me out, but he answered all my questions to my level and made me sure that I 100% understood. We did joke, but he made sure he answered all my questions and I was happy with all his answers. Great guy. But hopefully I will never get to see him again lol need to stay out of trouble.

I own multiple businesses and Eric Bell has done law work for me and consultation work for the last 15 years. I have also referred several people to him (at least 5 family members or friends that used him) over the years. This guy puts his heart and soul into every case he gets whether it is something trivial or major, in cook county or has to drive to Dupage county or a neighboring courthouse he will get it done. You obviously have to have some intelligence to be an effective attorney but to really get things done you have to have a great work ethic and be likable too. Eric fits the bill, he has a fierce work ethic and I don't know if I ever met anyone that doesn't like him. I tell everyone I can about Eric. As nice as he is, he's an animal in the court room. I would be happy to speak to you about Eric and would proudly put my name all over his endorsement.

Leslie Rosen is one of the finest attorneys with whom I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and working. She took on my very important case after it had been mismanaged by several others who nearly destroyed it. Her skill at quickly grasping matters at the very core and then organizing and presenting facts simply and brilliantly - cutting out the unnecessary - immediately added a voice and clarity to what had been muted. The result: a really bad decision was reversed on appeal. We won! This would never have happened if I hadn't hired Leslie Rosen. What I appreciated even more than anything was Leslie's honesty and candor, and that she listened to what I told her and took it to heart. She was completely up front with me about the situation in which I found myself. She was firm, but she genuinely cared: the best advocate you could ever hope to have.

There are not enough words to tell you how fabulous this attorney is! She took a hard case for us, an appeal from a bankruptcy judge who charged us with contempt. Everyone, except Kim, told us that the case would never win. But we believed we were not in violation of the bankruptcy code, and Kim felt the same way. Because she put her legal skills together with an attitude of belief in the case, we won! We could not have found a better lawyer for this appeal. Thank you to Kim!

Adam Lasker has been my election attorney and is now our legislative counsel. I could not be more pleased with his work in both arenas. He has an excellent understanding of election and municipal law and is wonderfully patient in helping me and my fellow candidates/trustees understand and execute our legal options. He promptly responds to calls, texts and emails, even when we need his input during an evening meeting. Adam also has the back-up and support of the firm that literally wrote the book on municipal law in Illinois, Ancel Glink. In the past year Adam, with the support of a partner, successfully litigated two TRO suits on my behalf. The first in Federal Court that my party had to file to get on the ballot. Then, as soon as we won and were seated, a second suit filed by the mayor to try to keep us from accomplishing anything. Each time, despite his already heavy work load, Adam quickly focused, analyzed the situation, drafted brilliant arguments, and got the job done. I whole heartedly recommend you call Adam Lasker when you decide to run for public office - and after you win.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
