I hired Jon for a DUI matter and when I appeared in Court he had all of the paperwork filled out and was ready to go. He had me signed up for a driver education course and out of the Courthouse within the hour. My case was dismissed a year later. His advice and counsel was sound, reliable and hopeful. He is smart and knows exactly what he is doing.

After speaking with many lawyers in Connecticut for a year I always came away with the feeling that without $10,000 up front I would never have representation for my divorce. They also didn't seem to understand the issues. Enter Attorney Peter Berdon! The first time I spoke with Peter he immediately understood the underlying issues and was very thoughtful with answering my questions, (I had a lot of them!) he also advised me on new issues that he alone recognized and always made me feel respected during the process. Peter laid out an itemized list of what would happen at court and the cost of each item. This was wonderful as I could plan what would be coming up next. He also agreed to a payment plan. He was completely honest and transparent, which I appreciate immensely! In the end, I didn't have 2 days of court trial and instead Peter orchestrated a great settlement which I could never have done without him! This of course relieved me of any anxiety about my future. I believe my Guardian Angel sent Peter to me at just the right time. I highly recommend Attorney Peter Berdon at the law office of Berdon, Young & Margolis.

I needed to have someone look at a contract I drafted up to make sure the terms specified were fair and understandable to both parties. After reviewing the the document and going over it line by line, amending it where needed, I was left with a contract I felt comfortable signing. The whole process was quick and painless, would highly recommend Kent Miller for document review.

Denise agreed to represent me but handed my case off to her assistant Adam Laben. He has been rude and neglectful. He has hurt my case more than helped. He did not subpoena my witnesses after multiple conversations asking him too. I have asked numerous times to speak with Denise and Adam call, text and email but refuses to let me talk to her. They have used all of the money I gave them and drawn out a case that should have ended months ago. My children are the ones who are suffering the most from not getting proper representation and goes into court not even know the case details I clearly discussed with him more than once and brought court documents for evidence.

Overall rating is merely average, with no lasting impressive litigation or art of deal making skills. I originally sought Attorney Storm out as he was geographically separated from my social circle (and that of my spouse) and reviews available online indicated he was “aggressive” and had dealt favorable endings for male clients with children. Unfortunately, it seemed he had a cynical view of his clients and make no mistake, his legal methodology is to settle cases (instead of pursuing a trial result) with a desire to land in a “zone of reasonableness” - which will likely not be in the client’s best interest. Only when opposing counsel took aggressive actions and motions did I see some desire and potential skill to litigate. Nonetheless, this was short lived. He also has some uncanny obsession with telling you to change your “way of thinking” on certain matters including client proposals or requests. He is keen on using a third party for parenting plan consensus instead of going to the court family relations branch or negotiating with opposing counsel himself. While this may (or may not) accelerate things, it comes at a steep price and adds another variable to the separation process. Prior to the final disposition, I also must note that I did clearly ask to be sent a final copy (understanding it would uncertified) of the agreement and stipulation documents and when all was said and done, I got nothing beyond “You are divorced” in an email (with no attachments or follow up). Pros- he is largely responsive (returns calls and e-mails quick enough but doesn’t always hit every point). He has a very nice office and his paralegal is very polite, professional and responsive. He seems familiar with Hartford Family court personnel and procedures. Cons- encourages clients to be “flexible” - but around his own schedule first and foremost of course. His rate at $400/hr is no bargain and he doesn’t have much sympathy for the financial state of his clients. Only when the case was all but finalized, he made a final concession on a pay now discount of sorts. His estimate on an initial retainer will likely only take you 6 months in with no disposition guarantee- and by his own admission, a simple divorce takes closer to a year.

I can say in the beginning he was very knowledgeable seemed like he wanted to help protect me and my special needs child. Towards the end just seems like he did not care anymore he knew exactly what was happening, the fact that my supposed victim I threatened me and my child, was a known drug dealer, known to be married and frauding the government, proven to lie directly to a judge.the fact that she was I was told this is not substantial to my case. But then was told by several different attorneys it should have been included. The fact that he said I shouldn't have been arrested but did nothing about it as he was not at my arraignment. Seems when I got another attorney to ask him questions everything kind of went sideways as I was being told by Mr young one thing and being proven by different attorneys that was not the case. I spent my life savings trying to protect my special needs child that Mr Young knew was in very realistic possible danger period yeah he did nothing to prove my innocence just question me as if I was the bad guy never directly answering questions

I was arrested in retaliation of filing ethics complaints exposing embezzlement in the Stamford Government. I hired Devin Janosov when my first 2 Attys acted with malice to hide a video I had from day 1 proving my innocence and refused to obtain or compel exculpatory discovery that proves my defense. . My first 3 Attys hide video evidence proving my innocence and acted with malice to get me committed into the mental ward in violation of court law criminal procedures " Title 54 "allows someone deemed incompetent to be a volunteer in an out patient program. My first 2 attorneys allowed the judge to conceal exculpatory video to hurt my defense and commit me to the mental ward illegally. Atty Janosov concealed my videos evidence (from the court) proving my defense to help the SA cause me great harm. Atty Janosov and my 2 former attorneys all acted with malice to hide my rights to receive a "Nolle Prosequi" as the court rules to have my charges dismiss as the law of the court provides sec: 54-56 2 (A) "the court shall approve a "nolle prosequi" that dismisses the charges with out the courts approval. This is an automatic dismissal of the charges as per the rule. The court does not have the right to deny it. Atty Devin Janosov never received any exculpatory evidence because he allowed the SA to conceal all evidence to support my defense the whole time he defended me (1 year) . He refused to file motion to compel discovery for 1 year. Atty Janosov never represented any of the 6 motions we filed to cause me great harm and he allow the SA to conceal all exculpatory evidence including the list of witness the SA intended to call in their prosecution the whole times he represented me for 2 years and 1 month. Janosov never took action to make the State identify the witnesses I had on my video proving my innocence for over 1 year. Janosov concealed a video with SPD Police Captain validating my innocence on video for over 1 years to hinder my defense and cause me great harm. Atty Janosov received some discovery in Sept 2021 and he refused to let me review it even though I paid him to obtain it for me. Atty Devin Janosov never told me I could use my house for collateral to avoid shelling out $30k in out of pocket bail fees. He took my money to defend me against criminal charges fabricated against me. Stamford police got caught on video when they fabricated false arrests on me to hide my complaints exposing embezzlement and misconduct of the Board of Ethics / Stamford government. Atty Janosov never represented a motion for me or told the judge I had a video proving my defense for over 2 years while allowing the courts to conceal evidence I needed to support my defense. Atty Janosov asked the judge to be withdrawn from my case and the judge let Atty Janosov keep $3.750 from me with out ever doing anything to help me for over 2 years. Devin Janosov breach his contract to represent me, represent motions for me and compel discovery, but he keep all my money with the help of the judge. Devin Janosov never filed for a " nolle prosequi " as per court law title 54 sec: 2A) My right to dismiss all charges because I completed the competency program as a patient committed into the mental ward (in violation of title 54 procedures (the lawyers and court violated my rights under title 54 to be an outpatient as a volunteer to gain competence). I would not recommend this lawyer. SM

When I was embarking on a divorce, I found myself in a challenging legal situation, feeling alone and residing in a country far away from my family. After two years of stagnant progress with my previous lawyer, I knew I needed a different approach. My lawyer recommended Jill Blomberg, and that decision turned out to be a game-changer. From the outset, Jill's strategy was brilliant. Switching to Jill's team marked a turning point in my case. She didn't hesitate to take charge, steering us away from a settlement path that wasn't working. Jill, along with Molly and Rachel, took immediate action when we filed. She refused to play the opposing lawyer's game and asserted control, effecting change within months. While she made some decisions that I didn't like at the time, I always ended up learning that it was the right decision. It's obviously her world and she knows what she's doing. I can't help but think that having her from the beginning would have expedited the process. The significance of trust in your lawyer cannot be overstated, and Jill's team consistently earned mine. Their coordination was impeccable, responding promptly even on weekends, and the balance between Jill's assertiveness and Molly's calmness was effective. When she walked in the court she just had this confidence and presence. When my ex saw her, he hated it which made me love it even more. She taught him a lesson for sure. It was clear she even had solid relationships with the other lawyers and court clerks, showcasing her stellar reputation at all levels. I even received a compliment one day when walking to my car from a random lawyer letting me know that I had an incredible lawyer, providing an additional level of reassurance. In hindsight, I would have chosen Jill from the start. Her team's expertise, coordination, and ability to instill confidence are unmatched. Going through a legal ordeal is never easy and while I know they were all doing their job, I felt that I had acquired a temporary family and what sometimes felt like a therapist who stood by me every step of the way.

My decision to hire Jill was absolutely the best decision I made in the divorce process. She is a warrior when the situation requires it, but she's also extremely empathetic - I never anticipated having that level of trust with a lawyer. Jill was a true partner throughout the process, and an incredible advocate for me from start to finish. I will be forever grateful to her and her team for their guidance, dedication, and compassion.

"Upon my friend's recommendation, I reached out to Jill and her team, and from the moment I met with her and Molly, I knew I was in capable hands. Their confidence and insightful questions immediately put me at ease, making me feel incredibly safe and supported. It was like being surrounded by a circle of strong, smart women who were ready to protect and guide me through the challenges ahead. Despite my initial hopes for an amicable resolution, I soon realized the gravity of my situation with my abusive husband. Jill and Molly's unwavering dedication to my case became my lifeline. They treated me as their number one priority, providing both legal expertise and emotional support. Molly's unparalleled recall of every detail, coupled with her extraordinary ability to swiftly locate and source documents and correspondence, was truly remarkable. She is a total powerhouse and together they’re a force to be reckoned with. Rachel's kindness added a comforting touch to the team dynamic, making me feel truly cared for during a difficult time. During the legal proceedings, Jill's brilliance shone through, particularly during the cross-examination of my husband. As I navigated the complexities of divorce, Jill and her team became more than just legal representatives; they became my trusted allies and confidants. With their support, I found the strength to stand up for myself and face the challenges head-on. Getting a divorce is not on anyone's top ten list of things to do, but I felt like no matter what happened, I was going to be okay because they had my back and I could trust that they were going to do everything they could for me.” - Christina, Former Client

With that in mind she was able to sort through the five years of ongoing litigation, and strategically re-focus case to where my goals could be achieved. Her on going advice and attention to not only my case, but also my feelings around it, have helped me re-shape my actions, and thinking around the case to the point where my goals are bearing tangable fruit. I had a very difficult international family law matter concerning child custody, case jurisdiction and the UCCJEA. The situation was adverse. Stakes were high. Notwithstanding, Campbell Barrett and his team pulled the proverbial rabbit out of the hat and did a stellar job for me and my children who would otherwise been relegated to a bleak future. As a family law attorney, Campbell Barrett of Pullman and Comley is worth his weight in gold ... or even platinum for that matter! My boys and I have him to thank along with his team members Johanna Katz and Stacy for saving their future. When the going gets tough Pullman and Comley get going and do the job done as none other.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
