No reason to fear this place they drag out chump change cases and have newbies and interns do all the work. Big companies spend more money in litigation than they would have if they settled. Stay away!!!

Definitely would not recommend for hire… they purposely dragged out our case. The Plaintiff was more than willing to settle for way less than they was in the beginning but the attorney never said a word. No calls, communication and very unprofessional. Wish we saw these reviews beforehand.

Contrary to the two reviews I have read on this site Mrs. Forwood has been there in every step of my case. I believe she has the knowledge and compassion that is required in such legal cases as my own. Mrs. Forwood is a constant guardian in my definition and a great lawyer, and I would recommend her to anybody I know that needs such representation. Her tenacity and presence in court is unparalleled by anyone's standards and believes in the right thing for the case. Even if it is not in favor of what "the client wants" it will be the right thing to do. This I trust, and am willing to say it with confidence and conviction. In a nutshell, I am more than pleased with the services rendered thus far in an ongoing case and am pleased to have been referred to Mrs. Forwood by a very well known practice in the athens area.

Was not available once to assist me with details of my case, despite repeated attempts to contact. Saw her the first day (when I paid my upfront fee) and the last day (after I negotiated my own settlement with no legal input). Seemed knowledgeable, but provided little to no service.

I was not happy with my experience with Ms. Forwood. I increasingly felt less confident that she was a strong advocate, efficient, and effective. Her lack of knowledge is apparent, and she drags on her case in order to increase the cost of her services. I felt that she presented options for me that were detrimental. Additionally, I thought she treated the paralegal poorly, talked behind the paralegal's back. She doesn't realize that she is a fool, and appeared that way in front of the judge and the opposing council. Choosing her was an embarrassment. She is simply a failure at her work.

Boyfriend was ASSAULTED by police officers during his incarceration, and this bottom of the barrel scum bag REFUSED to even hear the details of the case. If you are looking for lawyers who will do the right thing, stay far away from this guy. I won't rate him lower than one star, if that were possible, but sadly...that is a pipe dream. This guy deserves to be disbarred, and NEVER practice law EVER again.

In April 2016 I hired Attorney Stokes to assist in getting parole for my fiance. At the the time I hired him I presented all the court paperwork showing my fiance was convicted of armed robbery. Attorney Stokes stated it was a process and he could possibly be home for the holidays, except armed robbery is not eligible for parole, ever! Further, with the exception of one time and by his assistant about a week after hiring him, I did not receive one return phone call, only a copy of the letter from the parole board saying that armed robbery was not eligible for parole with a brief letter from Attorney Stokes that basically said, "here is the parole board's response..." I wish he's been honest at thr the beginning and told me that armed robbery was not eligible for parole and not that it was a process. I worked very hard for the legal fees paid to Attorney Stokes, very disappointed in his "parole specialty" practice, (his exact words).

I wish I had seen the other reviews before I hired this lady. I can agree to each one of this review. I was referred to her by a close friend so I was excited to work with her as I had heard good things about her. She does not fight for her clients at all, she doesn't not listen and as a result is unable to communicate effectively. Just like others the defiant in my case walked away smiling. My final divorce deed is garbage . DO NOT USE HER !

I hired Ms. Mcleod in 2019 to handle my Legitimation & Child visitation case, I provide a lot of evidence that my children's mother was not being fair at all. I made her aware that covid had affected my income and that we needed to reevaluate my income statement. She didn't do anything when we got to court. She barely barely made to court on time period because she lost track of her court dates, the court was held up for about thirty minute before she finally arrived. She allowed witnesses to testify against me that never met me before in life, without objected or questioning the validity of what was being said or presented. She didn't bring up the fact that my income went down, she didn't do a good job cross examining my me or my children's mother. Sho allowed false evidence to be admitted against me me, she basically sat and just stared at me as the lied on me. She didn't do any homework on my children's mom like the opposing attorney didn't on me. The case was rushed, we should have rescheduled the case for another date. The case was ran through, now I can no longer see my children because she mishandled my case. After court she ran to her car and never spoken to me again, or offered anytype of remedy to my negative situation. She could have advise me that I only had thirty days to appeal, witch I didn't know until it was too late. Now my child support if way more than i can pay and I am not allowed to visit with my daughter because of the blatant lies my child mom told that my attorney didn't even contest. I am stressed and hurt. I have exhausted all my funds and don't know what to do. She to this day 12/4/2020 never contacted me again.

Ironically, Maureen came recommended to me from a friend who was previously in a divorce proceeding and Maureen was hired by her ex-husband. My friend said, "Don't use my attorney, use the one my ex-husband hired as she was more effective." In my case, Maureen was able to quickly eliminate unreasonable positions presented by opposing counsel to get negotiations back to a reasonable level which allowed both sides to more quickly reach an agreement. While there is no such thing a good divorce, I believe Maureen saved both sides a lot of legal fees by helping us to focus on the real issues. I have referred her to two other individuals since then and will continue to do so!

I do not recommend this lawyer for I-601 waiver cases. Do not go to him for this. The ratings I gave were solely based on our experience with his knowledge with the I-601 waiver. Otherwise he is a good lawyer in everything leading up to the actual waiver. You could probably use him for anything his office offers and get a good outcome. We have in the past. However I strongly discourage you to hire him for the I-601 he is not up to date with what USCIS is wanting to see in the waivers. His staff is amazing I can say, really helpful and supportive.

He sat on damning discovery, which he could have used to settle, evidence my wife was cheating when she filed petition for divorce. He never petitioned the court to hear temporary alimony petition, even though this was the specific task I hired him to do. Instead he asked for meaningless discovery and wasted my finite resources. When all my money was exhausted, he quit leaving me facing a motion for contempt having no representation. The first thing he will request is affidavit of your finances to determine how much money he can get from you, when the money is gone he will quit. Don't sign anything! His wife is his secretary. I wonder why?

I begged him to file a petition for support, but in 9 months he didn't. When I finally got a hearing, because the other lawyer filed a motion for contempt, Lyndon was unprepared and just sat outside with Plaintiff's counsel trying to settle in the hallway until I caught him working against my interest. Lyndon tried to waive my right to a jury trail and when I wrote him saying I specifically asked him not to do so, he withdrew as my attorney leaving high and dry. He might as well have been working for the Plaintiff. He cannot be trusted.

I contacted the Attorney Generals Office to register a complaint of Fraud. I did so on line. They told me it would be a fee of $5.00 for filing, so I used a credit card. But before I could be connected to an attorney they wanted me to agree to an automatic withdrawal of $60.00 a month until I cancelled. This is another form of extortion especially since the Attorney General is paid by tax payers. Do not consumers have any protection by our government without them trying to extort funds from taxpayers?

I hired John Russell to help in a life estate which he assured me he was experienced. The plan was to simply deed the property to the opposing side thus breaking the life estate. However, unknowingly to me at the time John Russell was sitting in AA meetings with the opposition. John Russell did not return phone or email messages for two weeks prior. Make a long story short John Russell did not do his Due dilligence in representing me and my Wife thus costing us thousands of dollars and a guilty verdict on contempt. *Do not hire this person*

My son has an open case in Savannah and it has been open for almost 2 years. This man was supposed to be his lawyer who never ever tried to contact us let us know anything. The only thing he answers is text messages and it's always the same rhetorical, textbook answers. He would always apologize for the delay even though that is a very big delay of almost 2 years. Mind you my son had never been in trouble before and my son has an intellectual disability .I spoke with the district attorney they told me that my son's lawyer needed to shake things up a little bit so we can get this going I relate the message and this man's response is "don't contact me again". He should have removed himself from the case a long time ago and if I had known what type of man he was and what type of attitude he had or realized it a little earlier than I would have been fired him. I think he just didn't care because we are out of state and to be honest I think he dragging his feet because my son is of color. I have plans for this lawyer because he did not fulfill his obligations. If you want someone who's not going to drag their feet, or if you want someone who is going to work with you and not against you I would suggest you hire someone else.

He represented me in a Federal case some years ago. When we first contacted him, he gave the assurance he knew the Attorney for the Northern district of Georgia and he would work out a suitable plea deal, Well that never happened, especially after he was paid his fee. He could not even put up a reasonable case for a bail in a case of fraud for an amount less than $120k. while locked up, he never moved a finger to appeal the refusal of bail, he would not also take calls and didn't have an assistant to take messages regarding critical information. During the address stage his presentation was poor, lacked any persuasive strength, weak and he was almost pathetically inarticulate. I ended pleading my own case for a reduction in sentencing. Will never recommend this Attorney for any serious case.

This Judge is just as bad as her Chief Judge Gladville. After the refusal of Gladville and two others she was placed on the bench. I understand she works for the State as well, but at the end of the day those guys(YSL YOUNG THUG) are on trial and fighting for their lives and haven't been given a fair trial since it began two years ago. They have been lied on, sitting in jail for 2 plus years, denied bonds, secret meetings behind their back and more. This is so unjust and heartbreaking to even watch and I don't have a dog in the fight so I can only image their heartbreak along with their love ones. These judges need to be disbarred if they are going to be unjust. This trial should have been over but the judges in Fulton County are horrible and make those that are fair look just as back. My heart is filled with so much hurt to just see the unjust these young men are getting. I have sons and I would be sitting at the supreme court doors trying to get justice for mine. This Judge needs to be removed and bar card needs to be gone away so they see how it feels to try people unfair because you think you can.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
