I would give her zero stars but had to give 1. She is 1 sided and cares only about money. She is not about what is best for the children. We had her from 2018 to 2024. She came to our home 1 time and met with her twice. Was supposed to have a phone appointment with her but she never called us at the scheduled time. We Called her office and her assistant said Mrs. Erin tried to call us, which we had the phone in hand and we had no missed voicemail. So she lies and she lies in court. Her billing is a joke so make sure to check your billing! SHE NEVER returns your calls and can never talk to her only her assistant. It's been hell having her. So if you are appointed her for your GAL ask for a new one asap!! She destroys family's and cares more about the money instead of the best interest of the children. Aweful experience with her.

I normally don't this but this lady was out of line and pure rude. I called and barely got a sentence out, and she immediately cut me off and threw out another attorney’s name and number and rudely got off the phone. It's too bad she didn't know who she was on the phone with. I was also looking for some other business too but hey I will gladly give another office my money. If you make it past the initial phone call best of luck. Because if she is a reflection of that office, I think I dodged a bullet. Good day!

If you are looking for a civil rights attorney, especially if you are looking to sue the City of Chicago, Chicago Police Department, then this is the man to have on your side. He handled my case against the Chicago Police expeditiously & professionally. He has successfully litigated class action suits against Cook County Jail. He is not itimidated by the Chicago Police. Their dirty practices must be stopped & they need to be brought to task and this is the man to do just that. I highly recommend Kenneth Flaxman! I am posting anonymously for fear of harrassment from the Chicago Police.

Did not listen to anything that I had to say. Felt that he knew best. He never returned my calls. He did not keep my informed of issues regarding my case. He entered orders spending money in the escrow account that was held at his office without my authorization. I have had to spend over $5,000 in attorney fees with a new Family Law Attorney to fix the mess that he created. Did not care about the safety of my children. I explained the situation to him about an alcohol issue and was told that I was not to bring any of this up or I could loose my Sons due to Parent Alienation Syndrome.

I hired Matt for a case in 2014. I was charged with a numerous amount of traffic tickets and posession of drug paraphernalia(a cannabis pipe) He was able to get all of the traffic tickets dismissed and I paid a fine for the paraphernalia. Matt wanted to attempt to file a motion to suppress the paraphernalia, but I wanted to keep my drivers license so I just agreed to have the tickets dismissed and pay the fine. He only charged me $250.00 to represent me. Matt is educated and always looks out for the best interest for his clients.

This law firm is all about how they can get money from someone. There isn't no free legal advice here. They will trade files or take other lawyers money if the money is right. Look you straight in the face throw your case and lie in your face before you even step into a courtroom. They already talked to the other attorney got money or a file that puts money into their pockets. Give you some line why they can't help you or low-key snitch on themselves telling you they talked to the other lawyer. Make you agree to something you shouldn't. See I'm educated on how lawyers are greedy and dirty. Known top lawyers most of my life. So I know all lawyers dirty tricks. This law firm needs everyone lawyer there fired and have new lawyers that care to really help or just shut it down 👎 for good. Everyone there has nasty attitudes. Be careful laying in bed with snakes.

I read the other review and nothing could be further from the truth about Mr. Moran. I had cancer, PTSD and he was great. Likely the most patient attorney I’ve had. Knowledgeable and fair. No offense but the ARDC is not exactly a fair organization - and I’m not talking about doing their job - I’m talking about everything else. Next, it is his job to get along with the ARDC attorneys - that helps his client. One would think a lawyer would understand that because they have actually engaged in the practice of law. And if you are looped up on drugs, you should not be practicing law. Perhaps Mr. Moran was keeping you from being charged further? Again, theses cases are difficult - but I found Bill to be an honest, ethical, kind and competent attorney who will advocate for you.

There is absolutely no attorney worse than Bill Moran. He is condescending, arrogant and will absolutely throw a client under the proverbial bus. After having several unnecessary and painful orthopedic surgeries, I experienced a lot of difficulty practicing law. Moran refused to allow me to bring up my surgeries as a reason (not an excuse) why I was over-medicated on pain killers and anxiety drugs. Moran erroneously told me that my legal accomplishments prior to the surgeries were irrelevant. Moran allowed a paranoid schizophrenic to testify against me without arguing that the witnesses perception of reality were flawed and not reliable. Moran conceded that a mental health diagnosis could be made by attorneys (as opposed to doctors). Moran told me that my mental health records should be allowed on the Internet indefinitely because the public needed to be protected against me. When I was diagnosed with cancer, doctors found those mental health records to refuse care to me. I suffered only from depression. Moran seemed to be prejudiced against people with depression. When I was in Chicago for a review hearing, he ignored me and my questions and opted instead to have lunch with his friends at the ARDC. Please. Find another attorney if you have attorney disciplinary problems. This man is ill equipped or motivated to help you.

I recently hired David for a custody case that I'm currently going through. All I can say is "WOW". Beyond Davids knowledge on custody laws, he is very aggressive and tactical. I hired David for a time sensitive matter, and he got us a court date just days later. I'm extremely happy with the work he is doing! 10/10 recommend!

He will drop you in a second and does not represent you appropriately or in good faith. I have personally witnessed the entire proceeding with a person any normal attorney (Basic not even good - would definitely do for a single mom and a husband who doesn’t want to support the child. Beyond incompetent and will drain off a retainer and give bad advice not follow through and essentially cause nothing but damage.)

David was negligent in my military divorce case. He failed to progress the matter, after over a year of him and his firm, no progress was made. He sent things to the other party without notifying or consulting me yet was unresponsive for months to my calls and emails.

Basically, Jed Stone is an excellent trial lawyer. If you want to try a case go with Jed Stone. He is not afraid. And will make the state work. But you have to be actively engaged in your case. Read the police reports and help him by pointing out errors. You never know which one is significant. If you don't intend on going to trial..then still pick Jed. The fact that he always goes to trial increases your chances of a better plea deal. However, Jed is the guy you take to a fist fight not words...he hits hard until blood comes out...he doesn't hold back. Most people don't understand his "art of presenting and preserving the record" helps you even if you loose at trial. Almost all the cases he went to trial on and lost have been reversed on appeal. The state is no match for Jed. Most of the time the state simply settles. Jed took my case all the way to trial. Initially we lost but on appeal he made a good record which resulted in my case being overturned completely. Always share your thoughts about your case when you see him. Review the discovery (evidence) yourself point to him what is not right no matter how small. Send him out the their with correct information and watch the fight go down..win or loose..when it comes to trial he's a beast.

I hired Jed Stone to prepare an appeal to my wrongful conviction case. He took full payment upfront, promised me that he would get it done. Then I never heard back from him for months, I followed up every couple of months for 4 years. Every time, Jed gave me a runaround excuse that he was too busy in court, that he would get to it as soon as possible. Then he asked his assistant to inquire with an organization regarding evidences from my case, the assistant disclosed my name and information to this organization without my knowledge or consent. They contacted the federal agents to investigate me as the result of this exchange. Not only did Jed Stone do nothing on my case, he caused me even more legal issues. He acted as if he is sympathetic to me and my wrongful convictions, in reality he could not care less about me or my constitutional rights. He was clearly aware that his action could cause me legal issues, and put my safety at risk. Someone like him should not be allowed to practice law. Misconduct aside, the way he practices business is truly unprofessional; there is no other professional services that can get away with taking clients' money and not fulfilling their end of the contract. I requested a refund after his misconduct and no-result, and I never got a response from him. I would not recommend anyone to consult or hire Stone, he lacks the basic human decency to be dealing with human's life.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
