If I could leave negative stars I would! Called hoping to have a consultation with this attorney and instead was sent to his assistant who wouldn't even listen and was telling me I had to hire the attorney first before getting the attorney's plan or before the attorney would tell me what they could or would do with my case. I have no idea if this attorney is any good or not because I wasn't even able to get past his rude and snotty assistant!!! Didn't want any info on what happened wanted money up front. Unreal

Don’t waste your time they are only out for a quick buck and don’t really care about getting your case through to the end in your favor. My disability got denied but the whole report was full of half truths and lies wasn’t anything accurate at all . So naturally I want an appeal. They said they don’t go that far in the process. Well what good are ya if you don’t go to the very end and exhaust all resources. Now I have a bogus case full of social security workers lieing and I have to go find someone to pick it up and re-explain the whole thing to them. Totally unprofessional. I think if your working a case for some one and they get shafted and it’s chalked full of lies then it your responsibility to make sure that stuff is asked about and solved

Jase prepared wills & trusts for my wife and I. He was professional and engaging. He also provided some keen insights which we implemented but would not have had the foresight to cover on our own. Jase also charges a very reasonable fee. For all the reasons above, I have referred a number of people to him.

I hired Jase for a Real Estate transaction. Not only was he super helpful and easy to work with, his staff was very helpful as well. From start to finish he walked me through the process of buying my first home. The documents were put together and explained to me using language that I could understand. I was super impressed with the way he handles business. 10 out of 10 would work with again! Thank you for making my life super easy during what should have been a stressful time in my life.

She was quick to make a plan and put my mind at ease, then didn't follow through with any of it. She missed court deadlines that resulted in limited options. She neglected to provide me with very important information relevant to my case; things which would have influenced my decisions. This mistakes were expensive and have caused great hardship. I do believe she had good intentions but when she was needed, she realized the mistakes she had made and went completely MIA. If you want the peace of mind that your attorney is doing everything possible to represent you, I would highly recommend rolling the dice with a different attorney. This attorney is still very much a novice in the field with much to learn about the law as well as people.

Ms. Vellinga represented my family member in a very sensitive, complex legal matter and always displayed the highest level of integrity and professionalism. She was dedicated to the case and doggedly pursued even the small details of the case that ended up making a big impact in the outcome. My family and I could not be happier with her services. I also greatly enjoyed working with her and the law firm. All were very friendly and most helpful navigating a very complicated legal system.

Difficult to rate. Ended up giving 1 star. Would give a 5 star if based solely on the work actually done. But a 1 due to the following: The work he performed was well done and he accomplished what we needed until now when his license was suspended for 30 days. After looking into this, it appears he's been reprimanded previously. Communication is atrocious. Doesn't return calls or emails. Late filings. He was reprimanded on our case for not filing on time. Have not received any type of bill or itemization stating what he utilized our retainer for and then asked for more.

Not sure if it was a stretch to say his client was in fear of his life because of the George Floyd incident. That defense seems more like banking in on a tragedy that occurred to a black man who was killed by negligence when the crime was petty. His client had a warrant, knew he was going to be extradited to another state and did not want to go plan and simple. He pushed the driver out of the car and drove with an officer on the hood and ended up breaking his back. I have no doubt being black and being approached by a white officer may be intimidating but you can’t cry George Floyd like wolf any time a black person is approached by an white officer. Based on that logic as part of his defense I have questions of his competence as an attorney and his judgment and logic.

Krisanne Weimer used to work for Legal Shield here in West Des Moines. Iowa. She does not even know how to work with Iowa Department of Human Services to help defend us and made us end up looking for another attorney to take her place. I am very impressed by how quickly Eric and his team were able to review all of the documents and information regarding my situation (I must add that my situation is very complex and unique) and within days he was on the same page as I completely understood the issues. Within a week Eric took action in my case and has been fighting in my defense ever since. Eric is on top of things, responds in a timely manner, is always very professional, his staff is always friendly when interacting with me, and most importantly he has remained loyal to me. It is hard to find a lawyer that works for you and stays loyal to you. I have hired several different lawyers for my situation and either they want to take the easy way out by taking shortcuts, or they would to talk me into doing things I don't want to do, or doing things I didn't know about just to avoid the extra energy it took to satisfy my wishes during my case and Eric is the first attorney out of them all that I am completely satisfied with. So satisfied that I hired him for another case that I am currently dealing with, he is currently working on 3 cases of mine and I couldn't be more relieved. Eric is very intelligent, and firm when handling matters involving my cases. Eric respects my requests and is always honest and direct when providing me with answers or information regarding my case. Eric's services are not cheap, but it's money well spent and well deserved. Once hired, Eric completed more progress on my case in less than a week, than any other attorney has the entire time (almost a year).

I hired Christopher Farwell for my divorce and 1 year later I clearly see how much I got screwed. Christopher is extremely overpriced for his services. I payed $8,000+ to get a divorce decree where my ex got everything he wanted. I just want to mention my ex self represented himself and payed nothing since he didn't hire a lawyer. Also, my ex is not a US citizen. If someone from another country that has no knowledge of US laws and used google for legal advice can do a better job than a lawyer there is clearly something wrong. I can't even sleep at night one year later thinking about how Chris Farwell took thousands and thousands of dollars of my money, but did nothing for me. My ex and I got divorced with a child involved. My ex gets the dependency exemption for taxes every year, which I now know is extremely rare and uncommon; I somehow lost this battle in the divorce. My ex got an extreme amount of visitation that he argued about until he got his way ( 1 year later he doesn't even use this visitation at all). Like I said earlier my ex is not a US citizen.... Chris Farwell somehow couldn't even stop the judge from deciding that my child could leave the U.S. with my ex after my ex threatened me he was going to leave the country with my child and that we wouldn't see each other ever again. Also, I learned Chris Farwell is one of the most expensive lawyers in the area. If I could give advice I would say please don't let happen to you what happened to me. Chris Farwell is lazy and doesn't put as much effort into a case for the price he charges. He charges $200 an hour and I wouldn't even pay $10 an hour for the service that I got. There were tons of red flags during the whole process, but I was emotional from getting divorced that I overlooked them because I was scared. I highly regret not switching lawyers in the middle of this process. 1 year later I am still struggling with dealing with my ex. My ex and I jointly own a property together and Chris took my exes word that my ex couldn't get the house refinanced into his own name (which was a lie). The agreement in the divorce was that the house be sold. Now 1 year later my ex doesn't have the house for sale anymore and is renting out the house making a profit off the house while it is still in my name! I've told my ex for months that his 1 year is over and my name needs to be off the house and my ex refuses to refinance the house in his own name. I even took the extra step and found a bank that will most likely refinance the house loan in only my exes name with a lower interest rate! My ex still won't get the house in only his name!!! 1 year later I am now set up by Chris Farwell to go back to court to deal with all the things Chris started, but couldn't finish.

From day one it seemed like all this attorney was worried about was her compensation $$. The case that we hired her for was supposed to be a "simple" case according to her, but when the process took too long and we saw no further developments. We attempted to reach out to her only to get a negative response back. On top of that she made sure that any Text, Email, or Call we made to her was charged per minute! no matter how simple the question was or even if we wanted to know updates on the immigration case. Also, she was never prepared during our hearings in front of the immigration judge there were times that the judge would ask her for certain documents and she would come up with a reason as to why she did not have that document even though she had plenty of time to prepare. Needless to say the verdict was not in our favor and our family member was sentenced to deportation.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
