I called and told the amazing phone representative about my situation and what was going on with my boyfriend's arrest. She was patient, empathetic, understanding and helpful. She gave me a good phone number reference to call. If you all get a chance to talk to Judy (Judie) just know that she's the best and a blessing.

Erin is such a fantastic lawyer. I’ve worked with her for years over my lengthy divorce. Every step of the way she’s been on top of it all. Never a procrastinated moment, and always 3 steps ahead of the process. It really is because of her that I came out on the right side of the dirt from my divorce/custody battle, and I am forever thankful. If you are ever looking for a divorce attorney, I swear by Erin, she will make sure you are taken care of.

I worked with the team of Katie, Yomary and Sara and from the moment of the consultation I knew that these were the people for me. They were all very caring and sensitive for the difficult position that I was in, offered great advice and were incredibly patient and supportive the entire time. I doubt I could have found a better team to represent me anywhere.

Never go to court without an attorney even if you are an attorney. Mr. Slama knew from the beginning the truth of this matter and without his assistance my battle was complicated and if left to the understudy of an unlearned judge could have years of appeals to reveal the truth. Truth matters and Mr. Slama knew how to fight to the end. His experiences are what mattered.

Me and my family settled about a month ago and all I'm hearing from the paralegal is they are working on it ..I was told that after you settle that it does not take long to receive the check..now my mom said they won't even take her calls ..they are not good at communicating either.. I wish if we would have chosen Morgan and Morgan or someone else but we had no idea that they work so so slow .and the big part too is no communication at all ..they dont think we know but we know they pushed for more money anyway when we say we were ready to settle..they did want they wanted to do without our permission cause when you settle it is not suppossed to take months

I love this law firm. My ex wife hired Ms Georges and ended up giving me more child support and more time with my child than I already originally had! They took a bunch of my ex wife’s money on a case she had no chance of winning and dragged it out for 2 years to get as much of her money as they could. I personally, love these guys. But to be honest, I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone… other than my ex wife.

I’m so great full with Mr. Naughton. He didn’t give up on my case. He went far and beyond to follow trough. Every time I felt like this was a lost cost, due to it being a case where the other party lived in Another country. He was always reassuring. To him this case was a piece of cake. At my lowest point. I will never forget his words. “I will do what ever it takes to get you divorced and get what you deserve.” And I definitely did. I got everything. I can’t thank him enough! I Definitely recommend 100%

Michael is an amazing human being. He truly cares for his client and understands the sense of urgency that it takes when dealing with some of life's difficult issues. I hired him for both a divorce and as an elder care attorney. In both cases he explained to me different routes we could go, but at the same time letting me know about different consequences that could happen. I never felt uninformed but instead confident because I knew he had my back. In my elder care case dealing with protecting my family's assets, Michael again explained every step to me. He has been practicing law for 30+ years and I will continue to use Michael as needed. He is truly a great man!

I had the greatest honor of working with Mr. Robert, as the Social Investigator for my case. I had never met this admirable man before, and I will be honest, in the beginning I was in favor of a female investigator, since I am a female, and thought it would be easier, but the Judge decided to go forward and assign Mr. Robert, instead. It took 5 minutes into the conversation with him when I first met him, to truly say "what a blessing to have him assigned to our case. The judge was absolutely right to assign him!" A great attorney, an amazing Social Investigator, careful to capture all the details, truly ensuring my daughter's well being first and foremost. Above all, an extraordinary, fair, so knowledgeable human being. This is above everything else! Mrs. Woods and him make such a great team. I recommend him without a single reservation, for any social investigation needs. I am actually sad that when the case is closed, I won't be able to speak with him again in his office and learn so much from our conversations. He is the best! Choose him and only him! He is the right person! Thank you for everything Mr. Robert! J.S

I am so thankful that JALA exists. I would not have been able to fight my ex husband when he tried to do away with child support and alimony. He had stopped paying everything including my mortgage which almost put our home into foreclosure. There is no way I could pay an attorney to protect me and my children from his vindictive actions. I highly recommend them to anyone needing help.

When my divorce began, I consulted with a friend of mine who is a divorce attorney and he unequivocally said that Susannah was the best in town - he was not wrong. Susannah is the total package. She is an exceptionally smart and capable attorney as well as a skilled litigator in the courtroom. Every time we had a hearing, she was well prepared, knew the case throughly, and provided exceptional representation. She explains things well and does a fantastic job of keeping me informed. She worked hand in hand with me to reach the best end state we could in the divorce. She made recommendations but allowed me to provide the ultimate direction. She worked very efficiently to keep the costs manageable. Lastly, Susannah did a good job of managing expectations and providing counseling when it was needed, which is also part of the divorce attorney’s job. Overall, I give her my absolute highest recommendation. Furthermore, I know some of the other clients she has represented and they would all agree.

Susannah Collins is a biased “investigator”. She will bully your witnesses if she is not on your side, which shouldn’t be possible as she is supposed to be an unbiased party, she is always late and she has incredibly poor judgement. She involves herself in parts of the divorce/litigation that has nothing to do with her work as an investigator. She sided with a person who owes more than 2 years of child support, and no they did not support their children in any way during that time . Who hit the car his children were riding in out of anger. Who stalked and harassed his children, ex-wife, and her family for years. He has been arrested multiple times and this is who her “social investigation” stated as being an amazing Dad.

I employed Susannah Colins for a social investigation. Below is how it went: -Susannah was late for my initial interview with her, our home visit and every witness interview on my side. Not 5 minutes, or 10 minutes, like 20 + every time. That’s how much respect she had for me, the people willing to vouch for me, and the fact that she had been entrusted with such a job for my children. -Before she left my home she told my children they should love their dad, because a step dad would not be their REAL dad, they only have one real dad; and she shared her story of being orphaned through a car accident and how much she would’ve liked to have her dad growing up. Showing that she is unable to separate her feelings and personal experience from her work as an IMPARTIAL judge of character for the well-being of children. -She collected information but did not investigate. My ex made whatever claims he wanted and it was added to the report without investigating. He claimed to over pay child support (two years later he still has paid none), that he was not given the kids’ SS numbers so he could make a savings account for the children directly (in the process of the divorce that information was available to him), that I was mentally unstable and unable to take care of my children because I had been in a mental health facility for a month (this never happened. It is a complete lie), among other lies. Lies that could have easily been disproven, which could have lead to a report informing the judge of his comfort in lying during a legal process. -The relationship between his witnesses and my children was never shared in the report. One of my ex’s witnesses had been around him and our children maybe 5 times for a couple of hours each time, in the entire 10 years we had children. This witness’ minimal exposure to my children and him as a parent was never even mentioned in the report. The second witness my ex had was a family friend that moved out of the state of Florida about 8 years before this investigation took place. This man has never even met our youngest child which was 6 years old at the time of the investigation. This witness’ minimal exposure to my children and him as a parent was not taken into account either. His third witness was my best friend. When I shared with my friend what Susannah wrote up for her interview, my friend told me that a lot of what she said was left out, that she felt bullied during the interview, and that a lot of what she shared Susannah would call hear say and disregard. -I mentioned to her his racially insensitive comments and my concern about this for my children. A few days later my ex emailed me telling me he was not racist. I only shared this with Susannah. -At some point in this investigation I had to consider stopping the divorce process because of financial constraints. I told her about it. Days later my ex emailed me telling me he heard about me considering stopping the divorce process and if I was having a hard time, I should've reached out to him for help. I only shared this with Susannah. -Susannah completely overstepped her realm of expertise as an attorney and investigator by labeling my children as having the mental health condition of parental alienation. She is not a mental health professional. -My ex who represented himself in court (pro se) kept submitting his pleadings to Susannah. Susannah is/has been a board member of the Missing Link of Jacksonville. An organization helping people complete pro se divorce paperwork. Impartiality? -Save yourself the 5 thousand+ it costs to get a social investigation done and collect your evidence for your attorney.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
