This review is strictly to point out how this law firm handles employees. LCW is fully aware that as of March 2020 that there is a pandemic going around in the world and yet they find it completely okay with having employees who are heath compromised come into work in the Los Angeles office, although the CDC and WHO have warned against it. All other LCW offices have closed during this time but the LA office finds money to be more important that the health and safety of ALL it’s employees so only a select few are REQUIRED to come into the office, while others (including a majority of the attorneys) get to work from home. This is bad employer practice and shows just how inhuman this firm is. Further more, most schools, courts and departments that LCW works with are closed as well so what work is so important that you as an employer are willing to risk people’s health for it instead of just postponing the deadline like the rest of the world is having to do? If this is how they treat employees, I can only imagine how they treat clients.

This man is awful and his practice is unethical. He got a free 1000 from scamming my family. Didn’t even bother to look up my father’s case we literally paid him 1000 for him to see my father in person and demand more money. He did not look up his case or offer any type of consultation on how we can help my father. BEWARE of this awful unethical attorney that’s ok with scamming families out of their hard earned money.

I wish I was able to give this "lawyer" less than 1 star. He took my family's money and spent it on his mortgage or car note. I would not recommend this man for anything other than postponing your court dates and not showing up for them.

Michelle LaMar is the most knowledgeable, intuitive, upfront, ten steps ahead attorney I've met in my 48 years in business. I literally would just say "HERE ARE THE REINS, you lead the way" if I ever were to need an attorney of her caliber. I sat in with a colleague and I almost asked her for an autograph as she just oozed superstar attorney..just my opinion and she did win his case.

Terrible law firm. I contacted them about a case that involved the wrongful death of my mom. After taking all the information and acting like they cared, I never heard back from them. I called multiple times and sent several emails asking to at least let me know if they were not willing to take my case. They did NOT. No sympathy, no courtesy. What a shame! They should be embarrassed to be treating potential clients like that. FIND ANOTHER LAW FIRM.

I hired attorney Grant Joseph Savoy for family appeal and paid him $10,000. This is the result: 9/26/16 Notice sent that deadline for filing the opening brief was missed 10/12/16 Attempt to file a brief but it was rejected because it was blank 10/19/16 Appeal dismissed failure to file an opening brief. The order gives up to 30 days to request reinstatement. 11/4/16 Motion to reinstate appeal 11/8/16 Motion denied because no proposed opening brief was submitted Between July 2015 and November 2016 Mr. Grant kept telling me that there are some delays only because of California Supreme Court, but we still in a good shape and everything was going as planned. I found information about my appeal and emailed to him asking to explain, he immediately sent me termination letter.

Grant Savoy esq., is currently working close with the irs on back taxes that I have been dealing with for the past 5 years. Mr. Savory is the 3rd attorney that I have hired to handle this case. He is by far the best. He immediately picked up my phone call and made me feel completely comfortable. Mr. Savoy listened to my needs and gave me a plan of action instantly. I felt as though he really cared about fixing the problem. Not only is Mr. Savoy professional but he also makes you feel like you are a friend he has known forever. I high recommend attorney Grant Joseph Savoy and will continue to use him as my legal counsel.

Hired Mr Marks to work on criminal case for my fiance. Mr Marks bragged of his experience and stated he would work to have charges dismissed. He is nice initially to retain your service. I thought Mr Marks would work aggressively to defend my fiance but I was very disappointed with the service. Mr Marks wasn't prepared, no notes taken when I met with him twice and during the preliminary hearing offered no defense rebuttal of prosecution witnesses. In the end my fiance only got a 20 year plea for which he rejected. I hired another attorney that I'm really happy with and has already shown proven results.

Mr. Marks is a great lawyer. His fees are a bit steep but if you can afford it, you are definitely in good hands. He is very stern. No questions about that but the only thing he really cares about is his client's best interest. And he is very well connected through his years of practice. Mr. Marks defended me on a felony battery and assault charges. It sounds terrible but it was a simple bar fight that just got blown out of proportion. He was able to drop my charges down to a lesser offense and was able to teach me my lesson by allowing me to perform manual labor services for the community instead of serving five years in prison. He gives his clients his direct number which you can contact him through right away unless he is in front of a judge. He is very quick to respond and knows the law like he knows the back of his hands. I owe Mr.Marks my freedom and regardless of his fees or methods, I will be forever grateful. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND MR.MARKS TO ANYONE IN NEED OF A LEGAL COUNSEL.

He is definitely great in the beginning before getting you money but it's all down hill from there. He doesn't not personally write the documents needed for your case that need to be submitted to court. His assitants that do write these documents are terrible. He is supposed to be a good federal case lawyer but in actuality he is terrible. Communication is terrible and overall service is terrible and you definitely will get poor results because yo will be hiring his medeiocre assistants and not him. Stay away and don't put your freedom in his hands.

I hired Anthony Brown aka Tony Brown from Jeffer Mangels Butler & Mitchell LLP (JMBM). Anthony was retained specifically per the agreement to represent my deceased brother In the filing and abatement of an open appeal & restitution so that properties held by the court could be returned to Eric’s estate. None of these services were rendered, nothing was filed, and Anthony burned through the entire $10,000 retainer doing research and learning how to do abatement appeals. This was not the original agreement. Anthony could never represent the estate without initiating probate and being appointed by the court or work in tandem with the court appointed probate attorney. Anthony was well aware that probate was not established and never once suggested/recommend this was required. So Anthony could never have been able to fulfill the basics of the agreement which was to represent my deceased brother. Sadly, Anthony not suggesting and requiring this is just another fact he was not qualified to represent my deceased brother legally. Like most attorneys who decide to take on cases, Anthony was informed on all the information he needed to understand and take on the case and file the abatement of the appeal. But only after signing the agreement and collecting the full retainer amount, Anthony then went back and burned through half of it learning how appeals and abatement works on my bill. He then proceeded to let me know he didn’t want to file the abatement of the appeal which was the basis of him taking on the case. Meanwhile, the District Attorney filed. I asked Anthony if he was going to file a response and he said “it would be a waste of money”. So just watching on the sideline without any dispute or rebuttal, the District Attorney got the appeal court to close out the appeal. If Anthony Brown had told me he was going to need $10K to research an appeal, I wouldn't have hired him. But that's what happened and my recommendation is to locate another attorney to handle your appeals

Working with him has been terrible. Before paying him the actual fee he requested after the $5000 case review he returned calls. The moment he received the $25,000, all communication stopped. Matthew was asked if he review the case and previous appeals, he said yeah. After several emails and message telling him to file the case in the 5th district he file the case where he wanted to so that confirmed that he did not properly review the case. A denial was sent on behalf of my case. As I knew it would because of the lack of Matthew’s review and knowledge. An adequate case review would’ve lead to correct filings in the right district. When he finally returned the last call he made after wasting our time. He mentioned that another attorney would be reaching out. We have yet to receive anything from him or the supposed other attorney! Nothing to go off of or reach out to.Now of close to $30,000 with no results. I’m currently looking for an attorney to sue him. I got his personal info.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
