Both Mr. Alday and Mr. Johnson do a great job of answering all your legal questions in a timely manner. They actually call you themselves so you get the chance to speak to lawyers versus other offices who may use paralegals and office staff.

I received a consultation with Bobby Johnson and was impressed by his ability to break down and add context to the questions I had about workers' compensation law. Bobby too time to mention the numerous workers' compensation committees he's part of, which made it clear that he's a specialist by choice. Hearing that his office chooses not to accept certain payments because they feel that an injured person needs that money in full - when his office, like any other workers' comp office, is lawfully entitled to that money - made a great impression. Based on my consultation, I'd absolutely seek representation from Johnson and Alday.

My experience with this law firm, and Bobby Johnson in particular was very beneficial. Mr. Johnson took the time to review my questions and thoroughly answer them, giving me the caveats and pros/cons of initiating a workers compensation case. It was very clear to me based on his credentials, his 18 years of experience in workers compensation cases, and his well thought out answers that he knows this area of law very well and made me comfortable in pursuing my case. Thank you!

Extremely frustrating experience with this law office. My father passed and this firm was handling probate details. I needed to sign a couple documents and no longer live local to the office. The documents were emailed to me and I had them notarized and shipped the physical copies back. The documents were received Monday April 29th. On Monday May 6th, Terri Erickson emailed saying she sent the wrong documents and I would need to go through the process again. Ok, mistakes happen. She provided a new document for me to sign. I went to have the new document signed and she made a mistake on my name. The notary would not notarize the document. Another wasted trip. The lack of attention to details is surprising. I would highly recommend looking for a different law office. The attorney Terri works for is Leslee Hungerford.

I would highly recommend Susan Heikkila! She assisted me with an issue that related to my settled divorce. Uncooperative spouses can be very distressing especially when there is a signed divorce decree. Susan was extremely diligent and reassuring. She is very good at holding both opposing counsel and their client accountable. I'm grateful for the efforts and time she put forth to solve this issue.

Attorney Goldberg was amazing and one of the best lawyers I could ever find. He truly went beyond to help me resolve my case successfully, he did everything he could by going the extra mile to communicate with the prosecutor to get my case resolved without having a hearing. Throughout the process, he kept me updated and discussed all the steps necessary to achieve the outcome that I’d expected. I’d highly recommend Attorney Goldberg to anybody for his great work and dedication!

Mr. Goldberg was successful in my case, & in fact brought me the best possible outcome on two occasions. He is extremely knowledgeable, was thorough in his work on my cases, & is someone I have no hesitation recommending you hire. He also remained in communication with me throughout the process. He expertly instructed & prepared me, regarding whatever was in my best interests to accomplish. I appreciate his desire, & following through, to fully advocate for me as his client. If you need an attorney who will absolutely fight for your rights, hire Mr. Goldberg! I am so relieved, and am extremely fortunate to have him represent me. With much gratitude, I can say he is outstanding!!

I hired David on two different cases that other lawyers were trying to get me to plea out to. They said they couldn’t beat my cases. I talked to David and he said he couldn’t promise me anything. But he would not sell me out and he would fight for my rights all the way. And he won both cases for me and i would not be a free man now if it wasn’t for David west. Thank you again David. You are by far the best lawyer I ever hired. And if I ever need a high powered attorney again I sure hope you are available. Best attorney around.

David West and associates, I can't thank you enough for the professionalism, your supreme knowledge of the law and representation in my case. You not only fought for my truth to be heard, you fought for my life and all that I would have lost! Though it may have seemed like you were unreachable, un attainable and didn't give much feed back,....you have demonstrated that not only you were more attentive to cases you represent while in action but also help your clients strengthen their "walk by faith and not by sight" approach to how you operate. You are truly a DAVID to your clients Goliaths, a SHEPHERD to sheep's who has wolves looking to devour their lives, and a person who shows how the WEST was won through your performance in a court room! My family will be forever grateful for your services and I will always recommend you to anyone in need. May God continue to bless you in your feild of work and your family and staff members. Bo

First and foremost I would like to thank Frye Law Group for accepting me as a client. Secondly, I would like to thank Michael for representing me. It was short notice but he made sure that he was more than prepared. He understood what mattered to me most and was able to execute without hesitation and got my case dismissed. I may be quiet but I knew in this situation I would have to stand up for myself. I’m just glad I didn’t have to face this alone. Now I can get back to being the best dad that I know that I am. Thank you again. I will definitely be recommending Frye Law Group to anyone in need.

I will leave this review to those that want the honest truth and unfortunately, I need to leave this review vague enough so that her office doesn’t try and discredit my comments (I would challenge you to look at her responses to other negative reviews…some are obviously warranted) I don’t play. Several years ago, I was going through the most challenging time of my young adult life. I had made some mistakes years prior and unfortunately found myself in a predicament, which lead me to an admission of guilt to my misdemeanor charge…per my council (Ms. Frye directly) I accepted a deal that was inaccurately presented to me in court. While dealing with the aftermath of my case, it was brought to my attention that Ms. Frye had given me an inaccurate and false narrative of my obligations to the court. I can’t go into extreme detail, but I can tell you, I have more than enough evidence of malpractice. I do not and will not take this lightly. As a working class medical professional, anyone that wants to partner with Ms. Frye I would recommend you head my warning. I have a case worker overlooking my complaint to the Georgia board. As a criminal defense attorney, Ms. Frye does not want these facts to become public, but unfortunately this is the direction she would like to move forward with. She is unwilling to admit to the mistakes she made to the court (and myself), which the court has graciously provided me and my current attorneys (several years later, after the incident) with enough proof and evidence of said malpractice. There are so many attorneys out there. This one will overcharge you and make it feel normal…and in my case, give you the worst outcome possible (with sprinkles of nasty, disrespectful and condescending attitude) while verbally giving you the wrong outcome of your case after the trial. I can’t make this up. I know I sound like someone recently hurt by the outcome of my case…that is incorrect. I advise any and everyone to challenge any potential attorney that you might be interested in to ask adequate questions and understand the realm of possibilities regarding your case. This was one of the worst mistakes I’ve made in my entire life, and I have really been struggling with it for years. I would not recommend Ms. Frye to my worst enemy.

I read the reviews section and I have a problem with the negative reviews. Firstly, I am a retired federal LEO having served for 23 years. Secondly, having been a LEO I have no love for defense counsels but it comes with the territory. Lastly, I have no dog in the fight as I've never met or retained Ms Merchant. With that being said, if you have a low opinion of Ms Merchant provide facts supporting your opinion. Mere words are not facts. Opinions and beliefs are not facts. Opinions and beliefs change. Facts don't. Simply making a statement does not make the statement true. I've been in court countless times as both a witness and gallery observer. I've also watched Ms Merchant in court, Re: Fani Willis. I've observed numerous prosecutors and defense counsels in action from 1975 to the present and, truth be told, Ms Merchant is in the top 5%. I enjoy attending sporting events but if I had a choice between fourth row seats on the 50 yard line watching tOSU Buckeyes play or watch Ms Merchant in court, it would be a toss up.

I hired Rebecca McLaws as my divorce attorney. I knew my case would be extremely complex. Rebecca is compassionate, honest, thorough in a courtroom and very detailed! She kept me informed of all my options and explained the process in a manner I could understand. I’ve been so impressed with her and her character, I would absolutely hire her as my attorney again, if needed for any reason. I would HIGHLY recommend her practice! She is the epitome of professionalism and has definitely earned my respect. Rebecca and Rosalyn are a perfect team! I not only feel as if I'm a client - but a true friendship that has evolved from me pouring out my life history!! From the first consult with Rebecca I felt her comfort. I can't say ENOUGH about this firm! I’m VERY grateful!!

I would not recommend working with McLaw’s Law Group. My experience was marred by several communication breakdowns and a lack of professionalism from both Rebecca and her paralegal, Rosalyn. Divorce is challenging, and while there are no winners, a competent attorney can help their client feel more confident and secure throughout the process. To be fair, I will outline both the positives and negatives of my experience with Rebecca. Initially, Rebecca was very responsive. I did not have the funds to retain her immediately, so she kindly gave me a week to gather the money from selling my house. However, I asked Rebecca to escrow the funds from the sale into her account, but she deferred to my ex’s legal team to manage the escrow. This has since become a nightmare, making it difficult to retrieve my money. Once the case settled, I could not pick up the check from my ex’s legal team; it was sent via FedEx to Rebecca’s office, which failed to deliver it, causing further delays. Rebecca went on leave due to a death in her family without notifying me. After several unanswered emails and calls, her paralegal, Rosalyn, eventually informed me that Rebecca was out of the office. When I confronted Rebecca about the lack of communication, she blamed me for over-communicating, saying there were no updates to provide. However, I wasn't just seeking updates; I needed a timeline and next steps, which they failed to provide. During this time, I lost my car and had to rent one to meet Rebecca. After traveling an hour and fifteen minutes, I called to inform her I was running five minutes late, only to learn she wasn't in the office and had been called into emergency court the day before. Although she apologized, this incident was just one of many demonstrating their lack of professionalism and communication. This was my first divorce, and I had many questions. Given my financial situation, having a clear timeline and next steps was crucial to plan my life. I ended up losing almost everything in the divorce. Additionally, my mother and brother fell ill, prompting me to push for a settlement instead of waiting two more months for the court date. Unfortunately, the settlement process took longer than going to court would have, partly due to my ex’s lawyer, Jackie Piland, taking a week to review a document. Throughout the process, it seemed that either my legal team or my ex’s was not being truthful about the status and next steps. I expressed my diminishing confidence in Rebecca to her, and instead of reassuring me, she stated she did not want to represent a client who lacked confidence in her abilities and refused to return the retainer. If a paying client expresses doubt, the professional response would be to reassure them, not threaten to terminate the contract. Lastly, I am still facing issues retrieving the settled funds and have yet to receive a response to my emails or phone calls. Given these experiences, I cannot recommend working with Rebecca.

Rebecca has been both a miracle worker and a steadfast legal warrior for my case. I am going through a custody dispute with an extremely high conflict, irrational person. Rebecca has navigated my case with the legal savvy, expertise, and grit that my case needs. She has a fearlessness and calm that gives you the confidence you need when going through a contentious custody battle. Rebecca will not be intimidated by opposing counsel, their client nor presiding judges. I can tell Rebecca cares about me and my child. She takes the time to discuss options and strategies with me in a way that assures me that we are moving in the right direction. I would highly recommend Rebecca if you need a fantastic, caring attorney who will fight for you and your kids.

I recently settled my case with this law firm…and let’s just say I will NEVER use them again for ANYTHING . I was dissatisfied with the services and disgusted with the amount I’ve received for my car accident.. it was ridiculous how I had to constantly call in and upon doing so it was times new people were brought on to my case, and I would have to explain from start. They don’t care! And they received far more money than me as a client in the end… I wish my case was NEVER handed to them by Great Trial which is another company I would NEVER trust to do any other case for me… you are better off going to well known attorneys than this small new inexperienced office. Never again!

Mr. Treadaway is slow, disorganized and lacking in attention to details. I hired Mr. Treadaway to assist in a divorce proceeding. He asked twice for monies which I paid. There was no verbal or written contract outlining how or when monies would be paid or any accounting of those funds. I was under the assumption that if further $ was required it would be brought up at that point. 5 months later after the divorce I received an invoice for a rather significant sum of money. Further review showed the invoice to have a $1000 "error". I contacted Mr. Treadaway by email regarding the invoice and was afforded NO response. 5 months later her turned my invoice over for collections to another attorney and demanded interest that was never disclosed.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
