My uncle was being abused in a nursing home. Josh was honestly a gift. I can't imagine an attorney more skilled, effective or reasonable. He was always available. When I couldn't pay, he kept helping. He helped us in court. He helped fight him being dumped out by an assisted living. He won our medical assistance appeal. Josh was amazing to work with! If you need help, he is the only lawyer I'd call.

Was looking for a tribunal lawyer in a person injury case at a hotel or a lawyer that would take on a case against the tribunal system, sadly most won't because they have there own laws and ways on tribunal land they don't gotta follow our courts laws, so it's difficult to find a lawyer when they're not going to be able to make any money cause your likely to loose unfortunately.

I was referred to this group for a special needs trust. They basically charged me over $450.00, didn't listen, made assumptions, and finally said they were "too expensive" but have to bill me for the first hour. Needless to say, I ended the engagement. I would not recommend this law firm to anyone unless you're interested in wasting money on expensive, inexperienced lawyers that don't take their time to review your request but still charge their high rate.

I hired Suzanne Remington because she was highly recommended. Of course she was great during the consultation but lacked any kind of focus when it came to my case. I had to remind her over and over about small IMPORTANT details in the contract that NEVER got corrected. Those small mistakes put me in total danger and I never got so much as an apology. I scheduled a phone appointment to talk about it and she never called. I had to call the firm 20 minutes into my appointment time to have the receptionist tell me “she’s in mediation.” I then spoke with the manager and told her about the situation and she was going to call back but never did. Super expensive for NO reason! $450.00 an hour and all that I asked was “please make sure you don’t use my address on the forms, use my PO Box” I thought after 3 times stating that it wouldn’t be a problem…my mistake for not reviewing the third time. Guess what address was used.

90% of what your read is right on with Sue. I replayed her words in my head for weeks after. I made sure she know what I thought when I walked out of court. I looked out the 2nd floor window of the Mpls court house. I saw an old woman pulling her black bag down the sidewalk and thought, how can she sleep. Had 3 different attorneys in one yrs work on my case. All 3 quit. 3 mediations, At one, we sat downtown St Paul for 2 hours, nothing was done. I have now found out a 500K life Ins policy, 400k spent on a gf, and more was never discovered. Can't afford anyone to get my unpaid settlement. Everyone she has work on your case is a friend, They all give each other Business. Monica was the only person in the office that had my back and stayed on my case. We lost Monica to cancer. What a fighter! Look a her Law office now. Down to 1 attorney and the worst PL. I had my forensic accountant tell me in the settlement meeting, I should get a 10,000 refund. 75 characters is not enough. Drive as fare away from 494+394 as possible. Beside my marriage, M Sue Law is the worst decision of my life.

The prior reviewer's comments are spot on in every way. From her unprofessional and combative manner to her unsubstantiated accussations to her lack of listening skills, she not only exacerbated the ill will between me and my ex but simultaneously damaged my poor children for whom she was supposedly advocating for as parenting consultant. She is downright rude, doesn't discern fact from fiction, can't recall her own decisions even though she authored them, and lacks follow through. She overly inserts herself into the case matters and creates issues instead of resolving them....why? Why not? From her perspective each set of co parents is viewed as a revenue stream. It isn't about helping two ex partners resolve issues relative to the children they are co parenting, it is about the money...

Mary Lauhead at times does not see the unintended consequences of her approach towards litigation. While she can be an ardent advocate for her client, she doesn't realize her combative manner alienates co-parents and eliminates any good will. She makes unsubstantiated accussations designed to character assassinate the opposite side. I have found her to be lacking in civility, always combative, and seeks to always have the last word. She is not a good listener and has ruined my relationship with my former spouse.

I hired John Mack to defend me and I urge you to definitely think twice about doing so. He changed his mind several times on the strategy he was going to use. He failed to file a Judicial review in the first 30 days which would've saved me a lot of money in the long run. I even asked him a couple of times to complete this and he advised against this. He wasn't prepared and what he told me was not factual. He didn't represent me at all in the way someone should be after fronting the money he demanded. I ended up hiring another attorney after realizing he wasn't at all trying to help me and instead put more fear in me. I requested half of my money back since he didn't do what he said he was going to but he refused to refund me telling me I signed the contract. I couldn't trust his word nor was he even sure what defense he was going to use. Think twice before consulting with this attorney.

Warning: Pass on this one! Rohr is just another attorney (court actor) that doesn't represent her client's interests in the fraudulant system. She encourages clients to participate in junk reunification therapy which isn't a therapy. It's another part of the fraudulant system and racketeering. She helped the opposing side by not securing support and not doing needed duscovery. Her work product for $350 an hour is no better than a $180 hour attorney. She thinks very highly of her self (red flag) and isn't respectfully of her client's needs. She participates in the fraud of the system and didn't truly care about fighting for what was right for me. Know that the attorneys and judicial officers all belong to the same bar which is a conflict of interest. They work together .

Ken Bayliss represented us in a civil matter (our new-home contractor and architect designed and built a house that was out of code and had numerous defects) in 2013. We had to fire Mr. Bayliss midway through our case - a difficult and costly thing to do - but we felt we had no choice. We believed he would do a good job based on his impressive resume, but in reality he was not very astute at the practice of law. He never seemed to have a full grasp of the situation that we were in which put us in an ongoing defensive mode - a costly position to be in. He had many opportunities to reach out, on our behalf, to the other parties long before any lawsuits were filed, but he missed the ball. Had he been more forthright about our situation and more savvy as a lawyer, we may have been able to avoid a lawsuit altogether, but since he told us to sit tight and wait, we got served with a lawsuit. He made a huge mistake when he "accidentally" forwarded, via email, a large file of our private documents to an opposing attorney who had no legal right to see them. It was a huge mistake, but when we called him out on it, he only gave excuses rather than admit his error. Mr. Bayliss charged us $250+ per hour and told us that his hourly fees were much lower than most Minnesota attorneys (really!?!) Well, for that kind of money, I expect something more than boilerplate representation. I expect a strong advocate, someone who will negotiate on my behalf. Bottom line: Hiring Mr. Bayliss was a serious waste of time and money.

I regrettably hired Bill Lubov, a poor financial decision in hindsight. I will always remember William Lubov as one of the antagonists in a series of very unfortunate events in my past. Aside from basic coaching on my constitutional rights, Mr. Lubov’s contribution to my ultimate resolution was minimal, at best. However, given the opportunity, Mr. Lubov will wax poetic about his previous professional accomplishments, which he did, at length, when all I needed was a fighter in my corner. Given an opportunity to pursue justice for the wrongs done to me, Mr. Lubov shrugged off my experience as par for the course, before providing me with a pamphlet of the pharmaceutical lobby’s propaganda. Because of experience, I’m now a partially disabled person. Because of the cowardice of individuals like Mr. Lubov, I will never see justice for the misdeeds perpetrated on me or those that I merely witnessed. Go ahead and hire this man, I’m sure he’s perfectly competent (though he did not prove that to me). But know that this is a man incapable of a normative degree of human empathy. He also seems perfectly comfortable enriching himself off of a corrupt system, from my perception. However, if it is justice that you seek, I’d recommend you search elsewhere. Mr. Lubov provided little more than coaching on constitutional rights and his fees are very expensive. Thus I found his representation to be of very poor economic value. I spent more time listening to Mr. Lubov brag about past accomplishments than I did receiving his legal advice. I regret hiring Mr. Lubov, if for no other reason that hiring him was a financially unsound decision. When people talk about draining the swamp, this is the guy they mean.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
