Corinne is professional, dedicated, and patient. She took on my case after a few hearings had already been held, and quickly got up to speed for the final pre-trial hearings. She then won my trial in front of the magistrate, the appeal to the judge, and then the appeal to the 10th District Appeals Court! She is very experienced and knowledgeable, and she always answers my questions and explains anything I do not know or understand about the case and the process. Corinne has always been honest about her expectations for the magistrate or judge, and the pros and cons of the case – but she is also kind and understanding about my perspective. She really cares about clients, and it shows in everything she does.

Corinne N. Ryan is terriable at the court appointment. My sister had three court dates and ever after reminding her in advance, she still missed all the date. If I were you, I would triple think before I ask her to represent me as a client.

Corinne has been by far a horrible experience. My first time ever needing an attorney and I hope to never need one again if this is the experience. Originally she presented herself to be someone who genuinely wanted to help me but turned out being someone who most likely just wanted the $2500 retainer. She was never available for me when she said she would be. She never kept her word. She had an excuse for every mess up. She missed my court hearing. This was all in just a about a little over a month time frame of me hiring her. I would not ever recommend to anyone. Five months later she has yet to withdraw herself from my case and stopped communicating with me as well. She does not even deserve one star honestly 😢

GET THERE BEFORE 3:45pm OR GET A DOOR SLAMMED IN YOUR FACE. I just had a terrible interaction with one of the clerks that works there that shut the door in my face, literally, I could have stuck my hand out to stop it, but I didn’t. So I knocked. I was informed they close at 3:45. “I don’t get paid after 4” is what she told me. Their website says nothing about closing at 3:45pm. The person I talked to on the phone this morning said they’re open 8am - 4pm. This has been a negative experience made especially awful thanks to an incredibly rude worker. I hope you can find better staff in the future.

My Deceased husband has been a client for 15+ years at Kelley Ferraro. Over the years I have dealt with many professional employees from attorneys to secretaries to probate, etc. I have two employees that have stood out over the years one being Bidea Kelly. I met Bidea through a business that I had had and she had turned me on to Kelley Ferraro. At that time she worked in probate and always was very personal. Bidea would give you as much information as she could or turn you on to another employee that would be able to answer your questions. The other employee is Valerie, the settlement coordinator. sometimes in a large law firm It's almost the luck of the draw what employee you get to speak to and for the last eight months I have been blessed to get Valerie. When speaking with her whether it's a question or she calls to give me information it's almost like she takes it personal as if she understands what I'm going through. I have gotten more information from Valerie in eight months then I have in the 15 years that I've been dealing With this law firm. There is much protocol / paperwork dealing with a lawsuit, as well as different departments. I always felt in the last 14 years that my case had been Unintentionally lost in the shuffle. NOT with Valerie, she knows exactly what chain the protocol has to take before a settlement and never hesitates to explain why a settlement would take as long as it does! Valerie has worked very hard on my case and I'm sure she does this for other clients as well. Of all the employees I have come in contact with I feel confident in saying Valerie enjoys her job and takes pride in being the best she can be for Kelley Ferraro !! She's a keeper!!! Thank you , Linda Messina

I gave her phone numbers fir witnesses and she never wrote the correct numbers down and nor did she contact anyone. They only want easy money, they don't care about thier clients. They only want an easy payday.

Barbara Luke is an amazing attorney. At my very first meeting with her, she made me feel heard, and got me started on the next steps of what I needed. During the next almost year of working with her, she listened to every concern I had. She listen to me cry, she helped when I needed, and she fought for everything I wanted. I highly recommend Barbara Luke. In the end of my custody battle, I got the result I needed. All thanks to her.

Barbara takes child custody cases, to heart. Everything we have wanted and dreamed for our family, Barbara helped us to achieve. She was always there when we needed her. Communication skills were strong with Barbara, as well. Always willing to have a quick chat, if needed. She was easy to talk to from the very beginning. She cares deeply about her clients, and wants to make sure that her clients get what they want. Barbara is a good teammate to work with. She made the court aspect easy. She helped my husband after a serious mistrial. She quite literally turned our lives around, for the better. Thank you Barbara, for helping our family! HIGHLY recommend Barbara to anyone in child custody/divorce cases.

Attorney Luke assisted me with a custody case from January 2023 to July 2023 when it ended. She has also assisted me from July to 2023 to February 2024 anytime I reached out about the court order or other concerns. Although she is in another county, she stayed updated on the case and communication with me, and Listened to my concerns. Communication could have been better at times, but overall was responsive. Most times that I needed an urgent response, she responded. She is reliable and showed more consistency as the case went on. As a mother herself, she cares for children’s well being, as well as the parents. I would recommend her. At times, there were delays in communication but nothing that couldn’t be resolved. Based on her experience, she is very familiar with custody cases and knows the answer when needed. Thanks for your help!

I highly recommend the offices of Sebaly Shillito & Dyer, particularly Mr. Brian Muenchenbach for any of your legal needs. I hired Brian to represent me and my children in a particularly difficult divorce and an erroneous criminal matter. If it wasn’t for his diligence, consideration, professionalism I’m very certain the outcome would have been very different for me and my family. I would hire Brian again in a heartbeat and with no hesitation. He is an excellent communicator and was always available when we needed him. As far as I’m concerned, he is an absolute best value attorney. If his performance is any indication of the level of excellence of the firm, then I truly believe you’re in the best hands with Sebaly Shillito & Dyer.

Mike did an absolutely magic for me. He took care of everything in my court case and simply told me what to do and where to be. Not only did he get my case knocked all the way down to fines but, made me comfortable during the process. I didn't even believe him until the judge said fines and court costs, but he did it. The only thing I wish is that I would have used him for every case I have ever had.

Mr. Prephan treated every question I asked him about my case as an annoyance. When he had a pre-trial hearing with the prosecutor for my OVI case, he didn't even consider getting copies of the documents she discussed with him, like the results of my urine test. When the prosecutor tried to plea-bargain me into admitting I was guilty, instead of explaining how he would zealously defend me, he told me to accept it because I would lose in a trial. When I told the judge I wanted to get a new lawyer and needed the documents he had for my case, he didn't even bother giving them to me even after the judge told him to do so. In short, Mr. Prephan does not have your best interests at heart. He seems to think his job is explaining to his clients why they should accept being railroaded by a prosecutor rather than furthering their defense. Update: It's been about a year since this fiasco and I wanted to make it public that my case, which Mr. Prephan thought was unwinnable, was won quite easily by the Wood County Public Defender, who got the charges dismissed after the first pretrial hearing he had with the prosecutor.

But in the end I won Full custody and crazy step mom isn't allowed near my children ever! Denise is the real deal, she will work her butt off as long as you don't lie or hide things. Was very unhappy with her performance as a lawyer. She DID work with me financially. But other then that lost a case that should have been won.. Not enough fight against untrue statements in court or things that should have been brought up were not. Amongst many other things she said we would talk before court . I was scared to death . She did not talk to me. People started coming in in the room we were in before going into court room they were sitting around laughing and talking while I was in tears because we did not able to talk in private. . I speak the truth.

In our initial consultation, I told John what I wanted from this case and his wheels started turning. He said then what he felt he could do for me. In numerous other interactions, he would fill me in and update my status. At the end of the day, he got me exactly what he thought and I wanted. I see all of this “doesn’t call me back” jargon and though I did have an experience or two like that, I knew that he would get with me when he needed to. Sometimes he just doesn’t have what you’re looking for at the moment and I realized that. I know how stressful being a defendant is in a criminal case, you would wish you could chat with your attorney 24/7 because the unknown is brutal, but sometimes there isn’t anything to talk about at the moment! God willing I never have to be in that situation again, but my first contact will without a doubt be John. Thanks again man, you’re a rockstar!

My case was unique in Ohio. As a WA state grandma I was seeking visitation for my granddaughter. I chose Virginia through the internet. Always Virginia was very professional and very thorough. She mostly answered the phone herself and kept me on track; she was always available and sometimes with the three hour difference in time it was difficult for both of us. If she couldn't reach me then she would email promptly. I ended up stepping down from the case; knowing that we would most likely win; however the situation itself became a no-win situation. As in the beginning so was the ending, an honest, forthright attorney. I was never sorry that I chose Virginia to guide me through this journey. Thank you.

For anyone considering hiring this firm for divorce representation, I highly encourage you to reconsider. Upon retaining them for my own proceeding, I had thought I was hiring the best in Cleveland. In every aspect I felt I was under-represented and there was a complete disregard for communication and explanation of processes. Unanswered emails, phone calls never returned, attempts to reach out to senior partners (that never responded) to try and resolve matters. In short, I can only say that as one of the most stressful situations you will face in life, it is my opinion that you will only be compounding that stress in hiring this firm. A truly disappointing experience.

I was represented by the public defenders office and my case was won today, they did a GREAT job representing me and allowed me to also have input the entire time and considered it! Big shout out to Tia Jackson whom sat right next to me and allowed me to write her notes the entire time, and she did a great job with continuing to pay attention to the case, representing me, all while reading my what seemed like to be a million side notes during the trial, which she addressed each and every one of my concerns and mentions. She was a great support through our the entire trial, helping a very nervous and daunting situation not be as bad as it could have been. I felt very supported and they were all very honest with me as well as respected my concerns and wishes as well. I am very pleased with how today went and I can not thank them enough for being there with me, helping the court reach the NOT GUILTY verdict. All three of them stuck it out til the end, ten hours we spent, and they all stuck it out to the very end with me and I am very grateful and thankful for that, as well as the honesty and support I was given. YOU GUYS ROCK! Thank you much :)

John Dankovitch should not be a public defender. In no way he helps you with your case or tries to communicate with you. I would have to call him to see what is going on with my case. Even with the phone numbers provided to him to talk to others about myself, he never called any of them to get ANY info. In no way is this person defending me in anything - even with the solid evidence provided to him, he refuses to use it. Go get an actual lawyer.

I don't usually write reviews, but in reading the other review, I felt I should state what my experience was. I found Atty. Dankovich to be friendly, easy to talk to and very caring. He returned my calls and answered my questions shortly after I called. He seemed very knowledgable about my case and the court process. He was well prepared, defended me and won my case. I was very pleased, to say the least, and would recommend him to anyone needing a defense attorney.

From the beginning, Attorney Broyles proved to be a top notch lawyer. I had a dispute with my landlord, and was very unsure of the tenant - landlord laws and my rights in relation to them. I needed advice quickly. I searched the internet, and to be honest, I chose Attorney Broyles because his website offered a consultation whereas you could send his firm an email describing your issue and promised a speedy response. To my surprise, Attorney Broyles himself responded within 30 minutes if my request!!!! Without asking for any fees, he gave me excellent advice, which included quotes from the laws pertaining to my situation. When I asked him for his fees for sending a letter to my landlord, and for representing me in court if the matter went further, I was even more impressed!!! His fees were extremely affordable which also showed me that he cares about helping others.... it’s not just about making money!!! Ultimately, we did end up having to go to court, and he was absolutely phenomenal!! When I arrived, he had already spoken with the opposing counsel in the days leading up to our court date, and the decision was already made in our favor!!! Our appearance was pretty much just a formality. Since then, I have emailed him for other various concerns with the same landlord, and Attorney Broyles has ALWAYS been very responsive, knowledgeable, and professional with his FREE advice. With his help, I successfully fulfilled my lease with a difficult landlord, AND received 100% of my deposit. If you are looking for a great Attorney, I promise you that you will be extremely satisfied with Attorney Bruce Broyles!!!

He had no interest in defending my case. All his interest was to strike a deal with the prosecution. I asked for a jury trial on 4 M4 charges and his response word for word was "I'm not taking this to a jury trial, that's stupid." He told me at my first hearing "Let's get Discovery and we'll go form there" Two weeks later at my second hearing, "No discovery, let's schedule another pretrial." Two weeks after that, I called him the day before the pretrial and asked about the discovery he simply said "No." I asked him to file a Motion to Dismiss on grounds of The 6th Amendment, right to a speedy trial, and again a simple "No" I asked why not and he said "I signed a time waiver" I asked him "Why would you do that without my consent?" His response was, "I'll see you tomorrow" and hung up on me. The following day in court, he filed a motion to withdraw from my case, and lied to the judge saying that the repeated disputes over the phone was the reason for his withdraw. I talked to the guy 1 time on the phone through my entire case. He also called me a "Jailhouse Lawyer" because I refused the deal that he made with the prosecutor and asked for a jury trial that he thinks is stupid. My personal experience with Mr Borst is he has no interest in defending his client. He simply wants to make a plea deal and cash easy money checks. Extremely unprofessional. Nasty attitude. Rude. Disrespectful.

I was at a turning point in my life a couple of months ago when I met Attorney Micheal Walton. My past was quickly catching up with me and a mistake I made almost 8 years ago was preventing me from living a normal life. I was scared but ready to face a bench warrant for a felony charge that I had been running from for so long. After some searching I found Attorney Walton. From our first consultation I knew that I had found the right lawyer for me. He was so understanding and compassionate and really made me feel as though he cared about the outcome of my case. Going to court was terrifying to me however Attorney Walton took the time to explain every step to in a way I understood which made me feel more comfortable. After three separate court dates Attorney Walton was able to restore my bond and eliminate my jail time in exchange for 12 months non-reporting community control. I now am able to work, drive and live a normal life without being afraid at every turn and I owe this all to my Lawyer. Thank you Attorney Micheal Walton!

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
