Senft Injury Advocates were life savers for me after experiencing a serious accident on the highway during rush hour traffic. My car was rear-ended and I received back injuries. Everyone I dealt with at Senft Legal were excellent advocates in helping me navigate through a very complex, difficult case. Katie responded immediately whenever I had questions. Jack got me the best settlement possible in my case. I highly recommend this firm! They are knowledgeable, responsive and capable.

My wife and I had an issue with a local painting company who decided to change the scope of the work mid-project and we sought assistance from Eliot. His counsel was thoughtful and on-point and greatly relieved the stress my wife and I were under. With his assistance we were able to negotiate completion of the work. He was extremely responsive and patient with us. I will definitely be contacting him again in the future if we need counsel.

Caitlin Mitchell and her team did a phenomenal job handling my case, and I couldn't be more impressed with her professionalism and expertise. Caitlin always took the time to listen to my concerns and explain the process, keeping me informed at every stage. Her attention to detail and her dedication made all the difference. When I needed a voice, she provided it. The outcome exceeded my expectations, especially considering how challenging and complex the case was to navigate. Caitlin is compassionate, knowledgeable, and fully committed to her clients. We had a very bad experience with Mr. Hwang. This was the only appointment we had with him. I think he is impersonal, angry, self absorbed and not patient. What do people need when they are going through the worst of their lives? -Patience, kindness and awareness of other people’s feelings, as death can be devastating for the family and friends. Knowledge without these traits is like getting a big enciclopedia. Please read all the reviews that have been written about him. I did not before setting an appointment, and regretted it.

Mr. Stern was extremely professional and thorough throughout the entire process of my case. His experience and knowledge proved to be well worth the seemingly high price. I'm glad to have spent the money to have such a vital role, in my life changing event, filled by Mr. Stern and his team. Mr. Stern not only did his job talking with the DA and professionals in and out of court, but also, made sure to check in with me that I was doing well and reassuring me during various difficult and frustrating stages of the process. If you are facing a rough road ahead of you, like I did, with criminal matters... do yourself a favor and contact Mr. Stern. Remember the high price comes with many years of experience, skill, and knowledge you're going to need for the BEST possible outcome in your case.

My life crumbled and fell apart at 22 when I was charged with strict liability statutory rape charges, for conduct that lacked any criminal intent. Desperate and hopeless, I was looking at decades in prison when I first met Zach, but he immediately assuaged much of my worries through his sharp analysis and strategizing in just the first consultation. My case was fairly complex, involving social media and communication logs, but Zach wasn't afraid of combing through it all to find any and all avenues of attack. Zach also went above and beyond in easing and dealing with my emotional turmoil, while never failing to be professional and honest with me about the potential outcomes of my case. And despite being charged in one of the worst counties to be prosecuted for a sex crime, Zach fought hard and was able to secure an outcome with only probation, allowing me the chance to plan my future and rebuild my life. Zach is unquestionably one of the best lawyers around, and he is truly dedicated to helping people navigate and fight against a system that at times can feel labyrinthine, overwhelming, and unjust. He understands the financial, mental, and societal toll that criminal charges and convictions can bring, and he never fails in treating his clients with the utmost compassion and respect. His pricing was fair, and his services, expertise, and connections are *well* worth it. Due to financial difficulties, he even worked with me to organize a generous payment plan. If you are ever facing serious charges and need a pitbull to fight for your rights and freedom, it would be a mistake not to call Zachary Stern.

An incredible criminal defense attorney with everything you could ask for in one - honest, intelligent, hard-working, charismatic, and compassionate. I was in a hopeless and extremely difficult situation facing decades in prison on charges as worse as they get, and after consulting several other lawyers, I only grew more hopeless. In the first consultation, Zach immediately stood out like a beacon of light among the rest, strategizing and coming up with concrete plans of attack to beat my case. In the end, he was able to get me an amazing outcome without any prison. Zach knows his craft, and he will fight tooth and nail for your rights and your freedom, even in the most severe and complex of cases.

I was charged with several Measure 11 adult charges while I was a minor. I researched the best attorneys in Portland, and Ryan was on top of that list. He had a great reputation and extensive experience. After talking to several attorneys, I decided to hire Ryan. He is honest, kind and brilliant. He was able to reverse my adult charges and sent my case back to the juvenile court. This was a very hard case, but he was able to use his extensive knowledge of the law to win my case. He gave me my life back!! I would highly recommend Ryan to my friends and Family.

Throughout the entire process, he maintained the highest ethical standards, ensuring that every decision and action was driven by a deep commitment to justice. His powerful presence in the courtroom and also during the plea-bargaining process instilled confidence and respect from all parties involved. What impressed me most was his relatability. Adam worked for the dismissal of my case for over a year and was extremely responsive every step of the way. My case was an embarrassing one for me and Adam was very professional and non judgmental. He understands that bad things happen to good people and he will fight for you even when the circumstances are unusual. Adam's paralegal Dawn was an amazing help to me, she was highly sympathetic to my position and was able to catch a miscommunication that could have potentially prevented me from completing the requirements necessary for the dismissal. I'm happy to say they were successful in getting my case dismissed. I am thoroughly satisfied with the work these great people did for me and I will turn to them first in the future and highly recommend them to anyone needing legal representation.

Andrew Kohlmetz saved me from spending time in jail and having an ugly charge on my record. He was able to reach a fair and reasonable settlement of my case thanks to his intelligence, skills, experience, and deep knowledge of the local criminal justice system. He countered the prosecution’s intransigence with a clever and forceful legal stance and ultimately prevailed. In every meeting with me, Andrew Kohlmetz listened carefully and thoroughly answered my questions, explaining clearly my legal options and the likely consequences of each. I hired him after my previous attorney had been unable to make any progress toward a reasonable settlement in seven months. In the first half an hour on my case, Andrew Kohlmetz gave me more useful and specific information, advice, and legal references than my previous attorney had given me during the entire seven months that I had him on retainer. I highly recommend Andrew Kohlmetz to anyone who is charged with a crime in the Portland area, whether guilty or not.

I was referred to Dan by another trusted attorney and thank goodness because I think it would be difficult to find the best just by going "to the phone book" aka online. I've worked with Dan and his firm on a couple of family law occasions and he was highly responsive, professional, and overall very reasonable for the value provided. He didn't every abuse time or make you feel "on the clock" but rather worked efficiently to solve the issues at hand, and worked in a very good timeline for the results that I had hoped to accomplish. Highly recommend him and his firm for family law.

Any custody case can be difficult, but with a narcissist you will be in for one of the most painful, stressful and expensive rides of your life. I knew I needed the best. I chose Dan - after meeting with several attorneys - because he actively listened to my needs and wants and responded intelligently. He also didn’t just tell me what I wanted to hear. His view was informed and balanced. I knew, no matter how willing I was to compromise, I was in for a battle. I needed an attorney who would take the high road but would also be aggressive when need be. Dan is honest, seasoned and smart. I am extremely happy with my decision to work with him and with the job he has done representing me. Dan zeroed in on the immediate significant issues for me and my small child, as well as the future I wanted to build for us. After many years of squabbling with a narcissist and getting lost in crazy-making circles of disagreement with no resolution, I needed a plan in writing that we both agreed to. I got that and I was pleased with it. It took a lot of negotiation (because the other side created barriers) but in the end it was well worth it. Dan also did an excellent job of distinguishing the limits of the law. Many times he encouraged compromise where appropriate and he repeatedly encouraged me to only pursue what a judge would uphold. Throughout my case he was an advocate and helped me avoid court for some time. However, in the end, because of the other side, it was unavoidable. Dan was incredibly well prepared for the trial, and he did a phenomenal job. He argued fairly and intelligently; he is a quick thinker and he didn’t miss a beat. We were successful on every single issue. This outcome makes an enormous impact on my child’s life. I would definitely want to work with him in the future and I have already recommended him to friends and colleagues. Dan has decades of experience. He is also empathetic and has fair billing practices. Top-notch professional and decent human.

I'm not writing this review after realizing how grateful and fortunate I am now that my legal crisis has finally ended. I am writing to give the sincerest appreciation I can for the tireless efforts given by Dan Margolin and his entire staff for defending me against the most hostile, untrue, dishonest, calculating and devious attacks that anyone should ever have to be exposed to in one lifetime, and I am not exaggerating. I have never met anyone with such legal acuity and intensity when called upon than from Dan Margolin. I was frequently surprised and honored as I witnessed his tangible defensive responses against opposing council at each turn. I've also witnessed many times when the judge and opposing council thanked Dan for his legal enlightenment which assured me that Dan is no common attorney. I strongly recommend that IF you want the very best, you want your hard-earned money well spent, and by luck Dan Margolin is available? Then look no further and consider yourself very well protected as I have.

I have been involved in a very challenging case with very significant mental health problems of the other parent that, unfortunately, continue to impact the life of a child. I was initially referred to Mr. Newsom from a friend and was a bit hesitant at first with all of the attorneys I met with. Upon meeting Mr. Newsom and discussing our case, I quickly found that he was there for the right reasons and was vastly skilled in areas that I needed the most support in. He is able to keep a level head in very challenging situations which, in turn, allows him to see the big picture to not only focus on immediate needs but also the 'long game'. He is incredibly skilled in drafting responses and documents as well as seeing areas that you, the client, may need to improve and will direct you to appropriate coaching or resources that will benefit your family and, most importantly, your child. He is 'soft' when it's needed yet will stand strong when the time dictates and always keeps the child's interest as the ultimate goal, which was so important to me. He is skilled in the overall strategy, timing of communications, mediation, litigation, and guiding other professionals that may be involved in your case. He brings a well rounded skillset during periods of less conflict in your case and shines when it is most needed in small ways that you may not see in the moment but set the course for the upcoming years. He is deft, articulate, and level headed. I can't more strongly support Mr. Newsom in his skills that are needed to navigate, support, or litigate very challenging situations.

I’d like to thank Andy Newsom from bottom of my heart. Before coming to Gearing Rackner and McGrath I had previous counsel who made mistakes that ended up costing me time with my kids and a lot of money. Andy clearly explained my options and provided me with realistic expectations. He did everything he could to help me understand all of the costs of each option. He really helped me feel comfortable and confident. After our initial consultation he quickly picked up the pieces of my case. He put together a plan of attack which led to negotiations and a fair and equitable resolution. I realized right away how ethical he is. He clearly proved himself as an outstanding attorney, but, just as important, he was honest, kind hearted, and personable. Andy and his team are invaluable and will fight for your rights as a parent. I am forever grateful and blessed to have had them on my side. Sincerely, Karl

I highly recommend Mr. Newsom. I couldn't be more confident in what I am doing without his voice of reason and consistent advice. He is skilled, forthright, professional and easy to communicate with. In a court room he is organized, respectful and to the point. He is a solid attorney who understands the realities of divorce and custodial procedures, not just while dealing with the court but also in guiding his clients towards a fair and realistic resolution. Having been a client with Gearing Richner and McGrath for several years (Mike McGrath successfully handled my divorce and recommended Andy for new issues) I have been very satisfied as a client and continue to receive sound advise. I wouldn't want to walk into any negotiation or courtroom without him. Linda Moore, his assistant is a valuable asset and support.

We were given a referral to Mr. Thomas Coan by someone very pleased with his representation. Thomas worked with us for a year as there were a number of extensions. He listened to us and gave us a clear plan of action to prepare for court. He was honest about the possibilities of how the case could turn out, which allowed us to prepare if it went to the negative. He took many notes and asked a lot of questions. There was a video of the incident which he viewed multiple times. We had a number of friends and family that came to court with us. When the case was dismissed and there was much rejoicing, he was genuinely glad and even joined us all for a coffee celebration! We highly recommend Mr. Thomas Coan.

I retained Thomas after my previous attorney advised me to plead guilty to a felony that I did not commit. Thomas actually spent the time to examine all of the prosecution’s evidence. He picked apart and disproved all charges before it went to trial. He relentlessly fought for me and my family every step of the way. Thomas was exceptional at communicating and responding to my questions quickly. In the end I did except a plea of a class B misdemeanor. This was a great win considering the original charges were measure 11 felony and 2 class A misdemeanors. I would highly recommend Thomas Coan to any person facing criminal charges.

Mr Cook was able to assist me legally with a situation where I was more or less, backed up against a wall, and thankfully resolved in a matter of days. It's nice to have immediate responses and that's exactly what I received. He was professional, straight forward and able to explain things to me in a way I understood. Very polite too! Definitely one to keep in the contacts list in case I need legal representation in the future.

I can't say enough about Grant Cook, representing me in two different cases. In two separate courts. One case against a landlord. The other a family court matter. I found him to be thorough and an excellent communicator. Kept me in the loop with information as he received it. He spoke in a way that gave me a clearer understanding of the laws as they pertained to my cases. I know it can be frustrating for some who hire other representation and feel out of the loop or spoken down to. Not so with Grant. He does an excellent job of focusing on what is most important in a case and kept me at ease. I was very pleased with the outcomes of my cases. Very sharp, trustworthy, and caring. I can't imagine being represented by anyone else.

Bronson James is the attorney that the Super 100 attorneys go to for expert legal advice. A noted authority in both Federal and Oregon criminal law as well as an expert appeal tactician Mr. James’ legal opinion is also asked for by Court Judges prior to their rulings. Mr. James was on the “short list” for consideration as one of Oregon’s state Appellant Judges. Justly earned as he successfully argued the 2014 U.S. Supreme Court case Riley v. California as counsel for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Brennan Center for Justice. In this landmark Supreme Court decision, national law enforcement officers now can no longer search cell phones without a court ordered search warrant based upon probable cause. I was fortunate to have Mr. James on my legal defense team as he was able to recommend and negotiate the best possible outcome for my case based on his legal acumen and professional reputation. I most strongly recommend Mr. James either as your primary defense council or to work with your primary defense council during trial to prepare the strongest appeal case if necessary. Mr. James is one of those few professional attorneys who can give you your life back.

After having my car totaled and needing physical therapy for the injuries I sustained, the insurance company tried to pressure me to settle before I knew the full scope of treatment I would need over the next year. I am glad I went to PDX Law Group and worked with David Richardson, who helped me understand how to navigate this system without getting taken advantage of, prioritized my care and well being, and was clear and consistent with all communication. Not only that, but he advocated on my behalf when the insurance company tried to nickel and dime what they should pay for my treatment and called them out when they would back pedal on their word. Had I not worked with them, I likely would have wound up accepting an unfair settlement. Cannot recommend them enough!

After using Rapid Visa to obtain a removal of conditions for my husband (who is from Costa Rica), we received an RFE. We were extremely concerned, so we contracted Grace to help us with the process. Years ago when I was first introduced to Leora, the managing partner told me she was a "rock star" and the "best of the best." I figured a good marketing campaign; Leora blew me away. As corporate counsel, I've worked with hundreds of lawyers. Leora brings a rare quality. She is creative in her thinking. She balances business objectives with risk. She ultimately offers so much more than legal advice, so much so the business leaders wanted her on their team for everything. She brought results and I'd hire her again on the spot.

Leora assisted us to defend our company and manager in a lawsuit filed by a very ‎aggressive plaintiff’s lawyer. Unlike other attorneys who we’ve relied on that seem to rack up ‎bills and automatically push their own agenda, Leora crafts a ‎strategy that keeps your concerns in mind. She was always pleasant to talk to and able to ‎explain the law in a way that we could understand. She’s also very available. When it came to ‎facing off with opposing counsel during depositions and mediation, she held her ground and made him admit his mistake and back ‎down. I highly recommend her to anyone facing litigation.‎

Leora has helped our company on a number of legal issues, but what sicks out in particular is her incredile knowledge of the Portland Sick Time Ordinance. The mandatory sick time laws are complex, but not for Leora. She also not only knows the law, she actually advocates for employes at the City....and she's made real positive changes for employers. How cool is that? It's great to have a lawyer that not only knows the law better than anyone else, but takes her own time to make it better. Leora is also an attorney who can see the forest. When you ask her questions, she takes into account not jus the law but also the business side and the psychology of working with people. For example, I asked her for a policy that said employees could not have piercings larger than 2 mm or any facial piercings. Rather than just sending me the policy and letting me later realize it was a terrible idea in application, she asked me what I was ultimately trying to solve, gave me clear scenarios for why I wouldn't want the policy exactly as I had suggested (hello, ruler to employee's face to measure piercings!) and then sent me a policy that really works.

When I needed a qualified attorney to help with a difficult case, I was at a loss. There are so many attorneys to choose from in Portland and my husband and I weren't sure where to find the right person to handle our case. A friend recommended Bruce Orr at Wyse Kadish and we contacted him immediately. Our friend neglected to tell us what a great person Bruce Orr truly is, which for us made all the difference. Bruce Orr has a calm, yet warm demeanor that made dealing with an unpleasant situation manageable. Bruce's confidence, kindness and thorough grasp of the law, made us feel as if we could survive our ordeal without suffering from long term side effects. Bruce Orr is not only a thoroughly competent attorney, he is a kind human being who understands that his clientele are oftentimes frightened and unsure of how to proceed. Bruce Orr not only won our case for us, he allowed us to stay in our home and mitigated what could have been in the hands of someone else, a very painful experience. We can't say enough positive things about Bruce Orr. My husband and I recommend him highly to anyone who needs an excellent attorney in their corner.

My father had a horrible accident that almost ended his life. I was stuck in a world that was unknown to me. How do I deal with insurance companies? Hospitals? Interpreting Medical Charts? I googled a few attorneys and the one that stood out to me was Mr. Coon. Mr. Coon has led an admirable career and has helped people like you and me his whole life. I contacted Mr. Coon's office and spoke to a nice lady who scheduled a meeting. After meeting with Mr. Coon he decided to take my father's case. It ended up being one of the best decisions I have ever made. What is remarkable about the Thomas Coon Newton & Frost team is that they each specialize in their own field. Mr. Coon leveraged the expertise of Mrs. Newton (Who is a remarkably kind, and a killer negotiator.) She made the world of difference within my father's case. Mr. Coon and Mrs. Newton were the light at the end of the tunnel for my family. This law firm puts their heart and soul regarding the individuals they represent. We traveled from Utah for a two week bicycling vacation in Oregon. Our first ride, first hour we were hit by an RV mirror it shattered my left humerus and caused my wife to crash too with numerous injuries. Upon returning home a friend knew this firm and reputation for handling bike v auto accidents. We researched this law firm and on our first phone call late on a Friday afternoon, Jim Coon took the time to explain Oregon bike (friendly) law; some legislated by their firm, and how his firm could help us through the insurance claim - alleviating our concerns for the claim so we could focus on healing (year long process). The claim involved two insurance companies and a mountain of medical which his staff assisted in managing throughout the nearly two year process. They were able to bring about the settlement we were expecting and manage our fiduciary responsibilities in the closure of the case. Sadly we never personally met our team because they deserve a HUGE hug from these Utahan’s. Lyle & Gladys

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
