Selecting a Law Firm in a time of tragedy , is one of the most important decisions you will make in your lifetime. There are so many Firms out there that will chase you down , make unrealistic commitments and set unrealistic expectations. This is the last thing that is needed in such a painful and difficult time Newsome Melton Is a step above all the rest. They are not some run-of-the-mill Firm. I went to the Law Office of Adam Pollack for a free consultation on a very complicated case. The attorney did a lot of research about the case before I arrived to his office so he could give me accurate information. The goal was to fire my existing lawyer to hire him, but he gave me more confidence by telling me that the lawyer was on right track. I felt very confident that I was going to like the outcome, and that what happened. With the advice from Adam Pollack, I fell that I was the one telling my lawyer what to do. The case went better then expected so all stress went away. I highly recommend Adam Pollack office for anyone who needs legal advice.

Words honestly can't describe the immense gratitude my family and I have for Attorney Andrew Darling and his law firm. Facing 10 years on two felony charges and I was adjudacted not guilty on both. Attorney Darling worked tirelessly when seeking discovery and his legal accumen gave me the reassurance I was in good hands. He is compassionate and gives you a no nonsense approach when communicating your legal options. Although, some things didn't work in my favor in the legal process. It was Attorney Darling who was there for both my family and I every step of the way. Whether it was picking up my phone calls in jail, throughout my case, and even during the aftermath Attorney Darling went beyond the typical standard of legal representation. He doesn't just care about you as a client, but he genuinely is passionate about justice, your family and how the legal system treats our community. Today, I am a better man and an active father in my son's life because Attorney Darling fought for us. So if you need help there is no doubt in my mind he will fight for you too.

I called them to schedule the free 15 minute phone consultation… I let it be known that I was calling on behalf of my mother because there’s a slight language barrier and the receptionist (or whoever he was) informed me that they don’t take clients who can’t speak the language even if I am here to assist. Which I find very weird and off-putting, especially in this day and age, because it has never been an issue any other place!! He then proceeds to give me the number of another attorney located in Kissimmee and said that’s where they refer people to (people with language barriers I suppose?? Or people they just don’t want to take on as clients for whatever odd reasoning they have).

I am very displeased with John Crone. I hired him in 2022 to take on a probate case and have been disappointed with the lack of communication. I have been trying to run him down only to get brushed off every time. I have emails stating that due to the amount of assets my father has this would be a couple month long case. I have been so stressed out due to lack of communication and being in the dark about everything that I have started seeking therapy. I go through the reviews and notice that those that are very pleased with his work have the opposite ethnicity of me. I want to put into perspective that he was paid up front exactly what he asked for and has been dragging my case for almost 2 years. He says my case is unique and promises to get back with information and never does. This has added unbelievable stress to me. I would not recommend him to any African American people. This already bad situation has gotten worse. I pray he finally gets back to me because it does not take months and months to answer questions or acknowledge my concerns.

Mark Longwell is truly one of the best attorneys I've ever had the privilege of working with. His track record speaks for itself—100 out of 100! Wins! Every case feels like he's fighting for his own family, but instead, he's fighting for mine. Longwell Lawyers consistently delivers exceptional service, and I will continue to rely on Mark and his outstanding team whenever I need legal representation. Update* first and foremost, I have not had time sharing with my son since I asked Mouse to file contempt. That was 26 days ago. This was the action that Longwell advised against. Then the moment he filed for withdraw, the opposing side figured they don’t have to follow any time sharing. They know he has my $, and they know I can’t hire another lawyer without that $. Second, abusive? How does being disrespectful magically upgrade to abusive? Oh I wrote a review, so you lied. Get over it. Let’s define abuse. Improper use of something. You quit, you’re holding onto TWELVE THOUSAND DOLLARS, with zero legal ability to charge against it, and you refuse to return it to your former client so he can hire a new lawyer. That’s abusing funds. My pool boy returns the money within a week if he doesn’t provide the service. Third, you did not call me Mr Longwell, which means you could not have left a message. If you did, prove it cause I can prove you didn’t. Why would you lie about something so trivial. I’ve updated to include the most recent billing after they quit. It is an indisputable fact that they have now paid themselves more in one month to quit, than any of the other previous months they claimed they did diligent work. I hired Longwell lawyers early 2021 for a paternity trial. It is August 2024, no parenting plan agreement. No Trial, Carson Mouser is withdrawing claiming I am rude and disrespectful. I never hired him, I had hired a different attorney in their firm and my case was eventually “assessed to benefit” from being appointed Mouser. I had no choice in the matter. He had agreed to go to trial, I paid him $2000 to “prepare” and then Mouser requested $10,000 for trial. Eventually the opposition hired a lawyer and requested an update within 30 days or I was going to default. I sent an email to Mouser asking what I needed at the beginning of the work week. He never responded, at all. I sent him two more emails after the mother refused to exchange at the end of the work week, he didn’t respond. I had to call Mousers office, once he got on the phone I had asked him why he didn’t answer me and he said that I sent my email directly to him. My exact words were, “that’s a problem?” And Mouser said he’s done, he’s withdrawing. So I asked for a return of my money, he said to call the office. I call the office and they tell me they will ONLY RETURN MY MONEY AFTER I SIGN CONSENT and then they have 90 days to return it after the motion is granted. I ask for my file and they said they only turn it over after withdrawing. Let’s be super clear. They were paid since 2021 to go to trial. They have 12k specifically for trial. They have made their intentions clear they will NOT go to trial. But will NOT return money they do not intend to use. They are aware I have to respond to the courts within 24 days or I default. Can you imagine your former lawyer holding onto the only $ you had for trial after they filed for a trial date, $ which they don’t even intend to use? I don’t make a lot of money. They know that though. I have been the sole provider for daycare for the entire year, and barely can pay that. I see Mark Longwell has responded to a previous poor review about Carson Mouser. His argument will be I was rude and disrespectful. Even if your lawyers assumed I was disrespectful, their response is to blow the case for their precious client? Hold onto money I’ve paid for trial after filing for a trial? If anything I said here is untrue, you should sue me. Cause I’ve been left with the choice to either pay for a new lawyer, or pay for VPK. $12,000 being held. 40kish more already wasted. I should have never hired them and fired them the moment they stuck Mr Mouse on the job without my consent. I should have just bought oceanfront property in Colorado. The same exact result would be happening right now. No parenting plan, no trial, money for trial stuck with in a useless spot.

I can’t say enough about this firm. If you’re looking for an attorney that will make the most out of your case and is also compassionate look no further. This firm has the best attorneys in the area. They are always there when you need them and answer calls and e-mails right away. One of the attorneys in particular, Muna Abraham has gone above and beyond to fix something that was handled incorrectly by another firm. She not only fixed the issue in a timely manner, but kept touching base with us to make sure everything is going the way it should. She is extremely knowledgeable and updated in the changing laws and will work hard for you! Not every firm is the same, and if I could give this one a 10 star I would. Thank you so much!!

Their reasonable pricing, prompt communication, and deep understanding of the law make them unbeatable. I highly recommend Longwell Lawyers to anyone seeking top-tier legal expertise without having to search through endless reviews—this is the firm you can trust to get the job done right.

I have been dealing with Mark Horwitz and his office for over 20 years for various reasons. Mark is probably the best criminal defense attorney in Orlando.. He is smart, reliable and responsive. When I could not get him on the phone his office always relayed messages and provided responses. I highly recommend Mark and his team for any legal matter on which they are able to represent you. Don't hesitate to retain him.

I highly NOT recommend Mrs. Kay-Ann Waite. I hired her in April and at the beginning she told me it wasn’t going to take too long and it seemed she was going to work hard for me. Then, I had to constantly ask for updates since she didn’t provided any without me asking. It is June now and since 2 weeks ago, I have been calling to her office and sending emails and text messages asking for updates but it seems pointless. If she is not planning to get the job done, I would like to get a refund and hire another lawyer.

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for the exceptional legal representation provided by Mr. Lavene during my recent hearing. Due to a health setback, my regular attorney was unable to assist, and Mr. Lavene stepped in on short notice. His involvement proved to be an outstanding decision. Mr. Lavene quickly familiarized himself with the details of my case and demonstrated a remarkable level of professionalism and dedication. He took the time to meet with me for over two hours, ensuring he fully understood my concerns and the points I wished to raise during the hearing. Throughout our discussions, he was incredibly informative, attentive, and genuinely invested in achieving the best possible outcome for me and my children. In the courtroom, Mr. Lavene was assertive and unwavering in his advocacy. He ensured my voice was heard and fought tirelessly to protect my interests and those of my children. His determination and expertise were evident, and I am deeply grateful for his efforts. I would highly recommend Mr. Lavene to anyone facing a challenging legal case. His knowledge, commitment, and client-focused approach were truly invaluable. Briana Crockett

I was desperate to get the lien document because we are in the process of refinancing our House and it was the only document that I was waiting to close the deal. We paid what we owed but for some reason it took too long to drop the check to their bank to clear up until our Refinance processed got expired and I was so frustrated because we got everything done except the lien document. The person that I spoke to in the phone told me, it was not their fault because they sent the letter awhile ago to let us know what we owed. Very inconsiderate! first of all you don't know what we went through just to survive on this difficult time. It took over a month to processed our payments till now I don't have the lien document yet. I would not recommend this law firm.

Bill Kiriloff was my attorney when I went to trial last year, and I couldn’t have asked for better representation. He is thoughtful, thorough, compassionate, and has a clear sense of morality and justice. I felt supported and listened to, and am so grateful for the hard work of Kiriloff and his team. The next time I need a lawyer, I will contact him without reservation. I wasn't sure if I wanted to write this review but decided to because I thought Ms. Coffman's approach was disrespectful. I was okay if she couldn't help me. It was not okay to completely criticize me in more ways than one. There were a few troubling aspects of my case, one of which on the surface is completely not okay. However, the action was a bit facetious but also motivated by fear. She also said people are probably scared of me, which is not true. I work everyday as a substitute teacher and the students say I'm their favorite! I have friends, good friends, who know I'm not a violent person, and know who truly who is truly at fault in my case. Then, she started to criticize my inability to pick up on the legalese, saying she has had people with less education understand better than me. I was nervous in part, and I've never had legal problems in my life! She also made references to other things I will keep private but she criticized as well. To be clear, attacking potential clients is just unacceptable. I can understand having a concern or two, but making multiple attacks is derogatory.

Only thing you can control in life......is the way you respond to life...... I heard this quote at a point in my incarceration. Those thirteen words really changed my life, mainly my state of mind. Those words gave me a push to stay positive and fight no matter the circumstances. In May of 2005 at the age of eighteen, I was arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder along with a few other related charges. Only a short time of five months I was tried, convicted and sentenced. I received a 30-year w/a 25 mandatory sentence to the Florida Department of Corrections. This is where the battle of my life began. I went through multiple attorneys and every appeal possible. I went all the way to the United States Supreme Court and was denied at every level. It wasn't until I hired Ms. Paula Coffman in 2018 to file a newly discovered evidence post conviction motion (my last shot) that I was granted an evidentiary hearing in 2019 and then later a new trial in 2020. So after 15 years of fighting, w/God on my side and Ms. Paula Coffman representing me I was finally able to get my case heard and granted some relief. The highest form of giving a human can offer is "Inspiration", so I pray my story will "Inspire" someone to never give up and continue to fight no matter what.

I was sentenced to 69.45 months in the D.O.C. I hired Paula Coffman in 2018 to Appeal my sentence. After serving 13 months she got my charges dropped completely, and got me into a treatment program instead. She fought extremely hard for my freedom and she will for yours as well. She cares and she believes in second chances.

Please beware of this law firm and check with the NC State Bar about attorney Patrick Megaro’s reprimand to not practice law in our State. He was hired to represent me in an Equitable Distribution case. Megaro failed to file a transcripts contact Rule 70 with Alamance County Clerk of Courts office. He missed the deadline then missed the dates after that could have gotten us an extension. My only hope for an appeal was over!!! They didn’t even tell me till months later that the appeal never went through. And to add insult to injury he blamed me for not hiring a transcriber in time. That is a complete false statement. I was told they would hire someone, file the contract and I would pay the cost of transcripts. So I paid the transcriber that I had to locate and hire because they didn’t find one within the time restrictions according to NC Law. Little did I know that I paid $10,000 for nothing because they lost my hope for an appeal. This is an unethical and unprofessional law firm. Please check out Patrick Megaro’s loss of license to practice in the State of NC for many years.

I used The Fab Law Firm to file my divorce and was quoted a price of 3,500 with a max price of 7,500 if we needed mediation. I paid the 7,500 upfront just in case. The case ended up not needing mediation because the ex-wife and I were able to reach an agreement on our own, which we sent to our lawyers to draft. In total I spoke with my point of contact less than 10 times on the phone and less than 20 times via email. I was charged over 6,500 dollars for the work because they charged me for every email they sent to me and or the other law firm, and at times sending multiple emails (conversations) and charging for each response. I am not sure of many of the items I was charged for because it was just shown as hours they logged for work done on my behalf. I really don't understand all of the work that was done because the ex and I wrote our own agreement and just needed it drafted into legal form and submitted. The lawyers in my case didn't negotiate or write any agreement on my behalf, they simply took the agreement the ex and I made and put it into form for the courts, submitted it, and we were done, but somehow my charges still reached over 6,000 when I was quoted 3,500 if we didn't need mediation. In addition I was giving access to a portal to communicate with them called CLIO, however they were very unresponsive and hard to contact there. My case closed July 16, 2024 and I am now waiting for a review before the remaining funds are returned to me. I was told that Felicia has 30 days to review the file before returning the retainer. However I spoke with them today (Sep 19, 2024) over 2 months after my case has closed and was told that she has now been tasked with doing the review but she hasn't got to it and doesn't have a date on when she can because she is busy. I am a entrepreneur myself and run multiple companies, which is why I feel that this is a completely unacceptable way to deal with a client. I don't usually write bad reviews but I do feel like people should be aware of my experience, and hopefully save them some of the trouble I've dealt with.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
