I am a family law attorney, practicing in North Carolina. I refer appeals to Jonathan regularly. He is the most intelligent and informed lawyer, about the law in the family law area that I know. If I personally had to appeal my own case, I would hire Jonathan.

I hired Jonathan to handle appellate and advisory work on a highly complicated case. Jonathan gave me the knowledge I needed when I needed it and balanced his blunt advice with kindness and an incredible degree of advocacy. He made himself available constantly and had an amazing understanding of the law and its application. A wonderful and ethical attorney and human being.

10/10. Although my case was lengthy (for reasons outside of the attorney’s control) Fapojuwo Law made this experience considerably smooth for me. Josiah Fapojuwo is an intelligently, knowledgeable and well experienced attorney. I was recommended to him by a peer and I will further recommend his office to whomever in need. I’m confident that he will always go above and beyond. Thank you for everything!

I’m so thankful to have the opportunity to share my experience with Thorp Law. From the beginning, Isaac and his paralegal Tammy expressed empathy with regard to the unforeseen situation I had found myself in following an MVA in November of 2023. At my very first meeting with Isaac and Tammy, they helped me to understand the process I was getting ready to face, as well as their initial plan of action. Also, as I’m sure every law firm does, both of them told me that should I ever have any questions, to not hesitate to reach out to them. Following that consultation, and during the course of their representation of me, every time I had a question, and I do mean every time, Isaac and/or Tammy always responded promptly to any question I had about my case. I can honestly say I never had to wait or track either of them down to get a response. I feel like my MVA claim was handled professionally, and I always felt that I was in the most capable hands possible. I would absolutely recommend Thorp Law to anyone who finds themselves in the unfortunate position of suffering from injuries resulting in unforeseen circumstances following an MVA. Isaac and Tammy truly care about their clients, and you will not feel like a number to them, as they both are genuinely concerned about the welfare of each of their clients and work hard to get the best possible outcome.

I would not hesitate to turn to Isaac and his team and would highly recommend them to anyone.

Clifford law firm was to represent my son in 2 counties both wake and sampson. He showed up once in wake none in sampson after being paid to be my son's rep. I would not hear from him nor my daughter in law would see him attend to business. The man mumbles and I could not understand most of what he was saying even though he was apprised I am hard of hearing. 20 months and nothing he said he would do was done. I even hesitate to give one star he deserves none.

From Top to Bottom, this law firm and their professionalism is on display every step of the way. Every interaction with attorneys and employees was a great experience and you could tell that their entire firm was looking out for my best interest. They were knowledgeable in the VA Claims process and helped me to understand new law changes and provided me with information to be able to understand the process better. I would recommend them with 1000 stars if that were possible.

I’m giving this review a 5-star rating solely due to the exceptional service I received from Wendi W. Berry, who worked as the paralegal during the closing process of my home purchase. From start to finish, Wendi was absolutely fantastic. She is incredibly professional, approachable, and highly knowledgeable, making what could have been a stressful experience smooth and straightforward. Wendi’s communication skills were top-notch—she was always prompt in responding to emails, often before I had the chance to follow up, which made the entire process feel seamless. Her attention to detail and commitment to keeping everything on track were truly impressive. It’s rare to come across someone as skilled and reliable as Wendi, and it’s clear that she has a genuine passion for her work. Her dedication and positive attitude will undoubtedly make her a tremendous asset to any team or company she’s a part of. I feel very fortunate to have worked with her and highly recommend her for anyone in need of professional assistance during a home purchase. She went above and beyond, and I can’t thank her enough!

These are my opinions based on my personal experience with hiring Hairston Lane, PA. Attorney James Hairston displayed a lack of professionalism and poor listening skills throughout the process. Despite my strong comprehension skills, which seemed to irritate him, he abruptly decided to stop representing me just two months before my federal trial despite two years of “active” representation under the same contract he now called “erroneous.” I have emails to support my concerns. In one email, he attempted to renegotiate the agreed-upon contract, stating: “As an olive branch, I will offer 35% to keep moving forward toward trial. Just so you know, in my 34 years of practice…30 doing federal civil rights litigation, I’ve never had less than 40% for trial. Let me know so we can wrap this up and keep it moving.” He further wrote: “Finally, if you don’t want to execute another contract, I will ask the court to withdraw from your case as it is an economic hardship on my firm to do any more work without compensation nor agreement. Trust me, I do not want to do that. However, I will not try prepare for, and try a federal case without the opportunity to earn what has already been invested by this firm. I just can’t do it.” These communications felt like extortion to me, especially given that there was already a fully executed and agreed-upon contract in place. Again, two months before trial, Hairston claimed the contract was “erroneous,” which I did not know was even legal. Additionally, his associate, Bryan Sumner, exhibited unprofessional behavior as well. Both attorneys’ words, tone, and attitudes were often inappropriate for client interactions. My case preparation was severely lacking, and I believe their personal circumstances—including illnesses, marriages, honeymoons, and bereavements—negatively affected the quality of representation. My case was no place for inexperience or lack of focus, and unfortunately, it showed. I learned the hard way that delays and extensions are the norm here. They may call it “case management,” but in my experience, it felt more like mismanagement. If you’re considering this firm, proceed with caution. And take their glowing Google reviews with a grain of salt. Good luck—you’ll need it.

I got into a bind and was reluctant at first because of prices. I saw Mrs . Lacy H online and after already seeing great reviews I decided to reach out via email to discuss my case. Mrs. Lacy was very understanding and was very willing to negotiate my price as well being that I could have well spent over 1,000 is dollars I ended up paying only roughly 5-7 hundred. After a few emails back and forth she was very straightforward and helpful regarding possible outcomes and reassuring me every step of the way and showing up promptly to my case. I felt very validated. Thanks for helping me get the best outcome for my case .

It has been an honor and privilege to have Sonya Dubree represent me for 2+ years throughout my divorce process. I am deeply grateful for her expertise, compassion, and dedication. Sonya's partnership with Tharrington Smith (THS), alongside Steven Mansbery's representation, allowed them to expertly manage my divorce case, including the complex business and financial aspects involved. Their exceptional efforts led to favorable outcomes, including temporary spousal support, successful contempt motions and orders, attorney’s fees, and alimony. Although delays were unavoidable due to the defendant’s non-compliance and intentional obstruction—even in defiance of court orders—Sonya and Steven navigated these challenges with remarkable skill and professionalism, ultimately securing significant victories on my behalf. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Sonya, Steven, Monica, and Carolynn for their outstanding work during my alimony trial. Sonya’s opening statement was deeply compelling, compassionate, and credible, showcasing her commitment to my best interests. She excelled in cross-examinations and demonstrated genuine care and understanding when questioning me. Steven’s dedication, exceptional handling of expert witnesses, and strong expertise in complex financial analysis were invaluable in addressing the business, accounting, and economic aspects of my case, giving me confidence in his advocacy. I also appreciated Carolynn’s support throughout the hearing; her presence made a meaningful difference, strengthening our case. Together, they navigated the defendant’s tactics with finesse and crafted expertly tailored filings. The diligence and commitment of the THS team have not gone unnoticed, and I am sincerely grateful for all they have done for me. I feel truly fortunate to have had their representation. Throughout this process, I developed a strong bond with Sonya, who not only fought tirelessly on my behalf but also kept me grounded, providing both expert legal guidance and compassionate support. She is an exceptional attorney and a wonderful person, and I am deeply thankful for her. Despite the frustrations—particularly with the defendant’s failure to substantiate financial claims and expenses—Sonya and her team offered me something invaluable: hope for the future and a sense of peace as this chapter nears its close.

I had hired another lawyer, but replaced him as soon as I spoke with Mr. Little. James didn’t over promise, but gave me confidence he knew the anxiety this matter was causing, and the hope that he would have it dismissed entirely. He talked to me like a person, not a case file. Mr. Little did have the matter dismissed on the first court date, while I’m still waiting on the refund from the first lawyer.

I started an appeal with Attorney Jurney for custody. She didn't do anything on my case for over a year. Afterward, I decided to drop the appeal since the other party filed a motion and moved my case to another county, which was approved by the judge. Attorney Alicia has promised a refund, and almost 2 years later, nothing. They do not answer their calls or return emails when supposed to. I have had mercy and have waited months before writing this review, in fact I wrote a review about 4 months ago, and they reached out to me and told me they were going to get my refund just so I can take the review down, but never heard anything back after multiple emails.

Ms. Jurney is representing me in a child custody and support case. Throughout the prep work to the temporary hearing, I was thoroughly impressed by the amount of information we were able to exchange at each meeting, how quickly Ms. Jurney comprehended complicated expenses and child support calculations, and how well Ms. Jurney prepared herself was for the hearing. Going into the hearing, I already knew that not only was Ms. Jurney a highly effective lawyer, she had also well familiarized herself with the details of my situation and the disturbed mental state of the defendant to be able to handle the examinations well. For me, facing the defendant who abused me for over 10 years was terrifying. Ms. Jurney's calm, confidence, compassion and faith in me was the key that helped me remain calm and focused. From my observation that day and my past experience at other (50B) hearings, her professionalism and competency clearly stood out in the courtroom. I feel very fortunate to have Ms. Jurney representing me.

Alicia is a highly skilled, competent and knowledgeable attorney. She helped me tremendously to stay calm during mediation and solved all the problems with professional skill, digging at the opposing party for the needed info. I already recommended Alicia to my friends and will keep doing so. I would hire her in a heartbeat again if ever needed. Alicia is extremely effective. I am forever grateful for finding her.

I found Ms. Sandlin to be overly aggressive with poor ability to see the big picture. I did not find her to be a thoughtful, measured, wise person. In one instance she grossly misinterpreted facts - I do not know whether intentionally or not - and could not see another perspective on events. I found dealing with her very unpleasant.

Debbie has a heart of gold but at the same time, an intellect that is superior. She has appeared for oral arguments at both the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the North Carolina Supreme Court, and she has several published opinions from the appellate courts. She cares about people and she has the intellect and tenacity to protect your rights. She saved my life.

I am thrilled to finally share my experience with everyone because I feel that attorney’s like Deborah Sandlin and her law firm are unsung heroes. I had the privilege of working with Deborah Sandlin during my high conflict custody battle. She was professional, knowledgeable, compassionate, and zealously defended me in court. I will never forget how she constantly kept me updated which played a major role in keeping my anxiety to a minimum and was always honest with me about all aspects of my case, for good and bad. To the Sandlin Family Law Group- you should be proud for taking a case that seemed unwinnable and allowing me to not only prevail at the end but to have my child back into my life.

I called and left a voice message on Mrs. Smiths phone, which received no reply. Days later I called again and received an answer. Before I could even get my name out of my mouth, she hung up in my face! I called twice more and was ignored! EXTREMELY RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL! 0/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND!

If you research Wattiker vs Governors Club POA, you will get an accurate understanding of Mrs. Carmichael. She filed a fraudulent lien on our home and tried to foreclose our property. What is egregious about this "thug" (my opinion based on her behavior) is she is a deacon/elder at a Presbyterian church in Raleigh!

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
