One of the pet peeves of dealing with law firms so far, is the gate keepers, when they say no "not willing to take your case", especially after saying that and if I request to speak with a manager of the firm and they still say 'No' as if they own the firm. In any case the lady conversed with just did not bother forward my inquiry to an attorney, because it was an EEOC case. Regardless what type of the case it is, law firm should still give an opportunity for an employee to tell their story, especially if they will provide circumstantial evidence and when it comes to EEOC process. Especially if the employee had already done majority of the paperwork and all the firm needs to do is provide assistance for the rest of the way. If they do not have experienced attorneys for EEOC cases, well that's a whole different story. Regardless, they lost another business.

When we were searching for a lawyer, we felt that God led us to this firm. My husband had a business depute with a corrupt partner who was a bully, a liar, and a thief. We initially filed a lawsuit in 2020, at the height of COVID. We had a very good lawyer to help us through the case for the last 3 years but he unfortunately passed away this earlier this year. We needed to have someone else represent us, and we chose another lawyer firm (not this one). That lawyer from the other firm dropped our case because we didn’t agreed to have second mediation, even though we thoroughly explained to him we knew it was a waste our money, since the first mediation was very unsuccessful. Again in search of a new lawyer, God led us to the Godwin & Bowmen firm; the name Godwin itself was a very favorable sign for us. After we researched about Mr Ira Bowman we decide to have him & his partner (Ms Samantha Baynes) to help us with the case that was ongoing for over 3 years. Within 4 months we got the court day & my husband won the case - Praise God! I give thanks to Mr Ira for his knowledge, wisdom, boldness, friendliness & humility. The second lawyer that we had that dropped us was really prideful. In addition, I give many thanks to Ms Samantha Baynes (his partner) who is very thorough and detailed; she spent a lot of time to collect the data for the past 4 years, including the info from the two previous lawyers. I am very thankful for Mr Ira & Ms Samantha trust in us & helping us go through this trial. Many thanks to Godwin & Bowman firm for your legal assistance. I highly recommend this firm to anyone seeking for a trial legislation attorney. Mr Ira Bowman is the best lawyers who can fight for you. Thank you Jesus & thank you Godwin Bowman firm.

Just spoke to this law firm, I would not reconnect this law firm. Stay far away. Their first duty is to the court, if a judge tells any one of their lawyers not to wear a certain suit again they will bend over backwards. Their duty is not in the best interest of the child but to the court first! Do not hire this firm, they will not argue your case in court. They will let the judge violate your rights and help them do it. When I heard this from their attorney during the consultation I immediately asked where is the duty to your client and the best interest of the child? She hung up. When a lawyers says their first duty is to the court that means you should run! Don’t be to quick to hire an attorney, look around ask questions because lawyers like these will backstab their clients!

She was incredibly patient and kept me informed every step of the way, making sure I understood the process and felt supported. Throughout my case, she was not only professional and knowledgeable but also genuinely sweet and caring. She truly believed in me, and because of her dedication and expertise, my case was dismissed. I'm glad that I didn't get the chance 2 work w/ this lawfirm. Dealing w/ them in the small amount of time & getting dismissed by Beth on the phone was completely & utterly RUDE. #1 They called me! But 2 them I'm just another big payday! They take more money then you get anyway I'm sure 2 them im just another class A lawsuit, who they can cash out on. To say that is just a given. I knew that much b4 they called but to be treated as such and so rudely, just floors me how the lady Beth on the phone was just SO super nice at first I'm sure she probably wasn't even listening to what I was saying she was just hearing cha ching cha ching in her ears! However NO matter what if that law firm could make money off me (taking more money then me in the first place) or NOT they shoikd have some integrity. Even if they find that they can't represent you, especially considering the potential law suit is VERY sensitive 2 begin w/ & bringing up & reliving those PTSD flash backs of the incident to in all reality MAKE them money!! It just disgusts me the response I just got & how she dismissed my call in mid-sentence just because she realized they couldn't make the money off me that she thought, due to the statue of limitations. Wow! Lady I wouldn't imagine that you've EVER had to deal w/ something in that regards personally or you'd not have hung up on someone who like everybody else that's been in the situation has been emotionally damaged by it! You and this law firm rank right there w/ the preditor in my mind. Either way it seems like you'd have no problem R** me out of money that is there from the multimillion dollar settlement, but to not have time to let me even finish my sentence bcause u can't make a dime off me so NOW I'm treated like I don't mean squat due 2 your pockets not overflowing.Treating someone as such, cutting them off and hanging up on them to chase a more potential lead. I'm sure that the phone call reflects exactly how your law firm works, you take advantage of the little guys & take their money! How I was treated on the phone call during just the intake inyerview, like a NOBODY not worth investing time in, when there is other clients who can get the big pay day!! It's sad as can be to outright display that kind of behavior w/ your actions pure LACK of integrity! It's Sickening! AS A MATTER OF FACT they called me! They had all the info in hand b4 they called me so if they at all were any good, If this lady knew what she was doing, or had any sense, she'd know that much before she just wasted my time & acted like I was wasting hers!! In fact I AM THE ONE WHO BROUGHT IT UP, IM THE ONE WHO MENTIONED IT, TO NOT WASTE THIER TIME! I stated that they need 2 check the statue of limitations bcause I wasn't sure, I'm not a lawyer, THEY ARE! So they just wasted MY time! Makes me wish I never said a thing jus 2 See how much time theyd waste if I didn't tell them 2 do THEiR JOB! & look it up! My advise would be if you are looking for a good attorney, this isn't 1 of them! Hope u find that out quick & not b4 it's too late when they take all they can leaving u broke, bitter & unsatisfied. I know these types, dealt with them b4 & can recognize the signs, the ones who treat U like crud make lil time 4 you, don't listen 2 you, & the most effort they put into ur case is when theyre takin ur 💲💲 & u can't do anything, u signed that contract! If u do hire this 🐍law firm & if they are like the lady I spoke 2, I advise u 2 read the contract & be in full understanding b4 u sign. This law firm I bet the kind that takes most of ur settlement. Contract states only 40%, then Wait & see how much more they take. They will tack on any & everything they can get away with. They will even charge for the free water bottles they provide you at the office 😑 print jobs, scan jobs, disposal of your files, the list will amaze you. & what u thought would be $20k after their cut is now only $6K or $7k!!! WATCH OUT FOR THIS LAW FIRM THEY DISPLAYED UMPROFFESIONALISM, LACK OF INTELLIGENCE, LACK OF LAW KNOWLEDGE, AND LACK OF INTEGRITY!

I cannot say enough good things about Hilton Moore. He does not hold your hand by lying to you. He lays out the brass tacks as it is. He is professional and timely in his responses. If I ever get into the issue I was in I will for sure hire him. He also was great in helping a friend of mine by giving her a great consultation. She too was happy with his honesty in her consult with him. I won’t go too deep about my reason for hiring Mr. Moore but he got the job done by telling me what I needed to know and to do to ensure we had the best chance at winning. No bullshitting me or blowing smoke up my ass. If I need a lawyer in my corner: Hilton Moore is the first call I will be making. What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
