I was represented by Mr. Strickler for a worker's comp case and was very pleased with his and his firm's professionalism, expertise and diligence. They were able to get a fair settlement for my family and I not to mention peace of mind. I would highly recommend this great firm to do the same for anyone.

Mr. Koch showed up at my trial as unprepared as if he had never met me. He did not use the evidence I supplied, failed to subpoena key witnesses, did not interview or even know what to ask my witnesses. Allowed multiple lies and fabrications to go unchecked, and did not provide even a modicum of defense. He is either grossly incompetent or in the pocket of the DA. As a result, I went to prison for a crime that never happened, of which there was no evidence, and after Mr Koch assured me that the case was a "slam dunk".

Mr Koch was a blessing. I was facing a felony with up to multiple years in prison, and Mr. Koch got it reduced to a misdemeanor with ZERO time in prison. He was also able to help me maintain my Driver's license. In addition to being very knowledgeable, he was also very compassionate and understanding. I don't have enough kind words to say about Mr. Koch. If I could rate him higher than a five, I would. I recommend him to anyone facing charges in the Stafford area. While other attorneys were hesitant to defend a case in Stafford, Mr. Koch dove right in, and got the best results I could hope for. Give him a call, and you won't be disappointed!!

Mr. Koch saved my family. I was facing serious felony charges. During the process I had moments of doubt, but Mr. Koch's confidence always reassured me. My case went all the way to a jury trial and Mr. Koch was fantastic in the courtroom. He had a unique way of connecting with the jury and making the defendant appear to them as a human being with dignity. Mr. Koch aptly showed the jury that the charges against me didn't carry water and they found me not guilty on all counts. He is amazing!

I hired Courtney to represent me when I was unfairly dismissed as a senior executive with a large firm. My case was complicated and there was a lot in the line. I loved that Courtney not only did her homework when it came to my case specifics (of which I cannot disclose) but she was a formidable representative for my case. She understands the harsh realities many women face in the workplace. Courtney is an advocate for women and has devoted her career to represent women who have been harassed, faced gender bias, and sexually harassed. Furthermore, she's seen first hand how women have been retaliated against in the workplace and she will fight for you.

I meet with Courtney Williams for an initial consultations. She seemed authentic when she communicated my option and said that she would take my case and that she advocated for a contengency with the partners, because I had a strong case. She explained the next steps, gave me paper work, told me to email her with any questions. I followed through as she instructed and I never heard from her again. I called and emailed several time with no response. The receptionist Judith covers for her and say she's in meetings and she will get a message to her. I called one last time to try to assertain what happened.. and got no response. This type of action is what gives the legal industry a bad name... So my message to Courtney is treat people the way you want to be treated. I don't recommend that you waist your time with this firm. They came recommended to me from another attorney who had a conflict of interest... I went back and told my experience and the attorney was shocked. He advice me to call Peter, I thought about it and decided to go with another firm... why would I give that firm an opportunity to make money off me.. Shame on you Courtney.. you should represent women better in the work place.

A bit lacking on customer service and manners. Every time I call them my "hellos", "good mornings" and "have a nice day" are greeted with silence, a hang up click or some snarky response. Do they know they're talking to paying customers? I wonder.... Call me old fashion, but I do appreciate a respectful exchange and greeting. Especially if I am paying top dollar for boilerplate templates I could potentially fill out myself.

Bottom Line - Colleen Haddow is the BEST attorney I could have ever wished for --my only regret is that I didn't start with her from the beginning. Ms. Colleen Haddow came as a recommendation from my previous law firm following failed mediation in a highly complex, contentious, and financially draining divorce and custody case. The opposing counsel - whose professional reputation precedes her as a person devoid of ethics and civility, made finding a willing, capable, and affordable replacement daunting. Colleen personally and immediately took my call for an intake interview. When I opened by informing her of who opposing counsel was, she simply laughed with complete confidence, accepted my case, and immediately got my case moving on the right track. Unlike opposing counsel in this case, Colleen is a legal professional with impeccable integrity and ethics; but not to be confused with someone who submits to bully tactics or shies away from confrontation in or out of the courtroom. In contrast, Ms. Haddow is emotionally intelligent and well versed in the rules of the court to effectively persuade and, if need be, compel cooperation from even the most difficult of personalities. In doing so, she also remained a steadfast, approachable, and responsive attorney (often responding to me within minutes), who consistently addressed my concerns, provided objective perspective, and gave absolute sound guidance amidst the evolving challenges within the case. In short, she kept me sane and grounded in arguably the most stressful and emotionally draining period of my life. In addition to her superior soft skills, Colleen also demonstrated unmatched expertise and experience in distilling and framing the key issues of my case (fully explaining the legalities), to include those I hadn't initially seen, understood, or considered. She proved invaluable in interpreting and exposing financial information, indiscretions, and activities. She was also proactive, strategic, anticipatory, and prepared always and on all fronts. I am convinced that she and her abilities alone are the REASON that ultimately resulted in my case outcome far surpassing my initial expectations from failed mediation, and resulting in a final settlement that exceeded my best-case scenario in court (albeit that she was fully prepared and willing to execute). Colleen saved me thousands in legal expenses, but more importantly, she helped me overcome a series of short-term losses in exchange for an overwhelming long-term gain in my journey to a new and better life. In the strongest terms possible, I highly recommend Colleen Haddow for all family litigation.

I could not have asked for a more supportive, thorough, and professional experience during a very difficult custody trial. This was one of the longest custody trials that our judge has ever seen. Throughout my experience, from the initial phone call to the final day of court, I felt well taken care of and I was confident the best interest of my child was always at the forefront of the case. Mr. Jeffries was straightforward throughout the entire process, steadfast, and provided me with the confidence I needed to make it through this trial. Michelle, his assistant, always greeted me in a warm and friendly manner and was a pleasure to work with as well. Mr. Jeffries is not your average attorney. He is constantly committing his time to researching the most up-to-date legal practices, laws, and relevant information available to provide you with a reliable and competitive advantage in the courtroom. He pays incredible attention to detail and was always prompt to respond when I needed to speak with him. I didn’t think I would find an attorney who would care about my case as much as me, but I feel Mr. Jeffries was just as committed and passionate about my case. It is incredibly rare to find an attorney with the experience, knowledge, professionalism, commitment, passion, and care he offers. If you’re looking for an attorney, Mr. Jeffries is a wise investment. I highly recommend him!

If only you could give less than 1 star... My elderly, Army retired father was hospitalized for more than a week at the Dewitt Army Hospital on Ft Belvoir. During that time, there were some legal documents that needed to be signed. We were trying to get a special power of attorney to complete my father's business. Oddly enough, the legal office at the hospital said they could not do it. So, we called Ft Belvoir JAG. They, too, said they could not provide the service as my father could not leave the hospital. It's a shame, but fine. The problem is the attitude that comes with asking questions. The attorney who i spoke with (didn't catch her name), but she snidely told me she was an attorney, was plain rude. She informed me that when my father joined the military he was not promised legal services for the rest of his life. I'm not sure what she intended, but I took it as, he's retired and I have nothing to do with that. She was not helpful nor willing to give me suggestions as to how I could accomplish the necessary paperwork. Therefore, I checked the website for the JAG and it states: Mission Statement: Deliver principled, responsive counsel and mission-focused legal services to the Garrison Command and Staff; to Soldiers, Families, Civilians, and Retirees; and to designated Partner organizations. I'm pretty sure that retirees means that they are able to ask for legal counsel for the rest of their lives. Honestly, if he hadn't been hospitalized on Ft Belvoir, I would have looked elsewhere. But, why not use what is right there on post?

Howard is a great attorney and deserves more credit , he is very easy to talk to and understanding, he doesn't like a lier when your guilty , and if u have proof of your not guilty plea even when u may be guilty he is happy to present it to the best of his knowledge. And he is close with the D.A and can get you good deals . But if u don't know what your wanting or talking about of course any lawyer can take advantage of a rookie. Anyhow I think very highly of Howard and he has been a great attorney for me since I was 10 and in foster care . Even as a adult.

Mr. Manheimer was a pleasure to work with. While being a little difficult to get a hold of at times, was genuinely apologetic, and always did get in contact with me in advance of court proceedings to discuss my case and calm my nerves. Felt very comfortable speaking with him, and that he was actually listening to me. He kept my career and ramifications of any pleas in mind when handling my matter to reach the most positive outcome. The first public defender I was assigned, I felt as if I was just another nameless, faceless, file in her stack for the day. She barely made eye contact and did not care about my side of the situation. I highly recommend Mr. Manheimer. He is a strong advocate for his clients and makes your voice feel heard.

He was all about getting paid! Every meeting was about how much money I had for him. Once he was paid I did hear anything from him about my case! When it started getting closer to my trial I kept trying to meet with him. We set many different times and dates and would cancel the day be for. Sometimes it was even an hour be for the appointment. Final we meet a couples of days be for my trial and was pressing my to take a deal. I didnt want a deal because I knew there was evidence to prove I didn't do what I was being charged with. Comes to find out at my trial he wasn't even ready for it he gathered nothing for it. So because we had no defense I was found guilt and now facing 10 years!! $7000.00 out the window. I'm Appealing It. I talked to a new attorney and he was in such disbelief and couldn't believe that that happened. In one hour this other attorney talk to me more about my case then in the whole year and a half I had Howard. On the bright side I was told I should have no problem having an appeal granted. Bill was professional in his approach about stages of a trademark litigation and successfully filed a lawsuit and subpoena, but like many big firm lawyers his priority is billing (at a high hourly rate) and spent time on the case that was not necessary, as well as other suggestions about the case like giving document review to junior attorneys that was not the most cost-efficient for the client . He wrote a memorandum about the case and billed several hours for it even though the client did not ask for it. Ultimately while the case was still moving forward, the client could not afford his fees anymore and had to replace attorneys

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
