Jay goes above and beyond to help people. I worked with Jay in the past with a slip and fall at a major retailer where I was injured. He handled the case with ease and kept me informed every step. He won the case and made sure to explain every detail. Recently I was in a car accident out of state and Jay was a wealth of knowledge to help me again. It's hard to find legal help that cares. Jay falls into that rare breed. Look no further, give him a call.

I am an experienced Washington attorney who has both fought Levi Larson on behalf of one of my Malpractice clients AND, subsequent to that case resolving, hired him to help knock down a complaint made against my physician wife's practice. Happily, the complaint against my wife made to the Department of Health, Medical Quality Assurance Commission was dismissed with a finding that she had acted entirely within the standard of care for her practice area. She, of course, knew it the whole time, but proving something is different than just knowing it. Levi helped us prove it. Thank you, Attorney Levi Larson!

Professional is an understatement when describing my experience with this attorney. Jean Shiedler-Brown saved my life. Attorney Brown studied my case and worked on my behalf to obtain the desired legal outcome as well as using the law to keep me safe during the proceedings. I found her to be knowledgeable, professional, caring and compassionate. In my opinion, this comes from a love of what she does and a love of law and of people. I was clearly in danger and the state gave the impression that I had no options. Ms. Shiedler-Brown showed me that I not only had options, but a right to be safe in my own home. She told me that she would handle everything and to not worry. She handled my case and I did not have to worry or appear from that day forward. I felt my first relief in a very long time. Finally, I had someone who believed in justice and she got that for me. Thank You Ms. Shiedler-Brown

My experience with Ms, Koler did not have a good outcome. I used her in a land use case in 2004. She started out appearing to be a decent lawyer but when my wife left me she decided she didn't like me but liked her. She had this "I'm better than you attitude" toward me and she didn't bother to tell me the last two times she went to court with my case. These two times that I should have been in court was for settlement damages from Snohomish County and as a result I was only awarded $1 dollar for denile of due process (actually my ex wife got that so I didn't actually get anything personally but the court awarded her fee to be payed by Snohomish County. I see she was disciplined by the State in 2014 which doesn't surprise me.

I've known Jane Koler about 30 years and recently needed her help with some land use matters: a boundary dispute and a tax foreclosure sale of property. She was professional in every way and helped me immeasurably to secure results. I know her to be ethical, hard-working, and highly knowledgeable in her field. Would not hesitate to use her again. I'm aware that the bar association sanctioned her over a technical discovery issue, but in my opinion it didn't amount to a hill of beans and doesn't change my opinion of her one bit.

Mr. Forde was great at telling us what we wanted to hear in a very comforting way but never actually delivered. He would get all riled up like he was ready to go to bat for us then back off the second L&I would show the least bit of resistance. We did most all of the footwork on our own case, had a difficult time getting a hold of him by phone or email and would have to keep close eye on my claim for any upcoming appointments as his office would never let you know of any upcoming appointments. This happened for all but maybe 3 over almost 5 years. I would fire him now if I could but claim is coming to a close so not sure if I can. This is not a lawyer i would recommend to anyone. Very unprofessional and not very helpful and his office staff also never responds to email or returning your phone calls.

David Gardner was the trustee on my Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. He failed to check out my creditors. He did NOT sell my home for the price listed on the Purchase and Sale Agreement wherein he sold it $25,000.00 under the purchase price as recorded on the Real Estate Purchase & Sale Contract. He overpaid the Mortgage Company after I repeatedly informed him that the pay-off amount was $20,000 plus over what I actually owed! David's mission to sell my home gave him a huge pay-off! You need to keep an eye on him if you are assigned him as a trustee. And if you do have assets consult with a QUALIFIED HONEST ATTORNEY!

Jim did my appeal for my dosa revoke. The end result was 34,000 dollars but on the bright side I won my appeal with the court of appeals granting me immediate release from prison. There is in fact case law regarding my case. At a dosa revoke hearing due to the potential loss of freedom you have a right to have a lawyer present. So for those who had there dosa revoke without a lawyer you need to a appeal that revoke. The state tried to appeal it to the Supreme Court but the court denied review so after a ton of money and 14months we won. Jim’s brief was unbelievable he is a genius when it comes to the law. Carl Hueber is either a legal super genius, or extremely lucky. He filed a losing appeal that made it possible to fix a losing PRP to get my conviction overturned. What!? Yeah. I'll explain that later, but first... Hueber first represented me at resentencing. He shook the prosecutor's hand before it began, after which I felt hiring him was a huge mistake: the handshake didn't look like the one you see before a fight. Hueber wasn't all that impressive in the courtroom, and his motions all failed(two different things, but related). However, he was a good salesman, and suckered me into getting him a bunch of money to file an appeal. Here's where the lucky or super genius comes in. The PRP filed by another attorney had omissions(at my request because I am a moron) that, by technicality, would/may have caused it to lose unless it were appended. By filing the appeal he kept the sentence from becoming final. This prevented the case from being time barred from collateral attack. This allowed the PRP to be appended. This got my conviction overturned... After a decade. Hueber also represented me at a bond hearing. Backstory: Before trial I was out on my own recognizance(OR). I paid $0 bail. It was just my promise to show up to court. After trial, I filed a motion for an appeal bond, which was granted. My sentence was 9 years to life, I did 10 years, and had my conviction was overturned(retrial ordered). I never missed a single day of court, have no criminal record at all, and my behavior was exemplary. With no conviction, my sentence basically done, being out on OR the first trial, no failure to appears, no priors, nothing... the bail amount he procured was six figures, and not much lower than when I had just a couple months into that 11 to life sentence. Yes, it was 11 and then turned into 9, but that's another story. I don't know if my review was that helpful, or if Hueber was all that helpful. He's either lucky, or a super genius. That makes him either a bad attorney, or a bad-ass attorney. These are just the facts. Basis for the rating. THE APPEAL: Six stars or No stars. RE-SENTENCING AND BOND: The rest of his representation was as disappointing as the average attorney, so three stars. Weighing it all in, and the importance of each - the average is 3 stars with a deviation of 2 stars. That means he should have 1 star or 5 stars and this review was pointless.

The office staff was super responsive, appointments were scheduled quickly and in collaboration with my schedule/availability, and the meetings I had with Ms. Choi were focused, organized, and super productive. I felt that Ms. Choi was prepared for the meetings, understood what I was dealing with, and discussed with me multiple options and potential outcomes regarding this legal matter, which is going to end up in Court. I did not have a good experience with the law firm. My main issues is that Boyoon Choi would repeatedly interrupt me and cut me off before I could finish speaking and there were some mannerisms like scoffing (in a subtle but noticeable way) that came off as pretty condescending and I received a general negative feeling from the tone of voice she used with me. She was also 6 minutes late to our Zoom meeting but cut our 30 minute meeting short nonetheless so we really only had 24 minutes together. I'm sure she would probably bill the time for 30 minutes to my MetLife benefits and not the 24 minutes that I actually got. The way I see it, if a client does not have the correct understanding then inform them in a respectful way. Trying to be subtle with mannerisms like quietly scoffing or responding with a negative tone, one that felt a bit indignant towards me feels less like you're working with someone that's trying to advocate for you and more like you're talking to someone that's trying to take out whatever stress she may be having towards you. It seems that no wonder her staff seems to sound a bit on edge over the phone as I can imagine what it can be like to be subjected to that over time. She also knew that my home is in Snohomish County but told me that she can't help with the eviction process in that area, but took my money through my MetLife benefit anyway. That's pretty messed up. Lastly, I also felt it was problematic to be told that she did not know the RCW that covered why a 90 day notice to vacate due to sale is not enforceable unless it is specifically mentioned in the lease agreement. When I requested clarification for her to specify how is this the case, she could only tell me it's part of the general landlord tenant rights that a lease agreement has to specify that an early termination can take place due to sale and that this language would not be specifically mentioned due to it being covered under the general umbrella of tenant rights. However, RCW 59.18.650 clearly states it's permissible for a landlord to end a lease agreement early with cause for the purpose of selling a home. Boyoon Choi should really be careful with giving advice that she clearly does not know the basis for. It is concerning when you ask for the RCW that she does not know it, and scoffs at you while mentioning it's part of the general rights for a tenant. Anyways, here is what I was told by another source about the permissibility of ending a lease early to sell the home: In Washington State, typically, if a landlord provides a 90-day notice to vacate for the purpose of selling the property, this is generally considered lawful. In Washington State, the enforceability of a 90-day notice to vacate due to the sale of a property typically does not require a specific clause in the lease agreement stating that sale of the home entails the tenant moving out. The standard process allows landlords to issue such a notice as part of the rights to dispose of their property, assuming other legal and procedural requirements are met (e.g., proper notice period and service). Lastly, she was also incorrect about my MetLife legal benefit. She said I don't have benefits for litigation as part of my benefit but in my MetLife portal it clearly states: "This service covers the Participant as a landlord for matters involving leases, security deposits and disputes with a residential tenant. The service includes attorney services for the eviction of a tenant up to and including trial."

Came highly recommended through a lawyer friend, I was not disappointed. Very calm and capable in the face of difficulty, balanced the need to do enough to win with keeping billed hours as low as possible. Made good recommendations on cost saving measures like buying my own scanner printer combo to save tons of billable hours (and driving hours) by scanning my own documents at home rather than driving them to her office and paying her staff to scan them. Not the cheapest but very good value. Listen to her suggestions, they're good.

At the beginning of my case with Mr. Bougher, he was very helpful, informative, and all around a great guy. Far better than the only other attorney I've had. However, I've made 10-20 attempts between each hearing to contact him and he never responds. He then goes into the hearing and tells the Judge I'm the one who's failing to communicate. It's hard to recommend someone who behaves like this despite my first impression of him being so good.

I hired Scott as my divorce attorney back in April. He sounded like a very promising lawyer and knowledge, dressing was questionable. After the first court hearing which I watched him shake while talking to the judge and other attorney, he went mute and told me he is in the hospital. There was no communication about the case. In November I was tired and ready to move on. I went to present my divorce documents myself. Scott got angry at me when I told him what I did and he send the papers to the other lawyer with words “this document was prepared by my clinical. She is from Somalia and does not know American laws.” I had to correct him and tell him I have never been to Somalia. I was shocked when he told me I am from Nigeria again I had to tell him I am not from Nigeria and he should take me as a client and know what I want and need and stop assigning me countries. I had the feeling he has no clue whom he was presenting. He would also tell me things like “you married your ex deal with it” this happens when I tell him to let my ex’s lawyer know that my ex has not given me his address as the parental plan required .on the last meeting with Scott, he started yelling at me told me he was going to get a lawyer and sue me for putting a review online then after talking about how he will sue me he asked me if that was a treat . Scott would not pick my calls will not return missed calls and even emails. I fired him after the incident. If you want peace of mind do not hire him.

He was appointed to my cases as a child and he was the only voice I had. No back bone. I was abused in one of the facilities after telling him to mention this in court several times he never did and I was replaced and now suffer from PTSD. He did not help me at all.

This guy is a slime ball. He takes advantage of anyone he can to make a few bucks. He with held evidence in our case and gave legal advice that was completely wrong. This guy shouldn't be allowed to practice, hopefully they will suspend his license for good.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
