My attorney Chris had show nothing but professionalism but at the same time the pitbull I needed with handling and tackling issues head on while keep a cool calm demeanor in the process since the day I met him over a year ago when he was with the last law firm. Mallery and Chris go hand and hand ans they make a great team. I knew front the moment I met Chris a year ago he was definitely the attorney for me. Super glad I I followed him over to Mallery and one of the best choices that I've could have made. I got a great offer on the table and I couldn't have done it without my attorney's team being involved. I look forward to keeping Chris as my attorney in the future with me and my wife's business affairs on the horizon and keep Mallery as our legal team. Thank you guys you are definitely appreciated. Great job! Keep up the great work!

Cleghorn's lies start in her add 1. Free consultation, she billed me for it, 2. Accepts easy payments via credit card, but demands cash and will hinder your case until she counts out the cash. She ignores all calls, does not take initiative and is not a lawyer you want to hand your life over to. I fired her and in retaliation she gouged be for $3000.00 billing be $300.00 an hour just on drive time to Waukesha Court, she never filed a single motion nor made a single call to me or anyone else. I currently have an active complaint against her with the Office of Lawyer Regulations and I am preparing a legal mal-practice suit because I sat in jail for 4 days because she failed to advise me of a court time, I had mixed up and I only live 5 minutes from court. Do not hire this woman, go with a public defender, same performance without the gouging legal bill.

I hired Kerri as my attorney pertaining to my son and his visitation with his father. I had previously worked in the courts and when chosing my attorney I thought about who I least liked being opposed to. Kerri was that person. I hated being opposite her, not because she was bad, but the exact opposite. Kerri knows law. She fights for people. She is good at her job. She also did a great job of helping me look at things through the eyes of a court, not just the eyes of an emotional mom.....so that we could make rational and productive points. While I hope to never need her services again, I would retain again hands down, if needed.

I have hired Steve Porter twice and we prevailed both cases. I watched as he fought to make sure I walked out with the best deal. We had a case that had plenty of proof and he had the opportunity to advise me to not settle, which would have only meant more money for him and a long wait for me but he was honest and chose what was in my best interest. I respect that. If you want someone that will fight hard for your rights and to make you whole again - this is the attorney you should hire.

We knew she would tell it like it is to us and not waste our money but she totally fought like crazy in court but was so helpful the whole way. Guther seems to know law reasonably well, but he filed motions upon motions which ended up costing me a lot of money in fees and in the end, about 90% of his motions were unfounded or tossed by the judge. Also his demeanor in court, he just got flustered easily and seemed to make silly mistakes or statements upsetting the judge, this also probably weighed against me in the end, I ended up with a judgement in the other parties favor that I was not expecting. Was it his fault or the merits of the case, I am not sure but in my opinion he was not very smooth about it.

I encourage anybody that needs something legal to go elsewhere! I trusted this office and I hand fed him everything and his associate Jordan Weekes guaranteed me to my face that my business was taken care of! I paid for my legal fees on May 1st and contacted him again with threatening phone calls because on July 3rd my truck was repo’d in Arizona after I had arrived here 5 hours later my truck gone!!!! and when asked what had been done with my bankruptcy absolutely not a dam thing! Then he has to scramble around and get a different attorney to do his job and I was suppose to get those papers via the internet on Wednesday well it’s Saturday and haven’t seen a dam thing! So if your affairs are important to you get someone else that’s competent! In the meantime I am stranded in a strange city without transportation and can’t even return back to Wisconsin because he didn’t do his job!

Atty. Roman did not represent me competently and diligently and did not earn her fee. Atty. Roman committed a criminal act in my presence; I rode with her to my first court hearing and she hit a parked car while she was parking then proceeded to say as we were walking away “I’m going to Pretend like I didn’t do that” I would never have assumed a lawyer could be capable of such disregard and shameless conduct. She said things to me such as “Please just sign the document and stop trying to add or change language” I never received a thank you, any inquires if was satisfied with services rendered etc. At no point in time did I feel like Attorney Roman negotiated in my name or on my behalf, advise or represent me efficiently in court, and before the GAL, communicate effetely, proficiently, or professionally, conduct research into the information provided to her and analyze provided information, nor did she interpret laws, rulings, and regulations for me to understand or advocate for me whatsoever. Attorney Roman certainly had no problem taking my money and, in my opinion, charging me for the same thing over and over i.e., going over the same emails and attached documents she had previously charged me for going over, she also had no problem charging me for all the "work" she had to do after her self-admitted mistake when she mis informed me during our settlement discussions. I had to pay Attorney Roman thousands of dollars, depleting my savings for email correspondences, phone calls and mistakes.

First let me explain Tim provis was very kind and accepting me making payments cuz you know I could not afford to give a big large retainment so he allowed me to make payments of $300 a month for a total of $5,000 to appeal a case of corruption and Manitowoc County with that being said although he eventually offered to finish the case pro bono and said he was planning on filing a writ of prohibition in which he never did. He told me I didn't have to finish making any payments I feel it was a disservice because doing the case pro bono or even at a reduced rate is no deal at all if he doesn't return your calls file an emotions this goes beyond just the case I mean the judge was an obstructionist of Justice he lacked him out of e-file wouldn't allow him notifications of hearings that were coming up for me I ended up having a warrant issue for my arrest he said he was going to file a Prohibition because they were denying to him access to the file so that he could represent me and he never did any of that and as I said in the beginning it started out very nice he was very generous but is that truly generous if he doesn't do anything for you and in the meantime you bypass your time lines and your love no recourse and you can't appeal it anymore cuz too much time is left so did he give me a deal or did he take advantage of me by having me pay what I did pay and then what radio silence after turning my calls stopped returning my emails. At the very minimum he should have filed a complaint with the judicial commission that's a judge was not allowing him access to e-file so that he could represent me it was a confidential case that I should not have had access to however the corrupt judge inserted me into that confidential case then denied me access to it so I couldn't have representation so it wasn't me trying to get access to records I didn't need or wasn't required to have it was the judge you inserted me into the confidential case and then refused to allow my lawyer any access to the files so that he would be on notified of any Court hearings when I missed a court hearing because I was that notified nor was he a warrant was issued for my arrest I might add that this case it won't was issue for my arrest I wasn't even a party to the case literally she parked me out the street to find me in contempt and sanctioned me 6 months jail sentence to be stayed unless than a month later he took back that stay and gave me 20 days in jail and I was forced to move out of state so now I don't know what recourse I have I can't file an appeal because the time is lapsed the only thing I'm thinking is maybe I can file a civil to find a civil attorney to represent me in federal court for ineffective assistance of counsel and judicial corruption

I called this man to get some legal advice and he was the mist disrespectful person I have ever talked to. First of he interrupted me every sentence that I spoke. Attorney Provis was recently sanctioned by Federal District Judge William Conley for improperly preparing and filing a frivolous civil RICO complaint against a number of defendants. Provis’ complaint was dismissed with prejudice against each defendant. Provis was ordered by Judge Conley to pay all attorneys’ fees and expenses for three defendants. Provis now owes those defendants over forty thousand dollars. Provis misconduct also exposed his client, the plaintiff in the case, to Judge Conley’s order to pay all the same $40+ thousand in fees and costs. Judge Conley also found that Provis filed the RICO case for an improper purpose. Namely, Provis was assisting his client in carrying on a many years old vendetta and harassment of defendants. See Upchurch v O’Brien et al, 19 cv 165, Western District of Wisconsin, Judge Conley Opinion and Order dated August 16, 2021; order 7/26/22 and Judgment entered August 4, 2022. Provis’misconduct May be investigated by the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Do not use this person. He only cares about himself and money. He doesn't do any work other than review the charging documents and "wings" it in court. After he has your money he doesn't respond to calls or emails. He seems to have quite the ego, still don't understand why. Court officials obviously have little regard for him. I experienced all of this first hand after it was too late. There are plenty of similar comments on line. Wish I would have researched him beforehand. In my opinion he shouldn't be allowed to practice law.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
