I had an insurance claim that the insurance company quickly denied coverage for. An attorney friend referred Mr. Les Robertson to me because he's an expert in insurance coverage and has a great reputation. Since the first conversation, Mr. Robertson was warm, empathetic, and very clear at explaining the law related to my situation. He told me the insurance should have provided the coverage and was willing to help. In a surprise turn, the insurance company changed their mind a couple of days later and decided to cover for the claim. I didn't need to work with Mr Robertson further but I will not hesitate at all to reach out to him again if there is a need. Highly recommend him!

I met Russell at a community Veterans meeting and later scheduled a meeting with him. Russell was always friendly and clearly explained the process to me. He never pushed me into filling a lawsuit or paying him for his services. He got a deal settled in a few months and kept me informed throughout the process. I would highly recommend Russell!!!!!

Nobody wants to hire a lawyer, but in finding myself in that position, I hired Alan Cheung to represent me. We were filing against a remodeling company for faulty work on a remodel. Alan was very thorough in his documents to the opposing lawyer. He kept me well informed by email and phone calls of how the case was moving along. When I was ready to settle the case and "just be done" because I was sick of it, Alan kept working on it for me and ended up getting me almost double the amount of money I was willing to settle for. Alan really put for an effort above and beyond.

Joe Leventhal successfully settled a unique and complicated case for us. In a situation when other attorneys appeared to be unhelpful, he brought our lives back to normal by restoring a sense of joy and peace to our family. Along with an extensive list of legal victories, the most impressive thing that makes Joe stand out among his peers is the respect and loyalty of his clients. Aside from sheer intelligence, knowledge and intuition, it is his genuine compassion, kindness and integrity which help to create a strong bond in his professional relationships. I would highly recommend Joe Leventhal.

I called Mr. Gropen by mistake as I was looking for a litigation attorney; yet, he was so patient, thoughtful, and kind. He took his time talking and explaining to me about the laws...and procedures...for which I am very grateful. I would highly recommend him. Thanks and kind regards.

I was initially apprehensive to have a public defender represent my case. I had heard stories that they were not as dedicated to the case as someone you personally chose and hired. I was proven wrong. From the beginning Carolyn was attentive to my position. She was willing to go the distance and I felt confident she was in my corner the entire time. She displayed exemplatory professionalism, and it was extremely apparent she was well educated in her field. We won our case! Thank you Carolyn!

While working as an in house counsel for a small company I worked with Sabrina on an employment matter and found her knowledge and professionalism to be outstanding. The best part about working with her though was her rapid response time (even after she was retained) and ease in communication -- very easy to get along with and capable of understanding nuanced matters.

mr. branch ( mike ) took over a case that was beyond the capability of another small firm. mike was able to adjust mid stream with a trial approaching and went above and beyond , in his case preparation. mike understood the scope of the case rapidly , keeping me abreast of each point and determining a trial vs. settlement scenario , ultimately he was able to achieve a great settlement , many thousands above the other ( ex atty's. ) estimation. i have referred mike to other colleagues , and i can now see what it is to have a former luce forward / berkeley law grad , in my corner .. simply put the quality , integrity and skill are evident.

I hired Dick Annen for an employment litigation defense. I've appreciated his honesty, circumspection, and his advice. His advice about dealing with my current employer about the matter conservatively and cautiously turned out to be something that preserved my job and standing with my company. While my case is ongoing, I think Dick has been a great defense and advice source for me. Dick has vast experience in litigation, employment, business and real estate law. That combo has been great for me, and his knowledge of the system has kept my out of pocket to a minimum.

We have been working on a new technology to implement Cloud computing for a few years and when we were ready to go public we sought Matthew's help to properly file the company. He was very professional and enlightened us to many legal matters that otherwise we wouldn't be prepared for. He also helped us file for public encryption certifications. Matthew continues to be our attorney and legal advisor as we dive into this tech competition internationally. I would certainly recommend speaking with him if you are launching a new business or for any related legal advice.

I didn't even start looking for a lawyer until it had become impossible to trust or reason with our general contractor anymore. A friend highly recommended Bob, and he was the first lawyer we called. Within 36 hours he had our project back on track. He shepherded things along for many more months until the contract was irrevocably violated by the other party. Bob continued to represent us in mediation, in arbitration, and in the end sat us down and explained why our lawsuit would very likely win in Superior Court, but it would be a pyrrhic victory for us, and not in our best interest to pursue. As it turned out, he was right. In fact, we later realized he had been right at every point in the process, not just concerning legal matters but also negotiation strategy and foreseeing challenges before they arose. Because Bob was willing to explain not just the immediate issues but also the broader context for them, and the processes that govern them, we learned a great deal about contract law and how the legal system works. And he also was a great moral support and encouragement and calming influence for us, especially my wife, who at one point felt so hurt, angry, and indignant, it affected her physical health. Bob's ability to "talk her down" and give us both a clearer calmer perspective was hugely helpful. Not something they teach in law school, I imagine. And through it all, I must say, his billing practices were very reasonable. His fee is high (or it seems so to me), but he coached us on how we could take a large part of the "grunt work" on ourselves, then submit it to him for approval. I had to re-do one particular project three times before it met his standards, but it saved me a lot of money to do that sort of thing myself. When it was presented in the course of mediation and arbitration, I was glad that Bob made me dial it in so well. And when Bob and his team were on the clock, things got done fast, I must say. Thankfully we have not needed his services since then, but if we ever find ourselves anywhere close to that sort of disaster again, Bob will again be the first person we call. This time we'll have him in our Favorites picklist.

Deborah and her team is very knowledgeable. She filed an H-1B case for me (my employer) a few years ago - and throughout the years, I contact her for questions on immigration status and she would answer me promptly and with a lot of imformation. I have worked with, and consulted other lawyers along the way but Deborah is the most knowlegeable. Often time, other lawyers have to research before they can answer your questions because the law is so complicated - but Deborah is so knowlegeable that she is ready for most of the simple questions. Of course, she reviews your document carefully and takes the appropriate action. I've recommended a few friends to seek her consultation because she is still by far the best lawyer I've worked wtih.

Rebecca played a key role in a successful family trust contest. My former family member who was also the trustee convinced my incapacitated grandmother to amend the trust greatly in his favor. Rebecca and the team used the documents and information we had to unequivically eviscerate the trustee's defense. This resulted in a settlement in which I received about 90% of what I was originally entitled to. Everyone's case is different, but she is truly a classy professional who will vigorously defend your interests.

What a Business Lawyer Can Do for You

A business lawyer provides critical legal guidance and support to entrepreneurs, startups, and established businesses. Whether you are forming a new company, drafting contracts, or navigating complex regulations, a business attorney ensures you are legally protected and operating within the law. They can also help prevent legal disputes or represent you in negotiations, transactions, or lawsuits that arise during the course of business operations.

Business lawyers have expertise in areas such as business formation, contract law, intellectual property, employment law, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance. They ensure that your business is compliant with relevant laws and help mitigate risks that could threaten your company's success.

When Should I Hire a Business Lawyer?

Hiring a business lawyer is essential at various stages of business development, including:

  • Forming a business: When deciding on the best structure for your company (LLC, corporation, partnership, etc.), a lawyer can guide you through the registration and compliance process.
  • Drafting contracts: If you need contracts for employees, partners, suppliers, or clients, a lawyer ensures these documents are legally sound and in your best interest.
  • Mergers, acquisitions, or dissolutions: If you are buying, selling, or dissolving a company, legal counsel is critical to avoid costly mistakes.
  • Compliance and regulatory issues: A lawyer can help navigate complex regulations, particularly in industries like healthcare, finance, or tech.
  • Resolving disputes: Whether it's contract disagreements, intellectual property infringement, or employment issues, a business lawyer helps mediate, negotiate, or litigate on your behalf.

What Does a Business Lawyer Do?

Business lawyers provide a wide range of services that cater to different legal needs of a business. They can:

  • Help you choose the best legal structure for your business.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with employees, suppliers, customers, or business partners.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Advise on tax strategies to minimize your business's tax burden.
  • Assist with intellectual property protection, such as trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
  • Handle mergers, acquisitions, and business sales, ensuring all legal paperwork is in order.
  • Resolve disputes through negotiation, arbitration, or litigation.

How Are Business Lawyers Paid?

Business lawyers typically charge either by the hour or on a flat-fee basis, depending on the complexity of the work. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rates: The lawyer charges based on the time spent working on your case. Rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and location.
  • Flat fees: For certain tasks, such as incorporating a business or drafting a standard contract, a lawyer may offer a flat fee.
  • Retainer: Some businesses may hire a lawyer on retainer, paying a fixed amount each month to have ongoing access to legal services.

The payment structure is often discussed during an initial consultation so you can choose the one that best suits your business needs and budget.

How Much Does a Business Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a business lawyer depends on factors such as:

  • The complexity of the legal issue: More complex matters, like mergers or intellectual property disputes, typically cost more than routine tasks like contract drafting.
  • The lawyer's experience and location: More experienced lawyers or those in larger cities often charge higher fees.
  • The nature of the billing arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $150 to $1,000 or more, depending on the lawyer's expertise. Flat fees are usually available for simpler matters like forming an LLC or drafting a standard contract.

It's essential to discuss fee structures upfront to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Business Lawyer

Before hiring a business lawyer, ask the following questions during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with businesses like mine?
Find out if the lawyer has handled legal issues for companies in your industry.
  2. What services do you offer?
Ensure the lawyer can meet all your business's legal needs, from contract drafting to dispute resolution.
  3. What are your fees, and how do you bill?
Get clarity on how you'll be charged - whether by the hour, flat fee, or retainer.
  4. How do you handle conflicts of interest?
Ask how the lawyer ensures there is no conflict in representing your business.
  5. Can you provide references from other business clients?
Speaking with past clients will give you an idea of the lawyer's expertise and professionalism.
  6. Do you have experience in my specific industry?
Industry-specific knowledge can be crucial, especially in highly regulated fields like healthcare or finance.

How to Check the Credibility of a Business Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable business lawyer:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is in good standing and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for client reviews or testimonials: Online reviews, testimonials, or word of mouth from other business owners can provide insight into the lawyer's reliability and effectiveness.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should have satisfied clients who can vouch for their services.
  • Check professional memberships: Membership in respected legal organizations (such as the American Bar Association or a local business lawyer association) can signal credibility.
  • Review their website and professional profile: A well-established lawyer typically has a professional website showcasing their areas of expertise, credentials, and case success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a business lawyer, prepare the following:

  • A description of your business and its structure: This will help the lawyer understand your legal needs.
  • Any current contracts or agreements: If you're seeking contract advice, bring copies of existing contracts.
  • A list of legal issues or concerns: Be ready to discuss any potential legal challenges, such as regulatory compliance, disputes, or transactions.
  • Financial documents: If applicable, bring financial records related to the legal matter you're seeking help with.
  • Questions about fees and billing: Ensure you understand the lawyer’s payment structure and fees upfront.

By preparing these materials, you can ensure that your first meeting with a business lawyer is productive and informative.
