Alan helped me with my bank fraud case. It lists it as one of his specialties on his website, but there is something EVERYONE should know, regardless of the area he practices in... Alan Yamamoto is a SETTLEMENT LAWYER, meaning that he will not fight for your behalf, but indeed go the path with the least amount of resistance in order for your case to be settled. If you are trying to fight and battle your way out of your case, Alan is not for you. On too many occasions throughout our entire case, he recommended so many options indicating it would reduce sentence time and it did the complete opposite. For example, he told us to disclose all of the files to the attorney and it backfired on us, only increasing the sentence time. On another example, he told us to accept the terminology by being the 'organizer' of a case in order to reduce sentence time, and now a new law passed and because we indicated we were the 'organizer' the sentence time cannot be reduced. These are just two small examples of other things that he has stated, but the opposite happened. We were too far into the case to switch lawyers so unfortunately we were stuck with Mr. Yamamoto. I WOULD NOT recommend Yamamoto, unless all you want is a settlement lawyer. One last thing to mention is that even at the trial, he WAS NOT PREPARED. His thoughts and phrases were all jumbled and they were not organized at all. This was SUPER FRUSTRATING since we paid tens of thousands of dollars to him and his company and he finishes his poor service with this. Honestly, I felt I could have represented the family member better than he did. I was absolutely appalled. Go find yourself another lawyer.

Hired him to represent my family for a school meeting. He could not even find out where the meeting was, and didn't show up to the meeting. Then, after taking our $2500 retainer, he billed us for over a thousand dollars more than that and sued us for payment, after not doing what we hired him for. He doesn't seem to know anything about state education law, which I think was the main problem.

We had previously retained another lawyer in the firm who has since retired. Obtained Jeanette Ojeda's email address from her receptionist and received an automated reply that she would be out of the office for one more day. Waited one more week for a reply. Nothing. Called the office again to verify that she was practicing and was seeing clients. Receptionist sent her a note with my contact information. Sent a second email detailing my need for a contract review and even offered a retainer if that were a concern. No response. How difficult would it have been to say "I'm busy and can't help"?

Our start-up hired Janice Housey to obtain a trademark. She added additional fees that were not discussed in advance, even though we asked. She seemed too busy to explain things so that we felt we didn't understand the process.

He is currently also operating as an Assistant Vice President for a nationwide company. My peers and I find him to be brash and dismissive. Not a good look for a major corporation or potential clients seeking competent representation.

Everything below is based on my personal experience, information, and belief: Never sign a settlement agreement with this attorney or allow your attorney to sign one on your behalf. He and his client never followed their own agreement, based on information and belief. It was a family dispute and the attorney knew it. His client made false allegations in a civil complaint and he knew it, based on information and belief, because he even threatened to have the court case sealed if we went through with the civil suit (rather than settle). There's another word for that, I believe... and it's likely accurate. He shouldn't be allowed to practice law if he can't honor a simple agreement.

I contacted Mr Mutschall to assist me with a case. He prepared documents for me but left out critical pieces of information (which I indicated were pertinent to the case). This compromised my position with my case.

Barbara preyed ruthlessly upon my family and me in our time of need. Despite claims to the contrary, she understood nothing of the process, had no legal strategy, and suckered my family for over $10 thousand. The last couple of months I dealt with her, she was on vacation in the Caribbean, a luxury she took literally at my expense. Any reputable attorney would simply have passed along my case to someone remotely qualified. She's the kind of attorney that gives the rest a bad name.

I was a client of M. Adams. He convinced me to start a case. I submitted him all the necessary information and paid almost the whole retainer. At pretrial hearing weird things happened. He gave me to sign a document right before hearing with values which didn’t match the information I provided and said that decision won’t be based on it – it’s just formality. You want to trust your lawyer. He wouldn’t say things he was supposed to protect me as his client. I had to stand for myself as much as I could, which is difficult when you have attorney. Pre-trial decision was very fair for Defendant and didn’t comply with M. Adams’s promises. After confronting him – I didn’t get any answer and he wouldn’t answer for a month with my request to give me my file. In a month he contacted, apologized. I still was hoping that it may work and I couldn’t quite afford to pay to another attorney. We met once to file one more document and then he disappeared again. It left very little time before final hearing and I was trying to contact him. Finally we met and he gave me any bill with ridiculous charges and acted against agreement. I realized I need to pick up file. I was shocked after reviewing it. He could take oath on one date and submit documents on another, which wouldn’t match what you gave him. He was late on all terms and all important documents were filed in favor of Defendant.

This kept saying the one major piece of evidence we had wasn't worthy in court ended up using that exact evidence in his closing statement. He treats you like you are a criminal until he hears your own witnesses. He likes to say " I will take your money", and don't think you can explain the story to him, he only wants a couple facts and stops you mid way through any imperative information. He forgets what he says and when I remind him what he said, he down talks you like you are an idiot. You'd be better off defending yourself.

Hired to resolve a business problem and she fumbled royally; just let it fester and the whole issue got worse. No plan of action, takes no positive action. Hides out, does not return calls or emails when you try to get an update on your case. Ms. Callaway does know how to send bills.

DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR 1 STAR TOO BUT THAT IS THE LEAST ONE CAN RATE! Mr. John Trexler – Very unprofessional! Does not care for client's time and urgency. Worst experience ever! I reached out to Mr. John Trexler's office multiple times and spoke to front desk and requested to take a message for me and as they informed me that the only way to reach out to him was to leave a voicemail. So, I indeed left a voicemail. Also, called the next 3 days to follow up and left a voicemail couple of times since 10/14 and until date waiting for help and yesterday, I get a response that he never got my voicemails and also by email he informed me that he is not available for next 2 weeks and finally today he has asked me to seek help from a different lawyer. Of course, he offered to setup a conference call on 10/25 and 10/26 to talk but when I requested to have a quick call as those dates are too far out, he did not even care reply. Instead in the last email he claims that I did not avail that opportunity, however I was waiting for him to accommodate my request to advance the appointment date and help out. My tenant vacated abruptly without paying rent and damaging the house. The issue is this lawyer is subscribed to MetLife (not many handling tenant problem cases) through my employer and there are not many that handle rental tenant issues. It is unfortunate that these type of unrespectful attorneys get a chance to participate in employer sponsored programs and able to capture huge customer base with great ratings online and when approached disrespect clients by not even having the basic courtesy to return a client's phone call. Avoid this stubborn attorney and he does not deserve to be rated highly. Possibly it is all rigged and he is writing his own reviews. I will look for another helpful attorney. Thanks.

Due to Jim not keeping up with our case I was forced to pay thousands of dollars. We were referred to Jim by family who is now ashamed to have known him. Even his firm verified with us he royally messed our case up and we could have had a very different out come. If you choose to use Jim, whom is a very kind man, please make sure you keep up with him. You will need to contact him constantly to remind him of things and keep him going. You can't assume he'll take care of something he said he'll look into. I completely recommend Ravid and associates just not Jim Brady!

What a Business Lawyer Can Do for You

A business lawyer provides critical legal guidance and support to entrepreneurs, startups, and established businesses. Whether you are forming a new company, drafting contracts, or navigating complex regulations, a business attorney ensures you are legally protected and operating within the law. They can also help prevent legal disputes or represent you in negotiations, transactions, or lawsuits that arise during the course of business operations.

Business lawyers have expertise in areas such as business formation, contract law, intellectual property, employment law, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance. They ensure that your business is compliant with relevant laws and help mitigate risks that could threaten your company's success.

When Should I Hire a Business Lawyer?

Hiring a business lawyer is essential at various stages of business development, including:

  • Forming a business: When deciding on the best structure for your company (LLC, corporation, partnership, etc.), a lawyer can guide you through the registration and compliance process.
  • Drafting contracts: If you need contracts for employees, partners, suppliers, or clients, a lawyer ensures these documents are legally sound and in your best interest.
  • Mergers, acquisitions, or dissolutions: If you are buying, selling, or dissolving a company, legal counsel is critical to avoid costly mistakes.
  • Compliance and regulatory issues: A lawyer can help navigate complex regulations, particularly in industries like healthcare, finance, or tech.
  • Resolving disputes: Whether it's contract disagreements, intellectual property infringement, or employment issues, a business lawyer helps mediate, negotiate, or litigate on your behalf.

What Does a Business Lawyer Do?

Business lawyers provide a wide range of services that cater to different legal needs of a business. They can:

  • Help you choose the best legal structure for your business.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with employees, suppliers, customers, or business partners.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Advise on tax strategies to minimize your business's tax burden.
  • Assist with intellectual property protection, such as trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
  • Handle mergers, acquisitions, and business sales, ensuring all legal paperwork is in order.
  • Resolve disputes through negotiation, arbitration, or litigation.

How Are Business Lawyers Paid?

Business lawyers typically charge either by the hour or on a flat-fee basis, depending on the complexity of the work. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rates: The lawyer charges based on the time spent working on your case. Rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and location.
  • Flat fees: For certain tasks, such as incorporating a business or drafting a standard contract, a lawyer may offer a flat fee.
  • Retainer: Some businesses may hire a lawyer on retainer, paying a fixed amount each month to have ongoing access to legal services.

The payment structure is often discussed during an initial consultation so you can choose the one that best suits your business needs and budget.

How Much Does a Business Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a business lawyer depends on factors such as:

  • The complexity of the legal issue: More complex matters, like mergers or intellectual property disputes, typically cost more than routine tasks like contract drafting.
  • The lawyer's experience and location: More experienced lawyers or those in larger cities often charge higher fees.
  • The nature of the billing arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $150 to $1,000 or more, depending on the lawyer's expertise. Flat fees are usually available for simpler matters like forming an LLC or drafting a standard contract.

It's essential to discuss fee structures upfront to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Business Lawyer

Before hiring a business lawyer, ask the following questions during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with businesses like mine?
Find out if the lawyer has handled legal issues for companies in your industry.
  2. What services do you offer?
Ensure the lawyer can meet all your business's legal needs, from contract drafting to dispute resolution.
  3. What are your fees, and how do you bill?
Get clarity on how you'll be charged - whether by the hour, flat fee, or retainer.
  4. How do you handle conflicts of interest?
Ask how the lawyer ensures there is no conflict in representing your business.
  5. Can you provide references from other business clients?
Speaking with past clients will give you an idea of the lawyer's expertise and professionalism.
  6. Do you have experience in my specific industry?
Industry-specific knowledge can be crucial, especially in highly regulated fields like healthcare or finance.

How to Check the Credibility of a Business Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable business lawyer:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is in good standing and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for client reviews or testimonials: Online reviews, testimonials, or word of mouth from other business owners can provide insight into the lawyer's reliability and effectiveness.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should have satisfied clients who can vouch for their services.
  • Check professional memberships: Membership in respected legal organizations (such as the American Bar Association or a local business lawyer association) can signal credibility.
  • Review their website and professional profile: A well-established lawyer typically has a professional website showcasing their areas of expertise, credentials, and case success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a business lawyer, prepare the following:

  • A description of your business and its structure: This will help the lawyer understand your legal needs.
  • Any current contracts or agreements: If you're seeking contract advice, bring copies of existing contracts.
  • A list of legal issues or concerns: Be ready to discuss any potential legal challenges, such as regulatory compliance, disputes, or transactions.
  • Financial documents: If applicable, bring financial records related to the legal matter you're seeking help with.
  • Questions about fees and billing: Ensure you understand the lawyer’s payment structure and fees upfront.

By preparing these materials, you can ensure that your first meeting with a business lawyer is productive and informative.
