Current working with Ethan and his team and very happy with the progress. Custody cases/arrangements can be very stressful and his team has been very communicative and supportive. I can reach out to them anytime and receive a timely response - something that is super important to me. Things can come up at any time and having a team that can provide rapid assistance is critical. I highly recommend Bay Area Family Law Center to anyone looking for top tier support and guidance!

We moved from New York to California last year and have been looking for an Estate planning attorney to update our plan. We interviewed a few, and finally met Ms. Joan Grimes through a recommendation. She is highly intelligent, can sift through huge documents at great speed and can quickly identify key points. We were struck by her efficiency, energy, and capacity to get to the heart of the matter and prescribe practical solutions. She is very current with the law, and makes suggestions in the context of potential changes in estate laws. Moreover, she is warm and caring. Another interesting side of Joan is that she is the go-to person for specialists, doctors, bakeries, bistros - Google in human form! It has been such a pleasure to meet her and more importantly, to do business with her. Kala and Vembar K Ranganathan, Walnut Creek, CA 94595.

I’d strongly suggest that you take your business somewhere else when I called on August 20 the lady was very rude and did not inform me or help me at all on how the process works with working with an attorney. This creates a very bad reputation for this business and they have, no professionalism whatsoever strongly suggest that you work with a different attorney regarding your real estate legal issues .

We had a very enriching experience working with Kyla Hale to help us w setting up an estate plan for our family. Kyla is very knowledgeable, professional, organized, and very pleasant to work with. She guided us through a complicated process that we were not capable of handling ourselves, she took time explaining and helping us understand important details. She is easily accessible and always responds promptly when we had questions. Highly recommend her!

I spoke to attorney Tyler Smith around October 17, 2023 and Tyler agreed to represent me in an ongoing lawsuit. I was prepared to execute a retainer agreement and pay a $10,000 initial retainer fee. I told Tyler I would call him the following week to set up an appointment to complete the paperwork. The following week I called and emailed Tyler, but he did not get back to me. Literally at the last possible moment he breached his oral agreement and refused to represent me. I'm going to file a State Bar complaint. This is outrageous!¹

I cannot recommend Heisler Rosenfeld LLP enough. The firm came highly recommended when my husband and I were looking to set-up our will and trust and after working with them we couldn't help but sing their praises as well, in fact, we immediately recommended them to my parents. Not only were they thorough and extremely detail oriented, they were also patient and incredibly caring. We truly felt like we were working with family. They communicated every step of the way and we left feeling that every one of our questions was answered throughly. Had we known it would have been such an easy and enjoyable process, we would have definitely done this sooner. Thank you Rachel and Lara for all of your help. I know my parents loved you as well.

Elliott established a non-revocable trust for me prior to my marriage. It was tricky, since I'll be recieving funds from my mother's trust when she dies. Elliott guided me in the process of deciding which beneficiaries to declare and how to divide the trust's assets and income. He was quite willing to include language I originated in that regard. He handled all the notifications to the various title companies and financial institutions I deal with, so that the trust formally owns or is beneficiary to my assets. Elliott charged very a competitive rate. Also, he worked in a timely fashion, seeing me within a week of my initial inquiry, and the whole business was complete within a month. I am relieved to have provided for my wife and heirs with so little trouble. I would recommend Elliott to anyone in his immediate area for estate planning.

I contacted Mr. Hughey through a trusted friend. I am a property owner in San Francisco with several millions of dollars in real estate holdings. Despite the couple of reviews that I have seen here saying that Harmond is not good with communication, I found just the opposite to be true. He communicated with me and my staff promptly by either email, text, fax or phone. I found him very responsive and knowledgeable as to real estate law and to detailed litigation. I cannot understand how anyone could say a bad word against him unless they are inexperienced with dealing with busy attorneys, especially one's with partial disabilities. My Father had back problems like Harmond's, so I am familiar with the challenges this adds to performance, not that I ever noticed other than he was limited in the amount of my files he could carry at some times. I support strongly any professional who can perform above-average work and juggle their own physical limitations. Beyond real estate, too, I referred him to a few of my friends who had business and contract issues in Silicon Valley and they reported back to me that his advice, review and negotiation skills were without merit. He also charged me a very competitive hourly rate for his work. He has a very diverse background and a litany of stories from his years of practice. This man saved me hundreds of thousands of dollars with his expertise and his skill. I'm sold on him as an A+ attorney who started off his career at one of the largest firms in the state before opening his own practice. I only wish I knew more attorneys like him.

Geoffrey Steele was hired by my scumbag aunt and sister to handle conservatorship of my mother who has really bad dementia. After emptying her bank account and sticking her in the first nursing home available they all thought the best thing for my poor dying mother was to not allow me to speak to her or visit her. I called him repeatedly for weeks, only to get the runaround. Now she has moved out of state away from everything and everyone she’s ever known or loved. He lied to my face repeatedly. If you’re looking to screw the elderly out of money, this is your guy!

I hired Geoffrey Steele to help me with the absolute worst condo association co owners. It's a 2-unit association in a high-end neighborhood in San Francisco and the other unit was bought by the worst possible neighbors ever--never paid their bills, took money from the reserve account for personal expenses, constantly left trash all over porch and yard, had father and son drumsets in the bedroom, and so much more. They could care less about the CC&Rs, and I hired Mr Steele to correct this. He was steadfast, insistent, and persuasive. Few lawyers would have been able to get through to these people--even with threats of legal action (hadn't worked before) or appeals to common decency (hadn't worked either). Mr Steele did. He has a keen understanding of real estate/condo association law, steel-trap recollection of details, direct and forceful manner, and supportive and understanding interactions with the client. I'd always be glad he is on my side and not the opposite!

After reading such glowing reviews we engaged Silverman’s firm. They sounded great on our initial call. It shouldn’t became a parent that their timeline was their timeline and my impression was, since fees are court mandated, they were not going out of their way if something different was required. We found members of their staff to be arrogant and haughty. We were told it would take weeks and even months before appointments and items could be addressed. After terminating our relationship and engaging our new lawyer within days we had necessary appointments and issues had been resolved. The impression we had was Silverman’s firm only wanted to do the bare minimum And anything extra we felt like we were demanding or that they were being put upon. They knew our circumstances from the beginning and they were not that extraordinary in our opinion and when we engage. Bottom line, in my opinion, I would not recommend them for anything other than a very , bread and butter probate and would not expect the best or fastest service Without a certain amount of attitude to accompany it!

We hired Robert Silverman to handle our Estate Planning from a friend's recommendation. Mr. Silverman took the time to get to know us and then fully explained what we did (and did not) need. He offered us a flat rate for end to end Trust creation. His staff was courteous and totally on top of our work. The output was a comprehensive document based on our needs and his expertise. Estate planning is an emotional and financial process. Mr. Silverman made it painless. What a sense of relief we have!

Eugene Chiarelli told us initially that he felt he "may" be able to resolve our case within the initial retainer of $5000. However after 3 months and over $15,500 spent, all we received is contact information on the opposing lawyer with zero resolution. We had to fire Eugene as it became clear that we were being taken advantage of. Eugene knew exactly how to "work" our case slowly and milk it for all he could. I have persoanlly gained more ground in 1 month with the opposing attorney then Eugene did in 3 months time.

Mr. Bergquist was retained at a crucial and desperate time and with very real hardship. He took my case with the promise of urgency, yet filed my paperwork in the incorrect jurisdiction (wrong Court) and failed to take swift and firm action as promised. I can quote him as apologizing for leaving me "on the back burner" when in fact he made clear and upfront promises to be strong and forceful in my matter. His apathy and lack of follow through caused me the loss of all joint assets after a 26 year (dependent income spouse) marriage, created protracted hardship and extreme stress resulting in never before experienced health problems. He blatantly went back on his word to keep communication with opposing counsel open and aboveboard by taking a conference in the Judge's private chambers thus excluding me from knowing what his disclosures and promises to the opposition were. The end result I was forced to go to trial after removing him from the case with no representation because he could not produce a settlement (I was willing to walk with next to nothing to avoid the stress and upheaval of a trial) and ended up with less than nothing due to debt and co-responsibility of my ex's 6 year tax evasion penalties. This attorney cannot be trusted and has no qualms or conscience of wreaking havoc on your case. My "case" is my life as I knew it or will ever know it moving forward, and the present and future stability and life of my children - Mr. Bergquist undermined my position and ultimately stole through his actions (or lack of).

Excessive attorney fees of $10,000 in addition to retainer fees of $2,500, and deposition transcript cost of $576.09 for a total of $13,076.09 + additional $18,000 requested to take the case to trial. I sought legal counsel for an eviction in July of 2019 for a cost of $2,500. Two weeks later in August of 2019, Robert A. Miller demanded an additional $5000 to further represent me. Amidst my major depression (documented diagnosis) from an overwhelming amount of grief (grandfather passed away in April 2018, father passed away in June 2018, and workplace mentor passed away in August 2018) and being on a new anti-anxiety medication (trazodone), I mistakenly gave Robert A. Miller $10,000 instead of $5,000. At which point attorney Robert A. Miller exclaimed, “We charge this much $10,000 for an unlawful detainer case?” Even with this admission, Robert A. Miller (then employed by David M. Sternberg law firm) greedily took the check without hesitation instead of honestly advising me of my error. In September of 2019, they set up a useless deposition (not a normal practice in landlord-tenant disputes) where I had to pay for the transcript (after giving Robert A. Miller $12,500). In the same month, they requested an additional $18,000 to further represent me when they could not pressure me to accept an informal resolution of moving out at the end of October 2019. This would essentially give me 30 days to find a new rental, a resolution that I could have accomplished myself. If Robert A. Miller did not want to represent me in court, then do not take my additional $10,000. During a break at the deposition, I was going through an eviction law textbook and turning the pages, Robert A. Miller forcefully grabbed the book from my hands and raised his voice to yell, "Stop!" I was already crying because the settlement was horrifying and my counsel whom I paid for was yelling at me. I had to seek new counsel immediately. The opposing counsel Richard Beckman, two other UD attorneys (Dennis Phillips and Jeffrey Carter), my own counsel Wendy McNabb all advised me to seek attorney fee arbitration. Attorney Richard Beckman, the opposing counsel, stated in open court during the trial that he would never want to smear a fellow colleague, but $13,000.00 is unheard of for an eviction. Additionally, Richmond Superior Court Commissioner Jennifer Lee (now a Martinez Superior Court Judge) expressed great discontent upon hearing the $13,000 amount that was paid for a simple retaliatory eviction. Judge Jennifer Lee also asked for the name of my previous counsel and I replied, "Robert A. Miller of the David M. Sternberg law firm." I was billed for discovery which did not produce any new evidence to show for time spent. I was billed for the deposition. I was billed for emails and phone calls for hours at a time. The emails were never more than one sentence or a paragraph and that was an hour. I had to personally print out over 100 pages of exhibits to be used for the deposition and trial. Kelsey, the paralegal of Robert A. Miller and David M. Sternberg filed and transcribed my dictation for discovery responses all the documents yet Robert A. Miller billed me for her work at his rate of $350.00 - $495.00 per hour instead of the paralegal rate of $100.00 per hour. I had to take three days off from work. The first day was when Robert A. Miller recorded my statement of what happened in order to draft a response to the unlawful detainer filed against me. I had to sit there the whole day while his paralegal Kelsey Ibarolla drafted the response from Robert A. Miller's tape recorder. The second day was to go discuss the case and that consisted mainly of my sitting and waiting in a room. I even had time to talk to my therapist, my union, and my friends in three separation conversations. Nothing came out of this second day. The third day was an unnecessary deposition. Near the end of the deposition, I was deciding how to proceed and asked Robert A. Miller what were the outc

What a Business Lawyer Can Do for You

A business lawyer provides critical legal guidance and support to entrepreneurs, startups, and established businesses. Whether you are forming a new company, drafting contracts, or navigating complex regulations, a business attorney ensures you are legally protected and operating within the law. They can also help prevent legal disputes or represent you in negotiations, transactions, or lawsuits that arise during the course of business operations.

Business lawyers have expertise in areas such as business formation, contract law, intellectual property, employment law, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance. They ensure that your business is compliant with relevant laws and help mitigate risks that could threaten your company's success.

When Should I Hire a Business Lawyer?

Hiring a business lawyer is essential at various stages of business development, including:

  • Forming a business: When deciding on the best structure for your company (LLC, corporation, partnership, etc.), a lawyer can guide you through the registration and compliance process.
  • Drafting contracts: If you need contracts for employees, partners, suppliers, or clients, a lawyer ensures these documents are legally sound and in your best interest.
  • Mergers, acquisitions, or dissolutions: If you are buying, selling, or dissolving a company, legal counsel is critical to avoid costly mistakes.
  • Compliance and regulatory issues: A lawyer can help navigate complex regulations, particularly in industries like healthcare, finance, or tech.
  • Resolving disputes: Whether it's contract disagreements, intellectual property infringement, or employment issues, a business lawyer helps mediate, negotiate, or litigate on your behalf.

What Does a Business Lawyer Do?

Business lawyers provide a wide range of services that cater to different legal needs of a business. They can:

  • Help you choose the best legal structure for your business.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with employees, suppliers, customers, or business partners.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Advise on tax strategies to minimize your business's tax burden.
  • Assist with intellectual property protection, such as trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
  • Handle mergers, acquisitions, and business sales, ensuring all legal paperwork is in order.
  • Resolve disputes through negotiation, arbitration, or litigation.

How Are Business Lawyers Paid?

Business lawyers typically charge either by the hour or on a flat-fee basis, depending on the complexity of the work. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rates: The lawyer charges based on the time spent working on your case. Rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and location.
  • Flat fees: For certain tasks, such as incorporating a business or drafting a standard contract, a lawyer may offer a flat fee.
  • Retainer: Some businesses may hire a lawyer on retainer, paying a fixed amount each month to have ongoing access to legal services.

The payment structure is often discussed during an initial consultation so you can choose the one that best suits your business needs and budget.

How Much Does a Business Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a business lawyer depends on factors such as:

  • The complexity of the legal issue: More complex matters, like mergers or intellectual property disputes, typically cost more than routine tasks like contract drafting.
  • The lawyer's experience and location: More experienced lawyers or those in larger cities often charge higher fees.
  • The nature of the billing arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $150 to $1,000 or more, depending on the lawyer's expertise. Flat fees are usually available for simpler matters like forming an LLC or drafting a standard contract.

It's essential to discuss fee structures upfront to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Business Lawyer

Before hiring a business lawyer, ask the following questions during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with businesses like mine?
Find out if the lawyer has handled legal issues for companies in your industry.
  2. What services do you offer?
Ensure the lawyer can meet all your business's legal needs, from contract drafting to dispute resolution.
  3. What are your fees, and how do you bill?
Get clarity on how you'll be charged - whether by the hour, flat fee, or retainer.
  4. How do you handle conflicts of interest?
Ask how the lawyer ensures there is no conflict in representing your business.
  5. Can you provide references from other business clients?
Speaking with past clients will give you an idea of the lawyer's expertise and professionalism.
  6. Do you have experience in my specific industry?
Industry-specific knowledge can be crucial, especially in highly regulated fields like healthcare or finance.

How to Check the Credibility of a Business Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable business lawyer:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is in good standing and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for client reviews or testimonials: Online reviews, testimonials, or word of mouth from other business owners can provide insight into the lawyer's reliability and effectiveness.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should have satisfied clients who can vouch for their services.
  • Check professional memberships: Membership in respected legal organizations (such as the American Bar Association or a local business lawyer association) can signal credibility.
  • Review their website and professional profile: A well-established lawyer typically has a professional website showcasing their areas of expertise, credentials, and case success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a business lawyer, prepare the following:

  • A description of your business and its structure: This will help the lawyer understand your legal needs.
  • Any current contracts or agreements: If you're seeking contract advice, bring copies of existing contracts.
  • A list of legal issues or concerns: Be ready to discuss any potential legal challenges, such as regulatory compliance, disputes, or transactions.
  • Financial documents: If applicable, bring financial records related to the legal matter you're seeking help with.
  • Questions about fees and billing: Ensure you understand the lawyer’s payment structure and fees upfront.

By preparing these materials, you can ensure that your first meeting with a business lawyer is productive and informative.
