I hired Attorney Dorsam some years ago for a new paternity/child support case. As other reviewers have noted, I chose attorney Dorsam because of her credentials as a guardian ad litem and because I wanted a smaller office vs a larger firm. When I hired attorney Dorsam I believe the office consisted of Attorney Dorsam, her legal secretary, and her paralegal. She was fine during the consultation and the initial filing seemed fair. Once she got in contact with the opposing attorney she became completely unresponsive. I would call her office and she or her paralegal would not return call the call. She would forward documents to me from opposing counsel with no guidance and in some cases unopened. While her hourly rate was reasonable she will grossly overbill as other reviewers have stated. My ex told me that the opposing counsel and Rhea Dorsam were good friends so I just assumed that was the reason but it appears that other reviewers have also had the same experience. My experience with every attorney reviewed on Avvo so far has been excellent. Unfortunately, Avvo reviews were not prevalent when I hired her. Her rate may seem attractive but I would not recommend hiring Attorney Dorsam.

Rhea was my attorney. She was outrageously expensive. She ruined my family. She picked sides in my divorce and did all She could to distance my children from me. Rhea makes judgement calls that are not grounded in evidence. If you use Rhea Dorsam as your attorney you will end up poor and heartbroken. I really wish I could rate her the zero rating she deserves.

Rhea was my attorney for almost an entire year. It was the most frustrating year on my life. Rhea never informed me that I could ask for a 215 evaluation for my prescription drug addicted spouse. She did not put in an order for child support. Rhea never attempted to obtain my ex's mandatory financial disclosure statement. She had me waiving my right to financial disclosure and would not change it even though I asked her repeatedly. She had the wrong addresses and cars in the initial agreement as well. Rhea rarely would return calls and when she did, she would bill me $75 for a three minute conversation. The final straw came when she made changes to the marital settlement agreement without my consent or knowledge. I retained another attorney that finalized the divorce in only 10 weeks. I choose Rhea because she is a guardian ad litem and thought she would have our best interests at heart. I'm posting this review as a public service. I wish Ms. Dorsam the best, but I can not recommend her as a divorce attorney.

In my opinion, Gail is a threat to the safety of children. Based on the overwhelming number of reviews saying the same, I am sharing how to report her conduct. It is easy to file a report with both regulatory boards/commissions. Use the link below if you have used her in the capacity as a Psychologist: https://idfpr.illinois.gov/admin/dpr/complaint.html Select “Professional Regulation” and fill out the information in the form. Use the link below if you have used her in the capacity as an Attorney: https://www.iardc.org/Files/Request_For__Investigation.pdf In my opinion Gail is a danger to children and families. In my opinion, she puts children at risk of serious harm. In my opinion she must be stopped.

We used Gail for divorce mediation. She was late for every appointment. She clearly hadn't ever review anything prior to our meetings and then never sent us our final documents. She was supposed to connect us with a lawyer at the end who 'she works with' to finalize and file our case, she did not do that, she completely disappeared once our last payment was sent. I called and emailed many times and no one responded. She was slow during meetings and wasn't much help with any questions we had. If it hadn't been during a pandemic we would have changed mediator. Ours was a simple divorce, I would hate someone in the middle of a stressful divorce to have to deal with this unprofessionalism on top of that.

This women will continue to try to convince you that abuse of your children is okay. She as a mandated reporter will hide abuse in order to assure she will receive a paycheck from you as long as possible. She will make excuses for the abuser and lie to Judges/Child representatives/DCFS, because if the children get removed from the abusive home she loses you as a client. Please make sure to report this woman to the state of Illinois if anything like this has happened to you. A hospital Doctor that had to care for our children said that Dr. Gail Petrich’s actions are “disgusting and she should be ashamed of herself”. We cannot let people like Dr. Gail Petrich continue to practice.

She was fairly knowledgeable on divorce law, but did not send opposing counsel our settlement offers. She was not very well organized and became harder and harder to contact and get a response from her. Did not receive my first bill until about 45 days after I retained her and I was way over my retainer at that point.

Did not communicate, rarely answered calls , did not have details of my case correct when we were before the judge, very rude, accepted payments then said she never agreed to them and wanted to be paid in full or she would not go to court for me. Court was in 5 days. When I did manage to meet with her she didn't know why I was there and said I needed to spoon feed her. Overall do not hire her , you will end up in debt and wondering if she presented your case or someone elses to the judge.

This attorney is horrible. I hired her to represent me in a divorce case against my convicted child abusing (now ex) husband. Though her incompetencies she allowed and advised me to sign a Parenting Agreement to award him custody. Like the previous review - just stay away from her. Do your research and get recommendations for a good attorney. I hired a new attorney an am now on damage control to get my children back. This is a mother's worse nightmare and Ms. Pabst made it happen.

I had hired Julie Pabst for my divorce case and she was doing what my opposite lawyer telling her to do. Also she was telling my opposite lawyer that what she will tell to the judge. She has damaged my case and charged me thousands of dolllars and I had to get rid of her and hired another lawyer and I had to start over my case. I have been throuh several lawyers in different fields for my friends and family members but Julie Pabst the worst lawyer I ever experienced. Just stay away from her.

Showed up ninety minutes late for first court appearance because she booked two clients at the same time in different courthouses. Lost my three letters of office because she lost her mail. Was confused during court appearances and had to repeatedly ask questions from other attorneys and court staff and was disrespectful to the court recorder who questioned her on something. Accused me of not informing her of information she needed but denied the fact that I had called numerous times and left messages with her secretary and then accused me of being insensitive because she was sick with the flu and couldn’t respond to my calls. Showed up to court and complained the entire time how sick she was. Billed me for two thirds of the entire cost she had quoted me after eight weeks of representation. She had originally agreed to represent me for what she anticipated to take three years. When I questioned her about all of the mistakes she made, her response was “I told you I’ve never done this before” She took advantage of me, a grieving, emotionally distraught widow, one month after losing my spouse. Several other complaints... too many to list...

Jennifer should NEVER be in FAMILY law. She is easily paid and foolishly easy. She does MORE DAMAGE to a child. She is close minded about PARENT ALIENATING. She always gets it wrong. As long as you have a big house and look good on Facebook. That is where the most abused children come from. Jennifer speak with the child away from parents. Jennifer be open minded to a bigger picture and for the love of god do not repeat what the child is telling you. As you know now it caused him more abuse at the big house. He suffers from PTSD. She abused him and you with her pictures and name drops. Now you know. She divorced him as soon as she could not play mind control games. He is back HOME safe and happy WITHOUT your help!!

Mr. Wrigley handled my divorce. He did not address the issue of college tuition and when I questioned the decision I was told we would need to go back to court when my daughter reached college age. She was 16 at the time of the divorce. I have talked to other people who have very young children and this was still addressed in their settlement. I was billed for numerous hours every time our case was scheduled for court even when it was cancelled. It was as if he had to start preparing from scratch each time court dates were cancelled. I can understand the need to review the case, but not the number of hours I was billed each and every time. I was charged from the minute I saw him before court until the end of the appearance although he left for long periods of time to appear in other courtrooms for other clients during that time. I felt overbilled by this attorney.

I was referred to her through an acquaintance. Initially speaking to her over the phone she seemed like she knew family law through and through and that she would greatly help in my case. I was requested to come in at meet with her. I took the day off work came into the office at the time requested of 11am. although I was 20 minutes early, so I arrived at 10:40. At 11:35 I ask the receptionist if she was with another client. The receptionist stated that she was not in the office he had infact emailed her but got no response and he is not sure where she is at and if I had her phone number to contact her. I left her a voicemail stating the time I got there and if she would be in the office shortly. She never responded. At 12:15pm I left. Once getting ahold of my acquaintance a couple hours later and letting her know what happened she contacted Gemma. Gemma stated that I was early and that she told me she had a trial that day and could see me sometime after 11. Now she did tell me she had a trial that day but would be in the office at 11 and for me to stop by at 11. So she lied. She also stated that I would need to get in contact with her and schedule another time because I came early and she didn’t get in the office until 12:15 which is inaccurate because I left out of the office waiting to get down to the lobby at 12:15. She didn’t have the professionalism to return my call at all. Needless to say clearly communication with her is an issue and she would not be a great match for me. Before even going in to her office I researched her here. I saw the misconduct on her record and wanted to inquire about what does that mean as I was possibly going to enter in a business relationship with her. Given her attitude, lack of professionalism and communication there is no telling of what transpired. In Hines sight some of these lawyers have lost touch with reality. These clients have lives, jobs and limited time as well. One should not have to chase down a lawyer or be given the run around. I’m more so thankful I was able to see the cracks in her work ethic before hiring her.

DO NOT HIRE THIS LAW FIRM—A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME, MONEY, AND ENERGY! If I could give zero stars, I would. I spent nearly $18,000 with this firm from April to early October, only to receive zero progress, constant runarounds, and increased stress. They mislead you from the start—promising one attorney will handle your case, only to pass you off to a completely inexperienced junior associate who has no idea what they’re doing. This firm lacks basic professionalism. Expect constant delays, forgotten documents, and endless errors—grammar mistakes on legal documents, overlooked details, and updates that cost you money but bring you no closer to a resolution. They refuse to meet in person, treat you like just another invoice, and only respond quickly when they’re sending you their monthly bill. Their promises? Empty. Their results? Nonexistent. Their level of care? Zero. Save yourself the frustration and find a law firm that actually values its clients—because this one certainly doesn’t.

I wouldn’t recommend her to my worse enemy!! She was appointed by the court to represent our child which I’m not even sure exactly what she even got paid for, besides a couple visits nothing else was done. She will however harass you for money, charged $75 for a 3 min phone call once , pretend like she had appointments scheduled when didn’t so she can stack on extra fees per her negligence. Threatened to take our case to trial like we weren’t aware of that being unlawful because she didn’t get payment at her convenience. And that’s not even all! She’s a horrible person and horrible Attorney her best interest is Greed!! I highly would not recommend I would give no stars if I could!! If I had the time and patience I would sue her for lack of doing her job!

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
