I consulted Alex re a family matter, and he was unprofessional, in a rush, and disrespectful. Family matters are sensitive topics, and to have some lawyer -- whom you'd like to hire! -- rudely downplaying your concerns is far from the type of lawyer you should retain. Don't waste your time. I've since hired another lawyer and my concerns have been addressed.

Alex and his team are the best attorneys I have ever worked with. Alex is straight forward, no nonsense, and realistic. He and his team explain everything and leave no stone unturned. I got referred to Alex after spending a year and a half with a fraudulent attorney, who got nothing done and was milking me for money. Alex and his team came in fixed the mess my former attorney left. They even got better result than we we going after. Alex was available and invested in my outcome throughout the whole process. Any time I would email him he responded swiftly. My ex works for the most powerful attorneys in Los Angeles so having someone I could trust was very important. I could not have gone through this process without Alex. I am very grateful to have met him!

My Jessner was incredibly professional, asstute and effective as an attorney for my ex-husband. I saw the review my ex wrote and think it's only fair that I respond also. My ex trashes people whom he does not want to pay, he's a bully and please do not judge Mr. Jessner on the 2 star review; at the time he was representing my ex, I'd wished Mr. Jessner were MY attorney. I hope this site takes down the review by my ex, Mr Jessner in no way deserves anything but praise, I know what's it's like to be trashed for no reason, there was NO reason for that review.

Incredibly smart, patient, and hard working. Helped me immensely through a very difficult time. Very good in court and in pleadings. A strong advocate but doesn't fight just for the sake of fighting.

Greg is a good person who was used as a mop by opposing counsel. He had a hard time handing my lying ex's lying attorney and froze in court and in communication with opposing counsel. He does not have the ability to negotiate a settlement with difficult, high conflict divorce. He also missed court deadlines and wanted us to go easy on the ex because she was female - even though she and her attorney pulled every dirty trick possible. He was in over his head, had no idea what to do and did not take the legal recourse needed to get important information. I found another attorney who led well and was able to handle the ex and her counsel well.

My husband used Nancy during his divorce with his ex. Nancy did a great job keeping costs as minimal as possible (still high but she tried to be reasonable). She communicated to his satisfaction and gave him very logical advice. She explained his options with detail and explained the differences in cost per option. Although his ex got quite a bit, Nancy made sure that the ex didn't "rip him a new one" like she was trying.

I’m writing this post in case it could save someone from having a similar experience that I had as a former employee. In 2018 I worked for Michael Whitmarsh as a legal assistant, and it was the worst work experience I have ever had in my life. Working under Michael Whitmarsh made me realize the importance of working in a respectful, communicative and healthy environment for my quality of life. The sheer disrespect and aggression that Michael Whitmarsh displayed towards me on the regular deeply affected me during my time there and thereafter. I have always had positive relationships with my employers and peers, and to this day, Michael Whitmarsh is the only employer I’ve ever had that left me with almost exclusively negative memories. I’m grateful that I mustered the courage to quit when I did and the lesson I learned to never let anyone treat me like that again.

Horrible service. Felt like he was on my husbands side the whole time. Wasted $5000 on nothing. I had to keep calling to see what was happening with my case. Could not confine in him. Charged me for ridiculous work, calls and emails. I ended up going back with my husband and stopped the divorce/case. I suggest a real lawyer. My husbands, Gille Kaye Law Group, PC . Pasadena CA. Great people nice and actually wanna do the work and help. They even gave back my husband his half deposit back $2,700. Unlike these people rip off, there only in it for the money.

I was referred to Michael in 2014 by my business lawyer when my wife of six years filed for divorce, demanded half of my business and an incredible amount of spousal support. I did not have a prenup. My divorce wrapped up at the end of 2015, and Michael recently circled back to ask for a review of my experience working with him. I told him that I would be happy to because of how much he helped me. The best part about hiring Michael to do my divorce was that he accurately predicted how long the entire process would take, how much I would end up having to pay my ex in spousal support, and how much the whole divorce would cost. I didn't want to hear it, but I'm glad that he told me straight. I am a small business owner. I have 5 employees who I've had for years, and Michael knew an incredible amount about business bookkeeping and accounting that saved me a lot of grief. Most of all, he calmed me down when my ex-spouse threatened my business or made unreasonable demands. If it had not been for Michael, I'm not sure that my business would have survived the divorce. Thanks again, Michael.

I went in and out of the courts all by myself with no luck for 2 years. Served her several times and even though the mother never showed up, things didn’t change. They FINALLY helped me get custody but by the time I got it, it was too late. Mother took my daughter who knows where. Detectives are still looking for them. It’s been over 14 years since I have seen her. The family court system is broken, you really DO need someone by your side with experience navigating it. I only wish I knew about them and called earlier. Maybe I could have gotten custody before she disappeared. And they did it all for free.

As if it wasn't hard already being a victim of domestic violence, there Levitt & Quinn is to make it an even more grueling process. I applied for help over a month prior to my final court hearing. After jumping through many hoops: 1) traveling to and applying directly at the office 2) submitting additional paperwork that took much effort to collect detail behind 3) several delays in correspondence from L&Q and 4) needing to spend money on requested documentation, I wasn't able to even land a consultation. They were misleading with hope throughout the process. They could've told me "we are unable to help at this time," which would've sufficed instead of wasting the time and energy of someone who is already suffering.

Do not hire this firm. They turn my divorce into a blood bath. They lied and fabricated at evidence and made my ex wife’s life and misery for no reason. They caused me to go broke and my ex-wife as well. All they care about is profits profits profits. They don’t care about what’s in the best interest of the family. They don’t care about what’s in the best interest of the children. All they care about is profits profits profits. I have no idea why the other two named partners want to be associated with this type of abuse of lawyers behaving bad. Especially Ksenya (Gity) Kogan and Avi Lecy - watch out

Avi and his team are outstanding attorneys. Avi was great from the moment I met him. I knew he would have my children’s best interest at heart and that he would work hard for me. He is very knowledgeable and is amazing in Court. I really needed a strategy, and the strategy he and his team came up with paid off in my case. I cannot thank Avi and his team enough and recommend them without any reservations. Avi and his team are truly the best of the best out there.

SIMPLY THE BEST FAMILY LAW FIRM!!! I have worked with Trabolsi Levy Gabbard LLP, in particular Avi Levy, from the very beginning of one of the worst times in my life-divorce. Avi was not only an advisor in my legal matter but a shoulder to lean on and provided me with the most accurate information as it relates to my legal matter. He was honest, upfront, appropriately aggressive when necessary, hard working, available when needed, quickly responds, treated me as more than a client, comforting, expert in knowing and understanding the law, very highly regarded by his colleagues, and goes above and beyond the “call of duty.” His knowledge and confidence put my mind at ease at a time when it was very needed. Avi’s reputation in and around the family law community is unsurpassed. From the time i entered this period of my life, I realized that when i made my first court appearance and speaking to other family law attorneys that Avi was at the “top of his game.” Furthermore, Mr. Levy, holds many accolades within his expertise and has proven in front of his colleagues, judges, etc to lead the way in his line of work. In addition to the aforementioned, he leads California in legislating on Family law issues, which proves to me as a client that he is highly recommended by people in the family law community. The term that is used is,”He is a lawyer’s lawyer!!” Avi demonstrated professionalism in dealing with the various judges, attorneys, and other parties involved in my case. It is clear to me that he is highly respected by ALL individuals whether it be forensic accountants, judges, opposing counsel, appraisers, etc. It is apparent that when other people in different lines of work comment positively about your attorney, you realize the person you hired!! Lastly, Mr. Levy’s partners and associates have also provided the same service and level of confidence Avi has provided. Larisa, Jaimee, Nathan, Yael, and the entire staff at Trabolsi Levy Gabbard earned and proved that they are SIMPLY THE BEST FAMILY LAW FIRM in Los Angeles!!! I will continue to spread the word about this firm and continue to refer them business should someone i know who is looking for an EXEMPLARY family law firm.

This man is awful and his practice is unethical. He got a free 1000 from scamming my family. Didn’t even bother to look up my father’s case we literally paid him 1000 for him to see my father in person and demand more money. He did not look up his case or offer any type of consultation on how we can help my father. BEWARE of this awful unethical attorney that’s ok with scamming families out of their hard earned money.

Joel assisted me with my divorce and my violent ex trying to get his rights back. When Joel decided to take on my case it was based of an extensive consultation. This man is not looking to represent anybody just for the compensation. He is selective and genuinely invested once he decides to represent you. He made this painstaking process easier and I felt supported legally and as a mother protecting her children. Time went by (about a year) and he checked in on me and my kids. Passing the bar is one thing but having a heart and a passion for what you do is another.

No expert knowledge and Rip Client off Illegally Totally agree with the other reviewer, Leonard Garber has no clue what to do with my case as well. Typically when attorneys try to sell their services, they will propose their approach for the case. Leonard Garber says he has no idea what to do with the case, but would expect to get paid for his time even when he is doing nothing. He illegally conned the client into retaining him only then to intentionally get on the phone with the client doing nothing other than saying he doesn’t think he can handle the case. Then he charged the client for that time. He is not even supposed to get in retainment when he doesn’t want to take the case. The only way he did so is so as to charge the client illegally. It is hard to believe an attorney who has practiced for 40 years would have no clues of some basic case scenarios!

Diana has to be the worst attorney for men. If you just need motions filed, she is great. But to have her as representation I would RUN, she will misrepresent you, she gives the other side whatever they want. Diana is more combative with her client than she will with the opposing team. You can have all the documents in the world and prove that the other party is in contempt, perjury and showing you do not owe what they say you do she will not go up against it. It was like I was going against the state and her. SHE DOESN'T OR DO NOT WANT TO UNDERSTAND THAT SHE IS HANDLING PEOPLE LIVELY HOOD. But she will take your money like she did all she could do to represent you. Let's not forget she hides information from her own clients. But if you have extra money and would like to throw it away use them. Charles goes along with whatever as long as they are getting paid. PLEASE DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE RESPONSE THEY MAY POST TO SAY THEY NEVER REPRESENTED ME BECAUSE THEY DID, THEY JUST DONT WANT THE NEGATIVE REVIEW.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
