I had the privilege of working with Steffanie Kotik on a complex family law case, and I can’t recommend her enough. From the very start, she demonstrated a deep understanding of family law and offered strategic yet compassionate guidance that made a huge difference throughout the process. Steffanie wasn’t just thorough and diligent—she truly cared about my well-being and that of my family. What really stood out was her clear and consistent communication. She kept me updated regularly and was always available to answer any questions, no matter how small. This made a challenging time feel much more manageable. Steffanie’s ability to handle the complexities of my case with both professionalism and empathy played a big part in my case progression. Steffanie’s thoughtful and straightforward approach made sure I felt informed and prepared every step of the way. Her combination of empathy, directness, and tactical expertise is rare, and I’m incredibly grateful for her support. If you're looking for a lawyer who is not only highly competent but also genuinely cares about her clients, Steffanie Kotik is the one to call. Angie has represented me all 3x when my ex decided to be a jerk. She’s been upfront & honest about my choices and given great insight for which path would best protect me & my children. Her advice to bring in a guardian ad litem for my kids was spot on so we could get my children what they most needed. She’s thorough but balances that with not wasting time & thus not wasting my money which is much appreciated. She’s timely in communication both in response to my questions and in updating me as the case proceeded. She’s been my lawyer for over a decade & will continue to be my lawyer for years to come. Thanks for what you accomplished on the latest case!

Dan Rock was good about advising me on what to do about ADT Solar not completing my solar panel system install. Not very helpful with my attempt to get a suit going against them, though, and then proceeded to tell me that they are *not* on my employer's Met Life Legal Plan anymore, which is where I found them, and where I still see them listed.

I had a legal matter earlier this year in Omaha. I asked around and Joe Risko was a name that kept coming up. I hired him to take on my case. His rates were reasonable. He went above and beyond to get a conclusion to my case that I was very satisfied with. I would highly recommend Joe Risko should you need legal representation in the Omaha area.

James did exactly what I wanted a lawyer to do. I didn't want to be boiling in the pot with my ex, and all the problems she brings with her. He did all the footwork, and I actually had to do very little. He always got back to me within 24 hrs no matter what my question was. I was very nervous and unsure about what would happen to me, and my daughter during this process. But with the circumstances, and james as my attorney...I can honestly say...I WON

James isn’t lying when he says he specializes in representing men. Every time my ex-husband asked for something, James gave it to him, charged me for the paperwork changes, and eventually threatened that I would lose in court (he will promise to settle out of court, which is one of his “selling points”). Mr Adams allowed my ex and his counsel to destroy me financially, and then he told me I was overreacting. Find someone else - he was late, rude, and condescending after he secured his retainer.

I cannot stress enough how helpful, knowledgeable and efficient David Webb was in dealing with my estate matters after the death of my husband. We had a few complications and David explained everything to me in a manner which was easy to understand. He even gave me the statues to look up at home to familiar myself with how the law works in settling his estate. You won't go wrong in having the law firm of David R Webb handle your needs. I wish I can give All Stars in our Galaxy. I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the exceptional work of Philip, the divorce lawyer, and his paralegal, Wendi. They were truly instrumental in guiding me through a challenging divorce process. From the start, Philip's expertise and professionalism shone through. Despite having previously switched lawyers twice, Philip made me feel at ease during our first meeting, assuring me that my case was not only manageable but also had strong potential for success. His intelligence and legal acumen were evident throughout the entire process, and he consistently demonstrated a high level of competence in handling my case. Furthermore, Wendi's promptness in responding to emails and her meticulous attention to detail greatly contributed to the smooth progress of my case. The polite and respectful manner in which Philip interacted with his clients, including myself, further exemplifies his dedication to providing excellent service. I am genuinely grateful to Philip and Wendi for their invaluable assistance, and I highly recommend their services to anyone in need of a competent and professional divorce lawyer

If you want an overpriced dude who is aloof on deadlines, sits on important emails for weeks or months, doesn't take your concerns about your child's safety nor your concern for the other party's mental health seriously... well, this is your guy! (Don't take my word for it. Call and ask for his voicemail. His outgoing message will tell you all you need to know about his promptness) He received discovery request from opposing counsel and didn't send it until two months later, a full month after it was due back. Didn't wait on making sure to charge for it though! Sat on an important email about schooling decisions until 9:30 the night before the deadline. What did the opposing party argue in court? That I'm not involved in our child's school because I wasn't adding to the conversation, when I wasn't even aware of the email until three weeks after it was sent! Told him in our consultation there were serious concerns for mental health. Does he request mental health records in discovery after you continually express those concerns? Nope! After you express your discontent with that decision, does he file a second set of discovery? Yep, but after the deadline to compel — again, weeks later — so the other party didn't have to supply them. Don't ask for an apology though, lest you get an incredibly ironic lecture in "accountability". I'm sure he will comment on this reply with something similar. Maybe he will say you're uncooperative because you're upset with his lack of promptness. I'm sure his response to this review will be prompt though! Gotta keep up appearances, right? Maybe your kid(s) will get lucky and be worthy of the money you're paying him. Don't bet on it though.

After I filed my complaint for dissolution of marriage pro se, my husband retained a “fathers’ rights” attorney who quickly turned our case into high conflict litigation. Because I knew that I needed an excellent family law attorney to move forward, I called Mr. Philip Katz, a Martindale-Hubbell Preeminent Lawyer with an AV rating, the highest level of professional excellence, skills and integrity. Although I was a mess, Mr. Katz patiently listened my concerns and immediately started work on my case. Based on his vast experience and knowledge of how the judge might rule, Mr. Katz developed a legal argument that made it likely that the judge would rule in my favor. Opposing counsel came out swinging, but Mr. Katz, calm and persistent, presented the best legal argument and judge ruled in my favor. For these reasons, I highly recommend Mr. Philip Katz to anyone looking for an attorney to represent them in a high conflict case. In my opinion, he is a Rockstar Litigator.

Jerry court hearings are public information. So you saying Unfortunately, your review does not present an accurate or fair picture of this firm is a dang lie because everything stated about your firm in the review calling you guys a circus and how Darren Pekny was embarrassed by a guy who doesn’t have a law degree and all your firm is filled with are money hungry jokes, is a very accurate statement and review and anyone can look it up if they wanted to. I believe it even stated you would try to lie to get people not to believe the review but unfortunately it’s the truth. I know for a fact your firm is more crooked than what was even said and unfortunately that information will eventually get out. Go ahead Jerry go have Darren tell the court about this like he did last time!!!!News flash Jerry the court won’t care just like they didn’t the last time! If I’m telling the truth about things nothing can happen to me and no one will care!

This circus is definitely not the place to go for an attorney especially if it’s Darren Pekny! If you’re looking to get a pair of big floppy shoes or a big red nose this is the place to go! Ethics???? Not in this tent! Morals????? Forget about it!!!!! Win the case for their clients????? Not happening!!!!!! Lying and Trying to ruin someone's life that doesn't deserve it???? YEP!!!!! They will do that! Being corrupt and having no ethics????? That's their greatest trick!!!! I was not a client of this corrupt place but this firm lied and helped keep my daughter away from me when I didn't do anything I was blamed for. I got proof to show that. I’m not an attorney and I have done a better job in the courtroom than this clown named Darren! He tried to tell on me for things that I have said to him like what you are reading now, just because he knows he’s going to lose. He knows that no matter what the facts are the facts but will continue to lie just to get paid. Darren has no problem taking money from someone, knowing he won’t win a case against a guy who doesn’t have a law degree. If you want to laugh then Darren is your man because he is definitely one of the funniest jokes out there! If you want to be robbed of all your money this is your man as well! Don't forget your popcorn when you come to this circus! Darren seriously is a complete joke and you will lose a lot of money if you use this firm! They will reply to this to try to get people to not believe me but honestly if you retain this law firm you will be losing money so go find any other law firm out there! Here’s Darren at his best in the courtroom “well your honor I’m new to this case so” when in fact he’s been on the case for 6 months he just knew he looked dumb and then I put him in his place right in front of the judge! FACTS!

Lawyer fails to communicate or prepare for family law cases. Seems to be too focused on other things then providing clients with information they can use to make decisions. Fails to respond to questions if there is a response at all. Only when something is pertinent to her to know will she be better at communication and don't expect your questions to be answered if they are not on topic with what she wants. Be prepared to leave lots of messages on the phone.

Ms. Higgins represented us in a family law case. I cannot express our gratitude enough. She was always so honest with us about what was happening and what was to come. Emilee may have single handedly saved our family. Emilee always went out of her way to be in constant contact with us through every step of the case. Even when we were overly needy. Emilee went above and beyond the scope of attorney, she was true counsel. I would, and have, recommended Emilee to all my friends and family.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
