After a 25 year marriage, I didn’t know where to begin to find legal representation with the knowledge, professionalism, and support to guide me through the tribulations of divorce. I spent way more time and effort to select my divorce lawyer than I ever did to choose my (now ex) husband. I did extensive online research. I read tons of testimonials. I even listened to divorce podcasts and took notes.
On paper, Geraldine Hess stood out among the other divorce lawyers I considered because she is Fellow of the Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), and her practice is 100% focused on family law.
In practice, Geraldine Hess ended up being an advocate I could TRUST to help me navigate through one of the worst times in my life.
I liked working with Geraldine because she was always tactful and professional, but at the same time, she never sugar coated anything or tip toed around difficult things that needed to be said or done. I loved that she was so straightforward and honest, while also being fair and kind.
I also really appreciated how tough Geraldine was, both mentally and emotionally. I don’t mean that she was a junk yard bull dog with a spiked collar and a loud bark. I mean that nothing surprised her or shocked her or threw her off her game. If my husband had set himself on fire while on the witness stand, Geraldine would probably have to stifle a yawn.
Beyond that, Geraldine was organized, reliable, and responsive, as were her assistants. She ran a tight ship, and I knew that she would never let anything fall through the cracks.
During my divorce, I ended up needing a criminal lawyer and then a contract lawyer. Geraldine referred me to two excellent attorneys who were both trustworthy and excellent in their fields.
Geraldine Hess has my highest recommendation. I hope never to get divorced again, but if I did, I would call Geraldine right away.

The short version:
If you need a family law attorney, go to Geraldine. She is smart, dedicated, no nonsense (but still kind), will keep you well informed and quickly and fully responds to questions. Bottom line, she takes care of business and does so extremely efficiently.
The long (yet still shortened) version:
My spouse and I decided to get divorced and started off with the collaborative divorce process. As the collaborative process neared completion, my spouse terminated the collaborative process despite the advice of counsel and a mutual divorce coach.
Shortly after terminating the collaborative process, my spouse hired a new attorney and filed for divorce while making many false and vicious accusations along with unreasonable and upsetting requests to the court. I obtained a new family law attorney/law group and a very contentious process ensued. After many months, not much progress had been made and my attorneys were convinced that settling outside of court was not likely. My attorneys therefore significantly increased their retainer and informed me that they would have to withdraw from my case if I was unable to pay the new retainer. At this point I had amassed a significant amount of debt and could not afford the amount they requested. They withdrew from my case. I was at a complete loss for what to do. I was financially destroyed, the emotional stress of the past year and a half was taking its toll on me and I didn’t know where to turn.
Then I found Geraldine and retained her services. Almost immediately the tone of the process changed and I felt like progress was being made. Geraldine quickly got up to speed with my case and hit the ground running. She laid out the options and scenarios, explained what she was thinking and why and developed a strategy for moving forward. She kept me fully informed and answered any questions I had every step of the way. A few months after Geraldine came on board, my case was settled and with an outcome that was significantly better than what I was expecting and better than previous offers made to my spouse which had been turned down.
Having the unfortunate, and likely uncommon, experience of working with multiple family law attorneys, I can say that Geraldine is awesome at her job! She did much more for me than any prior attorney in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost.
I never write reviews. However, felt compelled to write one for Geraldine as 1) a way to acknowledge and thank her for a job very well done and 2) to hopefully help others out there who find themselves going through a divorce. It is not fun. It is not easy. However, having the right attorney makes a world of difference.

Geraldine became my lawyer in 1996. She attempted to settle my case, which involved child support, child custody, and property settlement, amicably. However, my former spouse made things extremely difficult. Geraldine recognized that we would need to change the strategy for my case, and she made the change seamlessly. She represented me well, which resulted in my being awarded primary custody of my children. She also ensured that I was able to maintain my retirement savings (my former spouse had depleted his after our separation, and he wanted half of mine). My former spouse took me to Court twice after our divorce to reduce the amount of child support he was paying. I retained Geraldine for both of those cases and found her to be just as thorough as she had been during my divorce. My case has been closed for some time now, but I still consult with Geraldine as needed. Geraldine is smart, meticulous, honest, knowledgeable, and accessible, and I strongly recommend her to anyone who needs a divorce attorney.

I witnessed Ms. Rakityanskaya in court where she won a completely hopeless case (not mine). I then went back to her years later for my own needs.
She knows my case to the letter, even better that I know it myself. She makes preparation for document submissions and other things look effortless. I don't feel swamped and I always know that she has it under control.

I hired Keith based on his online reviews. Initially, I was impressed with his commitment. However, as time progressed, I encountered several challenges that affected my experience negatively. Keith often seemed overwhelmed with his caseload, which might have contributed to the issues we faced.
During our interactions, Keith occasionally displayed a temper, which was unexpected. He also provided me with unclear explanations regarding the financial aspects of my case, specifically how funds were being allocated, which led to rapid depletion of the resources without much progress. While I understand that managing multiple cases can be demanding, the level of service I received did not meet my expectations.
In court, I felt that the aggressive approach I anticipated from our consultations did not materialize as effectively as hoped, which was surprising given his demeanor in person. Unfortunately, the outcome of my case was not favorable, and the legal fees accumulated quickly with what seemed like limited action taken on my behalf.
This experience was disheartening, especially since I initially had a lot of trust in Keith's capabilities. It's important for others seeking legal representation to consider all aspects of a lawyer's client interactions and not just their courtroom performance. Based on my experience, I would advise caution when considering hiring Keith and suggest consulting multiple sources and reviews to form a well-rounded view.

Keith is probably the most knowledgeable family law attorney I have met. I interviewed several before hiring Keith Havens. Keith makes no promises, but he is a subject matter expert regarding marital law. I was surprised that his hourly fee was $250...lower than most.. My divorce was fairly uncomplicated except my career is federal law enforcement and there was property involved...those in my career field no what I'm talking about. FYI - even at $250 per hour, my divorce cost me approximately $15,000 in attorney fees, but his trial preparation is impressive. He is not perfect, but he is definitely looking out for your best interests. Keith takes charge when he needs to, but doesn't need to hear the sound of his own voice, i.e. mediation etc.
My former spouse began to experience psychological issues before and during this process which made negotiations very tough. Her attorneys were competent, but they turned a simple 1 year wait into a 2 year hassle...typical for most attorneys that squeeze their clients for every dollar.
If you need a family law attorney in Maryland, you need to contact Keith Havens.
And if you get married without a prenuptial marital agreement...bad idea...

Beth was instrumental in us getting accommodations in a 504 plan for our child. She is very knowledgeable about how best to work within the school system to get the accommodations that were needed, but was willing to be firm and fight for our child's rights, if needed. Nina was appointed by the court for my two children during a bitter custody battle. She was an excellent lawyer who faught very heard to defend my children, even thogh the judge ruled against her recommendation at first. Weeks after the judges ruling, things started to get even worse then it was before for my 12 year old. After the first ruling she filed for emergency hearing and got the over night suspened permanetly from other parents house. She has given my children their child hood back, peace of mind, and security where they can go to sleep without having to worry abut anything. They can be care free children again. Her fees were very reasonable. I would recommend her to any one one who is in a bad situation and needs legal help to defend and to protect the children. My son is a young adult living with mental illness. His condition rendered him unable to communicate or advocate for his own needs. I sought and acquired Legal Guardianship of my son with the help of Ms. Helwig. After nearly a year of trying to negotiate my mortgage loan, my wife convinced me to hire a firm to handle it. Stephanie drew up spreadsheets and profit and loss statements and helped me properly prove hardship which got my loan modification approved. Within 3 months, my loan was reworked and I could finally afford the monthly payments. Since I have caught up on the mortgage, I am filing a chapter 7 bankruptcy to rid myself of the credit card and medical debt. I am definitely happy with the service and I plan on continuing to use their services.

This review has been way over due. Josephia Rouse helped me tremendously with my divorce on January 18, 2022. After my consultation with her I knew i was in good hands. I hired her in March of 2017, and she did NOTHING until the week before, we settled outside of the courtroom in July because she procrastinated for so long, did nothing, wouldn't respond to emails or calls, but then said on the day of the hearing I'd have to give her $5000 if I don't agree to the settlement...I still didn't get the fact that she totally screwed me so I again asked her to help me with an appeal and she didn't respond for 5 weeks of continuous emails, missed deadlines, had to postpone my hearing and still missed deadlines...the WORST!

Our family hired Ms. Wall for the handling of our mother's estate. But once hired she fails to reply to letters concerning mom's will. Even phone calls she will not return. And still do not know why. She won't reply to any inquiries. So if you want a lawyer that will not inform families of their mother's estate, this is the one to hire. $2,500 later and no one in the family knows what is going on. The executor knows, but shouldn't the rest of our family know, after all it was our mother? Both this attorney and the executor are hiding information so they both can be "sneaky" so the executor gets to share the funds with Ms. Wall and keep the rest for herself. Now we are pursuing another attorney to find information about our mother's will. Guess the only way this lawyer divulges information is to hire another attorney to find information for our family. Another loss for our family...
