I hired the services of David Betz for purposes of getting a name change and him and his paralegal Debbye were professional, answered emails promptly, and were able to handle a complication in my case with no problems. Would highly recommend Mr. Betz.

He seemed to be more concerned about the letter of the law vs the intent of the law, and more for covering his bases than considering all the facts.

Jillian Wood was a great attorney. My case had been in court for three years with no end in sight for a simple parenting plan modification that should have been resolved fairly easily. Jillian stepped in and had it handled professionally and accurately. Everything came out fair in the end and in order to have that done, you need good representation. Before Jillian, I had two attorneys and never knew what good representation was; they took all my money and did nothing for me. Jillian is affordable, easy to work with, and very understanding; she is knowledgeable about family law and knows how to get a case resolved. Jillian knew what she was doing in the courtroom when it didn’t seem like the other attorneys did. Highly recommend!

We had our tax issues resolved within a fair amount of time and were very pleased with the results. We had moved to a new state and had some state tax issues we were unaware of. But Lance really knows his stuff and took care of it and got us on the right track. It’s truly a shame someone will leave such a disgusting review based on nothing but their own racist views and pretend it’s Mr. Drury who has that issue. We were there the day this other person was there behaving like typical trash, then now saying it’s the attorney. Absolutely disgusting behavior but definitely not surprising. It’s the cop-out we’re seeing far too much of these days. Thank you again Mr. Drury!

I engaged Tonya after having to transfer counsel from a collaborative practice attorney when the respondent chose a litigator. Things started out well, but concern increased as my assigned attorney, Ms. Khofeld, had trouble grasping the core financial issue and did not seem comfortable stating a strong position to opposing counsel. Repeated settlement proposals from Page Law progressively eroded my position and gave ground to opposing counsel and when Tonya became personally involved I did not see the direction turn around. We were going to give yet more ground in hopes that we could settle. I lost confidence in counsel and transferred again. I would not be critical of Page Law but for the behavior of my third attorney, who aggressively represented our case, halted further appeasement and presented a settlement proposal with term far more favorable to my position, effectively pulling back 5-6 individual offers made in prior settlement proposals. Of course opposing counsel accused us of reneging, but since they chose not to sign anything, we were under no commitment. When respondent was deposed opposing attorney knew that her case was very tenuous and we settled on grounds quite favorable to my position. That never would have happened had I continued with Page Law. To be fair to Page Law they certainly know the mechanics of the process, but I have strong reservations regarding their advocacy and ability to push a position. My situation was very simple with limited property and no children. Maybe it was too simple and not within their practice scope. I really can think of no other reason why they would take so long, and accumulate such a billable hour count, to achieve nothing whereas the third counsel got a signed settlement in one fourth the time and one fourth the billable hours. Admittedly he had the benefit of the documentation Page Law accrued, but in turn Page Law had the benefit of documentation the collaborative process counsel accrued. We had to throw away Page Law's proposals and state a new one. We did not back down from the core tenets and settled.

Tonya Page , is forthright upfront. Honest trying not to waste your time or funds in unnecessary litigation . In a over 2 yr process I always felt confident Tonya was fighting for my best interest and to bring closure. On several occasions she went above and beyond , always managing to be heard in court or to the Judge. In a difficult lengthy and multifaceted divorce she was knowledgeable and sought out any advice needed. Tonyas and her teams aggressive pursuit helped in maintaining my career my home and way of life . I will gladly recommend Page law for any legal process from the simplest to unimaginable

The word incompetent doesn't do him justice. He deserves negative stars. He is so careless and lazy, he could end up costing you thousands upon thousands, ON TOP of his regular billed services. He just agrees with opposing counsel without even looking things over (nevermind drawing up paperwork to support his own client). I don't know how he's still allowed to practice. In my opinion, it's malpractice. Do. Not. Hire.

I would not hire this lawyer again in any kind of matter. I hired Ms Wilde for a civil matter and she provided hardly any guidance, refused to return calls and communications, didnt file any motions to protect me, allowed the opposing party to trample all over me because she didnt send over pertinant information to me about my case..etc. Ultimately she just took my money. This is not how you build a law firm.

My life was falling apart and she was to be filing my divorce. She gave me all these high numbers id be getting from ex-spouse. I had to call and/or email about 20 times to just get an answer or action. Suddenly with no warning she just says she has too much and drops my case. Did not give my money back or anything. It was horrific. She just disappeared.

I brought Britta on to represent me in an custody case and I quickly realized she absolutely sucked at communication. From my experience, she does not know much about the fields of law she specializes in like child custody and family law. I believe when someone hires an attorney, that they should be able to trust that attorney to do their job properly and to COMMUNICATE. But Britta did not do either, which resulted in me looking for different/better counsel to handle my case. I honestly don't know how or why shes still allowed to practice law

Britta failed to communicate, blatantly lied about filing documents requested from her by the judge on my behalf, missed filing deadlines, and disappeared. Her failure to submit documents cost me custody of my children. In the order handed down by the judge it states that Britta never submitted findings of facts and conclusion of law, or financial information or a proposed parenting plan. Just mediocre all across the board.

Joseph Bante is in a very nice office but he is the most incompetent AWFUL lawyer who will NOT fight for you but will make you think and feel that he is. He is friends with all the lawyers and judges and will screw you over even after you fire him and obtain different counsel. He stutters and it takes him way too long to compose a thought in his mind. He is not eloquent or articulate; it’s atrocious to hear him speak. He will over bill you and then destroy your chances at whatever it is you’re fighting for. DO NOT MEET WITH OR HIRE JOSEPH BANTE!

I used him back in 2019 has a lawyer for a divorce and he failed. He didn’t even fight for me and found out he was good friends with my ex wife’s lawyer. She got the house and the car and cleaned out my bank account. I had to try to fight for myself and it didn’t work. I’ve always was a better person then my ex. She never took care of the kids and I only slept for 5-6 hours a week. And now I’m taking him, my ex wife’s laywer and the judges to federal court. And my new lawyers told me that they let my ex wife lie on her Financials what do you need more money to me but may look like she made hardly anything

If I could've not chose a star we wouldn't have. We've been waiting over a year for him to respond to paperwork we sent him asking him to review it & let us know if he thought we had a case. We told him if he said we did we would then send him a retainer fee & proceed with our case. I've called him multiple times & hearing him tell me he was just about to look at the paperwork or he read it & thought there might be something & he'd call me back. To date, he has NOT EVER CALLED ME BACK! I'm extremely frustrated & don't know what we ever did to be treated this way. At this point we want our paperwork returned to us. We hope to find an attorney in the St. Louis area that would entertain our potential case & let us pay them to proceed.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
