Jeffrey is straight to the point and we were able to settle my divorce in less than 10 months which included assets and child custody. He was available every step of the way to help me through this difficult time for my kids and myself.

I came across Jeffrey after our "candidate" lawyer retired, and he suggested we contact Jeffrey. We met with him, discussed the case and he laid out the process and the pros and cons of the entire process very well. The divorce case took about 10 months to solve the divorce and the child custody. The whole time Jeffrey was always available and kept us up to date with everything. At the trial, Jeffrey presented bank records and income statements showing the Respondent was hiding income, and the award in the case was very fair and more than expected! Great job. I appreciated the fact that as the case went along, we worked together to gather facts and he did all the lawyer stuff- and did a great job.

Mr. Graff was FANTASTIC!!! At the first meeting he was very knowledgeable as to my case details and clearly described the necessary procedures that I should expect. He was available anytime I had a question and always responded right away. When the court date arrived, he was absolutely the most professional in his presentation to the judge (compared to the other attorney who mumbled her way through) and I won my case. You can not go wrong with Jeffrey!!

Kathleen was empathetic to my complex case. She was very attentive and thorough with details of my case. Though i didn't always like hearing the possible outcomes, i appreciate that Kathleen was upfront and honest , which is a trait most lawyers don't practice. I would most definitely recommend Kathleen and more than likely will require her services again in the near future.

I have contacted, consulted with and hired a most excellent choice of attorney; Kathleen is intelligent, organized and thorough. I have never been so impressed with an attorney and I previously interviewed six. Kathleen has proven herself time and again in the battle field of court litigation and correspondence, she is professional, punctual, well spoken, sharply dressed and has my best interest at heart. I continue to work diligently to provide the necessary details needed for my case and she provides many up to date options for me to relay this information, including e-mail, text and person-to-person interaction. I can go on and on about her: she's classy, she is witty and polite, but I will end by stating that she is working to make my case the strongest it could possibly be and I am secure, confident and happy with her actions, honesty, personal mannerisms and a word of thanks.

I am very thankful to have Mr. Matisoff as my attorney. My divorce was challenging as it not only impacted us the adults, it also involved my son who was nine at the time. The first time I met him for my consultation, I knew he was the best attorney anyone could have. His focus was my son's best interest, which is the most important thing to me as a mother. He is very knowledgeable, experience attorney with integrity. The most important thing that is hard to come by for a lot of people, is that he CARES. I am forever grateful and thankful to have Mr. Matisoff as my attorney. With this tough experience in life, I gained hope from him that life would be good in the long run.

Look, divorce is not a pleasant thing to have to deal with, but the last thing you need is an attorney that you have to wonder about. Upon my first meeting with Ed, I instantly knew I was in great hands. His knowledge of the legal system in California regarding divorce proceedings is exemplary, and he instilled confidence and peace of mind at a time when I really needed it. The things that impressed me the most about Ed were his quick response to my seemingly endless questions and the fact that his pricing was extremely reasonable; this is not a guy who will try to gouge you or take advantage of your emotional state. To the contrary, his wise counsel was a source of relief and peace of mind, and he got everything squared away with a livable support agreement in what I consider to be record time. I also consider him to be a true friend now. If you need your situation handled efficiently and cost effectively, find his number and make that call right now. You'll be glad you did... :)

Mr. Matisoff agreed to take over my divorce case a few months ago. He sees discrepancies and knows what actions need to be taken immediately. At my first consultation, I told him I was looking for an attorney with integrity that would assist with a fair settlement for me and my kids in a high conflict divorce. I did not want to have to worry about questioning what I was being told or be left out of the conversation. He told me to meet with my then attorney first to see if a resolution could be found with the current support issue and try to get back on the same page with that attorney. I did as Mr. Matisoff suggested and realized I got more clarity from a brief phone conversation with Mr. Matisoff than I had in a 2 hour face-to-face with my then attorney. My experience with Mr. Matisoff thus far has been unlike that with my former attorneys. I received my monthly invoice today and I am shocked that his billing is more than reasonable. Had I started with Mr. Matisoff, my divorce would have been final long ago, less money would have been wasted and some peace might have been preserved. I don't know that mediation would have ever been possible with my spouse, but I don't think things would have dragged on or gotten out of control. Highly recommended.

I would recommend the Modern Divorce Mediation to anyone getting divorced. I worked with family law attorney Kristina Kell and she was able to get us to a settlement when nothing I had tried in the past worked with my ex. I have friends spending ten's of thousand on their divorces and lasting for years - that is not happening at this firm. Our divorce was fast, professional, and mostly stressless. The best part, I saved a fortune.

I hired Mr. Nakos in the midst of a horrible child custody battle. I had temporarily lost custody of my child due to my ex-husband's lies in court. I was losing hope but all of that changed once I met Mr. Nakos. I hired him during my consultation and he was quick to make me a priority. Mr. Nakos is EXTREMELY intelligent, organized, and most importantly caring. He made me feel that he truly cared about my case and my situation. He fought hard for me and my family with honesty and integrity, and at the end of the day I got 50/50 custody of my child back. I would HIGHLY recommend Mr. Nakos to anybody and everybody. He is a good man and I thank God for putting him in my path, I couldn't have done it without him.

As much as I appreciated Lisa's expert legal insights and her ability to communicate those well, her office operations and paralegal support was lacking in my case. I had numerous paralegals, which caused confusion and delays. Then Lisa was suddenly unavailable (for personal reasons, I think, which can happen), and my case was handed off to a more junior attorney who did not know me, was not especially good at giving support, and who spent a lot of time collaborating with a financial expert that the firm hired to help strategize in some grey areas regarding what was community property vs. my ex's separate property. They had a legal strategy that fell on its face when it was presented to the mediating judge, and this junior attorney had no plan B... throughout the rest of the mediation they gave no help in legal strategy or negotiating advice, but left me to make all the decisions on my own. I ended up with far less than I had been led to expect, and my legal and financial consulting bills were huge. Lisa never reached out to me personally to explain her absence, and when I shared that I was disappointed in how things ended up, she was sadly very defensive of the junior attorney and took no responsibility other than to waive a few minor fees on the final invoice. I think Lisa is talented, but not sure she's good at managing a team. The office seems to have a history of turnover.

I approached the Zonder Law Firm to help assist me with a custody and child support issue. I decided to go with them due to their success rate with settling these delicate matters outside of court in a respectful, and amicable way. During my time from start to finish with my case, my attorney Matt Jewitt was very informative, understanding and handled my case with tact and respect with both myself and the other party involved. If ever i had any questions regarding my case, Matt put my mind at ease and made sure I was happy with the outcome. If you are looking for a law firm to help handle this type of delicate situation in your life, then I would highly suggest them.

I highly recommend Lisa and her wonderful assistant Sharon to get you through one of the most difficult times in your life. Lisa is efficient and trustworthy. She means what she says, and says what she means, in a clear and understandable voice. Lisa is very attentive to her clients and is almost always available to answer any question no matter how insignificant you may feel it is. If Lisa is not available then Sharon is. Sharon is very knowledgable and understanding. Both women are extremely professional, at the same time bringing warmth and caring to the difficult process of divorce. I am very happy with the outcome of my case thanks to Lisa and her staff.

What a Child Support Lawyer Can Do for You

A child support lawyer specializes in legal issues related to the financial support that one parent provides to another for the upbringing of their children. These lawyers assist with establishing, enforcing, and modifying child support orders, ensuring that the financial needs of the child are met, including housing, food, healthcare, education, and other essentials. A child support lawyer can also represent parents in disputes over the amount of support, ensure fair calculations based on income, and handle legal proceedings if one parent fails to meet their obligations.

Whether you're seeking to establish child support, modify an existing order, or enforce payments, a child support lawyer can help you navigate the legal system and protect your rights and the well-being of your child.

When Should I Hire a Child Support Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child support lawyer when you need assistance with any of the following child support matters:

  • Establishing child support: If you are going through a divorce or separation and need to establish a child support order, a lawyer can help ensure that the support amount is fair and accurately calculated.
  • Modifying child support orders: If there has been a significant change in circumstances, such as a job loss, income change, or a child's financial needs, a lawyer can help you request a modification to the existing child support order.
  • Enforcing child support payments: If the other parent has failed to make court-ordered child support payments, a lawyer can help enforce the order through legal means such as wage garnishment, property liens, or even legal action.
  • Disputing child support calculations: If you believe the child support amount has been incorrectly calculated based on your income or expenses, a lawyer can help you challenge the calculation and seek a fair adjustment.
  • Paternity disputes: If paternity needs to be established before child support can be ordered, a lawyer can assist with DNA testing and legal proceedings.
  • Interstate child support cases: If the parents live in different states, navigating child support laws can be complex. A lawyer can help ensure the proper jurisdiction is established and that child support is enforced across state lines.
  • Child support during custody disputes: If child custody and child support are being determined simultaneously, a lawyer can help ensure that both issues are resolved fairly and in the best interest of the child.

Hiring a lawyer early can help ensure that your child support case is handled effectively and that your child's financial needs are met.

What Does a Child Support Lawyer Do?

A child support lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents secure, modify, and enforce child support arrangements. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing for child support: A lawyer can help you initiate the legal process to obtain a child support order, ensuring that all necessary documentation is submitted and deadlines are met.
  • Calculating child support: A lawyer can help ensure that child support is calculated fairly based on both parents' incomes, the needs of the child, and other factors such as healthcare and education costs.
  • Negotiating child support agreements: If both parents are willing to negotiate, a lawyer can help facilitate an agreement on child support outside of court, which can then be approved by a judge.
  • Representing you in court: If negotiations fail or the other parent contests the child support amount, a lawyer will represent you in family court, presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Modifying support orders: A lawyer can help you file a request for modification if circumstances change, such as a loss of income or an increase in the child’s financial needs.
  • Enforcing child support: If the other parent is not making court-ordered payments, a lawyer can take legal steps to enforce the order through wage garnishment, property liens, or other measures.
  • Handling complex cases: In cases involving high incomes, self-employment, or complicated financial situations, a lawyer can help ensure that all relevant factors are considered in determining child support.

How Are Child Support Lawyers Paid?

Child support lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work required. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child support lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location. The total cost will depend on how much time the lawyer spends on your case, including preparation, negotiations, and court appearances.
  • Flat fee: For more straightforward cases, such as uncontested child support agreements or basic modifications, some lawyers may offer a flat fee that covers all services related to the case.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require a retainer, which is an upfront payment that is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount of the retainer depends on the expected complexity of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers offer sliding scale fees based on income or provide pro bono (free) services in cases where clients cannot afford to pay full legal fees, especially when children’s needs are at stake.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are covered.

How Much Does a Child Support Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child support lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, whether it's contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested child support cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and the lawyer’s fees.
  • Contested child support cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $20,000 or more, especially if the case involves significant court time.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour for child support cases, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or cases that involve complex financial issues.
  • Modification or enforcement: Fees for modifying or enforcing a child support order may range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on the complexity and the need for court intervention.

Always ask for a detailed cost estimate during your consultation so you can plan your budget accordingly.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Support Lawyer

Before hiring a child support lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child support cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s establishing, modifying, or enforcing child support orders.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees, or requires a retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case and any potential challenges you may face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Child support cases can take time, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what factors may cause delays.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. What documents should I prepare?
Ask the lawyer what financial documents and other information you should bring to help them calculate child support and build your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Support Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child support lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and have successfully handled child support cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on child support matters.
  • Check for certifications: Some lawyers may have certifications in family law or membership in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), which can indicate their expertise in child support and family law issues.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a child support lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Income documents: Bring pay stubs, tax returns, W-2s, or any other documentation of your income and the other parent’s income, as this will be used to calculate child support.
  • Existing child support orders: If there are any existing child support or custody orders, bring copies for the lawyer to review.
  • Child-related expenses: Provide documentation of your child’s medical bills, education expenses, daycare costs, and any other expenses that should be factored into the child support calculation.
  • Communication with the other parent: Bring any communication between you and the other parent regarding child support, whether through emails, text messages, or written agreements.
  • List of questions: Prepare a list of questions about your case, the legal process, and the lawyer’s fees.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
