Our son had previously been denied by the AAMC for the same accommodations he had received throughout college. We searched for an attorney that could best present our case, and we were immediately drawn to Brown, Goldstein & Levy from their online profile. Once we met Neel Lalchandani and discussed our situation, we knew we had found the right partner. Neel is an excellent listener and his team is very thorough. Neel presented a very compelling case on behalf of our son, and he was recently awarded the full accommodations that we had requested. We could not have achieved our goal without the help of Neel Lalchandani and Brown, Goldstein & Levy. They were the difference-maker and it was the best decision we ever made. Our son's confidence has been restored and his dream to go to medical school continues. Thank you Neel!

If I could give a zero I would this has been my worst experience ever in my entire life. I’ve dealt with smaller injury lawyers who had less and did ten times more. My case is a slip and fall easy the hotel admitted fault right out the gate. There were ample evidence and every thing. I had put my self in therapy not my lawyer I couldn’t work so I fell into financial ruin. My lawyer tells me don’t worry because all of that will be accounted for in the lawsuit just be patient. I go months before I find out that the lawyer I had no longer worked for the company. My case is now over a year and I have a new lawyer who has to be updated on my case. The lack of communication is unbelievable I’ve repeatedly ask to speak to a partner and that has gone unheard. I’m almost three years in and after a horrible display of competence they are now trying to close my case.

Justin is a wonderful lawyer. My wife and I didn’t know where to turn and a friend recommended Justin. Once we spoke with him he took my wife’s case. We had two other lawyers who didn’t do much and just took my money. Justin had to undo what they did and then do his thing. It was a long road and Justin got the 22.5 year sentence thrown out and then the judge gave her 8 years instead. Justin is a fighter and it was a long road. He brought my wife from WV to Baltimore and talked to the prosecutors and she and Justin worked out to bring my wife back to court. Myself and my wife’s sister testified and the judge basically took the 22.5 years back and gave her 8 years. She’s ready to come home any day now. I just want to relay what a great, great, lawyer Justin is. He was here for us all the way and my wife and I are totally happy with the outcome and I want to advise anyone to call Justin for any criminal case that they have.

Justin was heaven sent after going through several lawyers who were mediocre to say the least. Justin is passionate about his clients, his communication is beyond the norm, and more importantly he knows the law. Justin put his all into my brothers case. His research skills were impeccable, always coming up with different options and ways to approach the case. He was very detailed and thorough while reviewing the case.Justin is very respected in the courtroom and very well known for getting the job done. We couldn't have asked for a better attorney for the job. Every lawyer should take a lesson from Justin as the perfect example of being a top notch lawyer.

I have worked for trained many legal teams from small to the top 5 in my IT profession, but when came to my son's life, I call a referral of top litigator, which lead me to C. Justin Brown. After vetting a few and meeting with Justin, I knew I had made the right choice. His professionalism and compassion transcended into a passion for my son’s case. He even went us to surrender himself and provided wise counsel throughout the entire process. He was available to answer all of my questions. My son was not just another client/matter number, but his life mattered. I trusted him with my son’s life, and He and his legal team came through. I would recommend him for lead or co-counsel on any matter that require discernment, integrity and wisdom before the bench. Thank You is an understatement. His services were invaluable in the victory of my son's case.

Got injured few years ago on the job and Ballenger & Roche not only had my back from literal day 1 thru the end they kept me informed of everything that was going on at the time, fought for me to get surgery and all medical treatment. They worked literally day and night more times than not to make sure everything was handled taking a massive weight off of me, they even went so far as to prep me for court as I’d never even been to court and I was nervous. They are extremely thorough and professional, If you need an attourney I would definately call Ballenger & Roche, I hope I don’t need to use them again but I know if I do I will call the best

Had rachel Sevearance assist my neighbor in retrieving a peace order for.. “ banging trash cans, reaving engine, leaving a review of a business on google.” Just a very hateful and nasty lady. During the communication and mediation, she would drag it out as much as she could to charge her client as much as possible. Not only did she write a completely joke of a complaint that slandered me and my company, she tried to throw dirty on me and ruin my life. Just a complete joke of a situation. Mind you i am black and her client is a old white lady. This lady and my neighbor are clearly hateful. If you are black and work with this lady i would reconsider. At the very minimum, she will do anything for money. Gassed her client up just to charge many hours. A joke. I got the reciepts. She thought she would just spit on me. Collect a check her client and move on. Gods got you Rachel.

We are extremely disappointed in our representation by Stallings and formally Niles, Barton, & Wilmer, LLP. Many failings were met throughout 5 years of litigation, including the advice that "any pursuant of unjust enrichment will torpedo your chance at an appeal." After 5k in the appeals lawyer just to read the case and determine there is no chance at an appeal, we consequently lost any chance at pursing the unjust enrichment, totalling more than 600k of losses. For the first 4.5 years, Stallings allowed the defense to walk all over us, he lacked strength, and the will to win his case. If you want a lawyer to fight for your rights as if they were his own, look elsewhere. Frustrated doesn't begin to cover the feelings with our representation, or lack there of. We hoped to have adequate representation at our hearing, Stallings would not alow us to bring questions to him throughout the day nor would he ask any questions that we had. If you're looking for an attorney that is worth his $350/hr, look elsewhere.

As a business owner, I highly value reviews and feedback, recognizing them as essential tools to enhance products or services, or in some cases, maintain current exceptional standards. Recently, I engaged Attorney Michael Cochran for a Child Support case, and unfortunately, my experience was less than satisfactory. I felt that Michael did not exercise due diligence, and there was an unsettling lack of clarity regarding the details and plan of action for my case. After leaving a review expressing my concerns, he responded with a text, suggesting that I find a new attorney. While this made sense, as I had no intention of continuing with his services, the manner in which he handled the situation was unprofessional. To provide more context, I had an upcoming custody case related to the Child Support matter. I was already hesitant to use Michael's services due to dissatisfaction with how he managed the Child Support case. For instance, he made arguments more suited for a custody case rather than a Child Support case, leaving me confused about his approach, as we never discussed anything beyond the payment balance. Michael's response to my review was a text message that read: “Did you see the email? I saw the negative review you posted on Google regarding the child support case. I suggest you find another attorney to represent you in the custody case and have them file a substitution of counsel. I will hold until then. Thanks.” Rather than addressing my concerns through open dialogue, he chose to send a cancellation text. In my opinion, lawyers are paid too much to allow interpersonal issues and lack of communication to hinder their professional relationships. When fighting for your child, the last thing you need is an attorney who falls short in these areas. In the past, I used Erica Slater, and I wish I could turn to her now, but unfortunately, she no longer practices family law. I hope my experience serves as a cautionary tale for others seeking legal representation in family matters.

Mr. Cochran was a pleasure to work with. He did an excellent job in communicating what would be expected during the hearing, and possible outcomes. Prior to the actual hearing much attention was given to researching the history of the case, as well as preparing of the defendant and witnesses. In the end the outcome was much better than expected. I would not hesitate to use him in the future if the need arises, or to recommend him.

I was assaulted by one of my students and injured on the job. 17 years of teaching in title one schools, and this is the first time I've ever become a victim. I was victimized by my student. I was victimized through my place of employment and unfortunately I was victimized by the very man I hired to help me find justice. He did not keep me informed. He made important decisions about my case without discussing it with me. One example: In court opposing counsel was discussing the IME outcome for the state and we discover their doctor did not perform all the test he was suppose too. The judge immediately started making verbal arrangements for me to go back to get the rest of the test done. My attorney spoke up and said he was okay with it going on record that said doctor would probably say it was 0 percent. All three laughed and kept it going. Of course, Opposing counsel agreed and no one asked me anything. This is just one example of several failures to communicate that I experienced while working with Mr. FJ Collins! He did not give me the representation I deserved. Do better Attorney Collins. Just do better.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
