The best attorney of New York and helps every step of the way. They give you care package when you complete the retainer online with them. In addition they only work with workers compensation. I recommend to any employee, family and friends. Thank you Markhoff & Mittman, P.C.

Mr. Gershon, is an excellent lawyer. Thoughtful and concerned, he gives your case his full attention. He knows the law in and out, and he is always honest and forthright, even as he develops a strategy to win. I give him my highest recommendation.

Markhoff & Mittman The Disability Guys are SKILLED, PROFESSIONAL, EXPERIENCED, AND VERY ATTENTIVE. This is by far the best LAW FIRM I EVER EXPERIENCED. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM! I ended up finding Markhoff & Mittman, P.C. The Disability Guys and I am so happy I did! I loved their logo, slogan, informative videos and blog. I wish I had found them at the beginning of my lawsuit, however it all worked out and I am very pleased with their work, professionalism, and efforts. AT THE DISABILITY GUYS they got back to me EXPEDIOUSLY every time I reached out to them via email or telephone call. They also take great pride in their work, marketing, and how they represent and communicate with their clients. I was very impressed. Benai Lifshitz esq., was very knowledgeable, professional and answered all of my concerns and questions with patience, ease, and expertise. The paralegals were kind, welcoming, knowledgeable, patient, and professional as well. THANK YOU Markhoff & Mittman, P.C. The Disability Guys!!!!

As for someone who is a victim of sexual assault. I came across this law firm hoping to be taken as a client but unfortunately this did not happen. Don’t get me wrong, the staff is very nice. However, they make it seem like you are talking to Norma for the 1 hour intake call on the website but really you are speaking to a Law Clerk named Roshelle who was also very nice. I did not appreciate the fact, they didn’t have the decency to call me to tell me the unfortunate news. I had to scroll through a bunch of emails to find an email from Norma. If you have to pay a $275 fee (only refundable if they don’t take you as a client) just for a person to get information about your legal situation when other lawyers do it for free is kind of crazy.

Stay away from this law firm. Their m.o. has not changed in years. Someone posted five years ago how Mr. Goldberg gave them the run around. He does the same to me and I am his client! He never returns my phone calls or my emails. I called the office recently and left a message for his partner and nothing. They don't value their clients. Go elsewhere. Had I known what I know now, I would have gone to a different law firm.

Years ago this man charged me and my mother 1000 dollars for a 10 minute consultation to tell us he needed 50,000 to take my mom as a client and told her to unbury the money she stole from the government . Even after we told him while my mother cried that she did not have this money that they were accusing her of Stealing in a white collar case . The lack of sympathy for my mom who is now deported haunts me And should haunt him good life niel Ruskin .

I cannot express enough gratitude for the exceptional service provided by Mr. Nicholas Mundy throughout our immigration process. From our very first consultation, it was clear that Mr. Mundy not only possesses a profound knowledge of immigration law but also truly cares about his clients' needs. Over the years, he has been a trusted advisor to my family, guiding us through every step of what could have been a very complex and overwhelming journey. Thanks to Mr. Mundy’s meticulous attention to detail, clear communication, and unwavering support, my niece and nephew successfully obtained their green cards. Personally, I am grateful to have received my U.S. citizenship, while my mother was granted her green card, and my brother and his wife were able to achieve their U.S. citizenship as well. We have had the privilege of working with Mr. Mundy for over 10 years, and throughout this time, his professionalism, expertise, and commitment have been evident in everything he does. His ability to navigate the intricacies of immigration law, answer our questions with patience and clarity, and ensure that all paperwork and deadlines were meticulously handled made the entire process so much easier for us. His support has been truly invaluable. I would also like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to Mike, whose assistance was equally instrumental in helping us through this process. His knowledge, professionalism, and dedication to ensuring that we understood each step of the way made a world of difference. The welcoming atmosphere of the firm, coupled with the professionalism of everyone involved, made working with them a pleasant and reassuring experience. We are incredibly fortunate to have had Mr. Mundy and Mike by our side throughout our immigration journey. I highly recommend their services to anyone seeking knowledgeable, trustworthy, and compassionate legal assistance. Thank you again, Mr. Mundy and Mike, for your continued support and dedication. Wishing you both a joyful holiday season and a prosperous New Year!

I had the option of many top lawyers to work with for filing my naturalization application and preparing for my interview but choose Kathy as she goes the extra mile for her clients and her rates are quite reasonable. She gave me ample time and was very thorough with my application. She’s responsive and keeps you informed of your status and important dates. I appreciated her encouragement and legal support during a difficult time. I highly recommend her services based on my experience.

I hired Kathy Polias in 2014 for a paternity proceeding asking for a civilly registered parentage judgment and DNA test because it was required for recognition in the country I lived with my son. Kathy made a private stipulation of support deviating below CSSA that is not even enforceable in NY State and obtained a common law order of filiation that is also not considered valid by NYS. The nonjudicial orders were not confirmed by a judge, I was not even joined or served with the documents. My son has had no right to child protective services in the 9 years I have been requesting them, CPS does not afford credibility to unregistered parentage orders. Kathy believes she did her job and says she can’t provide more assistance when I asked her to obtain confirmation from a judge. She believes common law documents of filiation that are never confirmed by a judge are valid. She believes orders of support after order of filiation can be unregistered and enforced in private meetings with no state or judicial oversight. she deems to believe that children born out of wedlock are not entitled to have civil rights in civil records. She appeared at the first fearing but the case was never overseen or confirmed by a judge, so technically there was no parentage trial. I was not joined and Paternity requires personal appearances or both parties to execute a single signed original document to meet requirements for the software to permit a stipulation to be transmitted. A family court judge could’ve issued an order, but since 2014 UCCJEA, paternity is a custody proceeding so support for a child born out of wedlock requires a judge to confirm and electronically transmit final judgment then refer matter of support back to a magistrate after the electronic record has been established in the state. Kathy believes magistrates can be vested with power of a judge to make final judgments when custody is disputed. The software does not follow common law precedent so no orders establishing my son’s rights have ever reached the state officials. The birth certificate says father unknown, after 9 years trying to obtain enforcement of the deals Kathy made.

Attacked took place June 8 2015 in Centre Street court house and attacked August 2015 in Riker's Island by correction officers and he was hospitalized after the attack of August 2015. Leventhal was hired in September 2015 to file the claim for the severe attack on August 2015 which he did not file the claim for that attack either. He sent a letter on October of 2016 saying he could not represent. We was never notified of this shocking unprofessional decision. He took a year to tell us this in writing but we were communicating with him all the time. Never said a word. Even brought documents to his office.

My family and I have worked with Patrick for many years, and find him to be the most honest and forthright attorney I have ever met. Patrick always provides me with an honest assessment of whatever issue I bring to him, even if his assessment is that I don't need to hire an attorney. Patrick's practice is one of the very few businesses that has survived all these years on Third Avenue because it is a family business and a part of the Bay Ridge community. They really treat everyone like a neighbor and truly care about our neighborhood. Patrick is and always will be my family's first stop in a crisis. Even if he doesn't have an answer, he always knows where to find one.

I retained this attorney to take over an existing litigation case. From the beginning I was displeased with this attorney's behavior. He is extremely rude, thinks he knows everything and was constantly belittling me. The first time I asked to terminate services and receive my retainer back, he outright refused, insisting that I give him 2 more weeks so he can prove to me that he "is a good lawyer." For those 2 weeks he was avoiding my phone calls until one day I had enough and went to his office, requesting my retainer back in person. He was still giving me a hard time over returning the retainer and kept changing the amount withheld. His clerk first told me $750 would be held back, then the attorney raised it to $2700.00. I disputed this amount and sent him a formal letter of termination and told him that I would possibly seek litigation and other remedies to acquire my rightful refund. It was after receiving my letter that he sent me a letter offering only $6261.00. From $750 that his clerk told me to $3739.00 is a huge difference. To date I have yet to receive anything in regards to a refund and the matter has been handed over to the Brooklyn Bar Association and 2nd District Grievance Committee. I do not recommend this attorney to anyone.

Do not use this agency because they do not help you whether you're disabled or not, because it will give you a lot of excuses and run arounds, and they don't fight hard enough for your situation especially Lauren price the attorney who did nothing to help with my eviction, and she sided with the agency that's called WELLLIFE NETWORK who is abusive to disabled people by throwing them out without any guidance and no help. Brooklyn defenders do not help anyone who needed the help. They're selfish and lazy, period.

This is the office that I highly recommend for visiting for several reasons! First of all, the employees and managers are polite, diligent and professional, especially one pleasant woman, whose name is Sasha)) Secondly, because the work and applications are processed up to deadlines and on time. For example, my Letter of attorney and Apostille were processed ahead of the agreed deadline, which for I was amazed and pleasantly surprised, cause that gave an opportunity to check the document thoroughly and send the approved version back for final processing. I like the fact that they send translated documents to their customers for the review ahead of time. Third reason is that the office has a convenient location in Brooklyn, and managers can analyze and process documents both - in Russian and English languages! That is awesome! So, my final word is - do not hesitate to visit and refer to the outlined office!

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
