Garrett was quick to respond to all my questions and concerns. He always outline my options in a concise, easily digested manner. I completely trusted his work as well as his opinion. I would say that he is head and shoulders above other attorneys that I have come into contact with in his field. Garrett was always the calm in the storm and did not react when challenged by opposing counsel. Garrett did a great job representing my desires and guided me toward a positive outcome.

Garrett handled a case involving my mother who was neglected by a nursing home. It was hard on our family, and he took the time to listen to us. He always returned our calls and let us know what our options were.

Garrett has been nothing short of miraculous for me. My situation has proven to be less than optimal, as far as my case evolving into a garden variety law suit. It has been a rough ride thus far but Garrett has kept me abreast of all levels/stages/expectations of my case and has done so in a personal and professional manner. He's made time for me whenever I've called him with comments, questions or concerns. From the time I met him I liked him. Our professions may be at the opposite ends of the spectrum but I retained his services based on my impression of him as a person as well as an attorney. I never felt like an obsolete client with Garrett. He talks to you, not at you. Garrett's a good guy and a good attorney.

I’d like to start off by saying, Jennie is absolutely amazing! I got into my first car accident and I wasn’t sure what to do. This is the first time I’ve ever needed a lawyer. Jennie made this process so easy, and she walked me every step of the way. She always explained things to me in a way that made sense and she’s honestly a pleasure to talk to. She’s extremely down to earth and always made me feel comfortable. Outside of what an amazing person she is, she really fights for her clients. Jennie was able to get me an outstanding settlement on my suit. I truly appreciate her and all her hard work.

Sandy is the young energetic and understanding attorney. If you are looking for a comprehensive attorney package, then try this young man. Sandy successfully conducted couple of closings for me. His price is unbeatable, but most important to me, I could do the closing with him while I was out of state, yet, he did not ask me for power of attorney or anything like that. On the opposite, he manage to make me participate in the closing online. so, he is definitely a modern attorney that fully meet my needs and I am happy to call him my attorney.

I have known Sandeep now for about 5 years, and he has always been there for me. He is prompt, highly educated and most important- thorough. He takes his time and understands every situation before assessing it and producing options. Many times has he brought ideas that were out of my sight that worked out best. I admire his humility and efforts, especially in a lawyer. He's worked for me both professionally and personally. And again, never let me down in anything that I have brought to his attention.

I was recommended to Scott Morgan by a friend, I called him, explained my situation, he immediately asked me and my husband if we could set a time to see him, to come into his office. We came in, Scott reviewed his history and his experience as an Attorney with us, very impressive. When he asked us questions, he was very attentive of our case. As a matter of fact, we had two claims at this time. We were pleased to consider Scott as our attorney. We were always kept informed regarding our case. He was very efficient in helping to resolve two claims in a very timely matter. I would recommend this lawyer.

My wife and I realized our marriage based green card petition had some potential issues in our case, so we decided to retain an attorney. When you retain an attorney, you want someone who is endowed with knowledge about the system, is diligent, has a positive attitude, will understand and tackle all angles of your case, and most importantly is sincere about you and your case. We knew from experience that not all attorneys are created equal, so we had initial consultations with several attorneys, and finally decided to retain Ryan because he seemed to fit the qualities we were looking for. Over the next couple of months, as our file was prepared and case moved through the system, our initial assessment of him was only further confirmed. He tackled the problematic issues in our case and explained them clearly during file preparation itself, to the point that they hardly came up in the interview. He was easily accessible, and even when busy he would always return our phone calls and emails. He was also extremely polite and professional, unlike some attorneys who make you feel like you have no self worth. He was positive and confident (but in a realistic, truthful way), unlike some attorneys who make you feel like your case is so difficult, they're not sure what will happen and that you shouldn't expect results. He was also sincere about us and our case, understanding that we're human beings and not just another casefile. And very reasonable when it came to fees, given the quality of service that he provides. We received an interview call for the green card approximately ten weeks after we applied. Ryan accompanied us to the interview. It was a positive experience, green card was approved at the interview. In sum, this attorney has some excellent qualities, and based on our experience, highly recommended. In sum, we find him to be an excellent attorney, and highly recommend him

Yusra reviewed my physician contract. She was very thorough and walked me step by step through the process. Besides the obvious things (compensation, non-compete, tail coverage), she noted many points and language used that I would not have paid attention to and made sure we address these during negotiations. While it seemed insignificant to me at the time, this ended up really saving when I later decided to terminate my employment with the group. Yusra is thoughtful, attentive, accessible, experienced, and gives you the time and attention you need, not just another assembly line contract review. Highly recommended.

From Lynn, Chicagoland Most of us would prefer to go an entire lifetime without having to retain a lawyer. In fact, I think it’s fair to say that retaining a lawyer is right up there with having a coloscopy. But if you find yourself in such need, I can think of no better firm than Miner, Barnhill & Galland. I found myself seriously wronged by my employer. Employers, even ones that have integrity, are at a loss for how to evaluate complaints. If weak, short-sighted or unprincipled, they panic and throw employees under the bus. Of course, an employer should have its employees’ backs—that builds fierce loyalty and brings the best out of those who work for the employer. but we know it does not always work that way. Some employers care more about their own wallets and reputations. They will protect themselves at all costs, notwithstanding duties of procedural fairness or obligations under the law of due process. Myopically, they will protect themselves even at the risk of alienating top-performing employees or showing themselves to be morally bankrupt. And that’s when you need this firm. As a lawyer friend advised me when my employer panicked and threw me under the bus: "What u need is a big Chicago lawyer writing on Chicago law firm letterhead, to scare them into acting correctly. It will scare the pants off them. Ideally, you want to retain a named partner.” Getting that without a paying over a $1000 a hour is tough. At so-called Big Law firms, associates with five years’ experience charge as much as my lawyer, who just finished his fifth decade in practice. At Big Law firms, partners prepare the monthly bill to the client and send things on to the client, but far less experienced associates do the actual work. What I wanted in someone representing me was seasoning and perspective. I needed a big stick that would be far less expensive to deploy. I wanted to talk to an attorney with five decades of experience—and I did. George Galland picked up my calls, without fail. He took emails on the weekend, did conference calls at crazy hours. To some people, the word attorney carries a negative connotation but consider the synonym, advocate. My attorney, George Galland, gets in there and advocates for every inch of advantage. In hundreds of pages of documents and emails, he showed my employer each and every way it had violated its own policies, as well as state and federal law. He showed how those appointed internally to review the matter violated basic tenets of due process. Although George only schooled my employer in Due Process 101, he politely engaged my employer’s counsel, which may be the best way to persuade them that they have a problem. He spoke to internal forces that could help to rectify mistakes made by those at the very top. He applied regular pressure in conversations with their lawyer, pointing out that “bad facts make bad law.” There is a second synonym for lawyer, an older understanding, of the counselor. This aspect can be hard to take, but one’s own attorney often has to pull us back, like a good friend does when it appears a bar fight is brewing (say, for example, when one’s opponent in pool is losing and not taking it well). Good counsel will say, “best to head for the exit.” I wanted to take my story public, to get a big newspaper to cover it. That would right the wrong, I thought. Far better, George said, to have my employer pay the full freight and then some. Far better to have them write a check that shows up internally and memorializes the wrong. (True to form, when I shared this review, he edited out the juicier parts.) It is not so often when we are wronged in life that the other guy has to pay for their mistakes. You don't take a knife to a gunfight. You need counsel that is up to the toughest challenges, and there is none better than George Galland.

I cannot recommend Attorney Vadim Glozman highly enough. My mother was facing a terrifying 10-year federal prison sentence, and thanks to his exceptional legal skills and dedication, her sentence was reduced to just one day, time considered served. From start to finish, Vadim was incredibly responsive, supportive, and professional. He took the time to explain everything to us, kept us updated throughout the process, and gave us confidence when we needed it most. His deep knowledge of federal law and his ability to build a strong defense made all the difference in my mother’s case. If you or a loved one are facing a federal case, Vadim Glozman is the attorney you want by your side. His expertise and commitment to his clients are unmatched.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
