I have used Elizabeth several times to help me with a few legal issues. She successfully negotiated several contracts with my bisiness. She represented me on a minor domestic matter. She also helped me with some traffic problems. I appreciate that I can always call her for advice or a question. If she cant talk to me right away then scheduling a time to talk is always easy. I respect her dedication and hard work. She is not shy when it comes to fighting hard for a client. If you want a lawyer who will communicate with you and explain everything in clear terms, then I recommend you call her law firm.

Working with Elizabeth Carpenter and her law firm has truly saved my life, which in the past was entirely unmanageable. In 2020 while I was in active addiction I made the grave mistake of falling into the wrong crowd of people that unfortunately involved me in a high profile case in Jefferson Parish. By some miracle she and her law firm were able to help me retain most of my freedoms and continued to fight for me through the process of probation and ensuring that I got the help I needed to achieve a sober life. She still continues today to help me in the fight to rebuild my life one step at a time. Today I am a free man thanks to Elizabeth!

This is long and i apologize, but this needs to be seen. I received a ordinance violation ticket last year and hired Elizabeth after an issue with our previous attorney. She said she would do some research and let us know our options. She never contacted us back, so unless we called her there was no communication. Everytime we asked what was going on, she had nothing. WE did the research, WE did all the footwork. When my trial came she was still not prepared. The DA questioned the officer involved and he had no clue who I was and then assumed I was actually someone else. When Elizabeth went to question him she did not ask any questions regarding what the officer said and bumbled through the entire questioning. Ultimately I was found guilty for a charge that I never did. My husband in his frustration through this ( his review is here as well anthony beck) contacted her several times regarding the fact she never did any research, or contacted us, she would get short and overly defensive with him. He did tell her flat out that during this time she did nothing which is the truth. In court she told me he was a "scary, horrible abusive man" and she "feels sorry for me". She responded to his review with half truths and messaged me demanding he remove his review, again saying that she feels sorry for me living with "such a horrible abusive man" which he is definitely not.

My Father was about to have unexpected heart surgery. Like most us, unprepared for such an event, my Dad wanted a will. Mr. Lambert listen to my father's wishes and rapidly prepared the document. My Dad has passed knowing he left a life in order.

What’s going on with my case?? Your unwillingness to return phone calls and/or give updates is ridiculous!!!! I don’t bother anyone about anything, it’s not in my nature. But to be ignored by someone who I thought I could trust with my case is very unsettling. I brought my suit to you years ago, and I still have no resolution or knowledge of what you’re doing with the case. I’ve been through so much since I came to your office many years ago now, and you sir, well it seems like you just don’t give a damn (my opinion).

I hired Sharon Williams to help me with a name change. I told her I wanted to use an attorney with experience in this sort of thing so I wouldn't have to worry about it and would get it done fast as I need to have my preferred name match for my job. She told me not to worry, that she would take care of it quickly. I initially met with her in late July, and I signed my petition in early August. it is now January and the process is not done. She has been very unresponsive, as I've texted her multiple times asking for specifics on why this is taking so long. I now haven't heard from her in a week. I've called her office multiple times with no answer and left messages. Called her phone but the voicemail box is full. The lack of communication leaves me to not trust that she is able to do the job I paid her to do in a timely manner, and feel like I've wasted my time and money for something I would have been better off doing myself. Ive spoken with people who have changed their names on their own with no attorney and most did it within a month. I am at 5 months. My passport has expired and my license expires soon which will be a major complication where I have to renew it under my old name, while I was under the impression would have been taken care of by now. I would not trust Sharon Williams with anything as important as custody or a will if she can't even properly do a name change.

This law firm helped me through the entire claim process from beginning to end. They kept me informed at each step as to what was going on with my case and included and advised me on the decisions that I had to make throughout. I would recommend this firm to help bring and settle any case you present to them. they have my highest trust.

Professional and personable; experienced. They are experts in their areas of practice. I worked mostly with Andy Bizer, but everyone in the office was professional, courteous, and easy to work with/talk to. Andy returned my calls and emails quickly; made accomadations for my comfort. He walked me through the most difficult parts of my case, patiently answering my questions, explaining things until I was comfortable. Achieving my goals was always his only priority. His fees were very competitive and very reasonable. Andy went above and beyond to settle my case according to MY preferences. I couldn't be happier with my results. This is a great group of people, doing great things. They will always be my first choice for legal help.

I’ll forever recommend Chelsea to any and everyone who needs an employment attorney. She is thorough, will take her time to listen to you, keep you updated, and most of all, treats clients as a human being and not just another number. Chelsea helped me with an employment issue when I was about to give up, and did for me what I couldn’t get done for months. I had another attorney who wasn’t able to assist me, but was thrilled when she found out that Chelsea went above and beyond to give me the help I needed. She never made me feel less than, or that I was a waste of her time. She saw me for who I was, did what she could to help, and I was extremely pleased with the results.

She dropped my case because she said I wasn’t suffering enough and she didn’t see the damages in my case since I was on workers comp. Had me waiting on her and she let me down at a crucial time in my life. I guess if your case isn’t making news headlines then she isn’t interested. She asked me the client how much do I think my case is worth.. Shouldn't she know that if she is the lawyer I hired ?? I felt she really dropped the ball on my case and now I have no representation. I feel lost. Every case is important not just the ones that make news headlines.

Not even sure how this man passed the Bar exam. Never followed up. Never returned my calls. Barely spoke with him on the phone. He had my case for almost 2 years and I’d get the exact same response I got the last time. I don’t think he even tried to help my case. It was a Lemon Law case that resulted in an accident and putting myself, as well as my significant other and two children in the hospital for. I had EVERY piece of evidence that the vehicle (which was sold by NISSAN btw) that it was DANGEROUS. It was a salvage title that Nissan “fixed.” The whole gram was bent. EVERY mechanic I brought it to said it was dangerous. Well... turns out... it was! Almost killed me!!! THANKS MICHAEL BREEDEN.... FOR NOTHING!!!! You know who I am! You should be hearing from the Bar Association now that I have Hospital bills from the vehicle that I told you OVER AND OVER AGAIN WAS DANGEROUS! DO NOT USE THIS MAN! HE DOES NOTHING! His office is so unorganized. He trips over everything. I often wondered if he was even drunk or on drugs when I’d see him... WHEN ID SEE HIM! YOU, MICHAEL BREEDEN, almost cost me MY FAMILY FOR YOUR LACK OF WORK AND TERRIBLE WORK ETHIC!!!! RUNNNNN people. Find yourself a good attorney!

I used Jane Booth years ago when my car was totaled after being rear-ended, and all she did was get my car paid off at $5,000. I have had three surgeries on my back and am in a wheelchair as a result, which could have been avoided if she had done her job and sent me to a REAL orthopedic specialist, right away, and ordered a full exam. Instead, she sent me to her crony who did his own "therapy" in his office for a few weeks, and then discharged me. I told the doctor that I was still in serious pain with certain movements, and he LAUGHED and told me not to move like that and I wouldn't hurt. I ended up going to a doctor on my own, and getting care on my own. I felt that both the attorney and the doctor she sent me to failed to do their jobs, and were very unprofessional. I do NOT recommend Jane Booth for anything.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
