Vernon has been absolutely amazing. A year and half after I had been injured at work and after receiving medical treatment, it was time to start the settlement process. I was given an offer and wasn't sure if it was good. I found The Sumwalt Group on Google and saw the 5 star reviews. I reached out to them to see if I could get some advice. Vernon was the one to call me and gave me some wonderful free advice on countering and what would be a good amount. He also looked over the settlement agreement I received to make sure it wouldn't mess up any potential social security/disability in the future. Vernon made me feel like he cared and like he wanted the best for me on this settlement and helped me to avoid having to hire a lawyer and drag out the process. I hope I never get hurt on the job again, but if I ever do I will definitely reach out to them again.

Jonathan was referred to me by a friend. He was very attentive, answered all my questions in a promptly manner, and was able to examine at the evidence that I provided and built a great case for me. Most importantly, he acted in the best of my interest and provided great counsel in my case. I highly recommend him and will definitely come back to him again in the future if I have any legal questions.

Jonathan Vogel is an outstanding attorney who communicates well and cares about his clients. His strategy is quite versatile: he can take an aggressive or low-key approach depending on what the situation requires. He is incredibly well-versed in the law, and he will take time to thoroughly research and understand your case so he can be a fierce advocate for you. He listens to his clients and puts their priorities first. My case was very complicated. It involved many individuals and classes at a large university, but he was quick to sort out the important details. Less than three weeks after taking my case, everything was resolved in my favor, and he didn’t even use the entire retainer! I highly recommend Jonathan Vogel for any educational issue. He will represent you well. Susan Nelson

Jonathan worked with me while dealing with a code of conduct issue at my college. He was extremely supportive, hard-working, and thoughtful during the time we worked together to navigate the judicial process at my school. Thanks to Jonathan's efforts, the issue was resolved in my favor. I highly recommend Jonathan to any student who needs support protecting his or her rights-- I could not have hired a better attorney.

Nothing but great things to say about Darrin Gamradt and his assistant. They responded very quickly to my emails and phone calls. I reached out to them for a speeding ticket on 85 S and was very pleased with what I ended up with - a non moving violation. The reason why I chose him over other Cabarrus county law offices was because of the quick response I got when I reached out to them. Thank you Mr. Gamradt and Lauren!

Kristin was incredibly thorough with all information and documentation for my separation. She made sure that I understood everything that I was agreeing to, and made sure that she had all the necessary facts. She also helped me keep perspective while going through such an emotional event. There were times that my emotions made me want to ask for things out of spite from my ex-husband, and she was always very calm and clear about what was fair, realistic, and financially worth fighting for, without letting my husband or his attorney take advantage of me. I can honestly say she made the entire experience as pleasant as it could possibly be - some days I think she made as great a therapist as an attorney! I trust her implicitly, and I know that at all times she was looking out for my best interests, not just hers. Of course, results also speak volumes about an attorney's abilities and I can say that at the end of the proceedings I left my marriage with full ownership of the house, all savings accounts, retirement accounts, a paid-off car, and our dogs. In the end, I felt that the final agreement was more than fair in my favor, and that is due entirely to Kristin. I feel that I was very well represented and I don't think I could have had a more pleasant experience or a more beneficial outcome from anyone else.

My employer was requiring a DEI training that compelled myself and others to answer questions with their answers, or you could not complete the training. When we let our employer know that we couldn’t answer the questions because it would not be consistent with our religious beliefs and values, they told us we would be terminated. This is when I contacted Mr. McRary. Ian was unbelievably quick to respond, very knowledgeable on the matter, and genuinely cared about not just helping with the matter, but also making sure my family was informed and would be able to withstand the process. Ian guided me through trying to work out an accommodation without having to take it to the next level, which would have taken a toll on my family’s finances and wellbeing. In the end (it took us about two weeks) my employer did accommodate and we did not have to answer questions unless they were consistent with our religious beliefs and values. I cannot thank him enough and HIGHLY recommend!!!

I’m a social worker and speak with lots of people on a daily basis. He is very knowledgeable and I look forward to having him represent me in my matter against my employer. He is a caring attorney and knows when he has a claim and that is what you want. He picked out all elements of the claim and knew which he can tackle with confidence. With that being said, I know that there is no promise that a claim can 100% be achieved and he is upfront about that which is apart of their ethical responsibilities and speaks volume on his character. It is with great regret that I am leaving a bad review. I was hopeful that he would serve me well based on our initial conversation, however he did not. My case is drug related and on his website it states he has 30 years of experience with drug cases but if you ask around… he’s a traffic lawyer. My vehicle, money, and phones were confiscated and he all but told me I wouldn’t get my car back until after my case was settled but my current lawyer filed a motion and got it back within days. I was told my money would not be returned but again my current lawyer advised me that with proper proof a judge wouldn’t refuse giving back my money(my case is on going will update on how that goes). I essentially paid $3,500 of which I was refunded $1250, for him to appear at court one time and respond to 2 portal messages. After receiving better counsel I feel I have been completely ripped off and will probably be reporting my grievances to the BAR. I don’t know if he was just keeping my expectations low so that he can later over exceed them or if I’m just making excuses for him at this point but I’m really disappointed with his counsel and glad I switched before it was too late.

This is the right law firm. One star. Really hurting someone. She is their client and it’s hard to watch. I pray they do the right thing, this is a horrible situation to be a part of not be able to help, I pray these attorneys will change their ways and decide to do the right thing. Watching a loved one suffer over the holidays (or anytime) from choosing the wrong attorneys is a nightmare. I pray day and night these attorneys will see the light and not cause any more suffering. I am watching a loved one who is a “current or former client”. She is someone who is dear to my heart and being harmed tremendously by your choice of behavior. She won’t write her own review but is so terrified and hurt she can barely get out of bed most days for the last two weeks strictly on account of your choices. I’m sure she will write a review of this path you have chosen continues, but she is too scared to speak up and you need to stop what you have chosen to do to your client. Don’t make excuses replying to google review as I can easily delete this, when what you should be doing is what’s right towards a human’s life. She trusted you. Replying to this with an excuse or any response will only serve to show people you care more about your appearance than helping your client. I hope today is the last day I pray you two do what is right. I am 87 years old I would like to live long enough to see my goddaughter is not treated worse in this world as a woman than what I have known for most of my life. YOU ARE WOMEN, DO WHAT’S RIGHT!

I"m from New Jersey and I got a speeding ticket in November 2018, 95MPH in a 65MPH zone ( automatic loss of license)coming back from his wedding, they gave me a court date 4 months later, which I missed .I Got a warrant ,contempt of court, Loss my NC DL priviledges ,loss of NJ DL priviledges, $300.00 fine and still had the ticket! With one phone call to jane and such a super reasonable fee within 1 week Brian got everything dropped all suspensions reversed warrants vacated, fines dropped and original ticket reduced to 74 in a 65 and a minimal fine! He saved me MORE money than I pd him.And I never met him and he fought like a tiger, him and Jane treated me like family the whole time! The best traffic attorney in North Carolina BY FAR. Scott is a straightforward, trustworthy, and fast-acting solution to your law-related needs. At the start of my case, what he said would happen, happened. He doesn't beat around the bush, so if he tells you your case will turn out a certain way. Then that is the way it'll turn out. His fees are provided to you with proper notice, and they're dead accurate so no need to worry about any sudden bills. He will happily answer any and all questions you may have, and doesn't make you wait for a response. Given he is most definitely the busiest traffic attorney on this end of the state, it's awesome that he still takes the time to confront any concerns or queries you present in a timely manner. 10 out of 10 experience! Thank you Scott!

I met Mark by chance outside the Durham County courthouse the day before my traffic violation court date. We had a lengthy conversation about the case and, while waiting for him to conduct other business, I had a chance to observe the goings on in court. I hired Mark and he immediately got to work, even working into the night (the 1:30 am text let me know). The outcome achieved in court was, I believe, the best possible. I will recommend Mark to friends, and I will retain his services if needed in future.

Mr. Simeon gave me free legal advice many years ago in regards to a DWI/ POSS charge. Represented myself and prevailed on both charges! $25 for a seatbelt ticket and I was adjudicated! This man fights for the people!

I first retained Mark Simeon 15 years ago, referred by my auntie. He handles all the traffic tickets for my whole family. We all knew he was an excellent lawyer, but after what he just accomplished for my fiancé, I must say he's the absolute BEST!! Long ago, some people in town started calling him "Houdini" because he can make license suspensions disappear off drivers' records. Now I see why -- my finance's license was suspended PERMANENTLY, several time over, and now, all the PERMs are gone! It took some time, and honestly, more money than we can afford, but it was so, so worth it. Simeon has a system, and it works. I hear he recently started a nonprofit law firm for NC driver license restoration so that he can help people who can't afford him. Let's hope they get the grants and donations they need to stay afloat because it's too many people out here driving on revoked licenses because they just don't have the money for lawyers like him. Anyway, Mark Simeon gets my top vote. I'd give him ten stars if I could!

I'm so glad that a friend recommended Lee Olive when a needed an attorney. Attorney Olive and his paralegal Mariely Bermudez were wonderful to deal with as I went through the litigation process. Attorney Olive was calm, confident and caring as he explained all aspects of the process and effectively championed my case, while respecting my decisions and circumstances. Mariely was warm, positive and energetic, making sure all the details were handled efficiently and effectively. I was in good hands from start to finish and I would highly recommend this firm to anyone.

Jordan Morris is an extremely professional Attorney who keeps the best interest of her client(s) at the forefront of her focus. Her dedication is second to none. I dealt with another firm and it was difficult to get progress with my case. The Attorney was not as responsive nor determined to ensure a fair outcome was sought after. Once Jordan became my Attorney my mind was at ease. Through various phone calls, emails and personal encounters she was easily approachable and extremely patient. Her direct and passionate approach sets her apart from other Attorneys and firms. I would rehire her if needed without pause. My daughter was fought for; I was fought for. My Toddlers’ voice was heard through Jordan’s voice in court and I am eternally grateful for the outcome of all of her effort and dedication to my case. A MUST hire.

Mr kimble is one of the best lawyers I've had in regards to the criminal justice system, I live in Illinois and had just moved to fayetteville NC. I being deemed indigent the courts appointed him to represent me in my court matters, I tell you he went to bat for me the prosecutor tried to give me prison time for a simple assault but he stood up for me and told the judge that I didn't even had as so much as a scratch on my record as far as violence and because of that I received unsupervised probation and the other charges was dismissed. I was not use to that "always off to prison was my outcome" .And today I am living a life as a productive citizen, giving back to the community.

I hired Mr Byers to represent me in a Civil Litigation where I was sued for payments on a vehicle were not being made by the person suing me. She wanted me to pay her back payments she never made plus some. Mr Byers was very confident he presented evidence that he dugged up. I didnt have to do nothing but sit there and watch him work. He asked her questions and she just stumbled over the lies she was trying to keep up with. He made her attorney look like a fool. Needless to say we won. She lost. I am a person that panics over everything but he made me feel confident and relaxed while he handled everything. I would definately hire Garland Byers Jr for any case I was involved in. He is wonderful.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
