We contacted Matthew about an incident with one of our children. Matthew was clear, concise and very empathetic with my child’s concerns and issues. In fact, he was great in making our family feel better and helped us understand different action plan scenarios. I feel he is very trustable and also trustworthy. Thank you!

After determining that the only viable option for us in a dispute with our neighbor, was hiring an attorney, we found Mr. Hammond thru search engines and reviews. Our choice to go with Mr. Hammond fit our situation well. Mr. Hammond had a very calming and reassuring presence, that helped greatly with navigating us through this process. He was honest with what to expect and came up with some very creative and resourceful options for us to consider. His knowledge and understanding was greatly appreciated. We would have him represent us again, if needed. S. Schroeder, Oregon

I was referred to Clay through a business associate and friend who has very high standards for professional services. I was not disappointed! Clay was thorough in talking me through the process, his prices were fair, and his communication was excellent. He did an excellent job of dealing with an insurance company that was not only looking out for its own best interest, but was also very negligent in responding to us in a timely manner. I would definitely recommend him to others!!

I had been been in car accident where the driver was under insured and I had to make claim against my uninsured motorist coverage. My insurance company started jerking me around with unnecessary treatments and less than recommended treatments that were not helping me until my pip coverage ran out then tried to deny my claim all together. That is when I obtained the services of Mr. Clay MacCaslin. He took over and helped me navigate my way through doctors appointments, depositions and taking my insurance company to court. I could not of asked for a better outcome and got my maximum amount I was entitled to for my coverage and now I can get my medical bills paid with a little in my pocket. it has been a long hard road and I am very happy with the results and I would recommend to anyone the services of Clay MacCaslin. Thank you!

I tried to talk to Nik a few times about a legal issue I've been going through with my employer. On top of this, I was wanting to discuss just my rights in general as an employee and other things. I had emailed Nik a couple times and he didn't respond but I was determined to have ONE lawyer in Portland talk to me as a trans person. I paid Nik $100 ahead of time and wrote up the intake form with info all about what I was dealing with and other issues I was seeing in the trans community. I wanted help and to get what info I could out of a one hour session to help as many people as I could. Nik refused to help because I hadn't met a criteria but he also didn't read or acknowledge any of the details or questions I added to the intake form. He just offered to refund me and did. I just wanted help. I dont want to grieve more friends because of shitty employers. I did get fired while on leave. I also got threatened with a 10 page psychotic letter calling me uncivil. This work ordeal put me into an IOP due to a suicidal ideation in June and I can't get anyone but my spouse to care. That's why the suicide rate is 41% for trans people. I don't wanna add to that but when it feels like you have people who specifically represent LGBT clients they'd show some empathy for them. Idk. It doesn't matter. I don't recommend Nik.

Yadira Ramirez is an excellent attorney. I was blindsided by false sexual assault allegations. Yadira was always calm, cool and collected. I felt she had my best intentions. She had a lot of patience when I got angry or upset because I didn't understand how the courts work, or how lawyers communicate with the courts, and also the laws. I felt more at ease once when she thoroughly explained how court proceedings take place. Although, I could not ever be fully at ease because of the implications in my case. We had evidence that showed my innocence. But even with that, I still felt anxiety because of how inconsistent the courts in America are. Yadira could have told me that I had a airtight case and that we were going to win in court. But she was honest and said that courts are unpredictable and that she can't guarantee a victory. Which I understand. But she also said that we do have good evidence and that would show favorably for me in court. Court was set for a Friday, and on Monday my accuser decided she wanted a consent agreement. I did not know what that was, and Yadira thoroughly explained what it was. The first draft of the consent agreement their attorney sent Yadira was bogus and unfair. Yadira told me to stand firm and not accept the terms. Yadira redlined the document an added language in my favor. Their side sent back another agreement, and Yadira once again said to stand my ground and not accept it... So finally 2 days before we're supposed to go to court. My accuser and her attorney caved and gave in to our terms and a much more favorable consent agreement, which ended up in a dismissal of my accuser's restraining order against me... I was extremely anxious and nervous the entire time, 3 months of absolute hell. Yadira gave me my life back and restored a little faith in the legal system. There are lawyers out there that 100% care about their clients and Yadira is absolutely one that cares. I recommend Yadira for any legal matters regarding restraining orders. Thank you Yadira

Thomas Ybarra is a highly organized and knowledgeable attorney and I'm so grateful for his attention to detail when it came to my divorce proceedings. He was always honest with me about what to expect and also heard me when I told him what I wanted/needed. He was able to successfully argue my position for sole custody of my two children, secure me spousal support and child support, and negotiate an agreement that allowed me to keep my house. His attention to my case was constant and I could always get ahold of him when I needed advice. I highly recommend Mr. Ybarra's counsel if you are looking for representation in a divorce or child custody case. He knows the law and is able to explain how the process works. He made my very volatile divorce bearable and having him in my corner was a complete godsend. No one truly wins in divorce, but in my case he got me a big win on paper. Grateful for his representation.

I am careful with money, and lawyers are expensive. I brought Mr. Perriquey a seemingly complex set of documents for review. Lake took the time to make me understand his informed opinion. Mr. Perriguey took the time to understand my uninformed concerns. While Lake's efforts are painstaking, he is also efficient. In summary, Mr. Perriguey provides value far in excess of his fees.

My husband and I found ourselves having to sue a family member over real estate. It was just awful for us. We had never needed an attorney before, so we didn't even know where to start! With a cold call I found Lake. Wow did we get lucky! Lake provided us with guidance and integrity throughout the process which was quite complicated. He explained the lawsuit process clearly to ensure that we understood how it all works. He filed all the documents through the court and corresponded with the opposing attorney in a timely manner. He also made himself available to me when I was feeling especially low, making me feel better. We were able to work out a deal that worked for both us and our relative. We are so grateful to Lake for getting us through this!

I hired Michael Owens and Christina Stephenson as a team to represent me in an employment dispute. Life is certainly not fair and not every dispute requires legal intervention, but when it does the fallout is typically ugly. When I first hired Michael and Christina to look into a Whistleblower retaliation claim, I was reeling from the aftershocks and uncertainty of an unfair termination just days before Christmas. Would I lose my house? Would I be able to afford to keep my child in school? How would I regain my confidence that I could find a job where I wouldn't be punished for trying to do the right thing? This isn't the state of mind from which a person typically has the presence to right a wrong or set the record straight and the law provides some remedy, but on a pretty tight timeline. Michael and Christina both took the time needed to listen, understand the case, and sort the legal issues involved from perception and emotion. They were able to help me understand the difference between what is illegal and what is unfair and to direct me to seek the appropriate remedies for each. When it came to what was illegal, they were perceptive, smart, organized and thorough in their review and presentation of the facts. When it came to what was unfair, they respectfully listened, but also encouraged me to continue seeking the remedy of time and introspection to heal. In this way they were skillful advocates. Knowing that they were capably handling the legal arguments related to my values of transparency, efficiency and accountability allowed me to shore up my life, make sure my child and home were safe and to process what had happened. Prior to ever pursuing a legal remedy for a dispute, I would caution anyone to ask if your values compel you to spend years reliving something unfair and disruptive to your life. If the conclusion you reach says, "I couldn't live with myself if I didn't do this," then you would be lucky to have the professional, capable and kind representation of Michael Owens and Christina Stephenson.

I hired Mr. Owens to help me prepare my case for an unemployment benefits appeal hearing. His input was invaluable in helping me put together a very solid and concise case to prove my side of the story. He was clearly an expert in the state employment code, and pointed me to the most important and relevant statutes to my case therein. He also showed that he really cared about me and the results of my case, and was conscientious about follow-up. I would highly recommend Mike Owens to anyone in need of an employment attorney.

Mike was a fantastic resource to have in my corner! With his skillful representation, I was able to obtain a positive result that I would have had no chance of reaching otherwise. Mike is sharp-minded, very ethical, and personable. He made me feel validated and supported, with an honest and realistic approach to explaining how the law views the issues. He never pushed me toward a particular decision, but rather made sure that I completely understood all of my options at all times, and provided his best recommendations so that I could decide myself. Mike truly cares about fighting for the best possible outcome for each individual, whatever that takes. His fee structure is fair, and made representation accessible to me. I can't thank him enough for his help! Thank you, Mike!!!

I can't thank Daniel Snyder and his team enough for helping me through the most traumatizing experience in my career. Living with a disability is already difficult itself, but then to have an employer that discriminates against you is devastating. I worked for a public agency that denied my ADA accommodations and engaged in unfair labor practices. I was chronically treated differently, unfairly and badly by my employer and after filing a BOLI complaint, they retaliated against me leading to my termination. Daniel Snyder came highly recommended and did not disappoint. Feeling hopeless, I scheduled a consultation with Mr. Snyder. Immediately I felt supported and I knew he was the right attorney to help me. Dan is a straight shooter and follows through with what he says. He was not intimidated to represent me against a public agency of attorneys. He is confident and will go above and beyond the call of duty leaving no rock unturned. Because of his hard work and excellent legal tactics I was able to get justice! Thank you Dan and team for your support. I absolutely encourage anyone that is seeking an attorney that will have your back to choose, DANIEL SNYDER!

I was enrolled and through 2 years of my graduate program for a Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree while in the final term, registered to graduate and with a 3.24 GPA. I was ready to walk across the stage to complete my life's dream and then become a therapist. I was kicked out abruptly without reason or incident, and it was shortly after a medical event. I immediately started the search for a lawyer and connected with Daniels assistant, Paul, who was right away able to connect Dan with me, who took down all the relevant details. Nearly two years later, Dan has personally represented me and took my life back from those that injured me. Throughout the entire time of representing me, Dan would personally email me within seconds to minutes of my communication, it was incredible. He was confident and knowledgeable, organized and tactful and intelligent, absolutely the caliber of person who should have a role dealing with laws and justice. The two parties that were against me both had no choice but to settle, and I am now living my life more healthy and happy than I have been in many years, and I owe much of this to Dan and his law offices.

Unsure and unclear of my case. Dan’s firm took my case and went to work. Never did they give up or throw the towel in. My case went on for over four years. Bronson James is the attorney that the Super 100 attorneys go to for expert legal advice. A noted authority in both Federal and Oregon criminal law as well as an expert appeal tactician Mr. James’ legal opinion is also asked for by Court Judges prior to their rulings. Mr. James was on the “short list” for consideration as one of Oregon’s state Appellant Judges. Justly earned as he successfully argued the 2014 U.S. Supreme Court case Riley v. California as counsel for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Brennan Center for Justice. In this landmark Supreme Court decision, national law enforcement officers now can no longer search cell phones without a court ordered search warrant based upon probable cause. I was fortunate to have Mr. James on my legal defense team as he was able to recommend and negotiate the best possible outcome for my case based on his legal acumen and professional reputation. I most strongly recommend Mr. James either as your primary defense council or to work with your primary defense council during trial to prepare the strongest appeal case if necessary. Mr. James is one of those few professional attorneys who can give you your life back.

I hired Kevin Lucey after a recommendation from a music business attorney I occasionally work with. Turned out to be a great choice as Kevin led me through this agonizing process with great efficiency. Kevin Lucey is an expert with dealing with these hard to deal with insurance companies. Insurance companies would be perfectly happy to offer nothing for someone in a personal injury situation and Kevin navigated and handled the claim in a timely and efficient manner. I can't imagine having to try and deal with them myself. My gut reaction when I spoke with the claims adjuster was that they were going to try and screw me as best they could. Kevin knows how to deal with insurance companies and I highly recommend him!

Mr. Burgess and his team provided exceptional service and, frankly, unexpected positive results in a Federal Whistleblower Retaliation case just over a year ago. Due to Mr. Burgess, determination, knowledge, and artful management of the hearings, we prevailed. In addition, Mr. Burgess negotiated an acceptable settlement to a separate Discrimination complaint (EEOC) brought against the same Federal agency. These cases are complex and quite difficult with the purse and legal infrastructure of the Federal Government stacked up against plaintiffs with limited resources. Mr. Burgess took the Federal government to task twice, on my behalf, and prevailed both times. Mr. Burgess passion was evident throughout the process. Mr. Burgess' remarkable oratory skill was on full display during extemporaneous closing remarks where he pulled together two days' of witness testimony and key points from hundreds of pages of evidence to close the door on the Federal attorneys' arguments. When Mr. Burgess finished, the opposing team looked resigned and simply shook their heads. I recommend Mr. Burgess to anyone who needs representation in his areas of expertise. I will certainly seek his counsel again if I am ever in need of legal representation. Thank you John. You are a very good attorney and I appreciate your professional ability. More importantly, I appreciate your compassion and support through a very difficult and lengthy process. Your belief in me and the fact that you took the time to listen and empathize made all the difference. Thanks for taking the time to be real.

His timely case updates kept me informed of all relevant developments, and he would not act with out first consulting with myself. Strategy development with consideration for contingencies was one of Mr. Nixon's most impressive qualities. At no point during our time together was he without an idea or backup plan. He implemented his strategies wonderfully and never lost focus of the end goal. As an officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine, I pride myself in being able to recognize professionalism, a quality clearly present in Mr. Nixon. It was pleasure working with him on this case and I will not hesitate in seeking his assistance in the future.

Michael has a great sense of self. He is aware of both his capabilities and limitations. He excels at organization and community strategy and has the ability to fashion the appropriate legal strategy and approach to fit the situation at hand. As the Chief Executive of my organization it was extremely difficult to navigate and separate all of the key issues. Prior to working with Michael I did not have an effective sounding board for the issues that I was dealing with, so it was extremely helpful to have a non biased sounding board in Michael who understood the dynamics related to both the organizational, political and legal issues involved. Other lawyers advised that the issues that I was dealing with were to complex for them to touch. They all recommended Michael. It was an excellent choice.

Sherrill got a call from me about a case where my privacy had been breached. Even though she could not assist with my situation, since her legal expertise was in a different field than what I actually needed, she went out of her way to reach out to associates she might be able to recommend and called me back right away to inform me of next steps I might take.

Ms. Snyder is an extremely competent attorney. She was always in touch with my case, went out of way to speak with me directly, (rather than have her staff make the calls) and always kept me informed of the status of my case. I can not express how pleased I am with the outcome of my case. I could not be happier. I highly recommend Ms. Snyder to anyone that is looking for an attorney. She will stand up for your rights.

For anyone considering litigation to resolve an issue you’re having with a larger entity, do consider consulting Atty. Megan Lemire at Lemire & Hirano for some frank and practical advice. Her firm handled our civil case last year in Portland, and the matter was favorably resolved in roughly six months. The closure of the matter now allows my family to move on to bigger and better things. But I have to mention that the process was nearly “painless,” thanks to our attorney’s familiarity with the system. Because of her prompt communications and follow up with us, we always felt in control. The defendants came a long way from pretending that we didn't exist and hoping that we'd just go away to apologizing and writing a couple of checks for our troubles. Despite the mess that brought us toward the halls of justice, we emerged victorious, elevated and restored after our plan of remedy was devised and executed by the talented and wonderful Megan Lemire.

I had spoken to two other attorneys before I found Ashlee. I searched for my specific issue, employment law, and chose Ashlee based on the reviews of others. They were not wrong. Ashlee speaks to you as a person and is sincerely interested in helping you. The legal system is complicated and frustrating, but having Ashlee on my side was key to the positive outcome of my situation. She dealt very professionally with the parties involved and was always clear with me as to what was going on and what was next. She was helpful and supportive in helping me to be realistic with my expectations and how the process works. I am very happy with the outcome and would highly recommend anyone who needs employment law advice to give Ashlee a call.

I contacted this firm for help after my boss fired me unfairly. Only the intake assistant contacted me and told me to meet with Ms Albies would cost $350 for a consultation and to fill out the BOLI questionaire on my own. I wanted advice on how to proceed with that for the best outcome, but having just been fired unfairly I did not have $350 to pay Ms. Albies. After this, I feel they are more concerned about money than helping me. I do have a legitimate discrimination case here and truly need help from an attorney, not an assistant! I can't honestly recommend someone who isn't willing to try to help me.

Ashlee is wonderful. I was involved in an age discrimination lawsuit. I was warned by many people that age discrimination is a very tough thing to prove. Ashlee decided to take on my case. We were up against a big corporation. There were times when I thought "What am I doing". Ashlee would look at me and say "They did you wrong". She worked extremely hard on my case. I used to be intimidated by lawyers. I'm not intimidated anymore. Ashlee is my friend. I'm so happy justice has been done in my case. I could keep on writing about how wonderful this lady is. I would truly recommend her.

Amanda represented me after I was selectively pulled over by police when driving away from an animal rights-related protest in Beaverton, OR. The protests had become a regular occurrence, and police in the area had started responding with various forms of threat and intimidation, mostly utilizing the legal system. At that point, there had been some arrests, but one tactic the police adopted was pulling people over as they left the protest under random pretenses in an effort to harass protesters and stick them with fines. Their logic was to increase the cost of protesting, hoping to deter through the bureaucracy of the legal system. I had been targeted by the police and pulled over multiple times. I wanted to challenge one of the tickets I received, for "improper signaling", and Amanda represented me in a challenge against the city and the police. After requesting discovery and making it clear that this little traffic violation would be turned into a political case to investigate the city's complicity in quelling protected speech, the City Attorney decided to drop charges. Thanks to Amanda, we were able to mitigate the threat against activists and show the city of Beaverton that they couldn't arbitrarily use the police so easily and not face consequences and challenges. She was a pleasure to work with and a true advocate for activists.

I was unexpectedly arrested at a protest and charged with several misdemeanors as a result. I wanted to fight the case as I felt the charges were unfair, but I needed an attorney who could understand the scope of my situation and be willing to fight for me without pressuring me to accept a plea. I was so lucky to have found Amanda. She fully understood my concerns and helped me mount the best possible defense I could have. She patiently walked me through all the steps, advised me of potential outcomes, and calmed me when I was stressing. I am extremely grateful that there are good lawyers like Amanda.

Amanda Schemkes! Is an incredible defense attorney. She is well-paced, thoughtful, intentional and humble. For my case, she took all potential legal avenues into account and made the safe and effective legal decisions for my well being. After chaining myself to that Arctic Challenger in defense of a livable climate and healthy arctic, I received a $20,000 fine from the USCG. To defend me, Amanda was able to compile a 17-page necessity-defense speaking to the subsistence needs of the Inupiaq people, The Climate and the sensitive ecological systems of the Arctic. Her work brought my fine down to a manageable $5000 dollars, which my community will be able to raise. Amanda, is an amazing person to work with. She is professional, responds to emails, keeps track of time-lines, is available for questions, is an effective listener and always asks the right questions. If you are looking for a lawyer to support you in pushing boundaries Amanda is a great person for the job.

If I had to use one word to describe my experience with Levin and Levine I’d say MAGNIFICENT!! Cameron and Michelle are truly some of the best people ever. Very patient, understanding, always willing to help you understand something (because legal vocabulary is confusing sometimes lol) and just over all very good lawyers. I appreciate that they see the human side of things and not just the black and white of it all. I’d definitely recommend them if I were asked about who I think is good representation. What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
