Catherine Clayton represented me in a case of family law. It was a complex and high stress case involving domestic and international issues. She was knowledgeable, organized, diligent, meticulous, as there were many intricate details, and pleasant to work with. She remained steady in an unsteady and challenging situation. The outcome was highly satisfactory and I would recommend her without reservation.

I have worked with a few attorneys over the past 15 years. I worked for a law firm when I was in school. I've seen good attorneys and I've seen pathetic ones. No one is perfect, so I offer this review with an open mind. When I first hired Ms. Clayton, she was on top of things and represented me very well. As time passed, she stopped returning my calls and emails. Her office was quick to send me a bill, but when I paid my retainers in lump sums it seemed that my account balance statements were lost in the mail. To this day, I can't even obtain an account balance (2 years later). I was a model client. I always paid up front and never missed a payment. I'm not sure what happened, but she fizzled out and now I have to look for new counsel. It's unfortunate, too, because I worked a second job in order to afford Ms. Clayton's rates. What do I have to show for it? Nothing. If you want nothing, then hire her.

I filed with them months ago and I’ve never been able to get a hold of my attorney. I’ve called countless times today and someone keeps picking up and hanging up the phone. Worst attorney you'll ever talk to on the phone. I never hired him. I only did a really weird phone call. His conversations made little sense. He intensely started integrating me. I was just calling to see if I had a case. He got upset with me in a crazy way and hung up on me. This attorney is weird and needs to change.

We hired this man with a cut and dried case with our property .He showed up not once but EVERY time unprepared no paperwork. He is arrogant to the client and rolls up in a ball when in front of a lawyer who actually cares enough to show up in court with the proper documents. He went to a hearing without us ! We lost our home of 34 years .He is a great attorney for the defense! His colleagues seem to talk over him in a court room and have little to no respect fir him or his capacity to present or defend a case .We filed a complaint with a higher court and hope this man is is given proper discipline.Dont do it! He us not better than nothing.

Paid HALF my retainer fee yet they refused to help me postpone a court date until ALL $1500 was applied to them. Had another charge and the second I mentioned it, applying more money or even more work to help me, the attorney cut me off and said they’d be returning my retainer and pretty much not taking my case. Never in any case I’ve ever had have I been treated in such a manner having No previous convictions. I DO NOT recommend them.

Mr. Clayton consulted me on a bankruptcy that I desired to file. I went into his office and met with him. He advised me about the class I needed to complete prior to filing. He was very polite and courteous however he lacked professionalism when it came to follow up. I contacted Mr. Clayton several times to follow up on my next step as instructed. He was running for a political office was out of his office and unavailable and never returned my calls. I had been behind on my mortgage and other household expenses and needed legal counsel and Mr. Clayton did not provide me with the professionalism I needed through communication on how to resolve my legal matter. I would not recommend this lawyer.

I was sued by a client for silent hung that I did not do. Attorney Clayton successfully litigated the case in my defense as a result of his expertise, the case was dismissed and justice prevailed. Since that time he has been our company attorney. I must say that in every case I have been more than pleas with his knowledge of the law. I have recommended him to colleagues, friends and family alike.

Absolute crap. They don’t care about the people. What a scam what a joke. I wonder if they even take any cases. Horrible. Just horrible. I’m saying this from experience with them. I spoke to one of their so-called representatives or want to be lawyers. They agreed to take my case and then 20 days before my hearing they said oh no, we can’t take it. This is for a simple divorce. No assets not contested divorce. Why tell someone you’ll take the case? Don’t let them ruin you too. If my tax dollars go to help fund them, I’m gonna be really upset!!!

Not sure how anyone qualifies for legal aid when their income eligibility for a family of 4 is 25,000 a year. Then when I asked about debt to income, bills, and child support etc was met with incredible hostility and rudeness. That is well below the poverty line. You would have to be homeless to qualify for their services according to the rude woman I spoke with.

This lawyer wouldn't help a me get child support that I havn't received in four years from their deadbeat dad because I owed him 750 dollars. Knowing that after he'd help me he'd get his precious money since making over 150,000 a year isn't enough and that 750 is a Mercedes payment. Also, wouldn't respond until the court case was a week out so now I have to find a new lawyer on short notice.

I thought I was being represented by someone I could trust and knew would work for me. Mike did not keep me informed, failed to return my calls/emails/voicemails and then avoided me intentionally for days because he knew (from his assistant) that I was aggrevated with his lack of communication. He made a simple uncontested divorce drag on and on when he knew I was on a time limit. After a motion to set on Monday he didnt even attempt to contact me until Friday afternoon. I missed his call and returned it 10 minutes later (because I was at work) and he was gone and on vacation the whole next week. I asked to set up a morning appointment when he returned and his assistant said he wasn't taking any appointments the next week in attempt to catch up. His lack of communication and cooperation actually caused my incredibly irresponsible ex and I to work together to get the process done. Not worth the money, time or frustration.

I hired Mr. Summers to represent me for a DUI charge in East Ridge court. He was in the media a lot at the time and seemed to be one of the best attorneys in our area. Definitely very knowledgeable. From my experience he does a cattle call on a Saturday morning and has all of his potential customers show up so he can do his dog and pony show. He has everyone show up at the same time and you just wait until he calls you in. I felt like he was a car salesman and really trying to sell himself to me. Well, it worked because I hired him. Of course I paid an extra fee for him having to come to court on a Tuesday night. With that I ended up paying his total fee off prior to my first court appearance with him. That night he had several clients. I watched one by one as he called them into the hall to discuss the case and then come back to talk to the judge. He never called my name so I went out to him in the hall. He asked my name, I told him what it was and he started walking away from me to another client. I went back up to him and asked what was going on. He got angry with me and said that he runs a business and that in order for him to operate his business he needs his clients to pay him. He was a real jerk the way he was talking to me. Then I got pissed and told him he needed to check his records because I had fully paid him. I pulled the receipt out of my wallet and he was stunned. His attitude changed. He represented me and I was convicted of a 1st offense when it was technically my 2nd. Not sure if I could have done any better since it was all done in East Ridge. The icing on the cake was getting a letter from him a couple weeks later asking for basically a "bonus" check for achieving what he called favorable results. I didn't owe it and he didn't deserve it. I personally believe there are better attorneys to work with out there other than Mr. Summers.

This is a relatively new lawyer who thinks he knows everything situation. He has a lot to learn and has very little experience. He is older and new so that is misleading. When you look at him you would think he is seasoned but he is not. Just look up his info on the board website. At times you will find him pleasant and a bit organized but that falls apart quickly. He is also very goofy not in a good way. He is the timid type and doesn’t appear to feel comfortable rolling up his sleeves and fighting for his clients. He also likes to gossip which I found to be quite the turn off. He bad mouths other attorneys while at the same time trying to “work” with them. I guess it’s because he is from a very small town. He did nothing for me but cause more problems. In my humble opinion I would run to another attorneys office as fast as I could. I think this lawyer would do better as a corporate type attorney that just does paperwork and has little client contact. I mean everyone can do something so I won’t say he is the absolute worst but I certainly would never hire him again. I know a lot more of what to look for in an attorney now.

Absolute waste of money. This man is a disgrace to the legal profession: Never responded to any of my (the client's) correspondence to him. Completely ignored my instructions on when to file motions. Completely ignored my restrictions on billable activities. Made harassing telephone calls to my parents threatening them with contempt of court. Never provided me with any written progress reports. Logan had no experience in defamation law. Tried to drag things out as long as possible. Never filed a motion to dismiss. Filed papers without my consent. When you retain Jimmy Logan, he thinks he has a license to bill. He never did even one thing that would be helpful to me. Disclosed confidential information to opposing counsel. Ran up billings as much as possible for activities that had nothing to do with my case. Very unprofessional appearance. Dragged out the proceedings as long as possible.

Paid a $2,500 retainer for a divorce and next to nothing was done. He billed me within two weeks of paying the retainer, saying it had been used up AND that I owed HIM money for his additional time and expense. During that two weeks, he never called, emailed, or wrote me to let me know what was going on. He never filed anything in my case nor spoke with the other attorney to settle things outside of court. He stole my money! I had to pay another attorney a new retainer to get anything done. I finally got my divorce but wasted $2,500 in the process.

It was quite scary and hard for a 14-year old trans kid to face their rapist and not cry. The process was long and grueling but getting to meet my lawyer and judge before having to testify in front of a group of random people and to tell what he did to me made it much better. I don't think I could bare to do this ever again but the process was worth it.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
