I filed bankruptcy last year 2023. I was told multiple lies in order to get my money (if one is filing bankruptcy then it is fair to say they don't really have the money to begin with). I had a gut feeling after meeting with him that something didn't seem right. It was his lackadaisical attitude towards my situation which I explained to him in 100% full detail, documentation provided. He acted like everything was good and that I could eliminate all of my debt. This did not end up being the case. He told me that my $30,000. Debt from running tolls would be eliminated and I pressed him to make sure. It wasnt..however I wasn't made aware of this until after everything went through and thought I was clear. A couple months later the garnishment started up again. When I pressed him on it, his answer was obviously total b.s. and everything I felt in my gut was true. He was full of it and never really looked into it 100%...but he took my $2000 with a smile. In addition to that he also told me that all of the additional debt I had (which was eliminated) that I would receive reimbursement for all monies paid towards the debts...never happened. No follow up whatsoever. I was in a very tight spot and he knew it, yet still took advantage of me to get my $2000.00 that I obviously really didn't have to give. The only thing that was positive about this experience was his assistant. She was pleasant, helpful, and followed through on everything she was supposed to. No qualms with her (I wish I could recall her name I think it was Miss Sheila??) I would totally not recommend this guy at all. I felt like, as a desperate person finacially, I was totally taken advantage of so he could earn his money. It really makes me feel sick in my stomach to think about it. -Matt Shepperson Powhatan, VA P.s. if you're from powhatan don't go with the convenience of the location. Find someone else that will actually take 30 minutes of their time (which you pay for) to actually look into your situation. I was disgusted with his services.

I hired Barry Hodge for a child custody and support case in the Powhatan Juvenile District Court. I spent enough time working with Mr. Hodge and wrote enough pay to the order of Barry Hodge checks to have an opinon and write a review. Unfortunately, a five star rating is not possible because Mr. Hodge quit without finishing the case. Or how Barry put it, I was "fired permanently", as Barry informed me who the boss really was on his way out the door. -1 star Barry Hodge was expensive. His initial retainer and hourly rate were higher than the attorney I hired to replace him.  -2 I will remove another star for efficiency. Cost per what was accomplished was poor. Of course it is not possible to divide by zero, so I will just compare Mr. Hodge's efficiency to the attorney who actually argued my case before a judge and closed it at 1/5 of what I paid Mr Hodge. -3 I did not like working with (or for, since he fired me) Mr. Hodge. I'm sure he feels the same way about me, so this is a draw. Communication was good with both Mr. Hodge and the office. +1 Available for rehire? No. (I was fired permanently, remember)  I would not rehire regardless.  -4 So that explains my one star rating.  If you add -4 and +1 it is actually -3, so don't trust my math in this review. In fact, don't trust my review at all. This is just my rant for the way my case went only,  and not against Barry Hodge or Barry Hodge Law Firm PLC in general. I don't wish to discourage anyone from working for him. If there are any doubts to the authenticity of my review, I have over $25,000 in receipts to show what I paid Mr. Hodge and I have his order to withdraw from my case. My name is Lawrence Butler, and I was a client of Mr. Hodge.

Relevant is one of the few law firms that puts customer service fully to practice. They are always upstanding and professional with every interaction my family and I have with them. Mr. Anderson always went above and beyond for any of our needs. Highly Recommend!

Unfortunately, I had a bad experience with Mr. Anderson. I had contacted Relevant to speak to an attorney about my matter to determine if I had a case. At the very beginning and throughout our consult, he failed to listen to my story and provide proper legal advice, instead, he continued to question me like I was the defendant on trial. He was extremely rude and accusatory. Mr. Anderson continued to elude to the fact that I was a liar even though he had not listened to my full story. If I did not know specific terms because the area of concern was not my specialty, he would chastise me and state that he didn't understand or never heard of it. I thought the very reason for contacting an attorney was for him to provide the legal expertise needed in that specific field? I was completely shocked, because the customer service to schedule my consultation was a positive experience. I had debated for a while about writing a review, but I know how much I rely on the reviews from others so I had decided to submit one. Overall, the attorney's behavior and demeanor during our consult was disappointing and unprofessional.

They are very helpful in their process, from first contact to the initiated free consultation. They take the time to understand your situation. They gave me several options on how to proceed and without charging me to discuss them. They were very professional and I would recommend them simply for the ease of conversation with their friendly and knowledgeable staff. If I do decide to make a case and utilize these services, I will use the Relevant Law firm! Thank you!

I cannot thank Johnson and Masumi enough for their outstanding assistance with my green card application. After receiving a request for evidence (RFE), I was anxious and unsure of how to proceed. Their team stepped in with experience, professionalism and genuine care, guiding me through every step. They meticulously prepared my response to the RFE, ensuring every detail was addressed, which ultimately led to the approval of my case. Thanks to their hard work, I now have my green card. I highly recommend them to anyone in need of immigration assistance. They truly go above and beyond to deliver results!

I cannot recommend Johnson & Masumi, P.C. enough for their exceptional expertise, professionalism, and dedication to their clients. They handled my complex I-751 case with the utmost care and precision, demonstrating a deep and thorough understanding of immigration law. From the very beginning, their team was meticulous in ensuring that every detail of my case was covered. They made sure every “t” was crossed and every “i” was dotted, leaving no room for error. I also appreciated their proactive communication; I was kept updated on the progress of my case every month, which gave me confidence and peace of mind during what could have been a stressful process. Their comprehensive preparation and strategic approach ultimately led to the approval of my case, and I’m thrilled to have recently received my 10-year green card. I am incredibly thankful for their hard work, attention to detail, and commitment to my success. If you’re seeking immigration attorneys who are not only knowledgeable and reliable but also genuinely invested in achieving the best outcome for their clients, Johnson & Masumi, P.C. is the firm to choose. They exceeded my expectations in every way, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

I used this firm in particular as I needed someone who understood military divorces/laws and they certainly have that experience! They are honest, professional and I am very pleased with the services I received. I would absolutely use them again in the future if needed.

Mariah and Rossimar helped me through my contempt and custody matters. They are both amazing and I absolutely recommend them. They made sure to explain everything to me in detail and what options were available, all while respecting the time (money) it took to respond to all my many questions. Over the years I met with a few different attorneys for this matter, but did not feel comfortable with any of them until I met with Mariah for my consultation with Livesay & Myers. I’m so glad I decided to go through with the legal proceedings and am very happy with the representation that I had. Very personable, knowledgeable, and worthwhile.

When I say Mr. Simms is a phenomenal attorney, I mean that in every sense of the word, phenomenal. He is truly dedicated to his work, and he stops at nothing to obtain the best possibly outcome. I was charged with a petit larceny charge that could have ruined my entire life and that of my family as well as my career. Mr. Simms made a 4 hour trip to represent me, and was able to get me a dismissal! If you want a knowledgeable, kind, hardworking attorney, and an attorney that strives to get a dismissal or not guilty verdict, then Mr. Simms is the attorney you need. He won’t disappoint! Thank you Mr. Simms for not only representing me, but for making the drive to represent me, and for not settling for anything less than a dismissal, and that’s exactly what you got for me. I will be eternally grateful for your devotion to my case, and for getting me the verdict of dismissal. I owe you my life for what you did. Thank you sir for representing me! You’re simply phenomenal in every sense of the word, and your kindness will never be forgotten!

A few years ago, I needed legal help and was reffered to Mr. Allen by a friend. I couldn't be more grateful. He is a professional who not only cares about your legal matters, but also your well being. Down to earth and friendly, Robert prefers to be on a first name basis with his clients. He helped me with a very personal, and rare harassment case against a previous restuarant employer. In such a messy situation, Mr. Allen went the extra mile to protect myself, my reputation and also make me feel comfortable. Not only did he do his research, he even helped me take it up a notch and file a federal complaint. Robert, worked very hard to make sure our demands were met with no excuses. He was always timely with responses and willing to work around my schedule for meetings and phone calls. Mr. Allen even made routine phone call check-ins to make sure the stress from the case wasn't effecting my emotional stability. Robert listened to me and supported me in confidence in every decision, beginning to end. From translating and explaining legal terms to helping me with a payment plan, Mr. Allen was always there for me. Robert's determination, persistence and knowledge resulted in a generous settlement that I couldn't be happier about. He is , honest and genuinely cares. Not only did Robert help me when I had no where else to turn, he also helped me to become a stronger person. I can not thank him enough for the hard work and support he provided during the toughest of times.

All they do is take your money and leave you without representation! I had been charged $410 for a "STRATEGY SESSION" even though they advertise FREE Consultations!! I had to reach out to them one week AFTER I signed all their agreements and gave them the retainer. Right before my meeting with the attorney for a meeting to respond to the courts request, the company FIRED the attorney. They EMAILED me one hour before I was to call into the conference. not even a phone call. WHAT A JOKE! And to make things worse, I had to fight with them to get my retainer back. After many calls and emails, they have yet contacted me for an apology or to return my money "STRATEGY SESSION" that went nowhere. They don't just FIRE someone in the spot. They knew what they were doing way before that day. I'm the one that paid for a service that went nowhere and then had to pay again for a new attorney at a much BETTER firm (should have gone to ROOP XANTTOPOULOS BABOUNAKIS and KLAM PLLC first) Would NOT recommend Melone Hatley at all!!!

The process was simple and I was able to schedule an appointment well within my necessary time frame. My first meeting with Claudia was on a Saturday,  after days and nights of anguish since my husband's sudden and unexpected decision to divorce. My case was complex and I did not understand anything about my rights and the process. Claudia immediately shed light on the situation. When I thanked her for accepting to take my case , she simply said: it is my job. And a job well done it was! Claudia helped me negotiate a fair settlement in a few weeks. Her knowledge of the law, her experience, her understanding of different jurisdictions and different cultures, how she quickly responds to emails and calls, all these things empowered me. I recommend Claudia as a divorce lawyer especially if your case is complicated with multiple jurisdictions involved.

Had a consultation with her and really appreciate the advice and information given. After the consultation I feel empowered and when I’m ready to proceed I will definitely be contacting her. She is a good listener and will be on your side. She knows exactly what she’s talking about when it comes to chewing and spitting out the opposing party especially men that think they’re “above the law”

This was a fantastic experience. I called with questions on how to address possible POA financial mismanagement by another party appointed to an impaired family member. The Firm was very generous providing quality timely pro bono consultation that helped me understand the different legal matters at play and possible Pathways to address. Mr. Roberts also provided a warm handoff (referral) by communicating the main points of our conversation to another firm that could address my concerns more affordably and within their normal scope. The summary about legal points that needed follow up on in estate planning, was clearly explain to me in both the phone call and written referral Mr Roberts sent to the other firm on my behalf. On another note rather than being screened I was surprised that the legal expert picked up the phone himself and got right to business addressing questions. The Firm stands out providing excellent and ethical service, a very welcomed break in the landscape of challenges trying to safeguard a vulnerable family member.

Wish I could give a negative 5 stars! “Jane Lemley” was extremely rude and conceited during our conversation over the phone. “You couldn’t afford me anyways”. I wouldn’t want to hire her or spend a penny on her, even if she was the last attorney in town. Would NEVER recommend this office or Jane Lemley specifically to anyone! There are much more polite & professional attorneys in Winchester, spend your time & money elsewhere!!

I suggest avoiding Charles Billman at all costs. He will take as much money from you and your family as he possibly can (even as a court appointed attorney) and will do as little as he can get away with. He is a horrible lawyer. He gave my partner horrible legal advice, little to no effort/ representation, missed court dates, and this all resulted in my partner going to prison. In my opinion he purposely gave poor legal advice so my partner would be sentenced to prison and Charles Billman would no longer have to work for us (he could turn his attention to scamming other vulnerable people for thousands of dollars and nothing in return.) I personally witnessed and experienced Charles Billman's poor performance in court and his rude attitude towards us for quite some time. He was biased and did not believe in or fight for the innocence of my partner. He is a criminal defense lawyer and acts more like a prosecutor. He put no effort in whatsoever. And was way too friendly towards prosecutors (possible collusion and corruption going on.) He literally did nothing but occasionally show up. He did nothing to defend my partner. He should be ashamed of himself. He is greedy, manipulative, rude, incompetent, a liar, and careless. This law firm should be embarrassed and ashamed for employing him. His legal assistant 'Whitney' is also shockingly rude and offensive. One of the rudest people I've ever met. This law firm, Charles Billman, and his whole team should be investigated for poor performance, bribery, bias, corruption, collusion, incompetence, and fraudulent activities. Shame on you Charles Billman and Harrison & Johnston. My partner and I will never forget how awfully you treated us and failed us and our children. We will never stop fighting for our justice, one way or another.

I 100% recommend using Matt Bass as your attorney. He was patient and knowledgeable about my tickets I received and took my case a couple weeks before my court date. He managed to get 6 out of my 7 tickets dropped (he's a magician) and was very fair on pricing! He answered every question I had an assured me that he would take good care of me, which he delivered on plus some.

Hiring this firm is better than no representation at all but I would think twice in hiring this firm if you have the funds to go elsewhere. This firm has hired lawyers struggling to maintain their good standing with the bar association and then the firm does not disclose that. Anything that could potentially affect a client's case should be disclosed and the firm not disclosing that is unethical. The firm has a poor mechanism for clients to make complaints and to also act on client complaints. The only person you will talk with is an office manager who has no authority to do anything. It's more like they have a person just to hear complaints so the owners of the firm don't have to deal with them. My whole time I hired this firm I felt like I needed to micromanage them. Its not ok for mail from the firm to be sent to the wrong address, for purge orders to be not filed, for clients to get emails and email communications for different clients that have nothing to do with your case, and info needed to be given to court to be not done in a timely manner or not done at all until the client has asked if it's been done. I'm sure the attorney I hired was a kind person and tried as hard as they could but I should have been informed of the situation so I understood how many micromanagings and check ins I needed to do. And the hourly rate for my situation was the same or higher than other legal staffers at the firm. My case had an overall positive outcome but there were errors made. Buyer beware when working with this firm!

My name is Angela Marie Dodd. On 7/15 my former co-worker Mr. Hami, and I had what was supposed to be a consultation with Mr. Cook. This is a wrongful termination case for Mr. Hami. Mr. Hami is From Afghanistan. For those that are patient enough to listen to Mr. Hami, they would find that it is quite easy to understand what he is saying. However, that is not the case for most of the lawyers that we have had consultations with. This is the reason that I accompany Mr. Hami. I do not speak Persian; but I understand what he is saying. I also worked at the same place; and held the same position as Mr. Hami. I was very disturbed by Mr. Cook's attitude and conduct towards myself, and Mr. Hami during our conversation on 7/15. July 15th was the first time that we met Mr. Cook on the phone. This was an Initial conversation. There was no prior discussion between us about anything. The only prior information that Mr. Cook had about Mr. Hami was that he had been given the right sue by EEOC. Having the right to sue from EEOC meant that we were successful in proving to EEOC that some form of discrimination occurred towards Mr. Hami by his former employer. Somehow after asking Mr. Hami two questions about the form of discrimination that Mr. Hami received from his former employer; and having zero information about the details of the actual case; Mr. Cook was able to concluded that Mr. Hami would not be able to afford the $100,000 that it was going to cost to receive legal representation from him. Even after I stepped in and told Mr. Cook that Mr. Hami could afford to retain him; Mr. Cook insisted that Mr. Hami could not. Mr. Cook advised us to seek a lawyer that offered contingency services; and then without ever hearing any details of the actual case - told us that he would not be able to take on the case. What level of discrimination is this?

Outstanding attention to the full history, context and details of the matter by Samantha in the firm. Very patient with me explaining the best options to resolve a contentious estate situation that had gone on for 3 years previously where another very strong firm was on the other side using "low-ball, then delay then obfuscate, then avoid" tactics with my prior counsel. Once formally engaged on the case, Samantha resolved the entire matter w/in approx 4 months for a reasonable fee as well considering the amount of time invested in the process (Expect it to be a process of back and forth and attrition BTW!). I couldn't be more pleased with the firm, Samantha and Kara's professionalism, teamwork or the positive results for my family's future!

I am currently a 1L and I love this law school. Liberty law is an incredible place filled with amazing people. I have already been blessed with some great friendships. The professor's are so helpful and want us to succeed. I could not imagine going to a law school without the christian foundation and encouragement that we have here. Law school is hard any where you go, so the community here helps with that, when life inevitably becomes stressful. It is sad some of these people in these reviews did not have the best experience, but I believe most do enjoy it here.

Regarding Mr. Phillips and his Assistant. The lady and the lawyer are unprofessional. The woman was very rude and falsified information regarding my phone number. I expressed my concerns in a civil manner and she became very defensive and hung up on me. She then admitted another number was on file but tried to claim she never said there was never an additional number. I would not recommend this place and the lawyer never took the time to see they changed my phone number and never returned my call. He sent a letter telling me to do the case myself and without a lawyer.

A bit lacking on customer service and manners. Every time I call them my "hellos", "good mornings" and "have a nice day" are greeted with silence, a hang up click or some snarky response. Do they know they're talking to paying customers? I wonder.... Call me old fashion, but I do appreciate a respectful exchange and greeting. Especially if I am paying top dollar for boilerplate templates I could potentially fill out myself.

Bottom Line - Colleen Haddow is the BEST attorney I could have ever wished for --my only regret is that I didn't start with her from the beginning. Ms. Colleen Haddow came as a recommendation from my previous law firm following failed mediation in a highly complex, contentious, and financially draining divorce and custody case. The opposing counsel - whose professional reputation precedes her as a person devoid of ethics and civility, made finding a willing, capable, and affordable replacement daunting. Colleen personally and immediately took my call for an intake interview. When I opened by informing her of who opposing counsel was, she simply laughed with complete confidence, accepted my case, and immediately got my case moving on the right track. Unlike opposing counsel in this case, Colleen is a legal professional with impeccable integrity and ethics; but not to be confused with someone who submits to bully tactics or shies away from confrontation in or out of the courtroom. In contrast, Ms. Haddow is emotionally intelligent and well versed in the rules of the court to effectively persuade and, if need be, compel cooperation from even the most difficult of personalities. In doing so, she also remained a steadfast, approachable, and responsive attorney (often responding to me within minutes), who consistently addressed my concerns, provided objective perspective, and gave absolute sound guidance amidst the evolving challenges within the case. In short, she kept me sane and grounded in arguably the most stressful and emotionally draining period of my life. In addition to her superior soft skills, Colleen also demonstrated unmatched expertise and experience in distilling and framing the key issues of my case (fully explaining the legalities), to include those I hadn't initially seen, understood, or considered. She proved invaluable in interpreting and exposing financial information, indiscretions, and activities. She was also proactive, strategic, anticipatory, and prepared always and on all fronts. I am convinced that she and her abilities alone are the REASON that ultimately resulted in my case outcome far surpassing my initial expectations from failed mediation, and resulting in a final settlement that exceeded my best-case scenario in court (albeit that she was fully prepared and willing to execute). Colleen saved me thousands in legal expenses, but more importantly, she helped me overcome a series of short-term losses in exchange for an overwhelming long-term gain in my journey to a new and better life. In the strongest terms possible, I highly recommend Colleen Haddow for all family litigation.

In a very emotional state, having been bullied and pushed out of my job after a long career, I found Mr. Dunn and his staff to be exceptional from start to finish. From the initial intake to the conclusion of my case, the professionalism and responsiveness of Mr. Dunn and his knowledgeable staff were outstanding. Anytime I called or sent an email, I received prompt and thorough responses. Broderick was always there to listen and provide advice every step of the way. It quickly became evident that I was going to have a successful outcome, and I did—thanks to Broderick Dunn. He was able to secure more than what we initially sought. I highly recommend him for his expertise and dedication.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
