This is the most difficult law firm to get in touch with. I've been trying to get my case reviewed for a week now. The voicemail company they hired has taken my I go three times now. When I finally got the link, I filled it out and was then sent another text message to fill out another link. I cant with all of these links, so I'm done.

I wish my review could have been favorable; however, Spiggle has made this impossible! The Spiggle Law Firm charges premium prices and provides substandard legal documents. On November 14, 2023, I hired and paid Spiggle $4,000.00 for the trust. They may have called me or emailed me three to four times between November through January, which I why I was confused when I was billed $2,000 on December 18, 2023, and another $2,000 on January 18, 2024. EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS between November and January and they had done nothing, except remind me to provide the information to file the charge. I provided the majority of the initial information, basically a brain dump, which was used in the initial charge. However, when Spiggle combined my document with their template, it appears they didn't include entire sentences, or they merged my sentences with theirs incorrectly, or merged/added sentences non-sequentially, resulting in a lack of flow, riddled with errors. That legal document was sent to EEOC. Fast forward to the rebuttal; I spent MY summer writing my rebuttal based on the voluminous template provided by Spiggle, and once again when Spiggle combined my document with theirs, it was a mess. I corrected the majority of the errors, others I pointed out to them when I returned the document; edits went back-and-forth a few times. As part of my exhibits I included personal videos, an extremely difficult decision to make, but Spiggle felt they were important as well. AFTER my rebuttal and exhibits were submitted to the EEOC, Spiggle then informed me that EEOC's portal couldn't handle the size of my videos. I cannot believe I'm the first of Spiggle's clients that this has happened to! Bottom line, my videos didn't accompany my rebuttal, although they were referenced throughout the rebuttal several times. Upon receiving a final copy of the rebuttal, needless to say, I was shocked to see that Spiggle referenced a different client/person by name in the body of my rebuttal letter, which was sent to the EEOC! In the meantime, I received an email reminding me of my signed agreement to keep $2K in the trust, it was at 0 balance, and I needed to replenish it immediately. I then learned that I was going to receive an invoice for approximately $6K. I requested an itemized invoice and a pause in billable hours while I reviewed the invoice. The invoice I received was not six thousand, but $7,007.00, and many line items listed countless hours of either drafting, reviewing, or revising the rebuttal, as well as several references regarding the video exhibits. This was very upsetting, not that I received an invoice, but by the excessive number of hours billed. The next business day, I received an email from Spiggle closing my case and providing me with an updated invoice, increasing the amount I owed. They close my case at an extremely sensitive and critical point in the process because I questioned their invoice! That certainly doesn't look or feel like the core values of Communicating with Compassion and Empathy. I will be filing a fee dispute through VA State Bar.

Absolutely outstanding legal representation! My lawyer demonstrated unparalleled professionalism, deep expertise, and unwavering dedication throughout my case. Their insightful guidance and proactive approach ensured every aspect was handled with utmost care. They were not only incredibly helpful but also remarkably accommodating, always making time to address my concerns and keeping me informed every step of the way. I suggest avoiding Charles Billman at all costs. He will take as much money from you and your family as he possibly can (even as a court appointed attorney) and will do as little as he can get away with. He is a horrible lawyer. He gave my partner horrible legal advice, little to no effort/ representation, missed court dates, and this all resulted in my partner going to prison. In my opinion he purposely gave poor legal advice so my partner would be sentenced to prison and Charles Billman would no longer have to work for us (he could turn his attention to scamming other vulnerable people for thousands of dollars and nothing in return.) I personally witnessed and experienced Charles Billman's poor performance in court and his rude attitude towards us for quite some time. He was biased and did not believe in or fight for the innocence of my partner. He is a criminal defense lawyer and acts more like a prosecutor. He put no effort in whatsoever. And was way too friendly towards prosecutors (possible collusion and corruption going on.) He literally did nothing but occasionally show up. He did nothing to defend my partner. He should be ashamed of himself. He is greedy, manipulative, rude, incompetent, a liar, and careless. This law firm should be embarrassed and ashamed for employing him. His legal assistant 'Whitney' is also shockingly rude and offensive. One of the rudest people I've ever met. This law firm, Charles Billman, and his whole team should be investigated for poor performance, bribery, bias, corruption, collusion, incompetence, and fraudulent activities. Shame on you Charles Billman and Harrison & Johnston. My partner and I will never forget how awfully you treated us and failed us and our children. We will never stop fighting for our justice, one way or another.

Polite, courteous, welcoming and top notch professional. Mr. Mayfield was able to answer all of our questions, as well as, put us at ease in regard to future legal proceedings. It was Important to us to find counsel who wasn’t condescending and dismissive. Mr. Mayfield was nothing of the sort. On top of it all he encouraged us to call if we had any questions or needed help at any point during our legal matter.

This was a fantastic experience. I called with questions on how to address possible POA financial mismanagement by another party appointed to an impaired family member. The Firm was very generous providing quality timely pro bono consultation that helped me understand the different legal matters at play and possible Pathways to address. Mr. Roberts also provided a warm handoff (referral) by communicating the main points of our conversation to another firm that could address my concerns more affordably and within their normal scope. The summary about legal points that needed follow up on in estate planning, was clearly explain to me in both the phone call and written referral Mr Roberts sent to the other firm on my behalf. On another note rather than being screened I was surprised that the legal expert picked up the phone himself and got right to business addressing questions. The Firm stands out providing excellent and ethical service, a very welcomed break in the landscape of challenges trying to safeguard a vulnerable family member.

Outstanding attention to the full history, context and details of the matter by Samantha in the firm. Very patient with me explaining the best options to resolve a contentious estate situation that had gone on for 3 years previously where another very strong firm was on the other side using "low-ball, then delay then obfuscate, then avoid" tactics with my prior counsel. Once formally engaged on the case, Samantha resolved the entire matter w/in approx 4 months for a reasonable fee as well considering the amount of time invested in the process (Expect it to be a process of back and forth and attrition BTW!). I couldn't be more pleased with the firm, Samantha and Kara's professionalism, teamwork or the positive results for my family's future!

A few years ago, I needed legal help and was reffered to Mr. Allen by a friend. I couldn't be more grateful. He is a professional who not only cares about your legal matters, but also your well being. Down to earth and friendly, Robert prefers to be on a first name basis with his clients. He helped me with a very personal, and rare harassment case against a previous restuarant employer. In such a messy situation, Mr. Allen went the extra mile to protect myself, my reputation and also make me feel comfortable. Not only did he do his research, he even helped me take it up a notch and file a federal complaint. Robert, worked very hard to make sure our demands were met with no excuses. He was always timely with responses and willing to work around my schedule for meetings and phone calls. Mr. Allen even made routine phone call check-ins to make sure the stress from the case wasn't effecting my emotional stability. Robert listened to me and supported me in confidence in every decision, beginning to end. From translating and explaining legal terms to helping me with a payment plan, Mr. Allen was always there for me. Robert's determination, persistence and knowledge resulted in a generous settlement that I couldn't be happier about. He is , honest and genuinely cares. Not only did Robert help me when I had no where else to turn, he also helped me to become a stronger person. I can not thank him enough for the hard work and support he provided during the toughest of times.

Regarding Mr. Phillips and his Assistant. The lady and the lawyer are unprofessional. The woman was very rude and falsified information regarding my phone number. I expressed my concerns in a civil manner and she became very defensive and hung up on me. She then admitted another number was on file but tried to claim she never said there was never an additional number. I would not recommend this place and the lawyer never took the time to see they changed my phone number and never returned my call. A bit lacking on customer service and manners. Every time I call them my "hellos", "good mornings" and "have a nice day" are greeted with silence, a hang up click or some snarky response. Do they know they're talking to paying customers? I wonder.... Call me old fashion, but I do appreciate a respectful exchange and greeting. Bottom Line - Colleen Haddow is the BEST attorney I could have ever wished for --my only regret is that I didn't start with her from the beginning. Ms. Colleen Haddow came as a recommendation from my previous law firm following failed mediation in a highly complex, contentious, and financially draining divorce and custody case. The opposing counsel - whose professional reputation precedes her as a person devoid of ethics and civility, made finding a willing, capable, and affordable replacement daunting. Colleen personally and immediately took my call for an intake interview. When I opened by informing her of who opposing counsel was, she simply laughed with complete confidence, accepted my case, and immediately got my case moving on the right track. Unlike opposing counsel in this case, Colleen is a legal professional with impeccable integrity and ethics; but not to be confused with someone who submits to bully tactics or shies away from confrontation in or out of the courtroom. In contrast, Ms. Haddow is emotionally intelligent and well versed in the rules of the court to effectively persuade and, if need be, compel cooperation from even the most difficult of personalities. In doing so, she also remained a steadfast, approachable, and responsive attorney (often responding to me within minutes), who consistently addressed my concerns, provided objective perspective, and gave absolute sound guidance amidst the evolving challenges within the case. In short, she kept me sane and grounded in arguably the most stressful and emotionally draining period of my life. In addition to her superior soft skills, Colleen also demonstrated unmatched expertise and experience in distilling and framing the key issues of my case (fully explaining the legalities), to include those I hadn't initially seen, understood, or considered. She proved invaluable in interpreting and exposing financial information, indiscretions, and activities. She was also proactive, strategic, anticipatory, and prepared always and on all fronts. I am convinced that she and her abilities alone are the REASON that ultimately resulted in my case outcome far surpassing my initial expectations from failed mediation, and resulting in a final settlement that exceeded my best-case scenario in court (albeit that she was fully prepared and willing to execute). Colleen saved me thousands in legal expenses, but more importantly, she helped me overcome a series of short-term losses in exchange for an overwhelming long-term gain in my journey to a new and better life. In the strongest terms possible, I highly recommend Colleen Haddow for all family litigation.

I was referred to Broderick Dunn by a local attorney and friend, and she undoubtedly guided me to the right person. In a very emotional state, having been bullied and pushed out of my job after a long career, I found Mr. Dunn and his staff to be exceptional from start to finish. From the initial intake to the conclusion of my case, the professionalism and responsiveness of Mr. Dunn and his knowledgeable staff were outstanding. Anytime I called or sent an email, I received prompt and thorough responses. Broderick was always there to listen and provide advice every step of the way. The lawyers of this lawfirm argued this is court "the “unfortunate reality” that teaching in the United States — even for first grade teachers like Zwerner — isn’t without its dangers". At no point should any person considering becoming a teach expect that their future school administrators will brush off an identifiable threat rather than take action. It's a shame that this law firm thinks that teachers should just expect to be shot with a gun by their students. Diane Toscano, Jeffrey Breit, Kevin Biniazan and the school district they represent are morally bankrupt. I will never use them again, and I implore others to do the same.

a while ago, The Manassas court attorney referral department referred me ( for a reasonable of $75.00 or so ) to contact attorney Scott J. Newton. My first meeting with Attorney Newton was great he was very informative on my options to my case that I had won judgement by the court . couple months later I decided to hire Mr. Scott J. Newton and use his services to follow-up and continue my small case. So I went ahead and called his Manassas office, a receptionist answered. I asked her if I could speak with attorney Newton regarding a previous consultation I had with the Attorney, she asked me multiple questions as if she was checking if my case was worth the attorney's time. then i was transferred to a different receptionist, I again asked if I could speak with attorney Newton, then i was transferred back to the first receptionist. I again asked if attorney Newton was available. Her responds was " "Mr. Newton Does recall speaking with you but you will have to schedule an appointment again with Mr. Newton. You will have to pay a fee of $250.00 for your visit again " Wow ! So my personal experience is that, Mr. Newton and his staff are all about their own benefit and not about helping. So I don't think its fair to pay this attorney 250.00 just to fully refresh his memory. I felt this was so unfair, Was it because my case was not as profitable for him ? maybe so..

I hired him for a family member, who went to jail because of his incomepetence. Mr. Lewis: 1. Always have different excuses for cannot present for the court: Visiting people in the jail, Hanover county circuit court, Henrico county circuit court, needs to lock the office, etc... 2. Always lethargic: Not sure was caused by sleep apnea or sth, every time he shows up in court, he will find time to take a nap, this was not professional at all. 3. Never prepare for the case: He will forget everything you told him literally the next day, and he will always bring an empty folder to your court date, pretending take few notes on his "Yellow letter sheets", each time he will bring new blank paper, never combined the notes. 4.Deceptive to his clients, him and his paralegal Raman Kneep tried their best to cover the story that Matt Pinsker was incarcerated for felony sexually assaulted female intern, this was a direct violation of Bar Association code and ethics. 5. Never admitted that he doesn't know anything: He will do his best to pretend everything is under control, and he will back asking you what had happened to cover his nonsense. 6. Procrastination: A single request to him will always takes couple weeks to reply. 7. Not physically fit as a lawyer: Always be stuttered and precarious for how to answer the questions, almost every directions he gave to the clients were detrimental to their fates, he will keep f**k you up until your life is screwed up by the court.

I’m writing this review to help others save money and not waste their time and jeopardize their court cases. Hiring Pinsker Law was the worst decision I ever made. I’d give negative stars if I could. Initially Matt was eager to take my case so I hired him, as he had great reviews. However, soon after I had paid and hired him another lawyer who is well known called me back and warned me that something wasn’t right. As soon as I googled him some charges came up. Matt reassured me that his case was dismissed and everything was fine. So, I begin working with him. Although, he was representing me I wasn’t exactly happy with his service. He just didn’t seem that interested in my case nor did he have the zeal or interests that he had when I first hired him. When it was time to go to court, Matt was a no show. I later found out by his back up lawyer that he had been sent to jail. Again, matt had told me that his case against him was dismissed and he was ok. So that was warning sign number 1. I should’ve requested a refund and hired a new attorney at this point. However, mr. Charles lewis said he’d take over my case in Matt’s place. This was the worst mistake I’ve ever made in my life. Even with all of his credentials and years of experience, Mr. Lewis seemed like newbie and fish out of water when it came to my case. Twice he was unprepared for my case and each time asked for an extension. After the first time I should’ve hired a different lawyer. This was like the 2nd mistake I made. Mr. Lewis made a habit of arriving late to all of my court appearances. At the last court case, he came over an hour late and had the judge and bailiff upset. Not only was he late, but also unprepared per usual. I was pissed!!! He didn’t defend me like we talked about over the phone. It’s like his mind went blank when it was time to represent me. I’m pretty sure a 1st year law student could’ve have defended me better than him. Not only was I found guilty, but I wasted thousands of dollars hiring them. I’ve never heard of pissed poor service like this in my life. I beg of you, please do not make the same mistake I made. I’m writing this to help someone. My experience was nightmarish and like something out of a movie. You will regret it. I’m only writing this because I care about people. You’ve been warned.

Mr. Lewis was professional, knowledgeable and highly responsive to all my questions. He was transparent and and offered encouragement and inspiration. I truly believe without his review and guidance I may not have been given the amazing opportunity I was provided with. I would absolutely recommend his services!

I contacted the firm regarding abusive neighbors. I explained the situation and asked for counsel that did not believe gay persons should be persecuted. I was led to believe an attorney would call almost immediately, as the secretary confirmed there would be no conflict of interest in representation. No one called, and the firm refused to return my calls, and would not take my calls. I have to conclude the firm favors the persecution of gay persons.

I hired him to assist me in a stopping child support order being enforced in VA. No one could figure out has yet to figure out how to stop it even though he was hired to find out what I needed to do. Pretty much wasted my time and money. It was hard to get ahold oh him and sometimes too 3-5 days to get back to me with no new news.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
