I contacted Eric about 4 years ago maybe he was just barely starting but he was the most useless lawyer i have everrrrr met with he dodnt even nnow what to say when he was speaking he took about 20 seconds to respond to their questions and he did nothing in my prt to defend me, he did absolutely nothing, i was devastated because i trusting this man, and i see so many good reviews but why didnt he try even 20 minutes of the court day with my case. If i could fire him i wiuld this was unacceptable and i will never forgive him!!!

I had issues with my newly purchased home, and with the previous home owners/realtor. Therefore I needed someone to help me. I hired Rory, and I highly recommend. He asked me all the right questions, his assistants were pleasant to work with, he used his time wisely with MY MONEY. He sent me biweekly statements, I knew exactly how much money I was using up. Which was helpful for me. He was stern enough with the other lawyers and did everything in a timely matter. He was knowledgeable and thoroughly answered my questions, as anything with laws/regulations are very foreign to me. I appreciate his help, and I recommend him. Thank you Rory and team!

I would NOT recommend Ken Pletcher for anything! I followed all his recommendations and paid him $5,000 yet I went to all 3 of my court dates alone! Before my case was resolved he Quit! Seriously? How can you take my money and do NOTHING and then QUIT!??? My case has been dragging for over a year and is still not over because I had to hire another lawyer. Thanks Ken! I hope you feel good taking all the money I've been saving and then quit on me!

I have hired Steve Porter twice and we prevailed both cases. I watched as he fought to make sure I walked out with the best deal. We had a case that had plenty of proof and he had the opportunity to advise me to not settle, which would have only meant more money for him and a long wait for me but he was honest and chose what was in my best interest. I respect that. If you want someone that will fight hard for your rights and to make you whole again - this is the attorney you should hire.

While I strongly dislike writing poor reviews, I feel an ethical obligation to warn the public about this law firm. Simply put, John Machulak has no communciation skills. The reason I am giving him 3 stars is ONLY because of his administrative assistant. She is his saving grace. She has fantastic communication skills and an amazing work ethic. However, there is only so much she can do. There was no strategy meeting, no set goals/deadlines, emails/phone calls were constantly ignored and I was never coached for arbitration. The day before arbitration (while I was trying to board an airplane to attend the arbitration) attorney Machulak expected me to be able to review and go through evidence for the following day. How am I supposed to do this 33,000 feet up in the air? Everything with him is extremely last minute and then he expects you to drop whatever you are doing and respond to him immediately after ignoring you for days. He clearly demonstrated a lack of respect for my time repeatedly. Billing is extremely confusing. Invoices are very difficult to read, not itemized by hour and not provided in a timely manner. I asked for a current balance the morning of arbitration and he was unable to provide me with one. I asked for paid receipts for bookkeeping and still have not received any. I finally received a huge invoice that I was unprepared for (because it was never communicated with me what he was working on) weeks after arbitration was over. This past 1 1/2 years have been the most stressful of my entire life and working with attorney Machulak made it twice as stressful as it needed to be. It was a favorable outcome, however, a lot of last minute stress could have been avoided, many billable hours could have been saved, and the arbitration could have been MUCH shorter had he simply held an hour strategy meeting with me well in advance to go over evidence and properly prepare for the day.

Attorney Paul Schinner was BEYOND AMAZING!!! Paul was an absolute pleasure to work with. He was so kind and very patient with me, since this was my first time with this type of case. He never once made me feel stupid and answered all my questions to help me understand the process. At one point, I was very discouraged and felt I no longer had a case, but he encouraged me to continue. I'm so glad I did! He was incredibly quick at replying to emails and kept me informed every step of the way. He pulls no punches with the opposition and definitely gets the job done! Paul's extreme knowledge and professionalism is a true and direct reflection of what you will get with Cross Law Firm handling your case. I would very strongly recommend Attorney Paul Schinner and Cross Law Firm...I promise you won't be sorry!!!

Victor is very knowledgeable about the employment laws in WI, very willing to assist. Definitely one of the best attorneys I have ever worked with! And he helped me win my case so he should really receive 10 stars! I am sure I would have lost based on the antics of the judge assigned to my case, who was rude and was only focused on one of the aspects vs looking at the big picture.

Called, asked if he does unemployment consults. He said he does, but that he charges $50 because of the influx of recent calls. He asked me if I knew how many people called him daily and how I got his number (where else but the internet, where he advertises his services?). He seemed uninterested in hearing about my situation despite the fact I was trying (but was repeatedly interrupted) to tell him the $50 fee would be fine. He refused, despite my willingness, to discuss anything over the phone, unless I provide documents via text. I gave him my number, he texted me some required paperwork but then there was a contract to sign. Fair. That's why I'm giving two stars and not one. Because while he was rude, he was open to phone consultation after providing documents. He also gave me a series of links from articles he writes on the current unemployment issues. It's hard to reconcile his vast interest in this issue online, with the curt, borderline-rude, on-phone persona you get when you do call.

Attorney Klein handled my divorce case flawlessly! Although the person I was divorcing made every attempt to make it most difficult to get it done and get equal custody of my child, Attorney Klein and his staff gave me proper advice throughout the entire process. I now am sitting here enjoying the best outcome I could have hoped for. In the beginning I had MANY questions about how things work and the staff was very helpful and patient with me. Looking back to the beginning of the case I have to give them lots of credit for how they handled all my questions at a time when my emotions running high. I highly recommend attorney Klein to anyone looking for someone who will produce results

I hired Mr. Klein after my first attorney failed to prepare for a court hearing and left me to pick up the pieces of a decision so wrong it does not bear repeating. Attorney Klein was straightforward from day one. He did not pull punches. He told me, in exact detail, what I had to do and what he was going to do. He never sugar coated that we had an uphill battle, but not for one second did I doubt he was in the battle with me. I don't need my attorney to pat my head and tell me warm fuzzy stories and give me hugs, I have friends for that. I don't need to walk out of my attorney's office feeling like I just had lunch with my best friend. I need to know, without a doubt, the attorney I hired is on my side 100% and is going to fight with me and for me. I have that with Mr. Klein. His professional staff is prompt and courteous; I have never had to wait days/weeks for a returned call. I know they see this stuff every day, but I never have been made to feel it didn't matter. I have nothing, but respect for Mr. Klein and his staff and would readily suggest his practice to anyone. His professional staff is prompt and courteous, I have never had to wait days/weeks for a returned call. I know they see this stuff every day, but I never have been made to feel it didn't matter.

When I sought a lawyer for my case, I first spoke to a few highly accredited Ivy League lawyers from Madison, and while I was tempted to go with them, they suggested that it might be worth looking into someone local to make things easier on my end. As my family had used the services of Klein’s firm in the past, I decided to seek the counsel of Klein, who asked for a retainer that was twice the amount quoted by the aforementioned lawyers- with travel fees factored in. Now I do not know exactly what it was that he took issue with in me. If I am simply being sensitive, or if it was the details of my case, my age, my race, or just that he did not like the fact that I asked him questions and took notes at our meetings, but he clearly made an effort to be unprofessional in our dealings. Perhaps Klein’s representation can be summarized in a defining phone conversation we had AFTER I had paid him a retainer. I had never personally hired a lawyer before, so I understandably had a few questions about the financial aspects of my case, as well as wanting to go over a few details of my case with my lawyer. After I asked Klein a couple questions about the difference between out-of-pocket expenses and court-fees, he snapped. “What is this, twenty questions?” he yelled into the phone. “You’re wasting my time!” This was funny, coming from a man for whose time I was paying hundreds of dollars for even in this phone conversation alone. He seemed just barely able to restrain himself from cursing at me as he tried to convince me to drop him as a lawyer after I tried to explain that the retainer I paid for was a fair amount for me, and that I just wanted to make sure I understood both the case, and wanted to go over details on expenses: “If you think X dollars is a lot of money, then just come here, and I’ll cut you a… stinking check for X dollars! Stop wasting my time!” This was followed by a few snide remarks (nothing unexpected) directed at me. “I thought you went to college,” he yelled. “You should be grateful for what I did for you,” he yelled, referring to the deal made with the DA, as if this was some pro-bono case where he did this simply out of the goodness of his heart. I mean, it was not like he was paid for his legal work or anything…Of course, the condescension didn’t stop there. After he was finished with his tirade, I calmly asked why he was angry. His response was that he wasn’t angry, but that I should “Come here and I’ll cut you a check for your lousy X dollars, and you can go represent yourself. If it’s so much money to you, good luck!” This was all because I asked him if a court stenographer (which he recommended for my case) would be covered by the retainer. “No,” was all the answer I got. Wanting to know a bit more, I just asked “Isn’t that considered a legal fee?” He replied briskly: “No,” again offering no elaboration. Not left with too many options due to his monosyllable answers, I asked “Why not”. He simply said “It’s an out of pocket expense.” So I asked him what the difference was, setting him off, because apparently college graduates shouldn’t ask questions, as they should be grateful for overpaid, grumpy lawyers. I tried to politely explain to him that I was only asking him these questions as I simply wanted to clarify details about the use of finances, to which he replied “If a stenographer is so expensive to you, then get a job or something. If it’s a financial problem, then it’s your problem, not mine!” In what situation is it ever okay to be that condescending to a client, and to make implicit insults directed at their intelligence, education, or financial situation? And one final point. If you are looking for a lawyer that can return your emails (which some find crucial in this day and age), forget it. Klein does not respond to emails. In fact, Klein does not even have an email, and refuses to use one. At least that was what he said in our dealings.

T Wickham Schmidt was referred to us by another Green Bay attorney. We called him 2 months ago. He said he did NOT have a conflict of interest with any parties we want to sue. Said he would represent us for $2,500. I wanted to think about it. On January 19, 2024, I called his office again to say that matter have gotten worse and we could not resolve this case with the other party. I told him that I could send him a detailed e-mail and He agreed to read it. I sent it Sunday, January 22, 2024. He wrote back to me saying he wanted $500 for an opinion on my case and some information to help us resolve it in small claims court. I wrote back saying we would send him $500 after we got some detailed and useful information with some questions answered. To our shock, we got today, January 24, 2024, a 2 sentence message saying HE COULD NOT REPRESENT US. No explanation. No anything. We are very upset that this lawyer, in whom we put our trust treated us in such a shabby manner. We sent him confidential information, and put our trust in confidentiality. I can only hope that he, at least, destroys the sensitive and confidential information and sends me a postal letter that he has not shared the information we provided with anyone else.

First let me explain Tim provis was very kind and accepting me making payments cuz you know I could not afford to give a big large retainment so he allowed me to make payments of $300 a month for a total of $5,000 to appeal a case of corruption and Manitowoc County with that being said although he eventually offered to finish the case pro bono and said he was planning on filing a writ of prohibition in which he never did. He told me I didn't have to finish making any payments I feel it was a disservice because doing the case pro bono or even at a reduced rate is no deal at all if he doesn't return your calls file an emotions this goes beyond just the case I mean the judge was an obstructionist of Justice he lacked him out of e-file wouldn't allow him notifications of hearings that were coming up for me I ended up having a warrant issue for my arrest he said he was going to file a Prohibition because they were denying to him access to the file so that he could represent me and he never did any of that and as I said in the beginning it started out very nice he was very generous but is that truly generous if he doesn't do anything for you and in the meantime you bypass your time lines and your love no recourse and you can't appeal it anymore cuz too much time is left so did he give me a deal or did he take advantage of me by having me pay what I did pay and then what radio silence after turning my calls stopped returning my emails. At the very minimum he should have filed a complaint with the judicial commission that's a judge was not allowing him access to e-file so that he could represent me it was a confidential case that I should not have had access to however the corrupt judge inserted me into that confidential case then denied me access to it so I couldn't have representation so it wasn't me trying to get access to records I didn't need or wasn't required to have it was the judge you inserted me into the confidential case and then refused to allow my lawyer any access to the files so that he would be on notified of any Court hearings when I missed a court hearing because I was that notified nor was he a warrant was issued for my arrest I might add that this case it won't was issue for my arrest I wasn't even a party to the case literally she parked me out the street to find me in contempt and sanctioned me 6 months jail sentence to be stayed unless than a month later he took back that stay and gave me 20 days in jail and I was forced to move out of state so now I don't know what recourse I have I can't file an appeal because the time is lapsed the only thing I'm thinking is maybe I can file a civil to find a civil attorney to represent me in federal court for ineffective assistance of counsel and judicial corruption

Attorney Provis was recently sanctioned by Federal District Judge William Conley for improperly preparing and filing a frivolous civil RICO complaint against a number of defendants. Provis’ complaint was dismissed with prejudice against each defendant. Provis was ordered by Judge Conley to pay all attorneys’ fees and expenses for three defendants. Provis now owes those defendants over forty thousand dollars. Provis misconduct also exposed his client, the plaintiff in the case, to Judge Conley’s order to pay all the same $40+ thousand in fees and costs. Judge Conley also found that Provis filed the RICO case for an improper purpose. Namely, Provis was assisting his client in carrying on a many years old vendetta and harassment of defendants. See Upchurch v O’Brien et al, 19 cv 165, Western District of Wisconsin, Judge Conley Opinion and Order dated August 16, 2021; order 7/26/22 and Judgment entered August 4, 2022. Provis’misconduct May be investigated by the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Roman committed a criminal act in my presence; I rode with her to my first court hearing and she hit a parked car while she was parking then proceeded to say as we were walking away “I’m going to Pretend like I didn’t do that” I would never have assumed a lawyer could be capable of such disregard and shameless conduct. She said things to me such as “Please just sign the document and stop trying to add or change language” I never received a thank you, any inquires if was satisfied with services rendered etc. At no point in time did I feel like Attorney Roman negotiated in my name or on my behalf, advise or represent me efficiently in court, and before the GAL, communicate effetely, proficiently, or professionally, conduct research into the information provided to her and analyze provided information, nor did she interpret laws, rulings, and regulations for me to understand or advocate for me whatsoever. Attorney Roman certainly had no problem taking my money and, in my opinion, charging me for the same thing over and over i.e., going over the same emails and attached documents she had previously charged me for going over, she also had no problem charging me for all the "work" she had to do after her self-admitted mistake when she mis informed me during our settlement discussions. I had to pay Attorney Roman thousands of dollars, depleting my savings for email correspondences, phone calls and mistakes.

If I could give him zero Stars I would give him zero stars because he is so unprofessional it is unbelievable! Like other reviewers he is very unprofessional in his demeanor he is very unprofessional in his attire and he is very unprofessional in his appearance and he is very unprofessional and rude to the people that he is representing. All this guy wants to do is take plea deals that's it! He does not want to hear your side of the case I highly doubt that he even reads your file. And he definitely does not want any of your input! This man is a charlatan and should not be allowed to practice law! He represented me during a disorderly conduct case as a public defender and I had to fire him because of his inept incompetence! While he had evidence in his hand he refused to show me the evidence before my court date until the day of the court date less than 1 hour from my court date! I am filing a formal complaint against him through the public defender's office as of today because he should not be allowed to practice law because he just simply does not care about anybody or even himself and you will see that when you meet him for your initial meeting with him you will see a sloppy unprofessional man. Do not use this man unless you want to make a plea deal and waste your money. Zero Stars given he is useless!

Was my attorney for a case in which I was never questioned about, that also involved a co-defendant. Was in possession of discovery content and witness list.. intricate case details and an apparent plea I was never presented with. Not that I would have taken it anyway. Scheduled my case for trial during Covid, only for me to meet him prior to court and the guy didn’t even have my file with him at 8:15 AM. Very rude… does not use words to paint pictures, instead uses them to make people adhere. African American Defendants he feels are of ‘lesser quality.’ Told me in the entrance to Judge Wagners Court: “You Sit.” A innocent persons worst nightmare if deemed indigent, and faced with the horrible reality of having to proceed to trial with his representation. Unkempt, makes excuses, never on time, and always unprepared. As people… I don’t care what side of the table we’re on! If I can’t say hey… that person right there in this courtroom values people! Then what are we doing??? Every relationship in the courtroom is about people valuing people… And he doesn’t value people!! Not even himself.

This was my attorney but at times acted more in the behalf of my ex than me. This cost me real estate based on time put in to maintain property as marital property. He did not show strength in dealing with an opponent who was skilled at evasion, but rather asked me to trust my ex and his attorney.. the final outcome was a case that took an additional 4 years to settle. No time limit on selling property, no interest on final payment to me as my debts accrued..no incentive for ex to finish paying his obligation to me.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
