I hired Mr. Kenyon in both a civil and criminal defense case regarding Marijuana and DUI. I've found that Charles did not keep proper notes regarding my case, as I've had to constantly remind him of what took place on the day of my arrest. During a suppression hearing regarding evidence, he admitted evidence we were trying to suppress. He was regularly late for court, and was not at his office at times we scheduled meetings. In the end, I had to fire Mr. Kenyon and appoint a public defender. Definitely not worth the $6k flat fee retainer.

I was arrested at 5 a.m on a Saturday morning and I asked a family member to find an attorney for me. She contacted Mr. Kenyon. He was extremely responsive and met with me over the weekend to set my expectations, gather facts, and begin formulating a strategy. He met with me again early Monday morning, briefed me on the steps he had taken, and once again did a fine job of ensuring I knew what would be happening over the next few days. As it turns out, my charges were dropped a few hours later, but it was clear that Mr. Kenyon was an excellent choice and had a firm grasp of dealing with the legal process, and developing a strategy for my defense. I would highly recommend him.

I have met dear attorney Cathy lafleur August 2021. She is sharp savvy and professional in court/office but humble gracious and personable in person. As one of her former clients said she will always have your back to the end. She never gave your unrealistic promises but always dedicated to do the best to protect your rights and meet your needs. Divorce might be one of the most stressful things on the earth , through which if you have a prestigious attorney who has a heart and truly cares , who is almost always there to answer your concerns and by your side to support you emotionally and sometimes goes miles just to help you, it alleviates the pain. It is a blessing. To me , She is not just an attorney, she is a mentor/role model/icon /influence /humanitarian to the community, who teaches me and models me into a better myself. She guides me with her professional knowledges and life wisdoms. Additionally, Her firm provides all kind of resources to you and keep you go around smoothly during the divorce and afterwards. All the professionals she recommends are super kind knowledgeable and helpful too. Her staffs are always kind , especially her beautiful strong “wings” Sean (kind and patient)and Chelsea( proactive efficient and knowledgeable)who are always there for you . I feel grateful for attorney Cathy lafleur and her staffs Highly recommended!! 🙏 Ying

You are not treated like just 'one more' client or a number. When you are represented by Cathy you can be assured your needs and concerns will be addressed properly. If it is a fighter you need, Cathy is your warrior! The staff at La Fleur is stellar as well. Personable, accommodating, available when you need them, and very professional.

In my opinion, Attorney David S. DeHorse, is a real piece of work. If you hear any of these phrases, run. This is a slam dunk case, I’ll get you fees and double damages, I thought I sent that, I have very little time in this, or any other statement that leads you on, run. Actually, my Wife won our case and not Attorney David S. DeHorse. He did do the paperwork, but when it came to nut-cutting time, we did the heavy lifting. My Wife found a voice mail on our phone from the Defendant that blew this case wide open. In addition, I gave written instructions on the number to settle on. Well, after the final billing we’re $842.61 dollars short. I wonder where the money went?

I've known Attorney Connolly for many years. When my husband asked for a divorce, she was the attorney I turned to. She not only made sure she was the proper attorney for the job, but she also encouraged me to, without pressure, make sure I felt the same way before hiring her. During the proceedings, Gwen paid very close attention to detail. She also made sure I was understanding everything as well. During such an emotional time, she always helped provide an atmosphere where I felt safe, well represented, and better able to make sound decisions. I enjoyed working with her. She is very knowledgeable, offered great advice and made me feel as though she was always in my corner. Gwen also has many good ties to this community -- I could tell everyone we worked with during the divorce respected her as well.

I had a wrongful termination suit for which I hired Victor. My first question to him was whether it was worth going forward. His judgment was that it was--as it turned out he was wrong in that. But I had to pay for his miscalculation not him. I know there are no crystal balls that can see the future, but what was worse than his poor judgement is that he claimed an exorbitant number of hours which he did not discuss with me and I did not authorize. So not only did he lose my case, but he was consistently slow to respond in a fast moving situation, and I ended up getting over $6000 bill for his unauthorized work. I would only recommend him as a lawyer for somebody you dislike.

I had a terrible experience through my divorce largely in part due to this attorney. Poor communication, inability to state the facts and/or give advice... more concerned about himself than his clients. Mr Bock lacks communication skills, empathy, and is unorganized. Has his clients do most of the work though doesn't hesitate to charge. Once my divorce was settled I was promised a certain amount of money from equity from my house and was shorted a significant amount... he back dated things that he allegedly didn't charge me for in the past. I would not recommend this attorney to anyone going through a divorce. My divorce ended in July... I waited to write this review until now to be sure my frustrations were in fact largely related to his counsel and they certainly are.

Beyond incompetent. If you are looking for legal counsel that can spell, write, address an envelope, or complete basic demographic information correctly, you are better off hiring a third grader. If you choose to work with MENN Law, then anticipate spending your time doing their job, including: reviewing and proofreading any and all correspondence, especially anything that serves as a permanent legal record; requesting corrections; fighting for a straight answer on anything as basic as where to click to fill out a common, government form; arguing to NOT pay for error-ridden or corrective work, and; doing the work yourself.

I have been a client of Attorney Laatsch for a number of years and have sought his legal advice in a number of situations, including traffic representation, real estate transactions, and drafting of a will. In each matter, Attorney Laatsch took time to walk me through all of my options so that I had the information needed to make the best decisions possible. Attorney Laatsch was very timely in responding to my questions and was well-prepared for every meeting we had. I found him to be very knowledgeable and experienced in each area of the law we needed to discuss. He always explained what was going on and provided information that was easy to follow, even though some of the subject matter was complex. Attorney Laatsch’s knowledge and expertise made me feel confident in knowing that my interests were well-represented. Daryl Laatsch recommended my husband and I file Bankruptcy in SE District of Wisconsin. He lacked the expertise needed to evaluate our situation adequately, and filed the Petition without meeting with us, letting us review the Petition and without obtaining our signatures on it. We have lost more than $500,000.00 in cash and assets as a result of his poor legal advice. He failed to inform us once filed, it could not be withdrawn and as a result many of our assets were taken by the Trustee. We asked Laatsch to withdraw as counsel, so we could retain competent counsel, but due to his games and delays, we were left to fend on our own for several months until the Court heard the Motion to Withdraw. He incorrectly listed assets, values, debts, amounts, etc. He completed the Petition "In front of the tv while watching the Sunday football game and having a few beers" (Sept. 16, 2012) according to what he said to us. We lost our homestead and are now virtually on the streets. We are both retired, and one of us is disabled with serious health issues. He has refused to return our personal financial documents, tax returns and other sensitive documents, although he was allowed to withdraw as counsel. This man is poorly organized in his office, had no secretary, and all the mail sent to him by the Bankruptcy Court Clerk was returned as "undeliverable" although he provided the court with his address. He filed false Affidavits, including an Affidavit of Mailing. The postmark on the envelope was five days after he stated under oath he had placed the envelope in the U.S. mail. He was a Municipal Judge who had a Judicial Complaint filed against him by the Wisconsin Judicial Commission for misconduct while serving as a judge. Although the Supreme Court reprimanded him (the voters did not return him to the bench after 2007) and the Rules of Ethics prohibit him from advertising himself as a judge, former judge or using that position for financial gain, he continued to show himself on the bench in his ads until recently. He was in dirty shorts, wearing a stained shirt, and sandals when we first met him at his shared office space on Main Street in West Bend. We were referred to him by another law firm who specializes in fraud cases because they were too busy to meet with us before an upcoming court case where we alleged mortgage fraud. We did, indeed, incur extraordinarily high legal fees straightening out the schedules and ultimately paying through the nose under Bankruptcy laws. Our legal fees exceeded $40,000 not including all the federal taxes we have paid and still owe to cover the IRA distributions which we needed to take to cover the assets seized by the Trustee.

What a Consumer Protection Lawyer Can Do for You

A consumer protection lawyer specializes in safeguarding individuals from unfair, deceptive, or fraudulent business practices. These lawyers advocate for the rights of consumers in disputes with businesses, helping clients recover damages related to fraud, defective products, false advertising, or violation of consumer protection laws. They work to enforce laws that prevent businesses from taking advantage of consumers and ensure that businesses adhere to fair practices.

Whether you’ve been the victim of a scam, sold a faulty product, or misled by false advertising, a consumer protection lawyer can help you navigate legal options and pursue justice.

When Should I Hire a Consumer Protection Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a consumer protection lawyer when you’ve encountered unfair or illegal business practices and need legal assistance to resolve the situation. Common scenarios include:

  • Fraud or deceptive business practices: If a company misled you into purchasing a product or service under false pretenses, a lawyer can help you seek compensation.
  • Defective products: If you purchased a product that was unsafe or defective and caused harm, a lawyer can help you file a product liability claim.
  • False advertising or unfair pricing: A lawyer can assist if you were misled by deceptive advertising or charged for services or products in a way that violates consumer laws.
  • Debt collection harassment: If you're being harassed by debt collectors or are facing illegal debt collection practices, a consumer protection lawyer can enforce your rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).
  • Credit report issues: If errors on your credit report are affecting your financial standing, a lawyer can help you resolve disputes with credit reporting agencies or creditors under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
  • Predatory lending practices: If you've been subjected to unfair loan terms or practices by payday lenders or mortgage companies, a lawyer can help you challenge the loan and seek a resolution.
  • Data breaches or identity theft: If your personal information was compromised due to a company’s failure to protect your data, a lawyer can help you recover damages related to the breach.

What Does a Consumer Protection Lawyer Do?

A consumer protection lawyer provides a wide range of services to help protect consumers' rights and seek compensation for harms caused by businesses. Their role may include:

  • Filing lawsuits: Representing clients in lawsuits against businesses that have violated consumer protection laws, whether through fraud, deceptive practices, or negligence.
  • Negotiating settlements: Working with businesses or their insurers to negotiate fair compensation for damages caused by unfair practices or defective products.
  • Pursuing class action lawsuits: When a company harms multiple consumers, a lawyer can represent a group of plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit, seeking collective damages.
  • Advising on consumer rights: Helping clients understand their rights under various consumer protection laws and advising on the best course of action.
  • Handling product liability claims: Representing clients who have been injured by defective products and holding manufacturers or retailers accountable for the harm caused.
  • Defending against debt collection harassment: Enforcing the rights of consumers under the FDCPA and other laws that protect individuals from abusive or unlawful debt collection tactics.
  • Resolving credit report disputes: Helping clients correct errors on their credit reports that may be causing financial harm or affecting their creditworthiness.

How Are Consumer Protection Lawyers Paid?

Consumer protection lawyers typically use different fee structures depending on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work required. Common payment methods include:

  • Contingency fee: For many consumer protection cases, such as class actions or product liability claims, lawyers may work on a contingency fee basis. This means they only get paid if they win or settle the case, taking a percentage (typically between 25% and 40%) of the awarded amount.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex cases or ongoing legal disputes, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates can range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific services, such as reviewing a contract or filing a small claim, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the necessary legal work.
  • Retainer fee: For clients needing ongoing legal assistance, some lawyers may charge a retainer fee, which is an upfront payment that is billed against as the lawyer works on the case.

It’s important to discuss fees upfront with your lawyer to understand how you’ll be charged and to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Consumer Protection Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a consumer protection lawyer depends on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal service required. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases handled on a contingency basis, the lawyer typically takes between 25% and 40% of any settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Hourly rates for consumer protection lawyers generally range from $150 to $500, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or cases involving complex legal issues.
  • Flat fees: For specific services like contract reviews or handling a small claims case, flat fees may range from $500 to $2,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Class actions: In class action cases, fees are often paid out of the settlement or damages awarded, and individual plaintiffs usually do not have to pay upfront.

Make sure to ask for a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to avoid surprises and to understand how much you can expect to pay.

Top Questions to Ask a Consumer Protection Lawyer

Before hiring a consumer protection lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they have the experience and skills to handle your case effectively. Key questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with consumer protection law?
Ensure the lawyer has specific experience handling cases like yours, whether it involves product liability, fraud, or debt collection issues.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or a contingency fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case and what outcome you can reasonably expect.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Make sure the lawyer has experience dealing with similar legal issues, whether it’s credit report disputes, data breaches, or defective products.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While it can be difficult to predict exact timelines, the lawyer should give you a general idea of how long your case may take to resolve.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will be working on your claim.

How to Check the Credibility of a Consumer Protection Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable consumer protection lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Check for experience in consumer protection: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to confirm they specialize in consumer protection law and have handled cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their ability to handle consumer protection cases.
  • Look for industry affiliations: Membership in organizations like the National Association of Consumer Advocates (NACA) can indicate that the lawyer is committed to protecting consumer rights.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a consumer protection lawyer, come prepared with all relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Details of the product or service in question: Bring any purchase receipts, warranties, or contracts related to the product or service involved in your claim.
  • Documentation of your complaint: Provide evidence of your complaint, such as email exchanges with the company, photos of a defective product, or a timeline of events related to the dispute.
  • Communication with the business or debt collector: If you’ve communicated with the business or debt collector, bring copies of letters, emails, or phone logs.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes for your case.
  • Information on damages: Be prepared to discuss any financial losses or harm you’ve suffered as a result of the unfair business practices, including medical bills, lost wages, or emotional distress.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer understand your situation more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed with your case.
