I paid $3,000.00 for an OVI case. He told me that Judge McKenney required as a condition of my bond I would have to wear a SCRAM unit on my ankle, otherwise, I would spend the entirety of my case in jail until resolved. That was the 2nd week of November 2021. Since State Trooper Sweazy (Sleazy) lied in his report, proved by the video and audio recordings, he was going to "argue, request, demand, plea, fight for, etc." for a "motion to dismiss," essentially drop the charge. I wore a SCRAM alcohol monitor on my ankle. I had to buy new hair products, lotion, and toothpaste, and avoid EVERYTHING that contained alcohol. I developed a severe rash, skin rotted away, and was bleeding from the SCRAM ankle bracelet (They should be illegal !!). Then, I was switched to a unit I had to carry and blow into every couple of hours. My February court date (1st week of February) he canceled because Walter said he had COVID, but when I talked to him, he was on vacation! He said he couldn't get another court date until March 15th, 6 weeks later. On that day, when he is to interrogate the State Trooper in the court in front of Judge McKenney and present the evidence of the officer lying (he said the cop didn't lie, he "embellished"), he told me the judge "doesn't like to grant dismissals." Grant? This isn't a "grant." Also, he tells me this after being subjected to the SCRAM unit for 4 1/2 months, which is punishment without judgment, and having to go back to work at my seasonal office job, I conceded (regrettably) to accepting the charge of an OVI first offense. Walter Benson manipulated me, lied to me, and put me through torture to wear me down because he got paid $3,000.00 upfront and didn't and wouldn't do anything for me nor in the case of justice. He also threatened a liability case against me when I wrote a negative review on Google. I ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HIM. I believe most of his reviews are fake since most of the people have only given 5 or fewer reviews and all write the "same" sentences. Anybody can create emails/identities and write reviews. Do your research if you don't believe me. Look at the Barberton court docket, read the proceedings, and see the outcomes of his cases. DON'T waste your money, time, and peace of mind on this attorney.

I had a need for both legal and civil representation. The Wides Legal Group knew the procedures and the local court system. They used this knowledge to expedite both of my cases and reach unexpectedly very good outcomes. 4 out of 5 stars. The only reason for the missing star is that their response time was often long—sometimes days.

If you're love one finds themselves facing serious charges in jail or otherwise and is assigned Donald Hicks, please ask the judge to have him removed off his or her case. This man repeatedly lies and could care less about your loved ones. He will not answer calls or requests for visits. If you innocent he will always push for you to take a deal regardless. My experience with this man was very less than favorable. Then when all the money is exhausted from the case, he will simply just quit. Do Not Waste Your Time!!! If you get Donald Hicks, You or your loved ones are going to prison for a long time. Period!

He did a very poor job of responding to emails and voicemails, and when I was able to reach him he was unable to answer very direct questions about why he had sent multiple letters. It has been well over a year and still no explanation from Bradley or his client about why I was sent threatening letters.

FRAUD ALERT!!!!!!! I was initially very pleased with my case, so much so that I referred many others to this firm. I began to receive emails with personal information regarding another clients case. When my bill came charges pertaining to the other client were on my bill. I had to call the office weekly from 9/18 to 12/18 to have the charges of approximately $250 that had nothing to do with my case and have the money that was due me returned to me.I spoke with several people from the office who made several false promises to handle it for me every week. Not one person in the office was the least bit professional or knowledgeable on billing or on how to handle removing the other clients charges. I stopped by the office to check the status of my bill being corrected and was told that stopping by was rude and unnecessary. After finally being feed up I sent a long heart felt email pleading with the firm to remove the other clients charges and return to me the remainder of my retainer because my case was closed. I received a call from Tracy stating the charges were removed and my check was ready. On my lunch I went to get the check and to my surprise they finally removed the $250 in charges that weren't mine but added over $600 in charges they claim to have missed over 8 months ago. I'm the type of person who never likes to complain, but if I can help another single parent of being robbed of her hard earned cash I feel like I have done my job.

But above all, she conducts herself ethically and with the utmost integrity. She truly cares about you, and doing what is best for your child. Was very unhappy with her performance as a lawyer. She DID work with me financially. But other then that lost a case that should have been won.. Not enough fight against untrue statements in court or things that should have been brought up were not. Amongst many other things she said we would talk before court . I was scared to death . She did not talk to me. People started coming in in the room we were in before going into court room they were sitting around laughing and talking while I was in tears because we did not able to talk in private. . I never dealt or heard of a lawyer who doesn’t calls their clients. I feel he works against his clients vs for his clients. He needs to be investigated and grievances should start if others are facing the same issues especially for any type of criminal case. Judges shouldn’t use him again such as court appointed. So maybe he will start calling his clients back if not I am going to let everyone I know who has him come and do a review and if not represented in a fair matter report that as well. Especially waiting for months for a call back or even emails.

Paul is not the kind of attorney he claims to be. He works for the other side at your expense. He is very judgemental. If he don't like you then you should worry. Because all he is doing is taking your money and laughing all the way to the bank. He does not defend you even if you have proof of being innocent. He is not good at communication but what he is good at is giving you dirty looks and belittling u in court. He is very good at taking your money and doing nothing to deserve it. I'd your trying to get your child back and out of children services. You would be better off doing it alone. I had him file motion for custody and he has delayed it every time we have gone to court. My previous brokerage firm ripped me off. They were churning, laundering stock certificates, putting me in junk stocks, unauthorized transfers, etc. I needed a securities lawyer to investigate and possibly prosecute the broker who did this. I came to Mr. Petkovic looking for an ally in my search for justice. Instead, I got another 'shill' who refused to take my case until I first provided him with the details of my ENTIRE life/financial/job history. Mr. Petkovic gave me a questionnaire asking for my SS#, D.O.B., prior employment history. I did not provide this information. I only answered the questions that were relevant to my particular case. Mr. Petkovic said he couldn't work with me if I didn't give him my entire life history BEFORE our first interview/consultation. I have more than one brokerage account. Plus, my employment history has NOTHING to do with the fraud that was affected against ME. Why does Mr. Petkovic insist on obtaining so much personal, sensitive information with a client BEFORE he has even told you if he will accept your case? When I asked him this question he told me he couldn't 'help' me. As far as I'm concerned Mr. Petkovic might as well be working with the broker who ripped me off. That is how much I trust him.

My experience with this law firm was a profound disappointment. I was initially quoted $1,000 for an NDA and MSA, only to receive a final bill of $3,500—a 250% surprise increase without any prior discussion. Communication was non-existent throughout the 2.5 month process, which only resulted in two generic documents that ignored all my specific requests. The lack of professionalism was striking; the final documents were so basic, they were indistinguishable from online templates. Given the unreasonable delays, inflated costs, and disregard for client needs, I advise seeking legal services elsewhere. This firm does not respect its clients' time, money, or business.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
