This guy will whittle down your retainer with daily sessions with the other attorneys in their firm. This guy didn’t listen to me, when in court he asked for things we never discussed. Then after court he drove back to Albuquerque from Santa Fe during a snow storm. Consequently I was billed for a 4 hour drive back.

April 20,2017, I retained Carpenter-Genus Law Group, ##56272, for $500 to write a one-page letter to finalize a situation. I signed a seven page contract. Mr Anthony Spratley was assigned to my task. By contract, I was restricted to communicate only by a certain website. Twice I found myself in others's very private and business informations. I stopped. So I was no longer informed of the progress of my task. #014093 ended our association.

These guys should be more well known and WAY better funded than they are. They deserve to be well taught, trained, and loved. These guys helped me quite well, though I never followed through. They're very helpful as long as you keep on it, and they have a LOT of cases on their hands. Be patient.

I am terminally disabled with the family. I don't run the streets I don't drink I don't even take pain medication for my condition. I am currently majoring in sociology, studying a minor in criminology at CNM. I am in my fourth semester with a 3.8 GPA and am a Phi Theta Kappa Honour Society member. My academic performance clearly indicates that my ability to observe social deviants and criminal deviance are quite astute. Here's the deal: Our former attorney at legal tried to get us to destroy evidence during a mutual lease termination because the former landlord was taking our rent and not repairing the house. Then when we try to abate the rent with legal means, he evicted us. When he did, I acquired representation from legal aid. During the negotiation process for settlement, our former landlord refused to settle. When we refused and stated that the environment our attorney was creating was hostile and that they were working on behalf of the defendant in City, they removed us from being represented by them and then banned us from ever being represented again. The case was against Eric Kilmer and we found out that the deed to the house has been forged. During the mutual lease rescission agreement it was stated that he was to return my deposit but try to trick us and instead he assaulted me. And his girlfriend hit me with her mustang. APD says they did an investigation but when they bought the investigation they transferred all of the officers that were responsible. Eric Kilmer is former bounty Hunter and current business owner here in Albuquerque New Mexico that has ties to law enforcement and the justice system and has had them through a case out with a restraining order where he pulled a gun on us and violated the restraining order three times. The judge that viewed the case ruled in his favor when there was clear evidence that he was a danger not only to my family but to the public. This guy has over 50 cases against him with the city most of them violent and for refusing to comply with law enforcement. I have kept all the records, made multiple reports to the local DA's office, the mayor, and in City Hall meetings. This experience is much more intricate and show us the disparities with the criminal justice system and how the city tries to cover up criminal activity and statistics by not reporting or throwing the cases out altogether against their own.

Mark Ramsey is actually a really good attorney and listens to you, and he understands that he works for you and if you decide to make a decision he will listen to what you want and actually follow through with what you want even if he does not agree with it he will give you his advice but when it comes down to it he understands that it is your decision which I believe makes him one of the best attorneys I've ever had to deal with he fought for me in one my case

Mark Ramsey is not an aggressive public defender. As a matter of fact he puts no effort in helping his clients. He says he will call at a certain time and never does. The only time he communicates with my Son is the day of the courts. It's as if he's on the side of the prosecutors. He should not be representing anyone . It is my understanding he has been oracticing law for over fifteen years and yet he's a lazy incompetent public defende who remains as such.

This attorney was hired to help my son in his case. My son had court two weeks ago and I have not received a call to this day from him to let me know what is going on. I called several times a day and they did not either answer or his receptionist would say he would call me back and I never got a callback. Would not recommend this attorney.

I paid a $2500 retainer to hire John Duran to defend me when I was falsely accused of a felony in Albuquerque in 2014. After I paid the retainer, there was no further communication from him, and my numerous phone calls and messages inquiring about the status of my court case went unanswered. Thankfully, the State of NM dropped the charge after 60 days with a nolle prosequi entered, as there was no valid evidence to prosecute by. I didn’t even get the courtesy of finding out my case was dismissed until a month later when I took some initiative and looked up my case on nmcourts.gov. John never once returned any of my phone calls and messages and he did absolutely nothing for me or my case. What an utter waste of $2500. This lawyer is a disgrace to the profession. Do not give him your money.

Yes this is not Judge John Duran. Review I'd for Duran and McDonald Law Firm. I hired John for a difficult custody case for my child. John was quick through the consultation and had no problem collecting his high retainer. However when court came John was late several times. Did not return any of my calls would show up and wouldn't even have a game plan. I felt that John Duran was useless never fought for my child or my parental rights. After 2 court appearance's I contacted John and McDonald's office on several occasions never returned my voicemails, and my emails. Please I urge you to not hire this lawyer.

To kind for the court room. Does not fight for you agrees to everything the other party states. Oh and let me add does not return phone calls and emails. His assistant is a rude senior citizen. Unprofessional when you pay someone thousands of dollars. They work for you not the other way around. I strongly caution you to hire another lawyer.

Ms.Dennica wouldn't listen to my requests. She didn't give any respect to my moms knowledge of law. If she knew what she was doing she would win this case with 6 stars. Any lawyer has a duty and takes an oath for their client no matter of the state pays. Who pays the state? That's right the people you serve.

This firm treated my friend terribly. They switched lawyers on her several times and also didn't seem to communicate with each other, resulting in her paying the same consultation fee several times in a row. Then they refused to refund her retainer and threatened to sue her when she left a bad review of her own exposing all the ways they mishandled her case. If you want to be treated with basic human decency, find another law firm.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
