Over the years, Martin Blank has handled several legal matters for me and my family, including civil litigation, wills and estates and real estate. Hard working, honest, fair minded and very reasonable fees. We have been so satisfied with his professionalism, work ethic and work product that we have referred him to many friends and family members. The referral topics have included an even broader range of representation, including DUI, drivers license restoration, divorce and criminal, and the people referred have always thanked us for the great work provided. Regardless of the job, the person you want working for you is someone you feel confident about referring to those closest to you, and we couldn't have any more confidence than we have with Martin Blank.

Mr Blank has been absolutely outstanding in handling a difficult and complex divorce for my mother, bringing it to a favorable resolution in short order. He is unusual in keeping a client fully informed of all circumstances, and gives/shares immediate copies of all pleadings in a case. His fees are precise, and he attempts to keep "billable hours" to a minimum. He is knowledgable and intuitive, and is also good with negotiation. Mr. Blank handled my own difficult divorce many years ago, and was equally effective in resolving it. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Lana and Mikie truly helped me through a horrible time, extremely detailed and proficient, personable, caring but vicious in the court room when needed, never felt like just a name on a piece of paper, made my ex wife’s attorney Richard look completely unprepared and incompetent, definitely outclassed, I will recommend Lana to anyone that is going through a divorce with children as I was, Lana and Mikie are definitely a force to reckon with, Lana is the epitome of a specialist and I’m glad I didn’t risk mine and my children’s future on a Richard! Best of the best, Love them

I was terminated from an employer for making a simple ADA request and Kelly McClintock along with her team helped me through the ordeal and were able to get the company to provide a severance package. On top of that, they went above and beyond when the employer disputed my unemployment benefits by saying I had quit. Their knowledge in employment law and unemployment benefits are second to none. Throughout the process I felt heard, understood and supported and could not have asked for better representation. You will not find better attorneys to represent you.

While Tom may lack some "flair" in the courtroom, his steady and thorough demeanor more than make up for it. He remains engaging and invested in the multi-year high conflict divorce in which we are still embroiled. He also represented me in the appeal from the opposing side.

Talked a big game at first about all the things ‘wrong’ in my case. Said I had a great chance of winning my appeal. Took my 20k and proceeded to miss the appeal deadline, then slowly tell me he couldn’t do anything for me while racking up hours. Tried getting me to sign a settlement agreement that was already court ordered. Not on my team and doesn’t look out for your best interest. They market themselves as a father’s rights advocate, but are just like the rest.

Absolutely incredible experience with my chapter 7 bankruptcy. The entire team was nothing but kind and prompt to respond if I needed anything. I think my process went well because I understood that there were going to be a lot of documents I would need to provide and I was always ready to get them to the lawyers promptly. I can't thank their entire team enough for giving me a fresh start. I would highly recommend them in the future.

I went to them to help with my debt. I wasnt sure if I should even start filing, as I am a single parent with low income. Michelle told me they could work with me. I filed and then was unable to afford the bi weekly payment (job loss) so my case was dismissed. Now I have to pay for a bankruptcy that never happened but my biggest problem is I have asked for receipts of my payments, so I can keep track of the balance and they refuse to provide the info. I have asked them for over a year.

My name is Danyelle. I have to use lyles phone and e mail to exercise my freedom of speech because mine was blocked from warning everyone of my experience at fessler law. I went to fessler because there were missing bank accounts for my dad's estate. The greedy personal representative tried to keep everything she could from the estate. Fessler petitioned the bank and when the evidence came in, fessler changed his mind ABSOLUTELY DID NOT WANT THE jUDGE TO KNOW! He told me for 6 weeks that we would set a hearing after we receive the evidence then changed his mind. He is unprofessional, corrupt, unethical and was useless in my case.

If you need a divorce lawyer look elsewhere. Paul C. Fessler is neglectful, unethical, and the only thing he’ll provide is a lack of representation. All the things I signed for in the retainer with Paul C. Fessler of Fesser Law P.C. (aka Paul Fessler) were never honored. 1. Diligent representation by the firm. 2. Mediation and Discovery. 3. Bill rates. 4. Communications, and 5. Refundable retainer. He performed no mediation or discovery in 9 months, he wouldn’t even have a conversation with me during this time, never spoke other than to hire him. He took advantage of me by draining my retainer. I was charged the higher! of the 2 rates the lawyer rate of $250/hr vs, the paralegal rate of $100/hr. She was doing the work, yet not a single $100/hr. paralegal charge, even the frivolous charges were billed high. Second, in over 9 months I only received 3 invoices which should have been coming monthly, this way I wouldn’t see he was draining my account. I had no communications, no emails regarding correspondence from opposing counsel or the court system. Emails I sent were never followed up, phone calls very slow or not returned at all. A refundable retainer? It’s just bait. Once you pay he just made $1500. He stole my money and won’t reply to my request for it back. Super Lawyer? Rising Star? they expect firms to pay for their press, so I was fooled. I fired him and got another attorney who immediately performed discovery and set mediation. I began receiving communications from opposing counsel and the courts within days, what a difference! My new lawyer also witnessed firsthand how Paul C. Fessler lacks professionalism ethics when he didn’t respond for almost 2 weeks after being called and emailed several times, so it’s not just me. I believe I would have lost everything staying Paul C. Fessler. Since mediation wasn’t performed, I was unknowingly being placed into a position where I was just one day away from heading to court to have the judge divide everything in half. The courts don’t have time to mediate cases, this is why mediation so important to work things out before that Settlement date or final judgement day, and discovery is part of that. So, looks like he took my money to let the judge do the work. Paul is the type that gives lawyers a bad name. In hindsight, I should've found a lawyer with hundreds of reviews, not like Paul C. Fessler’s 5 or 6 reviews.

I spoke to Ms. Martell the other day. I had previously reached out to her a day or so before. She return my call personally and was very kind. Ms. Martell provided my fiancée and I with very valuable and easy to understand legal advice with regard to LGBTQ parenting laws. We will definitely be using her for any of our estate planning and family needs. Please note: I was a bit thrown off by the rating, But as I always, do, I read the reviews carefully. The low ratings are not a reflection of this business. Sometime ago, a scammer used the name of this business. This is similar to how a catfish steals someone’s photo off social media to scam others. This law firm is not connected with the credit card scammers in ANY way. The owner of the business is just as much as a victim as anyone else that was affected by the criminals involved.

They're the victims, not you and your drained bank account. I got them on the phone and that was the story. It's their company and their name. The fact that they haven't addressed it speaks volumes. They are absolutely part of the scam. File a police report with your local PD They will contact Ann Arbor PD.

I came into to see this man for a consultation. I told him, I need to retain a lawyer. I have someone out to get me into trouble anyway possible. He agreed to take me on. I paid this man $200 for a retainer. I then called his office and he never returned my calls. I was eventually arrested and called him and he never returned my calls. Useless, I had to hire another lawyer. Afterwards, I made numerous attempts coning into his office to talk to him only to get blown off by people in his office. He was never there. For years I tried and no contact. This man took my money and couldn't even take my call. I wanted a refund and i never got a call back. Why have you not once ever returned my calls? I should contact the bar association. It's been years. I gotnanither attorney now. A good one. He also tells me this guy is uselss.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
