I hired James Mills to represent my case for a DWI refusal to blow. I was in a severe car accident and was unable to comply due to my injuries. However, I did refuse medical help so I was arrested and taken to jail. I spoke with James within a few days of my arrest and he said we had a strong case but he would not guarantee my outcome. He understood the law well and informed me of what my options were. Because my case was in a county outside of where he primarily works I did have to sit in court 6 times due to continuances because he was unable to make the appearance. With that being said, we met before my trial in his office and I felt prepared and confident with him as my attorney. The day of my trial, the arresting trooper made several untrue allegations and James was still able to keep the trial on track. He was Thorough and I was found not guilty by the judge. I am very confident that James is a great attorney and will get the job done. My only recommendation if you hire him is to not expect him to hold your hand. I didn't hear from him much and this being my first time in court, made me nervous because I wasn't sure how the court system worked and what to expect. He did what he was hired to do and he was very kind and very affordable. I would highly recommend him.

Attorney Doug Edward’s has been such a blessing! He’s thorough, honest, understanding, and he truly has your best interest in mind! A lot of attorneys are in it for the money but with Doug he actually cares about the outcome and the long term impacts on one’s life! He will explore every avenue making sure the best route is being taken but most importantly he sees and acknowledges the humanness of his clients! He will meet you where you are and once a common goal is established he will make sure it’s met! Doug is truly a top tier attorney! He goes 10 toes for his clients and as long as you’re open and honest with him he’ll go to bat for you! He will forever be my go to for legal counsel! Lord forbid I ever need it but I know that if I do I’m In good hands! He’s literally the Allstate of attorneys! 10/10 highly recommended!!

A friend and I were falsely accused, and from the second we met Dustin, the case was smooth-sailing, he exercises incredible professionalism and maturity. The situation was resolved with minimal stress and little effort from my end. Dustin had a sizeable role to play in saving my future and I couldn't recommend him more.

I met with Wiley Westall to update my Will. He was really very nice and took his time going through all of the specific details. A week later I met with him again to finalize. I was very impressed with his work. We went over the entire Will and he took the time to go over and explain each and every paragraph. Something the last attorney who updated, didn’t bother to do. We also went over the Healthcare Power of Attorney and discussed at length each and every line. Again, never had that from others. I just wish that I had found him a few years ago! I highly recommend Wiley. Great, compassionate, intelligent, fair minded guy.

She really cares about you and your situation and takes the time to make sure that you understand all of your options and are making informed decisions. I just appreciate Abbey and her term a ton and if I ever need any legal assistance in the future, I’ll be working with Abbey again.

The last three years of my life have been the worst I've ever experienced. My mom died of cancer, a month later my wife left me and my brother was murdered all within under a year. I fell in a dark deep depression which I almost didn't make it out of and at the time of my depression my house got foreclosed on. I got a letter in the mail saying I needed a lawyer to try to get back some of the funds for the house. I reached out to Mr. Bailey for guidance. He stepped out of his comfort zone, which is criminal defense to help me get my life back. He kept great communication and helped me understand the process. Even during one of the worst hurricanes we've ever seen here in our mountains he kept communication with me while having no electricity, water or cell service at his residence. Anytime I met with him at his office I felt like family and I felt like the help I was getting was extremely sincere. It's scary out there And it's hard to give your trust but I trusted him like I've known him for 20 years. Mr. Bailey helped me get my life back on track. Which in turn will help me spend more valuable time with my children, One of the most important things you can never get back and for that I am forever grateful!! In closing I want to let everybody know that I highly recommend them and their help in just about anything you're dealing with in life. God bless and God speed🤘 WNC Strong💪

The team generally responded quickly to emails. I incurred late payment penalties (one month for one account, two months for the other) due to not being provided accurate payment projections despite providing all information to the firm in February. Ultimately, the filing felt unnecessarily stressful and rushed. Consultation with other firms to review those filings revealed errors and omissions which will require filing amended returns.

Having never been in any sort of trouble in my life, I found myself suffering severe anxiety and devastation over a DWI. Andy is so compassionate, very professional, and highly effective. What began with high expectations based on referral by another attorney resulted in disappointment in virtually all areas of our relationship ... from communication to professional judgment in the appeal process. Admittedly, our case was extremely complicated but we believe we lost our appeal due in large part to the failures of Mr. Banzhoff to properly identify errors that had occurred. Though based on his other reviews I wonder if perhaps our experience was an exception, I am unfortunately unable to recommend him to others in need of appellate services.

Andy killed it. Met with him regarding a business matter that may have led to what would be criminal conduct if I did not have a consultation with Mr. Banzhoff. I was saved not only the trouble of entering what was a questionable practice, but spared the possibility of many more legal bills in the future, had it been deemed illegal. Whilst I'm sure he would a fine job defending me, putting my file away before and criminal possibility was the best option. As others have said - very forthcoming guy, and will not mince words. Exactly what you want out of someone you can pay for advice. There are 2 people in your life that are not "friends" that should always have your back. Your doctor and your attorney. Mr. Banzhoff is, I strongly believe, someone you can trust to have your back when the rubber meets the road.

This law office is completely unequipped to handle modern employment law cases. The attorney was shockingly uneducated on clear-cut workplace retaliation, ADA violations, HIPAA privacy breaches, and discrimination law. Instead of recognizing textbook legal violations, he was dismissive, condescending, and gaslighting—forcing me to explain basic legal concepts, only to victim shame me for staying in a job where I was financially and medically trapped. Rather than advocating for employee rights, he made me justify my own case, despite having prepared over 500 pages of documentation and proof of clear violations, retaliation, and systemic discrimination—questioning clear ADA noncompliance and disability discrimination. I even had to explicitly explain how multiple diagnoses and conditions are legally protected, and he still failed to recognize obvious retaliation. He clearly does not understand modern workplace environments or employment law beyond the most basic level. On top of that, I was financially and physically displaced due to a Hurricane Helene, another concept that didn’t warrant even the slightest bit of compassion or understanding from him. I came in for a consultation prepared to pay $400 for solid legal advice but ended up wasting my time repeating myself, trying to explain the nature of modern remote work environments, cloud computing, and corporate tech consulting. He should have paid me for educating him on these concepts—even though I doubt he remembered anything that was discussed after I left the room. If you are looking for a lawyer who is compassionate, understands nuance, and is actually familiar with employment law from this century, look elsewhere. You should not have to repeat yourself multiple times, be further gaslit, or feel more exhausted after a legal consultation than you did before it. The lack of competence extends beyond legal matters. If you expect a law office that at least knows how to update their own Google business listing, provide clear office directions, or even put up a sign so clients can find them, you’ll be disappointed there too. If they can’t even manage basic business operations, how can they be trusted with a complex legal case? Do not waste your time.

We were completely satisfied with our representation by Mr. Rice. Not only was he professional and competent in our legal matters, but was able to make the minor involved in the complaint to feel comfortable and satisfied that her decisions were heard and addressed. I would refer anyone to him first if they were looking for an attorney. While court issues are usually not pleasant in nature, we came out of this feeling like our interests as well as the "defendant/father of infant" was also taken into account so that in the end, the infant will benefit from having both parents present in his life. We were never made any promises or delusions of what we were up against and felt he advised us according to the law. Thanks to Mr. Rice.

"A lawyers time and advise are his stock and trade." Unfortunately Ms Turner gives inaccurate advise. Sadly in my case we followed Ms. Turner's inaccurate advise, which ultimately led to excessive attorneys fees and "bad blood" in the family. Mr. Trilling was appointed to me by the court and, in my humble opinion, I'd rather have a box of bricks defend me. He was rude, insulting and overall I would not recommend him.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
