I have hired Lauri several times over the past 15 years to represent me on various criminal cases and DUIs. She has never disappointed me or failed to surprise me with outstanding results at the end of each conclusion or sooner! She will remain in my contacts for as long as she practices law and the first name I mention as a reference to anyone struggling in the court system!

My attorney worked diligently with so much compassion and determination to have my granddaughter removed from an unsafe environment and returned home to me while decisions are being made regarding her living situation in the Juvenile Court system. Aaron Maus worked so hard day in and day out to ensure this child safety. I will be forever grateful for Aaron. I feel he was personally part of this case as his communication was extraordinary and his heart is involved for the best interest of an innocent child!

We are current clients of Mr. Rudolph and we would highly recommend this attorney to anyone in need of a good man to represent them. Mr. Rudolph has been excellent in representing us in our estate and real estate cases. He is very professional, very kind, very realistic, very knowledgeable, very proficient, very down-do-earth, very attentive, and on and on... we can't say enough good things regarding this attorney. We have gone through a very difficult situation, and it has been such a blessing that we found him. He is extremely knowledgeable, and extremely kind; both of which have helped us tremendously as we have struggled through a very traumatic year. He has gone above and beyond what we would have ever expected, and he continues to do so. We are so pleased to have found this extraordinary attorney, who is also a wonderful human being. We highly recommend him.

Tim represented me 11 years ago and made a bad situation better in family court for me, Tim is great at telling you exactly like it is, he’s your lawyer and he knows how to get things done and the best route to take to accomplish your desired outcome. Here I am years later and I once again hired Tim, I trust Tim. He’s a great guy, great lawyer, just make sure you listen to what he tells you, he’s not a magician. He can’t snap his fingers and move mountains YOU HAVE TO DO THAT FOR YOURSELF. The language of law is extremely difficult and the knowledge required to understand law is boundless and takes unanimous amounts of effort along with TIME. That’s where Tim comes in, he’s your navigator and advocate. He’s not your therapist, he’s walking in there with you and both of you have to fight and work to accomplish good results. Imagine someone leading you out of a nightmare, that’s Tim Morris.

Katie was an invaluable asset to help me through my divorce and custody case. I had called around to several offices in the area and the only one that I felt a connection to was Katie. She had a sharp tongue, and I knew she was the one who would not back down during this fight. She empathized and made me feel heard. She took the time to listen to my story and even look at photos of my son. I recall telling her she probably didn't care but she reached for my phone and took those few moments to see really see us. Morning noon or night I could reach out and she would respond in a timely fashion. There were a few occasions that she could feel my growing anxiety in our messages and the next thing I know my phone is ringing. She was on the other end ready to assure me and answer any questions. I never had to worry whether or not she was still fighting for us behind the scenes. She explained all the options and set expectations in great detail and in a language I could understand. It was the first time in a long time that I felt like I had some sort of control over our future. She was fantastic every step of the way.

Helped my son hire this attorney for a custody case. Just a warning, he charges his $300 an hour fee for every task at hand and there is an additional $65 an hour fee for the paralegal. One email sent (that normal people can write in less than 5 minutes) boom $65 charge. A fax that takes 2 minutes - boom another $65. A 10 minute phone call to receive an update about your case BOOM $300!!!! He is not $300 an hour, he is $300 per task. Additionally, his paralegal is $65 per task. Just beware

Doug did an excellent and thorough job with everything from the initial consultation to turning myself in for an outstanding warrant to the actual hearings. I received a lot of practical and useful advice during the process. For example, being sure to arrive at the police station extremely early in the morning to make sure that any bond hearing would likely make it to the morning docket and avoid having to spend any potential time in custody. This worked out wonderfully on my behalf, as the officer was able to issue a recite which created a new hearing date and only took a few hours, including travel to make it such a worthwhile trip. He obviously was very seasoned and new everyone in the courthouse which I thought was very advantageous. And the best part of all is that he had done his homework and negotiating and ultimately got my case dismissed. This allows me to regain my driving privileges without any restriction. I simply could not be happier with the services and expertise that Doug & his staff brought to the table.

Hired for custody case. The judge literally had to pause the hearing because Mr. Kennedy was incorrect about the type of custody I currently had. Once the court case resumed, we again had to pause so I could personally work out a deal with opposing counsel for healthcare for our son. This is something I asks Mr. Kennedy for and was told “that will never happen.” Well it did that day through speaking across Mr. Kennedy and communicating with opposing counsel to obtain the desired outcome. As the case progressed, there was an area that Mr. Kennedy had stated we would object to and have dismissed immediately. The opposing counsel brought it up and continued talking as I sat there wanting to kick Mr. Kennedy under the table. FINALLY he objected. The judge simply said, “if you wanted to object, you should have stated it when she began and over ruled him.” It was horrible. After all of this I received the final bill. I was shocked to see it included all the times Mr. Kennedy called to ask the same questioned that were answered in his office. He just couldn’t remember. He also gave us paperwork to fill out for court and my husband realized it was another client’s paperwork and it was already filled out. At the end of the court case Mr. Kennedy stated he thought the case went well. I replied what about the part that you were supposed to object to? He brushed it off and said, “Well we will just go back to court to try to overturn the verdict.” Not what you want to hear after having to work out your own deals with opposing counsel and have your case stopped twice by the judge because your lawyer doesn’t have his crap together. I found him to be arrogant, argumentative and lacks the skills to litegait as a lawyer. should retire or be disbarred.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
