He was never up to date on our immigration cases. My father spoke limited English and I was just a kid at the time we used his services. Constant run arounds and ridiculous billing for just coming in to sign papers. He provided no advice and it was up to me to do my own research on some laws when I turned 18. I have spoken to other immigrants and they have not had such a terrible experience. We probably spent over $20,000 on our case - other people with very similar cases spent $5,000 max. I'm saddened my father was taken advantage of to such an extent. I wish I knew back then. Please do not hire him.

Lawrence represented me in a case I already felt he over charged me for. I recently had another attorney look over my case and we are reopening my case because the investigation that was originally done was horrible. The prosecutor put that they interviewed a witness and the witness was deceased on the dates they said they interviewed her in their reports. They also added that I had 14 different bank accounts which could’ve easily been discredited. I would’ve came out better with a public defender. I paid a lot of money to this man in cash and upfront never again will I ever trust another attorney especially this one!!

I could go on and on about Lawrence. He is an amazing person and truly cares about each and every client. He always came to see me while I was in jail. Never had questions, because he informed me in detail of everything. Prepped me and always have had good outcomes with him. I would never got to anyone else for legal matters, nor let my friends or family go anywhere else. He is definitely top in my book!

This lawyer seemed to do a good job getting serious criminal charges reduced, seemed to know how to negotiate, but don't ask too many questions. It irritates him to explain procedures or what's going on & tells you so. I've never had a lawyer before that made it clear you're bothering him when you call to ask what's going on.

Ray knows the system and makes it known that he knows people within the court system. I will say that from personal experience, no matter what kind of bind you are in financially (which I think it's safe to say that when you need an attorney odds are it is taking a hit on your finances) , that Mr Faller makes zero to very little efforts in working with you. He wants money and does not care what your verdict is. I hope he takes pride in winning court cases, but Ray does not truly fight for his clients. If you can find a lower cost attorney, I would be willing to bet that the attorney is capable of doing as much as Mr. Faller can. I know this to be true because when fighting a OVI charge (0.096) my charges were not dropped and Ray did very minimal work because his focus was solely on him getting paid. It's sad when your young and in a financial bind and trust a guy like this with such a positive reputation and all of the "head guys" in your AA class say you got screwed. Practically 80% of the people who attended the weekend class had their charge dropped to mistermeanor with BAC over 1.0 Just do some research before hiring this guy. His first words are always concerning how much and fast he can get paid. I would not recommend this cash cow. They're are many other options that won't cost as much and are more friendly.

I am writing this review so that others will not make the same mistake I did. This man is one of the most condescending, faceitious and awkward individual I and my family have ever met. He was no where near compassionate or understanding. He gave off a weird vibe and if you're looking for a decent price, look elsewhere. Chuck treated myself and my family like we were un-intelligent and lacked common sense. Just because someone has a brush with the law doesn't mean they should be treated with such disrespect. I will say that he knows his stuff on DUI law and the case turned out in our favor as best it could but I would choose differently if I could go back. I hope others take this advice to heart and make a better choice in their representation than I did.

I had a DUI charge and we were able to get it reduced to a Physical Control. This was my first offense. Chuck was able to explain everything that seemed confusing and worked with me on payment however I feel he is a bit pricey as I still paid for a lot of things with this situation on top of his price. Regardless of how much I have paid out, it was my fault it happened and he was able to assist in the time frames allotted.

If you are unfortunately in need of an attorney for a serious charge like OVI or DUI . Chuck is just the fellow you need. He is very kind, but don't mistake kindness for weakness. He is a powerful force working for you. He will always take you call and listen and advise. When we were in court you could see that he is highly respected . He will fight for you to get the best outcome possible. You know from the start what may happen and how he can help you. There is not enough words to say how safe and how well cared for we were in his very capable hands. Thank you Chuck we are very very grateful for all you did for our son. He can move forward with his life without worry or problems you fought to the end for him.. THANKS again..

I have to definitely agree with the last Guys review. Jeff is the most rudest unprofessional lawyer I've ever talked to. He downplays your intelligence and basically tells you to fall on the sword and take what the Court gives you it's pretty bad when you fire a free attorney. He's a public defender for a reason apparently because nobody in their right mind would pay to have this clown represent them. If I could give him a negative 10 I would. Run and run fast if the Court's appoint this guy to your case.

Decent guys on a personal level, but this Review is about the Professional Legal Services that I paid for. Pros: Aggressive in the first two days. Cons: Lacks communication, Lacks follow through, Lacks Aggressive Representation, Lacks Thorough Legal Counsel, Uses Deceptive Tactics Against Their Own Clients (as I was "ambushed" in their office with video that actually helped my case)... I was not impressed with the representation that I received from this firm. Although the attorney stated to me at the end, "You should have never have been charged", he did little to nothing in showing that in the Courtroom, to the Prosecutor, or even to the Judge. The attorney spent more time trying to convince me to plead "Guilty" without being able to show me what law I broke. As one attorney expressed to me that the Judge pointed out "Show me the Crime", and no one was able to. In one breath the attorney stated "The Judge asked what Defense Strategy I planned on using, and when I told her, she shook her head No"... Two weeks later, I inquired about the Defense Strategy, and the attorney stated "The Judge has not rendered a decision on that."... There were several instances like this, but it is always excused away by "That must have been an misunderstanding or miscommunication." In the Motion To Suppress Hearing, the attorney was told by the Judge, "The statute you used to justify the Request To Suppress actually supports your Motion to be Denied.". The attorney had no idea what he was doing. I sent repeated emails, texts, and left messages. However, my correspondence was rarely returned, even though I paid the agreed retainer on time, in full, and was completed early. I received a return call after weeks of waiting. The call I received was from an attorney that wasn't involved in the case. The attorney apologized on behalf of the representing attorney for not receiving the "Aggressive" representation that I paid for. It has been 120 days since the "Sentencing Hearing", and I still have not received the Judge's written details in the order she imposed. The "Sentencing" is 30 Days over, and still no communication from anyone in this firm. Due to not getting the Order In Writing from the Judge, my career has been destroyed, my livelihood taken from me, and no word from anyone at this firm. If you want to get "Hosed" in Court; hire this firm.

M.M. Stigler has represented me several times in the past 15 years. From traffic violations to Numerous Felony charges. My past experience with her was adequate so I felt comfortable to hire her again. I recently retained her service for legal advice on several matters. I paid in advance, and again at additional meeting(s). She waited until the last moment to tell me I had a viable case, but that she didn't do that type of work anymore. I was referred to someone else with only hours left to file my claim(s) and those attorneys weren't interested! Don't waste your money. If you've got legal problems seek out a specialist in the area of law, and the jurisdiction. I have yet to receive a statement of fees or receipt for services rendered despite requesting it.

I was not told I was going to jail or even being sentenced. I broke the law so should be punished but not even a heads up. I was on probation for a similar charge and the judge said you did great on probation and I would recommend probation for you but you don't live here. I had just moved back into the area and had told Mr O'Connor that I was living back in the area. Blatantly lied to the judge. Wasted my time but always had his hands out. I would not use this attorney again or recommend him to anyone. It was an extremely frustrating experience and most times I felt he was not working in my best interest. I feel he wasted my time and my money - after communicating to him that I no longer needed his services, I now have to hire another Attorney to do what he should have done. I would not want anyone else to have that same experience. When you are fighting to defend yourself, you need an unwavering ally - I did not find that in Michael.

I was referred to him by legal access and all I can say is that we wasted precious time and money with him to get custody of my son. He talked a really good game in the consultation but once we paid, it was extremely difficult to get him to communicate. He told me that the recent DV, drug abuse and theft charges my ex had weren't important and were merely hearsay, even with police reports. He obviously did not want to do any legwork. He did not believe in my custody fight and his work (if you can call it that) was subpar. He lied and said we didn't show up for the first pretrial even though we signed in twice. He waited days before I even knew what was said. He said I didn't need to show up to mediation because they weren't planning to. It's a good thing I went against his advice and did show up because they were there. In all, I am highly upset that the money I saved went to him for nothing. Upon retaining a different lawyer, things are moving my way and instead of hearing only what can't be done, I'm hearing what we can do. I have also learned that all lawyers should know the dozen or so things that these cases are judged on. And because this is the first I heard of these, I question if he really even knows what he's doing. Don't waste your money on him! Find someone who cares about you and your case and has years of experience. You and your child are worth more than he seems able to give!

So glad to have the opportunity to report my disappointment even 25 years after my juried trial. It still haunts me. I know if I'd had a good attorney (or possibly any other attorney) I would have won my case. Ed took my case and assured me it was a slam dunk. Nothing to prepare... that all cases like this one before me were found in my favor. I asked him to prepare with all of the other reasons the plaintiffs were wrong in blaming me for their imagined loss and the simple solutions they could take other than going to court. But Ed said it was not necessary. All that was needed was the one simple fact of the case and "Victory was in the bag." The plaintiffs attorney on the other hand was uber prepared... and impressively theatrical. He painted a vivid picture of family misery in the event the case was not found in the plaintiffs favor; even to the extent of bringing up their young children's college funds. Such baloney. My attorney, Ed Keller, on the other hand just sat there like a lump. There was so much he could have said in my defense, not to mention that yes! every case in history had gone my way. But not this time. I was (and still am) known as the turning case in this matter. Before I knew it and with hardly a word from my side of the bench, the judge found in favor of the plaintiff and it was over. Ed said sorry, charged me his fee on top of the money the plaintiffs took and that was that. I am a reasonable person. If I was in the wrong I would admit it. But this was just a case of a really bad attorney going up against a really good one.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
